Cardinals sink Clippers in 3A playoffs Tyler Wood sat in the middle of the field with his arms outstretched and holding the football. Newton High’s senior quarterback and defensive back intercepted a Nile Rourke pass with 27 seconds left in Wednesday’s Class 3A playoff contest. Rourke had scrambled and eluded Newton’s defenders to drive the Clear Creek-Amana Clippers from their own 3-yard line. The Cardinals were protecting a two-point lead, 23-21, when the Clippers took possession with 1:46 remaining the the game. Wood’s interception sealed the Cardinal victory on the Clippers’ field. It also allowed Newton to advance into the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2007. “I’m proud of the effort our kids gave tonight. They get to play one more game, at least, as a team,” said Ed Ergenbright, Newton head coach, following the game. “They earned this.” Defensively, the Cardinals bent three times but for the most part delivered a strong performance against the Clippers, who finished the season at 7-3. Newton gave up three touchdowns. It also took the ball away from CCA five times. Wood stopped back-to-back Clipper drives in the final four minutes of the game. He recovered a fumble by Rourke, the Clippers’ quarterback, at the Newton 45-yard line with 3:44 on the game clock, then the interception at the end of the contest. Early in the game, sophomore Reese Rosenquist was all over the field making defensive stops. Rosenquist ended up with four solo tackles and three assisted

Deonne Harris, Newton senior running back, scored two first-half touchdowns on runs of three yards and 33 yards. Harris, unofficially, had 10 carries for 74 yards. Fellow senior running back J.T. Thongvanh piled up 55 yards on 18 carries. Nick Easley, senior wide receiver and kicker, missed an extra-point and a 38-yard field goal attempt, but he made up for it by hammering home a 30-yard field goal at the 6:33 mark of the fourth quarter. That proved to give the Cardinals their winning margin.

Newton cross country trio earns All-LHC honors Newton juniors Jacob Thomas and Christian Laube earned All-LHC honors at the Little Hawkeye Conference Championships, finishing in the top 15 of the varsity races. Thomas, who finished 28th a year ago, led the Newton boys to a fourth-place team finish, placing fifth in the 5K race in 16:57. Laube placed seventh for the second year in a row, but improved his time, running the course in 17:03. “Jacob’s time was a personal best and it placed him ninth in Newton’s Top Ten cross country runners,” said Tom Bartello, NHS boys’ head coach. In the varsity boys’ team standings, Pella scored 32 points and Grinnell had 62 points. Dallas CenterGrimes took third with 104 points then came Newton with 110 points. Pella

Christian competed without Jonathan Beltman, who was out with a hip injury, so the Eagles did not have a varsity team score. Thomas and Laube ran in the front pack throughout the race to lead the Cardinal boys. Sophomore Chase Dykstra was the No. 3 runner on the day for Newton, finished 30th in 18:24. Justin Simms, a junior, was 33rd in 18:48, followed by freshman Justin Fischer in 35th at 18:55, junior Grant Osborn in 40th at 19:14 and junior Jacob Arrowood in 44th at 19:57. “The boys ran and competed well today,” Bartello said. “Chase, Justin Sims, Justin Fischer, Grant and Zach Theis in the junior varsity race all had personal-best or season-best times.” Pella Christian was paced by junior Jacob Lensing, who posted a time of 17:56 for 20th place. Freshmen Grant Dunsbergen, Scott Haveman and Samuel Dahm finished in 41st (19:09), 46th (19:53), and 50th (20:17), respectively. Click here to read more…

Newton High’s Coen captured her second LHC girls’ cross country championship in three years. Coen was the Little Hawkeye Conference champion as a freshman. Last year in Grinnell, Coen led the race until the end when Pella’s Kelcey Blommers edged her out and Coen held off Pella’s Tess Roodra for second place. “It’s nice to be a conference champion. I changed my tactic this year, held back during the early part of the race and had more energy for a final kick,” Coen said of her LHS title run Thursday on the Burnett Sports Complex course at Dallas Center. Hedrick, Scotton claim state butterfly medals

6

Four school records established. Two sub-57second swims in the 100-yard butterfly and both swimmers finish in the top six. NCMP’s Aquagirls can say Saturday’s 2014 Iowa Girls’ Diving and Swimming Championships were a success. Junior Samantha Hedrick and senior Hannah Scotton made the podium for the second straight state meet in the 100-yard butterfly for NCMP. Hedrick smashed her own NCMP record in the event earning the second-place medal in 56.09 seconds. Scotton flew under the previous school record also, claiming the sixth-place medal in 56.80 seconds. “I know the girl next to me (Kelsey Drake of Linn-Mar) and what she was capable of. I’ve been up against her before,” Hedrick said. “I knew how fast I needed to take it out and not get completely blown away. My family pumped me up before the meet, encouraging me. It’s special to share it with Hannah.” Scotton collected her third straight state medal in the 100 butterfly. As a sophomore, she finished fifth and was fourth a year ago. “What a great state meet for our girls,” said Sarah Patterson, NCMP head coach. “We came in here wanting to drop times and we did. Everybody gave it their all. Our two butterflies making podium again and to both swim under the school record. To see them hug after the race was special for me as a coach.” Hedrick established a new NCMP record for the

second time in as many weekends. She won a regional championship in 57.11 which eclipsed Scotton’s NCMP record of 57.36. At the state meet, Hedrick used a 25.78-second opening 50 yards to post her second-place finish. Rachel Prendergast, a senior, had never posted a time of under 56 seconds in a 100-yard freestyle race. She did it twice at regional, winning a regional championship in the 100 and helping the Aquagirls qualify for the 400 freestyle relay event at state. Prendergast followed the butterfly swimmers at state. Prendergast recorded her third sub-56-second time, placing 23rd in the 100 freestyle at state with a 55.57-second timing. She had one more in her, swimming on the 400 relay in the final event of the meet. Click here to read more…

Every race, every time and every champion were firsts Saturday for the six boys’ swimming teams comprising the North Central Swim Conference. The teams held the first-ever NCSC boys’ swimming conference meet at Luther College’s Aquatic Center in Decorah. Newton High’s Cardinals made conference history, putting the first conference meet championship in the books. Off the blocks first was the 200-yard medley relay race and the Cardinals’ foursome of freshman Lucas Warner, senior Jake Lensing and juniors Isaak Webb and Aaron King won a close race with Boone. Newton’s time was 1 minute, 42.50 seconds and Boone was second at 1:43.93. “The first conference meet was really exciting. There were great races throughout the day and the pool facility at Luther College is spectacular,” said Dave Hook, Newton head coach. “Our kids performed well. It was a close team race between Decorah, Boone and us.” The Cardinals claimed three NCSC event championships.

Top Card Ace Duece Trey Points piled up by the ones, twos and threes. There were even occasional four-point plays. When it all was said and done, Tyler Wood concluded a storied four-year basketball career for Newton High as the Cardinals’ all-time leading scorer with 1,076 points. Wood is Newton’s most prolific shooter from 3-point field goal range. Newton High School’s boys have only two players in its history to score more than 1,000 points. Wood went into his senior season sitting sixth place on the careerscoring list with 739 points. When the final buzzer sounded in the Class 4A substate game on Feb. 23 at Southeast Polk High School, Wood walked off the basketball court for the final

time for Newton High. Thirteen days earlier, Wood had moved into the top spot on the NHS career scoring list. “It’s a big honor to be the all-time leading scorer for Newton. It’s hard to believe that I — Tyler Wood — am the leading scorer. It’s kind a hard to get a grasp on that fact,” Wood said of his accomplishment. “I’m very blessed to play this game and to have teammates, coaches, my family and friends who believed in me. I couldn’t have done this without my teammates and coaches. You don’t do something like this by yourself.” Wood, a 6-foot guard, reached the 1,000-point plateau on Senior Night in front of a home crowd Feb. 6. He needed 20 points going into the game to get there and he scored 21 points. Wood had 18 points in the first half against Oskaloosa that night, which included a fourpoint play. Sydney Jenkins’ jump shot in the lane with 24 seconds remaining in the game would prove to be the game-winner for Newton High’s Cardinals. But the 43-41 Little Hawkeye Conference win over host Grinnell’s Tigers Tuesday was a full team effort. The Cardinals had the Tigers on the ropes early with a runout of 6-0 to start the game. They led 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals didn’t back down after Grinnell’s 5-foot-11 inch post player Sienna Durr led the Tigers on an 18-6 run for a 21-16 lead at halftime. Grinnell stayed in front through three quarters, 29-25. The Cardinals scored the first six points of the fourth quarter

Sarah Kalkhoff proved one more time Thursday she is a top competitor in the Iowa Class 4A discus. The Newton High senior had the top throw going into the finals of the 4A state discus event — 132 feet, 11 inches. The other seven finalist had to chase her. Clinton junior Erika Hammond was one inch behind Kalkhoff at 132-10. Hammond reeled off a throw of 135-2 on her first attempt in the finals. Kalkhoff was up next. “Usually under pressure, I throw well or lift well. That was what I needed to get that throw in,” Kalkhoff said after

Kalkhoff works at US Olympic weightlifting camp

Sarah Kalkhoff, Newton High senior, knows the benefits of weightlifting. She pointed to her weightlifting as a major factor in her reaching her junior year goal of a state championship in the discus in May. Kalkhoff has been “hitting the weights” since the sixth grade, but not until 18 months ago did she begin Olympic-style weightlifting. Her dedication in the weight room earned Kalkhoff “a great experience” over the summer. At the end of July, Kalkhoff spent time at an elite youth junior camp at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was among 20 up-and-coming athletes working with OTC resident team coach Zygmunt Smalcerz in the weeklong camp. Click here to read more…

Tish, Lee win LHC wrestling championships

Bryce Tish got redemption. Duncan Lee took care of business. The two Newton High junior wrestlers accomplished the same feat in different manners Saturday in Newton High’s gymnasium. Tish (26-12) and Lee (29-9) became first-time Little Hawkeye Conference champions. Tish, who placed third a year ago, captured the 145-pound conference title with a 4-1 decision over Grinnell’s Jake Simon. Tish had pinned Brady Beerbower of Oskaloosa in 54 seconds in a quarterfinal match, then defeated Norwalk’s Ryley Smith 7-2 in the semifinals. “He (Simon) beat meet a few weeks ago, so it was a little redemption out there for me,” Tish said. “It feels great and to get win the championship at home was great. I really didn’t know the score or the situation in the final. I just went out and did what I do.” Lee was seeded No. 1 heading into the tournament in a 195-pound bracket with three wrestlers. He received two byes to reach the championship match, waiting the full day before wrestling. Seely defeated Andrew Seim of Dallas Center-Grimes, 12-5, in a semifinal match.

Newton’s Harris is a state champ

Newton High’s Deonne Harris capped his senior track season with a state track championships. Harris was the only 2014 state finalist returning in the Class 4A state final of the 110-meter high hurdles. He has been the top-ranked high hurdler in 4A almost all season. He didn’t have the top time coming out of district meets last week. Harris produced the top time on Drake’s Blue Oval in the 4A 110-meter hurdle final Saturday. Harris cruised over the hurdles to a 2015 state championship in 14.63 seconds. Nick Wessels, a junior from Waukee, was second in 14.83. “Amazing,” said Harris after collecting what he had worked hard for since his freshman year at Newton. “I had a great race today. I was so worked up about today. After he (Wessels) ran a 14.62 to my 14.83 in preliminaries, I went ‘oh, no.’ “Once I got down there today, I told myself it was the last race of the year and it’s what I’ve been working for and I’m not going to get nervous.” Harris was swarmed by television cameras and reporters following his win. He never stopped smiling. Click here to read more…

His plan was to win and win he did. Harris captured the Iowa Class 4A state championship in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.63 seconds. “Everyone always ask me if I’m going to win and I always tell that’s the plan,” Harris said following Saturday’s race. “It’s amazing. Athletic talent can be found up and down the 2015 Newton High boys’ soccer roster. The Cardinals have 14 returning varsity players back from last year’s squad. The Cardinals have 47 players on the roster, including 20 freshmen. “This year we have a lot of freshmen coming out for boys soccer, and hopefully, they will provide some new energy for our soccer program,” Viravong said. Viravong, who spent five years coaching the NHS girls’ soccer team, begins his second season at the helm of the Cardinal boys’ team. The Cardinals were 4-3 in Little Hawkeye Conference play a year ago, and finished 10-8 overall. Newton opened Class 2A substate play in 2014 with a 3-0 win over Prairie City-Monroe. The Cardinals lost 3-0 to No. 8 Perry in the substate semifinal contest. Leading the Cardinals back on the field are sophomore Josh Ventling as the team’s leading goal scorer and senior Mike McCormick the team’s assist leader. Both players received AllLittle Hawkeye Conference second-team honors. Sophomore defender Jordan Norvell was named to the LHC second-team and junior defender Dalton Nevels returns as a LHC honorable mention selection. Other defenders back for Newton are seniors Jackson Forck, Brock Southern and Jesse Cochran.

Nothing got past her in 100 minutes of regular play. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlee Freese was a wall in goal for Newton High’s Cardinal girls on May 15th in front of a home crowd. H.A. Lynn Stadium was the scene for the second time in a week for two Class 2A ranked girls’ soccer teams clashed. The No. 9 Cardinals were just a little better than the No. 13 AdelDeSoto-Minburn Tigers. The teams played to a scoreless tie through 80 minutes of regulation action. It was still scoreless after two overtime periods. The Cardinals and Tigers went to a shootout. “Ashlee had a phenomenal game. She’s still playing with separated ribs, but doing well,” said Abby Lamont, Newton head coach, following a 1-0 win for the Cardinals. “We couldn’t have won this game without her tonight.” Freese had 13 saves on the night. In the shootout, the Tigers got one of five shots past her. While she was freezing out the Tigers, her teammates came up and drilled three of four penalty kicks in the shootout to win. Ryanne Rausch, Hannah Rhoads and Anna Forsyth got the ball past ADM’s goalkeeper Jessica Craigmile on the penalty kicks for the Cardinals. ADM’s Carli Hansen made a penalty kick in the shootout. The Cardinals had nine shots on goal during the game and two corner kick opportunities. Game Date “The entire team played very Home 04/06/2015 - Mon well. We talked a lot about playing Home 04/09/2015 - Thu confident soccer, and they did just Home 04/11/2015 - Sat that,” Lamont said. “They played Away 04/11/2015 - Sat confidently, communicated very Home 04/14/2015 - Tue well and played like they know how Home 04/18/2015 - Sat Home 04/18/2015 - Sat to play. Cardinal boys claim first tennis win of the season

24

Newton High’s boys broke through into the win column in tennis dual play on May 19. The Cardinals edged out host Des Moines North’s Polar Bears, 6-5. “I can honestly say this was a big step forward for us. Not only by getting a win tonight, but seeing some of the things we have been working on all season start to click,” said Nick Hoskins, NHS boys’ head coach. Newton went 4-2 in singles matches against Des Moines North. John Trettin defeated Binh Doan, 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles and Joe Stammeyer rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Markes Carter at No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, James Trettin dominated Akai Thiphavong, 6-1, 6-0 for Newton. Jared Griffin battled his

way to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over North’s Thomas Gomez. “John, Joe and James were in control from the start of their matches. It was great to see them get out in front and stay in front,” Hoskins said. “Jared was trading punches with his opponent, as it seemed neither one was able to break the others serve. His first set tiebreak was just as close. Jared was able to adapt well to a few adjustments we made after the first set, and took the second set after finally scoring a break point.” Newton’s John Trettin and Stammeyer won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-1, 6-4, against Doan and Gomez. James Trettin combined with Griffin to win the No. 2 doubles match, 6-2, 6-0, against Ostermann and Ryan Thammathay. Click here to read more…

schedule

McKenna Heisdorffer and Megan Pressgrove proved they deserved the No. 1 seed in Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference tennis tournament. The Newton High duo won two third-set tiebreakers to capture the 2015 LHC No. 1 doubles championship. Heisdorffer, a senior, and Pressgrove, a sophomore, had a first-round bye at the tournament. They faced Pella’s Lauren Kriegel and Alli Dingeman in the semifinals. “We came out flat for whatever reason, maybe we didn’t like having the bye and were cold as a result, but we dug ourselves an 0-4 hole to start the match,” said Erick Zehr, Newton head coach. “McKenna and Megan battled back, but lost the first set.” Zehr said the second set was a different story as the Newton pair dictated the terms of the match, winning the set. In the third-set tiebreaker, Heisdorffer and Pressgrove went on to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Heisdorffer and Pressgrove posed a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 win over Pella Christian in the final. They became the second doubles team in the school’s short tournament history to win a flight, Zehr said. “It’s a fantastic accomplishment and I couldn’t be prouder,” Zehr said. Click here to read more…

They hadn’t shot well on Marshalltown’s American Legion Memorial Golf Course and they knew it. The Cardinal girls knew they could do better. Better they did Tuesday as the second, and final, round of the 36hole state tournament was held. Newton was in sixth after the first day of action with a 391. “I was upset with my play the first day, but I was glad I had another day to come back and turn it around,” said Shelbey Cochran, one of two seniors playing for the Cardinals at the state meet. Cochran turned her game around, going from shooting a 100 on Monday to a season’s best 87 for 18 holes on Tuesday. Cochran had rounds of 43 and 44 Tuesday. Click here to read more…

Newton’s Damman, Shores earn LHC golf honors PELLA — A little Little Hawkeye Conference history was made Monday. For the first time since Newton became a member of the conference, the Cardinal boys’ golf team was allowed to compete in the LHC golf conference tournament. Newton’s boys are Class 4A in golf and 4A boys’ golf is a fall sport. All the other boys’ teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference play spring golf. The Iowa High School Athletic Association allowed Newton to compete in the 2015 conference tournament. The Cardinals finished third in Monday’s tournament at Bos Laden Golf Course. They posted a four-man score of 333. Norwalk, which spent one season playing Class 4A golf, won the LHC championship with a 328. Pella was second at 332. Grinnell also posted a 333, but Newton’s fifth score was better than Grinnell’s to break the tie. Oskaloosa’s 345 was good for fifth place followed by Pella Christian with a 357 and Dallas Center-Grimes at 361. Click here to read more…

wenty-three Students Across U.S. Earn Prestigious World Food Prize International Internship

a year in review

Newton High School student will go abroad for eight weeks this summer to gain firsthand experience at an international research center, working to alleviate global hunger. Nearly 1 billion people go hungry every day. As the world faces a growing population, climate volatility and other global challenges, the next generation will be charged with continuing the battle against hunger and finding new solutions to feed the world. This summer, an unprecedented number of American high school and college students – 23 students from 11 states - have earned World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan International Internships and will delve into issues relating to hunger and poverty throughout the world during eight-week, all-expenses-paid summer internships at leading research centers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Anna Barr of Kellogg, Iowa, a senior at Newton High School, is one of the 23 students who

34

has earned an internship and will travel to Guatemala this summer to work at Hormel Foods Corporation’s Project Spammy operations in Sololá. The Borlaug-Ruan Internship is a unique program that allows student interns to participate in projects with distinguished researchers at leading agricultural research centers and NGOs around the globe. While getting a firsthand view of real and pressing food security issues and nutrition problems in poverty-stricken areas, the students become an integral part of a project, spending time in the lab as well as days or weeks at a time in the field conducting research and interviews, and gathering data. The interns are involved in a myriad of global projects dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger such as: fisheries and aquaculture studies; plant biotechnology research; microcredit and the women’s self-help concept; the influence of education on household food security; livestock value chains; and the calculation of Vitamin C concentration in numerous potato varieties.

She spent four years as an assistant coach for then-head coach Sackda Viravong. Click here to read more…

McNew giving back as Cardinal softball coach

Returning to her hometown and being able to coach softball at her alma mater is special for Kristina McNew. When the softball head coaching position at Newton High School opened up, McNew jumped at the opportunity to apply for the position. “What a great opportunity to be back here and be able to give back to the Newton High program through what I’ve learned as a player,” McNew said. She learned she was hired as the Cardinal softball head coach in the fall. Click here to read more…

Newton loyalty

High alma mater & fight song

We’re loyal to you Newton High We’re loyal and true Newton High We’ll back you to stand, against the best in the land, For we know you have sand, Newton High, Rah! Rah! So, smash that blockade Newton High Go crashing ahead Newton High Our team is our fame protector On boys, for we expect a victory from you, Newton High Che-cha cha-rah-rah-rah Che-cha cha-rah-rah-rah Newton High, Newton High, Newton High Fling out that dear old flag of scarlet and black Lead on your sons and daughters fighting for you Like men of old on giants, placing reliance, shouting defiance Osky, wow, wow. Across those broad green plains that nourish our land For honest labor and for learning we stand And unto thee we pledge our heart and hand Our Alma Mater, Newton High
