Inspired by the phrase “new frontiers” draft a headline to incorporate into the poster. Each poster set must in some way emphasize your chosen headline and a piece of furniture or lighting. The diptych should demonstrate a firm grasp of hierarchy by simultaneously yielding interesting composition and providing a framework for copy. Determine how to flow your information from one poster to the next in an understandable and graphically enticing way. The diptych should consist of two 18 x 24 inch posters. These posters can work in congress with one another, meaning imagery and text can overlap from one poster onto the other. Or, consider how content can be segmented, thusly creating two separate posters that work together or separately to showcase trade show information. The posters can be full color, and the edge of the page should be engaged unless a border is specifically designed. l i m i tati ons • s i z e : Two 18 x 24 inch posters. • c o l o r : Full color or limited palette based on chosen aesthetic • l e v e l o f c r a f t : Exemplary trimming and digital focus • t y p e fa c e s : DIN, Helvetica, Univers, Bodoni, Garamond, Caslon, Avenir, Serifa, Minion, Gotham, Clarendon—Pairing font families is allowed. Self Edit. • i m a g e r y : Be prepared to try different methods of image manipulation, bitmapping, illustration, collage, or pattern in order to achieve desired image size or effect. This will force you to be creative. Please try to find the highest resolution images possible. Mine the internet, but do not overlook scanning a book or magazine image. • c o p y l e n g t h : You must use all of the copy in some way. T i m el i n e • d u e f e b r ua r y 18 : Familiarize yourself with the ICFF in New York. Research some of the many exhibitors and exhibit spaces. Review the look and feel of the current identity that was designed by 2x4 in New York. This is a modern design event! Ultimately, pull three inspirational uses of type from your research findings and place them on your Dropmark account for class discussion. Also, find five examples of furniture or lighting design that you think might be good candidates for use in a poster. Mine the internet or any books or actual furniture or lighting stores in town to find high resolution images of interesting furniture or lighting that you can use as the image centerpiece for your poster. Keep hold of the furniture designer’s name, so you can use it later. Upload these examples onto your Dropmark account. • d u e f e b r ua r y 25 : Concept and create 30 diptych thumbnails. Bring these to class for personal critique. We will narrow your ideas to three. Bring sketching materials class to continue working.

• d u e m a r c h 4 : Spend time refining your three narrowed-focus concepts by hand. After sketching, take these refinements into a digital format within Adobe Illustrator or InDesign. Get a sense of how the proportions will look and feel to scale. Please consider these digital sketches. Upload to Dropmark your scanned thumbnails, quick pencil refinements, and PDFs of your initial digital poster pairings. • d u e m a r c h 18 : Over the next two weeks you should refine your design based on critique from the previous class. Solidify a refined draft of the diptych. • d u e m a r c h 25 : Refine your draft based on instructor and class feedback. Be prepared to start work on Assignment 4. • due
