Ji Li has worked at some of the best companies in the business: Tsang Seymour, Saatchi & Saatchi, Droga5, Google, and Facebook. Inspired by a class assignment from 20 years ago, he crafted a book called Word As Image where he sought to “see letters beyond their practical functionality.”

You will each be given a folder with a type specimen of Avenir, a small stack of tracing paper, a grid for thumbnails, and a Sharpie. I will announce a single word, and during a timed interval, you will illustrate “the meaning of [each] word, using only the graphic elements of the letters forming the word, without adding any outside parts.” So, using a type specimen as a tracing guide, you will recreate the word and augment parts or the whole to illustrate meaning.
