RWB Nick Cichielo It seems like it was only a few months ago when I was installed as Master of the Lodge of Research and here we are one year later with just a few months to go. This year’s line had many new challenges. We actually opened our library with a dedication ceremony in September highlighted by an inspiring talk from Clifton Truman Daniels, the Grand Son of MWB Harry Truman. Right after that we went into high gear since now we had a library to manage. We had 10,000 books in the basement that had to be moved into the library. It is not as simple as moving books. Each book had to be inspected, logged into our computer system, and then placed on the shelves by category. We needed to purchase the correct software and then with many hours of volunteer efforts start placing the books on the correct section on the shelves. To date we have recorded over 5,000 books and hope to hit 6,000 by our Grand Lodge Communication. When we finish that we will have another 10,000 books donated to us from the Grand Lodge of Iowa. Masonic books continue to be donated to us from Brothers across the state.

PROUD \

I am proud to be a Mason, as are we all. I am proud of the high standards we espouse, of our long history, of the ways in which we are not like the rest of the world. A particular source of pride is meeting so many of our members who practice Masonry in word and deed and attempt to live daily what we teach and say. Masonry is different.

(From Page 1, Cichielo) We also had to write numerous policies pertaining to finance, contracts and procedures to follow. As you can see there was much to do, but the dedicated line of MLR Officers rolled up their sleeves and got the job done. We are also starting to receive many visitors to our library not only from Missouri, but from across North America. Lodges are also starting to book a visitation to the library. From an empty room just a short time ago it is so gratifying to see your library open and preforming a service. Another Grand Lodge member said to one of our line officers, “Now that Missouri has a Museum and Library, they have become one of the premier locations for Masonic Information in North America”. What a great compliment! I would like to thank all of your loyal support this year. As for me, I will always cherish the fond memories of what we have done together. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm” ! We have the enthusiasm to continue on and get the job done.

• The world is politically divided and antagonistic; Masons are taught to be good citizens and understanding of the opinions of others. • The world seems dominated by factions that are hostile, confrontational and rude; Masons learn to be civil and respectful. • The world is fractured by religious intolerance and bigotry; Masons respect all religions and welcome all believers in God - in whatever form that belief may take. [Excerpted from article by Grand Master Louis K. Campbell in The Virginia Masonic Herald, Spring 2013, Grand Lodge of Virginia]

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved. - Franklin D. Roosevelt If you go as far as you can see, you will then see enough to go even farther. - John Wooden

Fraternally. Nicholas R. Cichielo WM, Missouri Lodge of Research _ _ _ _ _ DEMOCRACY Historians now realize that Masonic Lodges in Europe served as the first models of democracy, models which later spread to governments. Members in Lodges made their own by-laws and elected their own leaders. No place else in society was that true. The very idea of elections, unsupervised by religious or civic authority, was unheard of -except in the Lodge. It is not too much to say that the model of democracy which later was finalized in the United States and now exists in many nations of the world was an invention of the Masonic Lodge! “We Need the Letter ‘E’” Of course without it, the above title to this article would be: “W Nd th Lttr ‘ ‘ ”, which wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense! It has been said that the letter “E” is the most unfortunate letter in the whole English alphabet because it is always out of cash, forever in debt, never out of danger, in hell all the time - - and has never been lucky enough the be in Missouri! I must bring your attention to the fact that “E” is never in war, but is always in peace. It has always been in the beginning of existence and is always at the end of Trouble. Without it there would be no heaven, no life no meat. Without it there would be no news and no editors. It HAS always been at the center of honesty. But most important, without it – we wouldn’t have a Lodge to go to, particularly the (Missouri Lodge of Research!!! (Note: Original article titled The Letter “E” was first seen in The Masonic Quarterly, Winter 1990) -

A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband's temper. The Doctor asks: "What's the problem?" The woman says: "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me." The Doctor says: "I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down." Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: "Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?" The Doctor says: "The water, itself, does nothing. It's keeping your mouth shut that does the trick."
