Name: Molly Davies Age: 23 I currently live in a 4 bedroomed Cottage with my Mum, Dad and my younger Sister Lottie. I am lucky enough to live in a rural area, where I'm surrounded with lots of Nature and Animals! The 5 images used within the previous page all have one thing in common; portraying my happiness. As you progress through the first part of my brand me research, I hope you will be able to get to know me a little better, and will give you an insight into my life‌

I loved my time at Primary school! I was always very happy, confident and just loved waking up and going to school every morning. I took part in after school activities, I was part of the student council and loved being part of the school plays we put on each year. I was often praised for my hard work and determination with regards to my studies. As I had such a positive and happy experience at primary school , I never once felt under confident, anxious or suffered with low mood. Once I left my primary school bubble, and moved on to High School, that’s when I noticed confidence in myself and my work massively dropped. I talk about this further on my ‘Fight or Flight Page’.
FIGURES 11-13
The first 3 images on the previous page are of me by the Sea. I am happiest when I’m by the Sea! I instantly feel relaxed and content and all of my worries leave me. I find being by the Sea; calming, peaceful and tranquil. When I am surrounded by fresh sea air, and I can hear the waves crashing against the rocks, my mind switches off, I am at one with myself and I just feel happy, positive and inspired. My family holidays each year, often consist of us traveling to one of the most famous, British seaside holiday destinations- Cornwall. Me and my family have been visiting Cornwall, since I was really young, and its always been a very special place to me, almost like a second home. It will be a destination that I will never stop visiting! The image on this page, showcases my adventurous side. When I was younger I loved taking part or having a go at new activities such as body boarding, obstacle courses, swimming, gymnastics and lastly, ballet, which I did up until the age of 16 and passed numerous exams. I was definitely more confident when I was younger, and didn’t care what people thought of me as much. I talk about this further on my ‘Fight or Flight’ page.
FIGURE 14
FIGURES 15-18
On the previous page, the bottom right picture is a picture of me with my school on a weeks trip to ‘Beijing’ China. I was 13 at the time, and it was my first time taking a long- haul flight without my family. I didn’t know what to expect, as it was so out of my comfort zone. But deep down I knew that I could do it, and reminded myself I’m going to Beijing at the age of 13. WOW! I felt like Jaden Smith’s character in The Karate Kid, aha! The people who I went with, I wasn’t particularly close with, however we all bonded on the trip. This made me realise that I’m a lot stronger and more confident than I credit myself for. This gave me a huge confidence boost that I can achieve anything that I set my mind too! On the other hand, it made me realise that I want to travel and see the world, and gain a job which enables me to do so! The other 3 images, are from a trip to Portland Oregon in 2017, to visit my Dad’s best friend. We all had the most amazing time, a holiday we will all cherish for ever! It was my first time visiting an American State, so I was so excited, even more so, as we were able to stay with my Dad’s best friend and his family in their home for just under 3 weeks. This holiday definitely made me more confident as a person. I was exposed to lots of social outings, meeting many new people and visiting places I had never been before. It made me more self assured and confident in myself .
Always been interested in fashion from a young age, with me and my friends often designing our own clothing lines, when we were younger. I took textiles for GCSE and A-Level. I then took a 2 year Level 3 Fashion Diploma course, and that’s where my confidence and passion grew.
FIGURE 19
Since my passion and my confidence grew for fashion, while studying at College and now here at University, I have developed an interest in Fashion Styling. I’ve always been drawn to how people are dressed, both in their everyday lives and in editorial shoots, magazines etc. I have always been praised for my layout of my work and how its always so well put together. When I get comments like these, it really boosts my confidence both in myself and my work! It reassures me that I do have a really good eye for fashion and that I am capable of anything! The image on the right, in which I styled gave me a real confidence boost. My lecturer for that module, stated that I have a ‘real talent for styling’, and my images were some of the coolest shots of the project!

FIGURES 22-23
I first started using Adobe Illustrator whilst I was studying at College. This is when my love for creating digital illustrations began, and it has become a signature look for me, to at least have one digital illustration within my work! I love the use of mixed media, incorporating different styles into my work, to create a varied visual look.
FIGURES 24-25
The marketing element to the course, in my opinion has always been an area where I have struggled, and often found difficult. Within the marketing modules I have previously completed, we are often asked to write structured essays. I sometimes struggle with making my essays make sense, causing me to have self doubt that I can’t form a clear and structured essay. However I have never given up, I’ve always been determined to do the best I can!
A few points I didn’t mention in the mind map are. I always feel like I’m doing my work wrong, I constantly question if that fits with what I have been asked to do. Even if I think it’s a good idea, I doubt if the lecturer or my peers will think it’s a good idea. Always turn to self-doubt and I need to have more belief in myself!

Tokyo has always been a place I have wanted to travel too. Me and my fellow course peers were all due to go on a 4 day trip to Tokyo back in October, however due to COVID-19 that unfortunately didn’t happen, which I was very sad about! A few of the reasons as to why I would live in Tokyo are. I love the Tokyo street wear scene, the variety of fashions and how everyone confidently expresses themselves through clothes, not caring what people think! The vibrancy and busyness of the City- it’s a city that never sleeps! Over the summer holiday period, I bought the book ‘Tokyo’ by photographer ‘Liam Wong’. It’s a book of his work, showcasing pictures of both Tokyo in the day and at night. I love Japanese food, so with all the street markets, café’s and restaurants- I would be very happy! Whenever I’ve watched any video’s or documentary’s about the city, the people always come across really polite and well mannered. As I’ve never been there myself, I don’t know this for certain, however that has been one element that has attracted me to visit the city. The varied amount of fashion stores/brands and designer stores across the city, such as ‘Curios Tokyo’ and ‘WEWILL’.
FIGURES 116-120
Cornwall is one of my favourite places to visit. As mentioned previously I have been visiting Cornwall with my family since I was really young, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. A few of the reasons as to why I would live in Cornwall are; I’m happiest when I’m by the sea Calming Peaceful Tranquil Relaxing environment Beautiful scenery. I’m aware that Tokyo and Cornwall are very different places, however I like the contrast! Considering money is no object, I would have a house/apartment in both places, so travelling back and forth wouldn’t be a problem!

BRAND ME CHAPTER ONE OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH Completing the summer research, has been an insightful and pivotal experience. It has enabled me, to start to underpin myself as a brand, and begin to see the direction my brand is taking. Reflective Questions The first part to the summer research, was answering a series of reflective questions. Personally, this first task enabled me to really understand me as a person, and create a clear, in-depth personal profile of myself. Acknowledging both positive and negative parts of my life, and being honest in my research, allowed me to move forward with each task.
My Childhood I had a great and happy upbringing, loving parents, and family. They have always supported me in everything I do, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them. I can remember nothing other than, positive and happy memories when I think back to my childhood. Looking back at old photos of me, when I was younger, was a lovely trip down memory lane! While I was looking through old photographs, I came across a photo of me, the morning of my first day at primary school. This made me think about how happy and confident I was, during my primary school years. As I previously stated in this chapter one book. “I loved my time at Primary school! I was always very happy, confident, and just loved waking up and going to school every morning. I took part in after school activities, I was part of the student council and loved being part of the school plays we put on each year. I was often praised for my hard work and determination with regards to my studies. As I had such a positive and happy experience at primary school, I never once felt under confident, anxious, or suffered with low mood. Once I left my primary school bubble, and moved on to High School, that’s when I noticed confidence in myself and my work massively dropped.” This leads on to the next reflective question.
Am I fight or flight? As I previously stated in this chapter one book. ‘I definitely have tendencies to do both. I was born 10 weeks early and weighed 3lb and 3oz, so have always been a fighter. From high school onwards, my confidence massively dropped, and I noticed I started to have anxiety in my speech, and still to this day continue to fight this! I find it extremely difficult to join in group discussions, to speak up in class, get my idea’s across verbally, even in my one to one tutorials, and to be honest just in my daily life. My speech anxiety is at its worst, when I am put in a situation, where I have to present my work, which I find so frustrating as there’s nothing more I would love to do, than to be able to fluently present my ideas, opinions and thoughts in a presentation situation, as well as in regular class discussions and one to one chats. BUT this will not define me! And I WILL beat this!’
Am I a Safe Communicator? I made up a mind map, with different questions based around the main question of ‘Am I a safe communicator?’ Below are my questions and answers. Do I always believe in my ideas- am I afraid to put myself out there? •Yes, strong ideas. •Easily turn to self-doubt. Do I think outside of the box? •Presentations of work-yes! •Ideas- yes! •Lack confidence to communicate successfully. Do I feel confident when showcasing my ideas? •Yes, with my ideas/work. •Verbally- I lack confidence. Am I afraid of being judged when presenting? •Yes, very much! •Have I achieved the objective? •What will they think- of me and my work? Do I feel confident when showcasing my thoughts and opinions to my peers? •I have clear ideas, however huge lack of confidence to express them. A few points I didn’t mention in the mind map are. •I always feel like I’m doing my work wrong, I constantly question if that fits with what I have been asked to do. Even if I think it’s a good idea, I doubt if the lecturer or my peers will think it’s a good idea. •Always turn to self-doubt and I need to have more belief in myself!
What is my message? The four main points I want to get across are. •Positivity through clothing •Diversity •Individualism •Positive body image These four key points represent my message of; embracing all body sizes, people to feel confident and safe when expressing themselves, as well as equality shown to everyone. Showcasing positivity!
My message- Inspiration. I created a visual mood board, within in this chapter one book, to showcase my many fashion inspirations. ‘Tokyo street wear’, ‘South Korean fashion style’, ‘Mature preppy styles’, ‘Prints and patterns’, ‘Demure/classy’ and ‘Sustainable/conscious’ clothing. To expand on my reasonings for each inspiration, I annotated them individually. For example, What do I like about Tokyo street wear? ‘I have always loved the ‘Tokyo street style’ scene. The array of varied fashion styles, mixing and matching of prints/patterns, and the varied colours incorporated into outfits. They wear whatever they want and are not bothered what people think, just wearing what makes them feel confident, which portrays positivity, confidence, and individualism. Whenever I see images of Tokyo Street Style, it really inspires me to feel reassured and confident in my own style, and have the same opinion as, I can wear what I want”. Over the summer holidays, I purchased the book ‘Tokyo Street Style’ by ‘Yoko Yagi’. While reading, I came across this reference. “A while ago, a friend of mine came over from Berlin to Japan and said, ‘I feel at home in Tokyo’. In Tokyo people might glance his way, but more. That’s why he feels at ease here. People in Tokyo absolutely don’t give others strange looks, and this applies not only to foreigners but also to anyone dressed in an eccentric fashion.” (Yoko Yagi- 2018) This reference sums up just how non- judgemental Tokyo is, and how the ‘Tokyo Street Style’ scene allows people to confidently express themselves through fashion. Very inspiring!
Questionnaire- What do my friends and family say about me? For me to get an outside response, I decided to ask my friends and family this question. If you could describe me in three words, what three words would you choose? Below are some of their responses. •Caring •Beautiful •Good Natured •Funny •Joyful •Smiling •Trustworthy •Kind •Creative •Considerate •Thoughtful •Artistic •Brave
How does it make me feel, after seeing what my friends and family have said about me? As I previously stated in this chapter one book. “It gave me a confidence boost, that I have a lot of great qualities and personality traits, that my friends and family can recognise. I have struggled with this in the past, as my speech anxiety has often held me back from showcasing my true, caring, creative personality, to other people aside from my friends and family. I would often get thought of as being a ‘shy’, ‘under-confident’ and ‘quiet’ person especially in high school from people that I didn’t know, or teachers that I didn’t feel confident around, to express my true personality. This has always been an issue for me, people assuming I am quiet and haven’t got much to say. I know I do, and all my close friends and family can see it, it’s just my speech anxiety, me not feeling confident enough to just show the real Molly! The comments that really stood out to me are ‘A friend you would want’, ‘considerate’, ‘joyful’, ‘funny’ and ‘good natured’. These words made me feel happy and positive and self-assured, that I am a confident person, with many great qualities. I need to showcase my personality to the world, and care fewer what people think of me!”
What are my strengths and weaknesses? My strengths are… •Considerate •Trustworthy •Reliable •Determined •Strong willed •Caring •Patient •Kind •Honest My weaknesses are… •Indecisive •Doubtful •Reluctant •Time-management When asking myself the question, what are my strengths and weaknesses, I initially found it much easier to think of my weaknesses over my strengths. However, as I read through all my other brand me research, I recognised that I am a lot stronger than I think I am and have many strengths that I am proud to have. It gave me a confidence boost, to have more self-belief in myself and my work, and to not care what people think of me!
What colour am I? As I previously stated in this chapter one book. “The colour pink best represents me and my brand, as it is a positive colour, motivating warm and comforting feelings, that everything will be ok, just always looking on the positive side of every situation! It also symbolizes hope, compassion and understanding, which again is a very important part of my brand, always understanding people, making sure they feel comfortable and safe expressing themselves. The shade of pink has many more meanings and words, that the colour is associated with such as.” •Femininity •Romance/romantic •Thoughtful •Caring •Affectionate •Love •Calming •Nurturing
Conclusion To conclude, completing the summer research homework, as well as the first part of my brand me research, has been extremely insightful and useful to not just my brand, but also to me! I have learned about important characteristics about myself, that I didn’t recognize before, and has enabled me to be more aware when I’m achieving something and to be confident enough to say, I’m good at this! Completing these tasks has given me a confidence boost, that I can achieve things and I’m good at what I do! Moving forward, I need to believe in my abilities, talents, and myself more! Molly this is your year! One reference used- ‘Tokyo street style’ by Yoko Yagi.
