The Driftwood, in an important sense, is the log book of the North Idaho Junior College . The complete set of annuals portrays the progress and history of the college, year by year. In addition to showing others what was attempted and what was accomplished during your stay here, it will bring back many fond memories as you turn its pages in the years to come. I sincerely hope that knowing that you played an active part in the building and the development of a fine North Idaho Junior College will bring a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment to you. I know that this 1964 Driftwood will portray the pardonable pride that you have in your organizations, your personal success, and your college .
asout OuQ pQes1bent Pres ident P. A. Christianson has been with the college since 1938, five years after this institution was founded as Coeur d'Alene Junior College, and while classes were still being held in the upper stories of the c ity hall. At first only teaching mathematics, he soon made his abilities known and was appointed as the dean of faculty . He continued as dean and instructor after Coeur d'Alene Junior College became North Irlaho Junior Couege in 1939 . His many years of service and loyalty to North Idaho Junior
College were recognized by the board of trustees in 1962, when he was appointed to the position of president of the college upon the death of Dr. G. 0 . Kildow . North Idaho Junior College has greatly benefited from the experienced and perceptive administration of President Christianson, and we students are only too proud to claim him as our own.
President P . A. Christianson

P. A. Christianson, college president; Anna R. Edminster; Walter J. Burns, vice chairman; Charles Russell; G. 0. Wendt, secretary; E. A. Seiter, chairman; Richard Penman.
The well-being and character of any junior college is a direct tribute to those who serve in the capacity of board members . As a college and as a community, we recognize with thanks the time and interest invested by these people in the service to higher education, which is reflected in lhe progress and educational stature of our North Idaho Junior College.
E. A. Seiter, Chairman of the Board
6
Over the past twenty-four years, our junior college has enjoyed a rapid growth in numbers of students as well as a growth in c urriculum. Along with this growth, the college has also had to assume many increases in responsibility, not the least of which bas been the responsibility to its HERSCHELL J. REIBE Dean of M en
students for their personal welfare. The college is cognizant of the problems arising from an increased student body. Its administrators are also awar e of the increase in decisions faced by young people that result from a constantly changing social and economic pattern and the subsequent need for increased education and training.
Our capable deans , who give of their time freely and wbo advise with judgement based
DR. EVA S. FETZ Dean of Women

Oeb1cateb to the memoRy laRRY James haas
February 23, 1944-May 16, 1964 "Beauty is truth, truth beauty, "--that is all Ye know on ea1路th, and all ye need to know. Keats
We remember that Larry especially liked those words from Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn." He believed that they were entirely true. We have seen fit to express our sorrow upon losing Larry by quoting Section XXVII of Tennyson's ~Memoriam, written upon the death of his dear friend, Arthur H. Hallam. I envy not in any moods The captive void of noble rage, The linnet born within the cage, That never knew the summer woods;
Nor, what may count itself as blest, The heart that never plighted troth But stagnates in the weeds of sloth; Nor any want-begotten rest.
I envy not the beast that takes His license in the field of time, Unfettered by the sense of crime, To whom a conscience never wakes;
I hold it true, whate're befall; I feel it, when I sor row most; Tis better to have l oved and lost Than never to have loved at all. Tennyson
