Solutions journalism is an approach to journalism that focuses on responses to the most complex problems we face today: poverty, climate change, the impacts of systemic racism, and beyond. While journalism traditionally shines light on these problems, solutions stories explore whether responses to these problems are successful.
This innovative journalism approach goes beyond simple issue identification and instead focuses on featuring what is already working. It uses the same rigor of investigative reporting to highlight the mechanisms and success factors as well as the limitations of already-existing solutions to well-known problems. As a result it activates citizens by functioning as a catalyst for accountability that can lead to meaningful change. A problem that was seen as unavoidable comes to be seen as unacceptable.
By the end of this course, students will be able to: • Discriminate between Solutions journalism, • Advocacy and soft news; • Value how Solutions journalism can engage audiences; • See themselves as contributing to the debate about the role of journalism and the journalist in a democratic society. • They will also create solutions journalism through appropriate sources, narrative styles and interview techniques..
