Judging & Categories
Welcome
W
elcome to this special edition of Sleeper Magazine, dedicated to the AHEAD Awards for Hospitality Experience And Design. We first announced the launch of AHEAD in late 2016, building on the existing success of our European Hotel Design Awards and Asia Hotel Design Awards with the addition of two new regional events, one for the Americas, the other for the Middle East & Africa. Our aim was to create a new global platform to celebrate not just design for design’s sake but the incredible experiences that our community of architects, designers, developers, operators and investors creates for their guests around the world. Over the next 100 pages we tell the story of the first two years of AHEAD from start to finish – our entry process, judges, awards ceremonies and details of our finalists and winners for each regional event. In total, over the two year period we received over 1,600 entries, representing some 600+ projects in 87 countries, assessed by 64 judges. Once our winners were decided and announced in each region, we then hosted AHEAD Global in January 2019, at which these regional winners competed head-to-head for an overall winner in each category. These global winners were announced at two simultaneous live presentations – one at Ham Yard Hotel London, the other at Crosby Street New York. We also opened the voting to the public for the first time, to decide a People’s Choice winner. Finally, following a rigorous re-assessment by our judges, they voted to determine the AHEAD Ultimate Global Winner – the accolade bestowed upon the project they considered the ‘best-of-the-best’ of all the hotels they had looked at. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many sponsors, supporters, and partners who have helped us to bring our vision for the AHEAD Awards to life – and last but not least, our entrants, judges and attendees all around the world. We look forward to continuing to work with you to recognise and celebrate the very best our industry has to offer.

Designed as gathering places for urban explorers, Arlo Hotels’ properties incorporate intelligent design within compact environments, and have been created with both visitor and local community in mind, positioning it as a launch pad for guests to meet like-minded individuals.

Spa Alila is inspired by the karst caves that feature throughout the Yangshuo landscape, and accessed via an ultramodern spiral stone staircase, whilst its walls and floor were crafted from volcanic rocks that were unearthed during construction, giving a jewel-like hue to the interiors.
Featuring three bedrooms, a private gym, theatre and personal butler service, the largest water villa in The Maldives provides 1,500m2 of unparalleled space and stunning sunset views. An eco-awareness theme, muted materials and soothing colour palette see the suite’s artwork and vistas take precedent.

As intimate retreats above NYC’s non-stop commotion, Made Hotel’s guestrooms offer a carefully curated respite for the creative class. Taking cues from nature, with solid walnut accompanying a mix of metals and plenty of texture, judges lauded the soulful, tactile approach.
What was once a classic 1946 roadside motel is now a modern and whimsical interpretation of its former self, with Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa’s design taking cues from nostalgia for the classic American road trip and interiors gleaning inspiration from analogue leisure.

Acting as transition spaces between guestrooms, Meson Nadi’s gardens blend vegetation with architecture to create a holistic experience. Inspired by typical Nicaraguan colonial homes, where bold structures give way to an oasis, the result is exquisite place-making and cultural sensitivity.
With communal spaces central to its ethos, Public has been designed first and foremost to bring people together, with guests welcomed through an oversized glass door and led to its tranquil lobby through a striking Anish Kapoor-inspired, Blade Runner-style escalator.

NoMad Los Angeles is a reinvention of neoclassical landmark Giannini Place, with many of the original features restored and balanced against a contemporary Californian design sensibility, with the use of colour recalling visuals of the former banking institution in a tasteful manner.
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is a meditation on the evolution of the Brooklyn waterfront, with nods to the wharf incorporating both the borough’s contemporary identity and pre-industrial references. The project not only respects location, but anchors and revitalises the area.

With a ceremony styled around the theme of ‘Psychedelic Chic’, guests were surrounded by flower bouquets supplied by McQueens Florists, whilst a Hypnossupplied bed recreated the famous scene of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1969 Bed-Ins for Peace. Punctuated by performances from the Bootleg Beatles, the night wrapped up the deciding regional heats in preparation for the AHEAD Global Biennale.
Marking the culmination of eight heats over two years across four regions, AHEAD Global announced its international winners at simultaneous ceremonies in New York and London on 28 January 2019. A selection of the world’s best hotels were celebrated in London and New York on 28 January, as AHEAD Global rounded out a two-year cycle of regional heats to name its international winners. Celebrating the best in hospitality experiences and design, the event took place simultaneously at Firmdale Hotels’ Ham Yard and Crosby Street properties with support from global founder sponsor Grohe. Presented in London by Sleeper Editor-atLarge Guy Dittrich, and in New York by Tara Mastrelli, the night saw the best-of-the-best from AHEAD’s regional programmes battle it out, with Alila Yangshuo eventually named AHEAD Global Ultimate Winner 2019 and taking home the coveted, Lasvit-designed trophy. Following a rigorous judging process to assess the creative, commercial and experiential achievements of triumphant projects from AHEAD Europe, MEA, Americas and Asia throughout 2017 and 2018, judges named overall winners in categories ranging from Guestrooms to New Concept, recognising the efforts of both established and quickly rising talent, and projects from a tented camp in Botswana’s Okavango Delta to a repurposed post office in the heart of urban Belgium. And with the panel deciding the triumphant projects just hours before the ceremony, they were running against the clock. Selected from the regional events, the panel had their memories jogged by commissioned videos sent in by each shortlisted project before debating each category in depth. After several hours of deliberation and discussion, with the final decisions made, the golden envelopes were readied as guests took their seats for an introduction and wishes of good luck. “This was another spectacular year of judging and I am continually amazed by both the quantity and quality of projects submitted for this prestigious award programme,” commented Larry Traxler, Senior Vice President, Global Design Hilton, and Chair of the AHEAD Americas panel. “AHEAD is unique in that we not only judge on aesthetics but also the customer experience, so it helps to have judges who have visited, slept in the hotels, eaten in the restaurants, and experienced the design physically and not just through photos. We truly cherish the time spent together reviewing
these projects and sharing our perspectives on why they are successful; it is a significant investment of time and energy but very inspirational and thought provoking.” Scooping a double of Urban Newbuild and New Concept, Hoshinoya Tokyo – an inner-city reimagining of the traditional ryokan – was commended for its seamless transference and reinterpretation of both physical and experiential elements, as well as its respect for its cultural significance. Judges further noted the flexibility of the concept, speculating similar transferences for different regions and cultures in the future. Across the prizes recognising specific facilities, the OMA-designed Faena Forum in Faena Hotel Miami Beach took home the award for event spaces, where judges praised its sheer scope and contribution to revitalising a forgotten district. Singapore’s Warehouse Hotel – the big winner at 2018’s AHEAD Asia – was awarded best Lobby & Public Space for its multi-purpose communal areas within a former go-down structure overlooking Robertson Quay. Interior designer Geraldine Dohogne took to the stage in London to accept the award for Zannier Hotels’ 1898 The Post, which drew similar plaudits for its repurposing of an historic Ghent post office in the Conversion category, emerging victorious over impressive runners up including Nordic Choice’s At Six and the Thomas Heatherwick-designed The Silo in Cape Town. Belmond, meanwhile, saw two of its most innovative properties recognised, with Belmond Venice Simplon-Orient Express’ WATGdesigned sleeper train carriages named Best Suite, whilst Muza Lab’s Inge Moore accepted the Lodges & Tented Camps prize for her studio’s work at Botswana’s Belmond Eagle Island Lodge. Part of the special awards along with New Concept, the Visual Identity prize was awarded to Australia’s Jackalope, where Studio Ongarato’s compelling visual language complements the hotel’s distinctive aesthetic. Likewise, covering an area of hotel design often overlooked, the Landscaping & Outdoor Spaces award saw London’s own The Mandrake celebrated for its

verdant courtyard amidst the city’s sprawl of concrete and glass. Lastly, taking home the aforementioned Ultimate Winner prize, as well as that for Resort Hotel, Alila Yangshuo – a converted former sugar mill in an estuary of the Li River – wowed the judges with its redefinition of the traditional resort experience. Noting sensitive restoration work by Vector Architects and the firm’s consideration of a mountainous landscape, the panel also praised an impeccable use of water throughout, a stunning balance between old and new, and the project’s success in putting a relatively obscure Chinese destination on the map. The inaugural AHEAD Global marked a night of firsts, including the first dual-format AHEAD ceremony as well as the first time the programme has opened its voting process to the general public. Presenting the People’s Choice award, Dittrich noted that this category attracted over 100,000 votes from some 7,000 voters before calling Levan Berulava, Managing Director of Adjara Group, the developer behind Georgia’s Stamba Hotel, to the stage. An immensely popular project that not only caught the eye of judges and industry professionals, but regular guests too, Hotel Stamba is set within a converted former propaganda-printing complex, and reimagines a dark past as an inclusive hotel with strong collaborative links to the local community and the repurposing of original equipment, highlighting both the general public’s changing attitudes towards the power and purpose of hotels, as well as just what it takes to appeal to today’s guest. Commenting on the night’s success, Awards Director Matt Turner rounded out the evening on a note of gratitude. “AHEAD Global celebrates the past two years of our Awards for Hospitality Experience and Design, which has seen over 1,600 entries representing over 600 hotel projects,” he concluded. “I can’t begin to tell you how thrilled we’ve been with the response we’ve had to AHEAD around the world. We are deeply honoured to have this opportunity to celebrate incredible hotel projects and the people who create them.”
The global judging panel comprised a selection of experts drawn from the cycle of preceding regional heats, who convened at London’s Ham Yard Hotel to decide the ultimate winners in each category.

Azuma Architect & Associates began the project with the most basic ryokan tradition: the premise that guests remove their shoes before being led into their room.
