This message is being written on Christmas day, 1957. At this season of the year when the idea of giving (or perhaps, with some, receiving) is uppermost in our minds, I should like to call your attention to another gift which some of you are receiving which may not have occurred to you. It is the gift of a second chance. In my many contacts with students of all ages, I have been tremendously impressed with the increasing number of young men (and a few women) who for various reasons have made unsatisfactory high s c h o o I records or have not taken advantage of acceptable high school records, and have suddenly realized that the world has little to offer people without special training. NIJC, like most junior colleges, can and does provide that special training; thus, giving those who earnestly seek it a second chance to develop their aptitudes to the greatest extent possible. An ever-increasing number of potential students are realizing this, and they should be eternally grateful to the people of the junior college district who have made it possible, and are continuing to make it possible, for them to have a second chance. Most senior colleges cannot provide this opportunity because of rigid entrance requirements and the nature of their curricula. Adherence to tradition is a further deterrent to their acceptance of these "fringe" students. The tremendous growth of iunior colleges is due to the fast that they are not bound by tradition, and they are dedicated to serve the community at whatever level and in as many fields as the law and their budgets permit them to operate. That is why they offer so many students a second chance.
