Champneys Lands’ End to John O’Groats March Challenge Starts 1st March – 30th March We thought it would be a great idea to bring members together in the pursuit of one goal: keeping active. Motivation is always a challenge even for the most consistent of us so why not join fellow members from other Champneys resorts/hotels all with the common bond of getting outdoors and exercising in the fresh air. The Length of the UK Challenge will take you on a 1,083-mile (1,743 km) road trip from Lands’ End to John O’Groats. For this challenge we are going to use the app STRAVA which will enable us to count up the number of miles completed by each Champneys Club. Each time you complete a distance-based exercise such as running, walking, cycling and record it on the app we will be informed of the distance covered by each club. We will give you updates as the weeks progress and when the challenge is over, we will donate £1000 to a local charity. Start your fitness journey with Champneys on the 1st March and do your best to win the £1000 for charity. Any distance-based activity can count toward reaching the finish line. Do cartwheels if that’s your thing!!!
How to download Strava on to your Smartphone:
Below outlines how to download the app for those who don’t yet have it. It also explains how to join your club and log an activity on Strava. Don’t worry it looks more complicated than it is! If you have a Smart watch you can track your activity on this then just connect your device to Strava which is very straight forward.
Download Strava on to your Smartphone
1. Download the Strava App from your App Store. The App is called Strava: Run & Ride Training and the App logo looks like this;
2. You will then need to create a Strava Account by following the sign-up instructions. If you already have a Strava account then simply log in to your account.
Privacy settings:
1. Please ensure you take the time to look at your privacy settings on Strava. These can be found 'Profile' > 'Settings' (gear icon in the upper right-hand corner) > 'Privacy Controls.'
2. Please note if your privacy settings are set to “Only you” then you will not appear on the club leader board and your miles will not count towards your club total.
How to use Strava Clubs on the Strava App: 1. Once your account is set up you need to request to join your club. The club names are based on your team (resort/hotel/team) as below: • • • • • •
Champneys Tring Members Champneys Henlow Members Champneys Forest Mere Members Champneys Springs Members Champneys Mottram Hall Members Champneys Eastwell Manor Members
2. To find your club, go to the explore button at the bottom of the Strava home page and select Clubs along the top. In the search bar where it says, “Find a Club…”, begin to type your club name e.g. Champneys Tring, Champneys Forest Mere…. AND make sure other is highlighted as the club type, then select your club from the list that has member in the title and request to join. If you prefer you can go direct from here and type in your club as above: • • • • • •
Champneys Tring – www.strava.com/clubs/tringmembers Champneys Forest Mere – www.strava.com/clubs/forestmeremembers Champneys Henlow – www.strava.com/clubs/henlowmembers Champneys Springs – www.strava.com/clubs/springsmembers Eastwell Manor – www.strava.com/clubs/eastwellmanormembers Mottram Hall – www.strava.com/clubs/mottramhallmembers
3. Once you request to join your club and you have been verified and approved, you will be able to create posts on there, track the progress of your team and your activities will automatically be uploaded when you complete a walk, jog, run or cycle. 4. This challenge will begin at 00:00am on Monday 1st March 2021 and will end at 00:00pm on Wednesday 31st March 2021. Each week the miles on the leader board on Strava will be reset, however the running total will be kept and regular updates will be posted on the news feed to keep all team members updated.
How to log your activity on your Smartphone using Strava: If you have a watch which tracks your activity then you will just need to pair this to Strava and your activity will automatically upload when you record your activity. If you do not have a watch then you will need to follow the instructions below. 1. Open the Strava app on your smart phone when you are ready to begin tracking your activity. 2. If it requests for you to log in then please do this following the instructions, using the log in details you used to sign up in the above steps.
3. On the home screen you will see a banner along the bottom – select the button in the middle called “Record”. This will take you to a new page where your location map will show. 4. Along the bottom again you will see four logos; select the second button along to pick your activity; the choices are either Run, Ride, Walk or Hike. If you are walking or hiking always choose RUN as Strava does not record walking miles in the total (for some reason!) 5. You are now ready to begin your activity – if you are getting a message at the top of your screen to say that there is a weak signal then you will need to be outdoors in order for the app to find your GPS. Once the phone has found GPS you can get going. 6. Press Start, you might be asked to agree to the Strava Community Standards, please ensure you read this. 7. Press “I Accept”, and get going! 8. Once you have finished your activity, press the stop button at the bottom of your screen and select finish. You can re-name your activity, and then select Save Activity. Make sure walking is recorded as a run so we get the mileage. 9. Your activity will then show on your activity feed and will automatically count towards your team’s total. GOOD LUCK!!

Frequently Asked Questions You've got questions, we've got answers - let's do this! How do I enter a distance towards the challenge? You can log distances using two methods: 1) Manually - Either via our iPhone and Android apps. Select your exercise type, add a distance and boom, you’re done. You can add a screenshot of your tracker if you wish but it is not required. 2) Automatically – Via the range of apps and devices that Strava connect with. You can enter an activity into the app either by manually entering its distance or by syncing your activities from your favourite fitness tracker or smartwatch. How long does it take to complete the full distance? The amount of time it will take you or your team to complete this journey depends on your fitness level, exercise type and team size. We have allowed 4 weeks but it could be completed in days! What types of exercise count? You can log most types of distance-based exercise such as running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing etc. How do teams work? Basically, you share the distance with the other people in your team. Each time a team member posts a distance your team total will increase. Your team will also be represented on a leader board. You (as in you personally) will also be able to see information about your own achievements and rankings separate from the team. The distance doesn’t have to be divided evenly among team member. You can team up with guru athletes and people just starting out! So, hustle up your fellow members and join the fun!
