The Cake & Decadent Desserts

So, you have picked your venue, your wedding gown has been ordered, colors and bridesmaids dresses selected – now for one of the final details, The CAKE! When you make your design and tasting appointment, be prepared to answer some key questions. Your cake designer has reserved this time for you and it is respectful to be prepared and have an idea of what you like and your budget. Cake designers can create gorgeous cakes in every budget. Keep in mind, the best and most talented cake designers book up quickly as they can only create and deliver a certain number of cakes per weekend. Beach To Bay Bridal recommends that you book your tasting appointments 4-6 months prior to your wedding date.

When setting up your appointment, be sure to tell the designer of any likes, dislikes or food allergies. Typically you, your fiancĂŠ and the mother of the bride or groom attend the tasting appointment.

12 Beach to Bay Bridal

7/22/14 4:07 PM

At your appointment, bring: • Any pictures of cakes you like • Color swatches • Approximate number of guests • Venue location • Your checkbook or credit card, as you will need to place a deposit to book the date with the cake designer. Final payment is generally due two weeks before the wedding.

By Brittney D. Herz There are many nonprofits here on the Eastern Shore but Icing Smiles (based out of Ellicott City) is one that takes a whole new angle on making sick children and their families smile. Icing Smiles provides “custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child.” As they state on their website, something as simple as a beautiful cake can really take a family’s mind off of impending illness and all the hardships that come along with caring for a sick child. Celebrating birthdays and having money for things like a cake are a luxury a lot of these families just can’t afford. Icing Smiles makes sure these sick children and their families get

K

to celebrate and “provide a temporary escape from worry.” Volunteers for Icing Smiles are known as “Sugar Angels.” Our very own Susan Patt from Cake Art in downtown Salisbury became a “Sugar Angel” for a deserving family here on Delmarva. She was making a cake for Katie Jo’s birthday

14 Beach to Bay Bridal

which was in November of 2013. Katie Jo had lost a brother, Danny, the year before. Danny had needed 24-hour care and had to undergo many different and difficult surgeries. He was critically ill and considered a miracle baby until he passed during a complicated surgery in August 2012. “The family has been through so much and I felt honored to be able to do something special for Katie Jo and her family,” Susan commented. “It was such a small thing in comparison but I know they appreciated it and know there are so many other families going through similar things. I believe we all need to give back in any way we can.” It doesn’t take a million dollars to be a hero to someone in need. A huge hug goes out to Susan Patt and her staff at Cake Art – demonstrating that you really can make a difference

B2B summer_fall14.indd 15

and help others even if you don’t have a lot of money to offer. Susan was able to use her baking and decorating skills to make a difference in a young girl’s life. “I was so happy to find an organization that could use my gifts and talents to serve families that may otherwise not be able to celebrate their children’s birthdays.” If you know of a deserving family or would like to contribute to Icing Smiles in some way, please visit their website at icingsmiles.org.

Is a Sunrise Wedding a good idea? What is the best time of day to have a Beach Wedding? Each year brides from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio ask this same question. A lot depends on the time of year, but the two most popular answers are sunrise and sunset. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This means on the eastern shore, the only opportunity to see the sun actually submerged in the sea is during sunrise. Ocean City & Bethany Beach sunrises are particularly majestic and are among the cleanest beaches on the mid Atlantic! At dawn the beach is usually empty so you and your wedding guests will have the sand all to yourselves during the ceremony. Even during the

@

busy summer season, an old man with a metal detector, an early morning jogger or birdwatcher are all you're likely to encounter. It's just you and the ocean and the birds basking in the rays of a brand new day. It is the most tranquil time of day. You can distinctly hear the waves lapping onto the shoreline and the sea birds prancing along the shoreline. Occasionally you'll even see baby foxes at play in the dunes. Sunrise weddings offer the coolest temperatures during the hot summer months. The cool sands are a delightful treat for barefoot brides. The lighting is soft in the early morning. This translates into gentler photos and wedding videos. Usually dark colored

24 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B summer_fall14.indd 24

7/22/14 4:25 PM

@ suits for the groomsmen are a "no-no" on the beach, but in the early hours you can get away with it. One of the best perks of a sunrise beach wedding is that you'll have the entire day to celebrate! Ocean City has an abundance of restaurants that serve early breakfast. If you're feeling adventurous, you may even opt for a champagne brunch at your hotel or the Bayside Skillet. If you're paying for the wedding reception, a morning

B2B summer_fall14.indd 25

ceremony is a great way to cut costs. Treating your guests to breakfast instead of dinner should cut your bill in half. Most guests tend to drink significantly less in the morning than the evening, so it's a opportunity to spring for an "open bar" at a fraction of the costs. The final reason to consider a sunrise wedding on the Beach: The mid afternoon Wedding Day Nap. This should be the best nap of your life, so don't let that opportunity pass you by! No matter what time you decide to have your beach ceremony, make sure it is on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware or Virginia! Article contributed by local planner Cassandra Rox. She is available to answer your questions. Sunset times vary throughout the season. Beach to Bay Bridal 25

Years ago, the Bride-to-Be combed through magazines and bridal etiquette guides to help her and define budget expectations. Your Mother and Grandmothers most likely used Emily Post’s Books on Etiquette. Emily Post clearly explained the dos and don’ts and traditional who pays for what when it comes to wedding expenses and how to handle pretty much every other life scenario with regards to etiquette and good manners. Fast forward to this generation with the internet and TV shows like My Fair Wedding, Say Yes To The Dress and Four Weddings. Brides have dreams and fantasies that actually may be outside their budget. Being upfront with your dreams and communicating expectations

to your attendants will make for a very happy and stressfree wedding plan. Trust me, the last thing you want to turn into is a Bridezilla – with your bridesmaids wishing that they had declined the invitation to be your attendant. Here are a few thoughts to consider when it comes to planning the hair and makeup. If you want your

28 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B summer_fall14.indd 28

7/22/14 4:29 PM

bridesmaids to have a certain hairstyle or professional make-up, according to proper etiquette (Emily Post), the bride/parents of the bride are obligated to pay for this. According to Emilypost. com, “You want it, you pay for it. If the bride doesn’t care what hairstyle her maids wear, then the financial responsibility falls

B2B summer_fall14.indd 29

to the bridesmaid if she so chooses to use professional hairdressing the day of the wedding. This being said, once you have set your budget with your parents or yourself, if you forgot to include this cost, be sure to revisit your budget with your parents if you are expecting them to help you cover some of your wedding costs. You may want to offer the option of professional makeup and updo, but be cognizant of your bridesmaid budgets. Your bridesmaids may have the expense of traveling, hotel, meals to get to your wedding venue and bridal shower. Not to mention, the dress, shoes, accessories, bridal shower, bachelorette party, bridesmaids gift to the bride, gift to bride & groom.

Return of Romance/Class By Brittney D. Herz Pearls, crystals, bold colors of black, red, and white can all be seen at a classy yet romantic wedding. With a large rise in rustic weddings in the past few years, the “roaring twenties and romantic inspired weddings have seemed to drop. But for 2014 (probably thanks a little to The Great Gatsby!), romantic weddings are on the rise and it is being projected as one of the top trends for 2014. Here are some easy, fun, and elegant ways to incorporate the romance back into your wedding. All that glitters- Bring on the bling to create a classy feel to your wedding. Use crystals to drape the lighting fixtures, your candles, the centerpieces, the head table, and your guests (warning: guests may not like

* Photo by Joni Simpson Photographic Impressions

to be draped in crystals). If you want to use larger, pendant like crystals, just be sure to space them out as to not appear gaudy. Definitely play up the lighting of the room if using crystals. Hang thin strands under the lights or place them around any candles you may be using

32 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B summer_fall14.indd 32

7/22/14 4:32 PM

ic

to really make them shine. Pearls- Same thing applies to pearls as they do to crystals. Pearls are arguably the most romantic accessory a wedding ceremony can have. Using various sized strands, you can drape your centerpieces, lighting, tables, and bouquets with pearls. One way to create a romantic but still rustic look is to take a tree center piece (or make one) and drape pearls over all of the branches, maybe even attach some small flowers. Call some local bakeries about having “pearls” on your cake as well! Gold-- It is pretty standard to see your average silverware at a wedding. A new trend that really enhances the romantic theme is using gold silverware. Go even further with gold plates, gold napkins, and gold rimmed drinking glasses. Make sure to incorporate another color or

B2B summer_fall14.indd 33

two into the table decoration as to not become overwhelmingly gold! Sequins- Kind of going along with the crystals and pearls, sequins can add an elegant touch to your reception space. You can even have a glimmering wedding cake! A new trend is to actually have “glitter” on your wedding cake. Bakeries can offer sparkling sprinkle details that make your cake shimmer with the rest of your reception area. If you don’t want Beach to Bay Bridal 33

7/22/14 4:33 PM

the whole cake to sparkle, maybe settle for a sequined cake topper. Sequined table covers are becoming popular as well. They can really set off a glamorous tone to your reception. Just be careful to not go overboard with all the glitz! If you have a sequined table cover, maybe go easy on the crystal centerpieces.

Black Tie-- With a rise in casual/shabby chic weddings there was also a rise in more casual guest clothing. Specify on your invitations that it is indeed “a black tie affair” to make sure you get the feel that you want. Some brides are a little weary to hold a black tie wedding if their reception isn’t in a grand ballroom. Well,

34 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B summer_fall14.indd 34

7/22/14 4:34 PM

don’t be, you can have a black tie reception anywhere you choose! The Bride- Black tie is done, now for the bride. You have a lot of choices when it comes to your dress, anything from Old Hollywood glamour to a shorter fun Flapper style. If you are making the guests and men dress in black tie, you should probably stick to a longer and more formal gown. To bring in Flapper appeal, you could opt to put your bridesmaids in

B2B summer_fall14.indd 35

flapper styled dresses. Don’t neglect the hair! The Roaring Twenties became known for the side wave and elegant headwear for women. A nice side bun with waved bangs and pearl head band could be the perfect fit. Roses- No flower captures the essence of romance quite like a rose. Naturally they are already the perfect colors for romance. Create your bouquet with red and white roses and incorporate them into your centerpieces.

Chincoteague Weddings By Brittney Herz and Evelyn Shotwell One dream wedding that a lot of women have is to be married at the beach. The sand, the ocean, the sun, it’s a just a beautiful natural setting that you can’t really put a price on. Beach weddings also give you the option of having a more casual affair if you so desire and tend to be a little bit less expensive than your traditional wedding and reception. You also have the option of having the ceremony and reception right there on the beach! No need to travel to a separate location. We are fortunate to live in an area where you have a variety of beach options to choose from. One of those options is to have your wedding on Chincoteague or Assateague Island. For the venue there are

*

plenty of outdoor options to choose from. Assateague Island National Seashore offers a romantic beach wedding. Contact the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge for permits and information to make your day special. Chincoteague Island locations include Veteran’s Memorial Park and Robert Reed Waterfront Park. Contact the Chincoteague Town Office to reserve the pavilion at either park. Of course with any beach wedding you must be aware that the weather can be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you like the idea of being close to the beach but are a little nervous about having the whole celebration outdoors you can also contact The Chincoteague Center

38 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B summer_fall14.indd 38

7/22/14 4:37 PM

which is a large indoor facility that can hold up to 800 people! The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce (www. chincoteaguechamber.com) offers a check list of everything you may need for the big day. First a marriage license, which you can get at the County Clerk’s Office for Accomack County. The Clerk’s Office can also direct you to a Licensed Marriage Celebrant if you don’t have one in mind. This could be a licensed minister or a boat

B2B summer_fall14.indd 39

captain if you are planning on exchanging vows on the water. Chincoteague has plenty of businesses to use for the big day as well. See our ads and the Chamber of Commerce website for a list of local businesses that can help with catering, photography, floral, and more. I asked Evelyn Shotwell, the Executive Director at the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce why people should consider Chincoteague Island as their ideal wedding location. Beach to Bay Bridal 39

7/22/14 4:38 PM

“The fact that Assateague Beach was voted #1 in 2010 by Aol.com, #7 in 2013 by Trip Advisor, #2 in 2014 by Trip Advisor, and one of the Top Ten Happiest Seaside Towns in America by Coastal Living Magazine in 2014 sort of sums up why a destination wedding to Chincoteague would be unique.” It’s easy

to see why this could be the ideal place for your wedding. “Getting married on a National Wildlife Refuge is peaceful, relaxed, and a perfect way to begin a future together,” Shotwell added. So if the sand and surf are something that are a must have for your wedding, look no further than our own Virginia coast at Chincoteague Island.

A Rose by Any Other Name By Brittney D. Herz Flowers are arguably one of the most important staples at your wedding. Some brides are choosing to go sans flowers due to the cost and upkeep, but the visual appeal of flowers is something that just can’t be replaced. But what kind should you get? Every flower represents something different. For example, a prime staple flower for romance is the rose. Red roses can be seen in art from previous decades to show love and romance. In ancient Greece red roses were closely linked to the Goddess of Love. Today, they are still the number one seller on Valentine’s Day to show someone you love them. Of course roses come in many other colors which all have their own unique meaning. Yellow roses represent friendship and joy; something

@

that could definitely make an appearance at your wedding! White roses can be for sympathy or to show gratitude and also have a spiritual representation to them. If you are having a religious ceremony you may want to incorporate some white roses. If you want to go off the beaten path of roses, you could opt for orange. These represent desire

and passion, which we would hope you have both in your new marriage. If you want to go a little more rustic with your wedding and have some simple flowers, you may want to choose daisies. Daisies represent innocence (which may or may not apply) but they also represent a loyal love and patience. Daisies tend to be a cheaper option as well and if using white ones they can be incorporated into

flower arrangements that have other colors. Tulips also can represent true love and come in array of colors to fit your theme. Tulips are the official flower for spring but can be used in a summer or fall wedding as well. They even have a history of being given as a gift to a bride on her wedding day. If you want to use lilies in your wedding, stay away from orange lilies which are said to represent hatred.

For 2014 the trend with floral arrangements shows there will be a mix of flowers with raw materials and greenery. In the bouquet you may want to add some burlap flowers, jeweled pieces, or use twine around the stems. It seems the color palettes range all over and there are even many arrangements that have completely contrasting colors. I think it’s safe to say almost anything goes with your flowers this year! Now should you choose real or silk flowers for your wedding day? Well, there are a few things to consider. Where are you having your wedding? If you are having an outside wedding and there is a chance of too cold or too hot weather conditions, you may want to opt for silk flowers. They won’t wilt in the different temperature changes. They also have a tendency to be lighter making your bouquet easier to manage and easier to transport. If you

B2B summer_fall14.indd 47

are the type of bride that likes to keep mementoes, you may want to get silk flowers so that you can keep your bouquet throughout your marriage. However, one downside is when buying real flowers you can sometimes get good deals by buying flowers that are out of season. With silk, all flowers are always in season so there is no cash break there. There is also the ambience of real flowers. Many argue you just can’t beat the real thing. Beach to Bay Bridal 47

Pros and Cons of Using Instagram on Your Wedding Day By Brittney D. Herz Instagram isn’t just for photos of your dinner or some crazy cat sitting on your windshield. It’s also a great source for you to get wedding photos from your guests. However, you may want to be aware of the pros and cons of having your guests become a part of capturing your wedding day. One pro is getting a wide variety of different photos that your photographer won’t be able to catch. Your photographer can’t be everywhere; even if they have an assistant they’re going to miss some things. If your guests are capturing their own good time then you will be able to see the proofs. You will also get plenty of candids this way, not just posed photos.

*

In order for it to be successful you have to let your guests know ahead of time you are choosing to use Instagram. It won’t help if only one or two of your guests are using Instagram. Giving your guests notice will allow those attending that have smart phones to start looking into an Instagram account if they don’t already have one. If you are making a wedding website or a Facebook page make sure to promote the fact that you are using Instagram. For the day of, make some pretty signs that have your unique hashtag so you don’t miss a photo! Another pro are the amazing filters that Instagram offers. We are going to assume your photographer is a Photoshop whiz and will take care of

54 Beach to Bay Bridal

B2B summer_fall14.indd 54

7/22/14 5:48 PM

the imperfections you don’t particularly care for. However, if they miss them you can edit your own Instagram photos using filters to help you look your best. One con that you may not think of is that if guests are worried about capturing your wedding, they may actually miss out on some of the party! You don’t want your guests glued to their phones during the whole ceremony and reception. You also may be alienating some of your guests that aren’t on Instagram or don’t have a smart phone. Grandma might want to help capture photos too! An old school “Instagram alternative” would be to have disposable cameras on all of the tables and ask guests to capture photos for you. Another con comes when you’re actually ready to print. Instagram photos are generally very low pixels. This means if you fall in love with a photo

B2B summer_fall14.indd 55

that one of your guests has taken, you may not be able to get a larger print copy without the photo becoming blurry or distorted. You also must be aware that Instagram is public. Even with your special hashtag others are going to see these photos. If you have privacy concerns, this may not be the best route. The decision is up to you! Instagram is definitely a wedding trend that is gaining popularity over the past few years but is not a mandatory addition that you must have. Beach to Bay Bridal 55

A Reception to Keep Em Talking By Brittney D. Herz I’m sure you’ve been to at least one wedding that about an hour into the reception you start seeing people try to casually hide their yawns. That doesn’t have to be yours! Here are some ways to keep your wedding fun and exciting the whole night through. Before the fun can even start guests have to make their way to their seats. Make sure you spend time and thought on your seating chart. You don’t have to sit guests only with people they know; however, make sure you sit them with people they will actually get along with. It’s almost smarter to kind of intermingle the families to keep conversations going. There are plenty of ideas online to help you with conversation starters that you can place on the table if you have a more introverted group.

@

Although the best man may be hysterical and the maid of honor may have some sweet sentiments to spill out, it’s best to keep the toasts short. After hearing toast after toast guests start to get ants in their pants. Have a clear time limit for whomever you are asking to do toasts. If they do have longer stories they feel need to be said have them do it at the rehearsal dinner.

If you are having children at your wedding give them something to do. Most kids love to be out on the dance floor once the party starts, but getting to that point can be a little brutal for them. Have coloring papers and crayons, or even small toys, at a kids table for them to play with so they don’t get bored waiting for the fun to start.

The music is arguably one of the most crucial elements to making a reception go all night and keep the guests entertained. You want to make sure there are enough danceable songs that get played. Even if current upbeat music isn’t your scene, you still need to play some to keep the guests happy. Certain songs are just destined to get people dancing. Outfit change is one way to let your guests know that the party has officially started. Getting a second dress that is shorter, more comfortable, and just more fun will set the mood. You can also offer your guests a change as well. Have some flip flops out for the women to slip into in case dancing in heels starts to take its toll. If you want to keep your guests partying all night, make sure to feed them all night! Not

saying that you have to have another three course meal served but later in the evening have the caterers offer some low key snacks. You can really personalize this “second meal”. Do you and your groom die for pizza? Bring out some pizzas. Are you more burgers and fries kind of people? You get it. It doesn’t even need to be that large of an option. Just some finger foods like chicken fingers, meatballs, wings, or chips and salsa would be plenty.

The main thing to remember when planning your wedding is make sure you keep yourself in the wedding. That sounds silly because it’s YOUR wedding but sometimes people tend to get caught up in the what we should do mode that they end up making their big day impersonal. Keep true to yourself when planning all of your reception activities.
