FALL 2018

The Giza Plateau is a world heritage site facing urban encroachment of different patterns demarcating a paradoxical state that is very distinctive of the 21st century. The Giza Plateau embodies a vivid history of power and monumentality since Ancient Egypt. It is the house of the three grand pyramids and the Sphinx together with many more archeological sites and key landmarks; small pyramids, Solar Boat Exhibition and the Grand Egyptian Museum –to be opened soon displaying one of the biggest statues of Ancient Egypt, Ramses-II, in an indoor air-conditioned hall. From an urban perspective, the plateau is a complex platform of timeless architecture that

is topographically raised above its surrounding making it visually distinct as well as geographically unique. Until now, it remains as a desert setting preserving its microclimate establishing itself as an exception that further distinguishes it within the immediate context. With such rich history and massive scale, a contradicting array of urbanization is staged on its edge. Across the historic plateau with its desert-like environment, lies a vibrant informality, Nazlet El-Samman that is quickly encroaching over the heritage site symbolizing the urban condition of the 20th and 21st century city with the urban poor surviving within a struggling city facing economic depression and social fragmentation. On the other hand an exclusive golf course sets itself

right within the perimeter of this urban contradiction and spatial inequality. Outside the Pyramids plateau, the two urban forms represent two isolated archipelagos of lives within metropolitan Cairo. However here, their close proximity with history makes the case even uncanny. Their presence close to the epicenter of world civilization marks the urban agony and alienation of our today’s contemporary city. Where exclusivity dominates in other situations inside confined gated communities, and ordinary patterns of everyday urbanism are confined in enclosed informal settlements, here they come in close contact with a potential for negotiation and mediation.
