The Cake & Decadent Desserts

So, you have picked your venue, your wedding gown has been ordered, colors and bridesmaids dresses selected – now for one of the final details, The CAKE! When you make your design and tasting appointment, be prepared to answer some key questions. Your cake designer has reserved this time for you and it is respectful to be prepared and have an idea of what you like and your budget. Cake designers can create gorgeous cakes in every budget. Keep in mind, the best and most talented cake designers book up quickly as they can only create and deliver a certain number of cakes per weekend. Beach To Bay Bridal recommends that you book your tasting appointments 4-6 months prior to your wedding date. When setting up your appointment, be sure to tell the designer of any likes, dislikes or food allergies. Typically you, your fiancé and the mother of the bride or groom attend the tasting appointment. At your appointment, bring: • Any pictures of cakes you like • Color swatches • Approximate number of guests • Venue location • Your checkbook or credit card, as you will need to place a deposit to book the date with the cake designer. Final payment is generally due two weeks before the wedding. 12 Beach to Bay Bridal

By Brittney D. Herz Every wedding reception is filled with commotion. The toasts, the bouquet toss, your great aunt that you haven’t seen in years wanting endless hugs, the constant ringing in the air of people hitting their glasses to see the happy bride and groom kiss. Brides barely get a chance to sit, let alone a chance to actually eat their dinners! You spent the time picking out the caterer and the food menu, make sure to take time and actually enjoy your meal. One way to do this is to have your dinner before the reception. After the ceremony is usually the time for photos and travel to the reception area (if in a different location). Plan a little extra time during this in between for eating.

K

Brides: Eat Your Dinner!

Ask the caterers to put aside a plate for you and your groom so after the ceremony you can have a small meal before having to go and greet your guests. Or if you are too excited to get and see all your friends and family, or

16 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B revised.indd 16

12/11/13 6:44 PM

too crammed for time, have the caterers keep some plates for after the reception. Many brides make a point to have their table served first or to be allowed to the buffet first. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get to eat first however. Many people will want to come and say hi while it looks like you are

B2B revised.indd 17

free of others. It is not rude to tell a certain guest, “I’m so glad you could make it, let me finish up this plate and I’ll be over to catch up.” Also when preparing the schedule for the reception you may just want to allow more time for eating and maybe skip on some of the other traditions you don’t particular care to do.

Trash the Dress By Brittney D. Herz Photos by Joni Simpson, Photographic Impressions It seems a shame that as a new bride you spend countless hours researching the kind of dress you want, going to all the different bridal stores to try them on, or looking online through hundreds of galleries before you decide on the perfect dress for you only to end up wearing it for one day. Most brides after their ceremony hang their dress in their closet where it sits for years and either ends up at Good Will, a yard sale, Craigslist, or with a cousin that thinks it will work as a prom dress. Some brides are now opting for “Trash the Dress photo shoots after their wedding. Trash the Dress is also referred to as Rock the Frock. The idea is to take something beautiful and elegant, like a bride in her wedding dress, and place

them into an environment that is contradictory like the streets or an ocean. More times than not the dress is ruined after these photo shoots. One of the more popular of these photo ideas is placing the bride in water. This can mean just walking or sitting on the shoreline, getting in up to your waist, or going completely underwater if your photographer has the right equipment. Water shoots allow for plenty of opportunities for you to pose with or without your groom.

22 Beach to Bay Bridal

12/11/13 6:59 PM

Trash the suit too! You can both get your feet wet as the waves crash on the sand or as you sit on the edge of a lake for some beautiful pictures. More adventurous? Dive in. If there’s something to jump off of, then jump. If not, just play in the waves like you would if you were in your swimsuit. It must be noted that being in the ocean with a heavy dress on can be dangerous so please be cautious. If you’re not near water or would rather stay above the surface there are other

options for a trash the dress photo shoot. Nature provides a plethora of things to ruin your dress and make for a great picture. Grass and mud are two good examples. Get dirty! Climb on rocks, lie on the ground, rest against trees, just pretend you’re in old jeans and t-shirt. Get on some four wheelers and go mudding, you in your wedding dress and him in his tuxedo or suit. There are plenty of other landmarks or areas to roll around on that will give you a great picture. A farm could be great place for outside

24 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B revised.indd 25

photos. They have everything from barns, to fences, to hay, to horses, to just open fields of grass or crops. All of which could potentially ruin your dress (but that’s kind of the point here!). If you’re not so much into nature and want a more urban like photo shoot look to your nearby city. Downtown areas can provide gorgeous backdrops of brick buildings, graffiti, bus stops, and benches. Rail road tracks are always a good go to for photos. Even just an empty road itself to lie in or walk down can provide a good scene. Look around for abandoned houses or old rundown buildings as a location There really are dozens of ways to pull off a trash the dress photo shoot and it really is an individual process. Are you into art? Cover yourself and your dress in paint. Are you a horror movie fanatic? Throw on some fake blood. Are you sporty or athletic? Go for a bike ride

in your dress. Are you a chef or just a food fanatic? Have a food fight using very colorful foods. A fan of Halloween or autumn? Carve pumpkins wearing your dress or paint each other’s faces. Love winter and Christmas? Make a snow angel in your dress. There is always the idea of having some sort of competition with your groom that will result is some dress damage. Paintball So when do you trash the dress? Well that’s really a personal call as well. Some brides opt to do it right after the wedding and change into a more comfortable, and not trashed, dress for the reception. If you like this idea you must realize the dress isn’t the only thing that may be getting trashed. If you’re in the ocean, or mud, or in the woods, your makeup and hair may also get messed up so keep that in mind. Some just do the photo shoot the next day or within a few days after the wedding. With this option remember if you want your

hair and makeup done all over again you would be paying for this service back to back. Some wait until a certain mark is reached before doing the photo shoot. For example at their first wedding anniversary or their fifth or when they are expecting their first child may all be as good a time as any to celebrate by completely trashing your wedding dress.

Something Blue

By Brittney D. Herz

Everyone knows the old adage, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” Something old is supposed to represent or link the bride to her past. Usually this means a trinket of some kind from a family member like her mother, grandmother, aunt or just someone close. It can be anything from a piece of jewelry to a locket with a family member’s photo to a family rosary. Something new is supposed to give luck to the bride in the future. Some ideas for something new could be a key to your new home, something with the year of your wedding on it, or just something you bought for yourself for your big day. Something borrowed is to symbolize borrowed happiness and is usually something given from another married woman to the bride (ideally a happily married

woman to pass on her good fortune!). But something blue can be more versatile and has a little more of history behind it… During the Civil War in the United States it was custom for brides to wear a blue garter to represent their virginity. Blue is also believed to represent wisdom, stability, and loyalty and is thought to be calming, which any bride could appreciate on their wedding day. So how do you incorporate the color blue? There are some simpler options, such as a blue garter or blue undergarments, that won’t draw attention away from your other colors. However if you want to be a little bolder with your blue there are other ways to carry the traditionShoes- Usually a bride’s shoes aren’t easily seen but if you

28 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B revised.indd 28

12/11/13 7:26 PM

want to rock some blue pumps make sure and show them off. You could even have white shoes and have your guest or wedding party sign them in blue ink. Nails- Blue nail polish is becoming a popular way to wear the color. If you don’t want to go as bold as to have your nails completely blue maybe do just blue tips or a blue design on your ring finger. Hair piece- You could do anything from a blue headband, a blue flower, a blue bow, or a jeweled wrap that just has accents of blue. Blue Pen- This isn’t necessarily a wedding dress accessory but hiding a blue pen somewhere to sign your wedding certificate is another unique way to incorporate the color. Tattoo- That’s right, some brides are even going so adventurous as to get blue tattoo before their wedding. Obviously this isn’t going to be for everyone but a small blue heart or something the represents you as a couple is as committed to the adage as you can get!

Planning your Wedding Day Look If you are hiring a professional photographer and want your pictures to be the best ever, you must plan your hair and makeup too! Your everyday makeup and foundation may not be suited to an outdoor wedding in the summer. Makeup Artists factor in your skin type and will want to plan your look with you in advance. A few weeks before your wedding, schedule a practice

session with your makeup artist and hair stylist. Bring your veil and ask your brides maids to come along too! Keep in mind, sometimes the color of a lipstick may make teeth look yellow, no matter your age. Your makeup artist will be candid with you. If you plan to have a facial done, don't do it 24 hours prior to your wedding as extractions can leave red marks.

Kids or No Kids? By Brittney D. Herz

One of the first things you should decide when planning your wedding is whether or not you are going to include children on your guest list. For some people it’s a no brainer- “I have a huge a family with a lot of kids of course they’re invited” or “I have a huge family with a lot of kids there’s no way they’re invited”. If this question is plaguing you remember to keep some things in mind. It is your wedding. This is to say that you can’t make this decision based on what you think everyone else wants. Is it appropriate to say “no children allowed”? Of course, if that’s what you want. One way to clearly state your intentions is through the invitations themselves. If you want children then include their names on the invitation. After the invitations are sent call your guests that have children and be clear with them on your rule.

*

Either way, this is something that needs to be addressed early on. If you aren’t allowing children at your wedding than more than a few guests will probably need to line up sitters. The sooner they know whether they need to do that the better. If you are having a more formal wedding with a night time reception then more than likely it would be better to leave the kids at home. However, if you are having a day time or more casual wedding it may be a little more difficult to convince people to not bring their children. You can also allow for certain children but not all children. This is a trickier situation to be in so the best way to do that is to have an age limit. Older children are general more well behaved in formal settings so if you have some family members that you think would be okay then

40 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B revised.indd 40

12/11/13 8:10 PM

just say, “no children under 8” or whatever age you want as a cutoff. You will have friends and family that think they are the exception to the rule. Be prepared to have to stand your ground. Also, it is not a good idea to invite the children to the ceremony but not the reception. One con to not allowing children at your wedding is you must be prepared for some people to not come to the wedding at all. This may be because they can’t find or afford a sitter or because they just don’t want to go somewhere their children are not allowed. Having kids at your wedding can be beneficial though especially with a strong family orientated union. Children work really well as ring bearers and flower girls. Again if they are at the ceremony it’s better to invite them to the reception as well. They also can work during the reception and are often times excited to have something to do. They can hand out programs, give out fans, act as ushers,

B2B revised.indd 41

or even direct people to their tables. This is depending on the child, as we all know, each one is different. If you can afford it and if room allows it seems a general consensus to have a separate table and room for those kids under 7 or 8 when it is time to eat and give toasts. You would have to have someone act as childcare, ideally a hired professional not some relative that is going to miss out on the adult stuff. For kids over that age you can simply have a “kids” table to sit them all together. You may also want to think about take home gifts that are kid oriented or things that they could do during the reception. If you can’t afford someone to watch over the kids’ table however it may be better to just sit the younger kids with their parents. There will probably be complaining because they will want to play with the other children but after dinner everyone will be mixing and they can go sit next to their friends and family. Local Spots for the perfect Honeymoon

B2B revised.indd 47

Whether it’s because of work, kids, money, or you just plain love the shore and don’t want to leave, here are some local spots for the perfect honeymoon. Bed and Breakfasts are always a good choice for newlyweds. They’re quiet, cozy, and much more intimate than most hotels. That being said how do you pick a good one that’s local? One local option is The River House Inn. They describe themselves as a “spacious National Register Victorian home on the beautiful Pocomoke River.” The home truly is beautiful inside and out and offers many things to do in the area. If you’re more outdoorsy you’re close enough to waterways to go boating or fishing, or even just take a bike ride. If you’re more interested in shopping and dining your only minutes away from downtown Snow Hill. Their breakfasts

are all fresh and included every morning. They are highly rated and members of several associations. Also, they have special rates for off season. Unlike many B&Bs the River House Inn does offer a large in ground pool for their guests as well. Another local option would be the Alexander House Book Lovers B & B. It “is a literary-themed inn located in the quaint historic district of Princess Anne”. This is a Victorian home with rooms that have been designed to represent several authors including Langston Hughes, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Mark Twain. They offer breakfast, afternoon tea, or late night liqueur. Some nearby attractions are Crisfield, MD which offers ferries to Tangier and Smith Island or you could just walk into Historic Downtown Princess Anne. Want to be near Ocean Beach to Bay Bridal

City without actually staying in Ocean City? Waystead Inn is a Bed and Breakfast located in Berlin, Md. The history of the house is somewhat of a mystery thanks to a fire at the County Seat at Snow Hill in 1911. However, Waystead is a large Victorian home only a short drive to the Assateague or Ocean City beaches. Those who are on the more adventurous side can take advantage of local claims of the B&B’s haunted corridors. Bed and Breakfasts not your thing? Maybe staying right in the center of the action would be more suited to your kind of honeymoon. There are plenty of options for hotels and motels throughout Ocean City, MD where there is always something to do. The Clarion Resort offers very luxurious rooms right on the beach. With a view and private walk way down to the Atlantic Ocean, it is in an ideal location to all the happenings in Ocean

City. Nearby are the Ocean City Convention Center, Jolly Rogers Amusement Parks, Seacrets Nightclub, and a short ride away from the Boardwalk and rides. The rooms themselves all have free WiFi, flat screens with HBO, and room service available. The Coconut Malorie Resort is another luxurious hotel option if you are looking to stay in Ocean City. They also offer free WiFi and HBO to all their guests. Many of their rooms are even equipped with their own kitchen. Not into cooking on your honeymoon? No worries, the Coconut Malorie is right next to Fager’s Island Restaurant. If you are wanting to go a little more north there is always the upscale option of The Bellmoor Inn & Spa in Rehoboth Beach, DE. They are located near the beaches, museums, shopping, and other entertainment. They serve a hot fresh breakfast every morning, have two swimming pools, and a full service spa.

Getting your Marriage License Maryland: A blood test is not necessary and same sex partners are free to marry as well. Application rules and fees are pretty standard in each county in Maryland as listed below. Be sure to contact the county you plan to get married in ahead of time and if you are not a resident of that county, there is a non-resident affidavit (plus $35 fee) that you will probably need to complete in your county of residence and bring with you. Also, if you plan to marry on a beach or at a state or national park, there could be other fees. Be sure to ask the County Clerk. Barn Weddings By Brittney D. Herz

If you are looking for a more personal and unique wedding experience then you may want to ditch the churches and the event halls and instead look out in the country. Barns are becoming popular venues for couples who want a more rustic or country themed wedding. Seating- With any outside venue you need to make sure you have comfortable seating that won’t get ruined in the elements. Also be aware of the layout so that everyone in attendance can get a good view of you and your groom on the altar. Dress- This will coincide with what time of the year you decide to get married. It seems that a more casual attire works best with barn weddings. You will be walking and dancing outside so make sure to keep that in mind, especially when shoe shopping.

Photo by Andrew Nock DecorationsIf you are having a barn wedding you may want to stick to rustic or country themed decorations. Use things like mason jars, twine, flowers, burlap, and buntings. For lighting, inquire about the electric availability where the barn is and in the surrounding area. If there is none then plan accordingly with what time you will have the wedding and reception. Candles always look great in any venue but be aware you are in a wooden barn!
