BOOKS WE LIKE WINTER 2016
1984 | Animal Farm GEORGE ORWELL
I liked these titles so much in high school that I read ahead in Animal Farm when it was assigned and consumed 1984 on my own. Orwell knows how to write a good story and each of these feel eerily relevant today.

Cathedral : Stories RAYMOND CARVER
Carver’s last collection of short stories. Although his endings are opaque, his short stories connect with readers at a deep level making readers feel like they aren’t alone in this big world.

Crossing the Heart of Africa JULIAN SMITH
One of the best books I’ve read. This is a true, hilarious account of a current-day journalist who follows the path of an early 20th century explorer up through Africa. Africa then and now, with a lot of sarcasm mixed in. What’s not to love?!

The Demon Under the Microscope THOMAS HAGER
The Demon Under the Microscope is about the development of sulfa drugs (the first synthetic antibiotic) between WWI and WWII. Anything by Thomas Hager is going to be great though. He writes about scientific processes and scientists often overlooked for their contributions to modern-day life, but his books read like mystery novels.

Even After All This Time: a Story of Love, Revolution, and Leaving Iran AFSCHINEH LATIFI
An interesting account of a young woman and her family and how their life is torn apart after the execution of her father during the Iranian Revolution. This book made me appreciate the country we live in and understand further why it’s so desirable for those outside, looking in.

Holidays On Ice DAVID SEDARIS
“I’m afraid I won’t be able to provide the grinding enthusiasm Santa is asking for.” Looking to escape the glow of holiday cheer? Then dive into this collection of short stories from author David Sedaris, specifically The SantaLand Diaries, which expertly transports the reader into the world of corporate retail during the holidays. Once there, you’ll find cheer rates low on the emotional index. The aforementioned story is the strongest but you’ll find plenty of laughs throughout.

The Martian ANDY WEIR
“Mars is a riveting new weekly series on the National Geographic Channel. It weaves documentary-style interviews with contemporary scientists and developers, with a dramatized portrayal of what a mission to Mars might look like in 2033. A great companion book to this television series and a fun read is The Martian: a novel by Andy Weir, the story of a futuristic Robinson Crusoe named Mark Watney, an astronaut who is inadvertently stranded on Mars. With no way to communicate with his mission team or earth, Watney must figure how to survive on a very hostile planet.

Quiet : the Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking SUSAN CAIN
“Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.” ~ Susan Cain, Goodreads Author

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed JON RONSON
“It was a heartbreaking story. He closed his eyes tightly as he told it, so I took the opportunity to quickly check Twitter. I hate not knowing what’s happening on Twitter.” British author Jon Ronson tackles the topic of public shaming and technology with his trademark wit and self-depricating humor. A quick and enjoyable read that will appeal to those who like a little pop-culture with their non-fiction.
