Welcome EDITOR • PAUL JAMES Those of you that visited the Salone del Mobile couldn’t have helped but notice the proliferation of designer lamps (yes, they are lamps - you plant bulbs in the ground) in Milan. Designers are facilitating a huge increase in the use of filament lamps, warm LEDs, and designer lamps in their schemes. These new lamps replicate the characteristics of incandescent and halogen lamps in their installations while offering the same level of lighting performance as the traditional equivalents. Filament lamps in particular are a nod to the halcyon days of the incandescent industrial past that has taken on a design life of its own. Mimicking the minimalism of candlelight is perfect for interiors, but in particular hospitality environments, giving a soft, golden glow to hard surfaces thus helping to shape mood and atmosphere. And now, due to the advancement of LED, this can be done in an energy efficient way. But which lamps are leading the way? Karen Smart of Paul Nulty Lighting Design, one of the top emerging practices in hospitality and retail lighting design, gives us the benefit of her experience when it comes to the use of these glowing gems. We also highlight the latest releases, both for the lamps themselves and for the fittings that use them as their centrepiece. DEPUTY EDITOR • HELEN FLETCHER Following the delights of Milan Design Week in April, we bring you an issue bursting with new product launches! Our Euroluce product guide covers no less than ten pages; we have a round-up of all that caught our eye in the various design districts; we take a closer look at the inspiration behind exhibition stand designs; and we get to know the people behind the products. It was interesting to see some of the latest technologies bringing decorative lighting to life and there was definitely a sense of positivity in the air as we walked the halls - turn to page 52 where our coverage starts. Project wise, we take a look at Bocci’s spectacular installation outside the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver; decorative restaurant elements from Graypants and Flos at LWL Museum restaurant in Münster; and a flamboyent vintage inspired lighting design at karaoke bar Blind Dragon in LA. We hope you enoy the read and if you’re planning on attending ICFF, May Design Series or Clerkenwell Design Week make sure you get in touch as the darc team will be out in force! This is the last edition of darc before the May 31st deadline for entering the darc awards. The decorative lighting categories means there are plenty of opportunities for interior designers, lighting designers, architects and suppliers to participate and remember, each company that enters also gets a free profile page in the online darc directory, so get entering and good luck! I hope to see you at the awards ceremony, darc night, in London on September 24th during the London Design Festival.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was constructed in a former landscape of industrial wasteland, roads and dockyards. It twists and cuts into the Spanish skyline and has become an iconic building and a global symbol of regeneration, putting a forgotten city firmly onto the world culture map. The Canadian architect Frank Gehry proved that architecture can push a city into the focus of the world’s public, creating an international and game changing landmark as recognisable and memorable as any other. The construction of the 24,000m 24,000m², $100m museum has created a thriving tourist industry since it opened in 1997 and the design of the museum evokes not only the industrial vitality of Bilbao but also the iconoclastic design of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York. Almost 20 years after opening, the Guggenheim Bilbao is still as much an artwork outside as the works housed inside. Gehry’s design is still stunning. It is a complex, sinuous weaving of surfaces, a delightful play of mathematics and geometry and an urban eye-catcher. The huge sculpture-like building is fashioned from an array of materials; the juxtaposition of fragmented volumes with regular forms finished in stone, curved forms covered with titanium and huge glass walls, and the atrium, a monumentally empty space crowned by a metal dome. Gehry described the organisation of the museum as being like a flower with the galleries acting as the petals peeling off from the central atrium space. Daylight floods in through the glass walls and the skylight set high up in the dome but also plays off the writhing metallic façade, illuminating dark granite and concrete Bilbao streets. The curvaceous, free-form, expressive design seems to continually change in colour and in appearance:

wherever one stands it looks different, and every change in the natural lighting conditions is reflected on the shimmering titanium skin giving the impression of the building being a living organism. The reason for it being our pick this issue is that it’s one of the world’s most interesting facades. It is not only reflective itself but is also reflected in the dock waters surrounding the museum. Whilst the interiors are lauded for their daylight design, it is the facade that is a masterpiece of daylight design unparalleled elsewhere. This is the ninth and penultimate postcard in the series. We really hope you have enjoyed receiving them as much as we have enjoyed curating them. The tenth and final postcard will appear in the next issue of mondo*arc (issue 85) and is a special edition all of its own - it’s been selected based on your responses to the ‘Enjoy Daylight’ attachment on the Hagia Sophia postcard. The cards are letterpress printed and embossed by Prelogram, which launched an indiegogo crowd campaign to re-imagine the series as wall-sized prints. The bold Natural Light In Architecture photography work brilliantly in the larger format and are now available from Prelogram - perfect for studio walls. [darc awards] The darc awards, organised by darc and its sister publication mondo*arc in collaboration with Light Collective, has officially launched with entries now being displayed on the website www. darcawards.com. Following the launch party for the darc awards, the website (www.darcawards. com) is now displaying project and product entries that are flooding in from as far afield as Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Peru, USA, UK and UAE. Paul James, awards director and publishing editor of mondo*arc and darc, commented: “I’m absolutely delighted with the response so far. With our database of over 1,000 international lighting design practices, as well as interior designers and architects, there is a unique opportunity for every practice to get involved in the awards process. We intend to make the darc awards the most accessible and global awards programme ever. After the shortlists have been chosen by an expert panel of international lighting designers, each of the 1,000+ lighting design practices and their designers will be invited to vote on their favourite projects via our specially developed website. Using the model developed by the Oscars where all members vote on the work of their peers, the darc awards will give every independent lighting designer a vote, making this the only truly peer-to-peer lighting design awards in the world.” Each award is split into low and high budgets, thus allowing the smaller projects

a chance to compete and not just given a token ‘Special Projects’ award. Martin Lupton and Sharon Stammers of Light Collective are excited by the prospect of a pluralistic awards event: “Having been involved in many lighting awards programs over many years, this is a great opportunity to build on all of those experiences and try to create a different version of celebrating the best of lighting design where the judging is in the hands of everybody. Helping to shape darc night in collaboration with mondo*arc and darc has given us a chance to create an awards ceremony that is by the people, for the people – it’s the Oscars of lighting design!” All the projects and the companies who have submitted them will be present on the website so that, over time, www.darcawards.com will become a comprehensive online lighting design resource that can be used by designers and clients alike for inspiration. There are also product categories (two architectural and one decorative) that follow the same philosophy resulting in a comprehensive online database of products. Following the voting process the awards ceremony will take place as part of darc night on September 24th, 2015 during London Design Festival. This will be an

atmospheric party in a unique venue in London. Imagine light art, street food, lighting installations… this breaks all the awards rules and will be unlike any other awards ceremony to date. Each commercial partner will be able to show off the capabilities of their product via a series of light installations from collaborations with lighting designers. Currently the manufacturer partners consist of Lucent, Megaman, Innermost, LSE Lighting, KKDC, Concord, L&L Luce&Light, Reggiani, Cooledge, Griven, Zumtobel and Lumino. Technical partner is XL Video. A maximum of twelve partners will be involved in order to create a dozen inspiration spaces at the specially selected venue in London next September. Lighting design practices who will be involved include Speirs+Major, dpa, Light Bureau, Michael Grubb Studio, Elektra, Paul Nulty Lighting Design, BDP, Design In Progress, LDI and Troup Bywaters + Anders darc night will be part of the IYL2015 (International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 ) related activities program and will be promoted by the L-RO (Lighting-Related Organizations) to raise awareness for the lighting design profession and showcase the importance and beauty of light. www.darcawards.com

focal point SCIENCE LIBRARY-CAFE CHIŞINĂU, MOLDOVA The aim of Science Library-Cafe was to create a place that carries an educational purpose. The space intends to consolidate the process of knowledge acquisition and encourage the involvement of young people interested in applied science. Combining public and work space, while increasing the level of involvement of young people in the process of self-education, gives the library-cafe a great atmosphere. Aside from a clever modular seating arrangement, the key element of the space is the central lighting feature, designed by Anna Wigandt. It is aptly named ‘Angewandte Chemie’ which means applied chemistry in German. It resembles classic-looking crystal chandeliers, but in this case, crystals are replaced by simple chemical test tubes in a rigid frame made from black metal. Originally, gradient coloured liquid was to be used instead of LEDs but then, the decision was taken to colour tubes in shades of cognac and fuchsia and place LEDs inside instead, creating an inspiring lighting feature.

A new landmark building for Manchester, Fumo is a space that makes a real statement of intent and offers a unique new dining experience. The feature lighting at Fumo is part of the signature of the brand. The silk covered fittings were sourced from the Middle East, with pendant fittings used within the main space to provide feature ambient lighting. Carroll Design worked to adapt a floor lamp to a ceiling mounted fitting over the bar, emphasising the generous floor to ceiling height, while the back fitting and bars have been finished with Amberlite panels, rear-illuminated with LED light sheet, making the long bar the striking focal point of the space. www.carrolldesign.co.uk

Karaoke Cool

Inspired by 1940’s Shanghai, Built Inc. has given karaoke a resurrection in Blind Dragon’s sultry West Hollywood luminaire layout.

Pics: Elizabeth Daniels

Blind Dragon is the latest lounge concept from H.Wood Group (Henry’s, Bootsy Bellows, The Nice Guy). A bar with an excess of Hollywood glamour and cool, this new ‘it’ bar brings karaoke back into fashion. President and founder of design / build company Built Inc. and New York native, John Sofio, approached this project with a particular process in mind. Sofio first got a feel for the space and its energy, then moved on to sketch ideas for design solutions. First, creating the floorplan and circulation, layering the interior elevations and surfaces, followed by colours and finishes. For Sofio, it is only after knowing where the walls will be located, and where the critical areas of space will be (entry,

bar, seating, booths, walls) that the lighting design “happens”. Darkness is used at Blind Dragon to sculpt light by bouncing it off of horizontal and vertical surfaces and reflected onto areas Sofio wanted to light. Inspired by 1940’s Shanghai, Sofio designs with a keen eye on the user’s experience. “I want to make them feel like they are home, comfortable, invited and wanted,” he said. Each room has been designed to transport guests into another place and time; created to free them of inhibition and encourage performance in front of friends. The house DJ Wade Crescent, who programs the nights at Blind Dragon has a soft spot for leopard print, pineapples, black and

white checkered floors and red and black decor. These elements were touched upon with a crystal pineapple DJ booth (including a brass pineapple lamp), black and white floor in the main Blind Dragon room and black and red has been used in the main lounge for the furniture and wall stains. The goal of the project was to comfort guests through lighting, creating a space where they want to spend their entire night. This was achieved through a number of lighting design choices. Dim lighting was a necessity for creating a comfortable, warm experience, with layers of multiple localised light sources. Outside each karaoke room a red industrial cage light has been chosen to signal the wait staff from

inside the room, minimising the interaction with the guests to allow a more private and intimate experience. Amongst the interior of the bar, hidden LED strips in the columns, and along the edge of the VIP deck, highlight surfaces with indirect light. Lanterns feature throughout the ceiling making use of LED lamps covered in frosted gels to disperse light. These lanterns can also be found above the karaoke rooms and are seen from the main lounge. Lighting in the karaoke rooms is kept minimal to allow for a dark and sexy vibe - just two pin spots - one on the singer and one bouncing off the walls, these are controlled by a Lutron dimming system (as is all the lighting at the venue). Small vintage lamp shade pendants in the various seating areas create intimate moments within the larger space, while simple string lights of Chinese lanterns create a cloud of fixtures above the main room. An amber colour palette was employed throughout to create a sultry, exotic feel. Lighting World in Van Nuys, LA provided all the vintage shades and the components were built by Built Inc. themselves. www.builtinc.com

Fairmont Forest

Featured at this year’s Euroluce, Bocci has unveiled its LED tree-scape with its new public art installation, 16.480.

27

Bocci designed and manufactured 16’s resemble leaves at the tips of the tree-like armature. The structure is embeded in burnt planks of wood rising at staggered heights from the ground.

Glass leaves of light perch on the stems of steel branches in Bocci’s 16.480 installation outside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, Vancouver. Displayed against a clean white backdrop at Bocci’s Euroluce stand, 16.480 is a dramatic installation of 480 Bocci glass 16’s supported by a set of site-specific, tree-like minarets. At the Fairmont Pacific rim, the trees rise out of a landscape constructed of burnt wood planks and form an immersive canopy of light that reaches up to six-metres in height. Surrounded by bench platforms and staggered heights in the landscape, 16.480 runs along the 30-metre length of the hotel’s main entrance. Formed by sequentially pouring three separate layers of coloured, molten glass on a

horizontal plane, each layer has a different opacity that responds to the haphazard shape of the previous pour to create a uniquely layered whole. Two of the layered pieces are then attached together and illuminated with an internal LED lamp to give each leaf a glowing core. Each separate colour layer is visible through the others, with a halo of light captured along the poured edge of the glass. The tree-like structure is comprised of a series of branch and knuckle components to support the leaves. Each armature segment carries low-voltage electricity and diverges into two to four separate branches. Imagined for nearly a decade, 16.480 was first envisioned in 2007 by Bocci’s Creative Director Ormer Arbel. Now with increased

sophistication of both component design and a deeper understanding of glass craft, 16.480 has become a reality. “It is wonderful to now see it coming to life and prominently placed in Vancouver,” commented Arbel. This dramatic public art piece serves as an informal meeting place that exudes Bocci’s vision of creating unity through extraordinary objects. www.bocci.ca

PROJECT / LWL MUSEUM FOR ART AND CULTURE, MUNSTER, GERMANY

Das Lux German lighting design practice Licht Kunst Licht has transformed LWL Museum for Art and Culture’s new restaurant into a space that serves to relax its visitors through the day and into the night.

Pics: Marcus Ebener

29

After a perennial construction period the LWL Museum for Art and Culture in Munster was re-opened in September 2014. Now housing a library, auditorium, bookshop and restaurant, the carefully constructed lighting concept by Licht Kunst Licht offers flexible exhibition illumination for both daytime and evening settings. The lighting concept for the restaurant was developed in close coordination with the architects and the restaurant’s tenant, aiming to offer two distinct luminous qualities. Decorative pendant luminares along the patio façade from Filumen and from Graypants in the refractory facing the Rothenburg

Square, generate a friendly and bright light atmosphere for the daytime use as a café. In the evening hours, the light is transformed in order to create a more introverted, romantic spatial ambience, as the pendant luminaire can be strongly dimmed in order to fade into the background. At the same time, Flos’ adjustable downlights act to direct punctual light on the tables. As an additional third light source, LED Linear’s light strips executed in RGB are integrated underneath the benches and bar furniture producing a soft vertical illumination on the walls. Between the various suppliers involved and

Licht Kunst Licht’s concept, the restaurant space glides seamlessly through the day providing ambient lighting in morning and evening for the LWL Museum visitors to relax and reflect on their immersion in German art and culture. www.lichtkunstlicht.com

PROJECT / WONDERLAND RESTAURANT, QUANTOM OF THE SEA

31

Down the Rabbit Hole Royal Carribean’s Quantum of the Sea offers a culinary journey to wonderland, punctuated by La Murrina’s chandelier. A new technology cruise ship has landed in the Caribbean Sea: Quantum of the Sea of the Royal Carribean. Pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation, the new Quantum Class ships showcase advanced technology; from a 300ft high viewing capsule, North Star, to a skydiving simulator. One of the eighteen restaurants aboard, the Wonderland, carries within it a bespoke lighting feature. In this area, that seats only 62 guests, an exclusive culinary experience has been lit by a magnificent chandelier from La Murrina. Technological development, attention to detail and passion are the characteristics of this unique environment that offers a journey into the world of the imagination of Wonderland. The chandelier, which was designed to

enhance the experience on board, has meticulous dimensions (2,204mm x 4,262mm) and consists of approximately 500 fibreglass elements of different shapes: flower open, corolla bell-shaped, heart and key. Decorative elements are fastened to steel rods of various lengths, some of which are lit by a fibre optic system. Two projectors emanate light of different colours to create the effect of a starry sky, while a third projector illuminates the elements of the composition. The system is controlled via Digital MultipleX offering to passengers spectacular games of light. Wonderland was a challenge won by La Murrina and its team of engineers. It was the first project of its kind made at the company’s headquarters in Turate, Italy.

The lighting concept was developed around the tale of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The idea was to tell a story starting with the interior design, colour, scale and reflection to infuse elements of surprise and delight throughout the entire dining experience. Wonderland intends to bend the realities of what a restaurant is. The magnificent chandelier offers a journey into the imagination. www.lamurrina.com

Lakeside Illumination Shopaholics can now enjoy a well-earned break from retail therapy in the new intu Lakeside food hall, illuminated by Lighting Design International. Intu has added another shopping experience to its catalogue of UK-wide centres with Intu Lakeside, a vast shopping complex situated within the largest concentration of retail and leisure in Europe. The design brief was to increase brightness under deep set soffit areas by day, while allowing the lower level more intimate lighting by night. Lighting Design International took the architects’ start point and the challenges faced, to create a tailor-made final design. LDI worked closely with acdc on the archtectural lighting to reduce visible light fittings by introducing bright clean linear LEDs concealed in various specialist details. A unique and randomised ceiling soffit feature was created through stacking varying custom-formed indirectly illuminated GRG linear ceiling profiles. During the day this soffit lighting provides indirect lighting and increases apparent brightness to balance against natural light. During the evening the feature dims, allowing glare baffled twin recessed downlighters

to provide focused table lighting, saving energy, and reducing the scale of the space for improved ambiance. The seating groups are lit by LED sourced feature pendants from Flos, hung in rows to provide visual interest when viewed from a distance and decorative lighting for charm during evening lighting scenes. Next to these, the fast food retail counters are framed on three sides by evenly back lit panels containing encapsulated organic materials such as twigs and seaweed. The central atrium area is lit by slimmer, lower level beams with recessed diffused linear lighting. These divide the long space, while providing ambient lighting and decorative feature lines of light, both day and night. Additionally, larger, higher level beams with black-finished integrated slots conceal high output narrow beam adjustable track spotlights, providing pools of light to seating groups during the evening. These are controlled by an astronomical time clock and photocell, to be off during the day, unless light levels from daylight

drop too low. All focused downlighting to areas directly adjacent to daylight are commissioned with this logic, to save energy when adequate lighting levels can be provided naturally. The atrium perimeter ceiling soffit is encompassed by tessellated back-lit triangular stretch ceiling panels. This feature provides a bright even soffit in balance against the day lit skylight, reducing the need for downlighters, dimming by night to provide a dynamic, consistent, highly visible feature ribbon of light to bind the scheme together. The feature ceiling can be experienced from all third floor food court areas, and is also visible from the second floor mall area to attract custom and provide visual interest. Stretch ceiling panels were designed to have triangular form, back lit from the sides only. This helps to increase dynamism, creating a unique feature that reduces lighting flatness. The ceiling panels’ triangular shape helps to visually divide long sections, decrease lighting quantities required

34

IN FOCUS / INTU LAKESIDE FOOD HALL, ESSEX, UK

and improve maintenance. This detail is a major focal point, and acdc worked closely with LDI to provide the technology that would create the desired lit effect. Mockups were created to establish the best possible way of lighting the panels, and it was essential that all the LEDs gave a consistent output and colour temperature across the large installation. Above the escalators, at either end of the food court, four-metre wide by one-metre tall, 400kg pendants add a decorative touch, as light beacons welcome guests to the new food court. The brief was to create a decorative lighting beacon that could be seen from the second floor mall to announce the redevelopment of the third floor food court. The scale of the third floor atrium automatically determined that the pendants

had to be large enough to have the impact desired. Given that the architects had originally envisaged a large shallow empire style shade, it was clear that developing a shade of four-metre diameter was going to be a challenge on many levels. Structurally, fabric would be too unpredictable and would prove to be too low weight, allowing the shade to move or sway like a large sail. A shade this large needed lots of light output, to give it prominence and to achieve consistent illumination. The final colour of the shade was much subject of debate, as the architect had originally proposed red, but such a bold colour in a permanent fixture could prove to be unsuitable in the future, or too overpowering in relation to the rest of the architectural scheme. Maintenance would be a further challenge, with the shade hanging at the top of an

escalator in a difficult to access location. LDI took a visual cue from the already specified Flos Tatou fittings in the fast food area, and began to explore how perforated materials for the external drum could add texture and reduce the visual weight of the fitting. The LDI team wanted the shade to feel internally illuminated, like the original fabric shade concept, but using a much more robust material, and perforated steel sheet was the ideal solution. Using the perforated sheet for the external lighting allowed the build up of layers of light, with the internal lighting being provided by a separate linear LED light source, and also allowing the shopping centre to use the shades internal face for possible future graphics application. As the shade concept developed, LDI identified that it had three clear functions,

TECHNICAL DETAILS The four-metre wide by one-metre tall, 400kg pendants provide decorative light over the escalators. The five support arms each support adjustable light fixtures as shown. There is an outer run of LED uplighting for decorative effect and an inner run of LED uplighting to provide ambient lighting to internal shade surfaces.

300mm sections of inner warm white LED uplighting are butted together behind a light diffuser to give a direct and homogenous lighting effect to inner shade faces.

The large pendants are again represented in this diagram. Here we can see the adjustable LED downlighting heads positioned, as well as the suspension wires. A floorplan representation of the shopping mall and the various points where the lighting is needed.

requiring three types of lighting, each with its own individual control. The shade had to provide feature lighting to its exterior that could be seen from a distance, and it was determined that this lighting would be RGBW, allowing the shade to change its colour and personality from day to night, seasonally or over the life time of the shopping centres requirements. The shade had to provide a warm white inviting ambient lighting effect to the top of the escalator and when viewed from below, to soften the view of the glass roof and sky during the late evening and night, this effect was provided by 3,000K linear halo lighting to the internal surfaces of the shade. Finally the shade had to offer high output directional lighting to the top of the stairs to provide adequate light levels for safety. This was achieved via 2,220lm lockable adjustable spotlights. Soon after the shade’s functions, general

aesthetics and scale had been defined by LDI, Mike Stoane Lighting was approached to assist with the shade’s technical design. Mike Stoane Lighting was sure that the shade had to be fully constructed from steel for structural strength and it was agreed that a full scale 1/6 shade mock-up would be produced to test lighting effects and to confirm aesthetics and structural design. With Mike Stoane Lighting’s assistance the shade was developed to have a clutch mechanism at the mounting location, allowing the shade to be rotated to maintain any section from a safe location back away from the top of the staircase. LDI used variations of Mike Stoane Lighting standard luminaires to provide the lighting effect to the large custom built shade, with 2220lm Podgy fittings providing the directional downlight, 1960lm/m G2 high output strip providing the warm white ambient lighting and a similar Mike Stone

Lighting RGB LED profile providing the colour variable external lighting. The final shade incorporates six channels of DALI control for internal white lighting, external white lighting, external RGB lighting and high power spotlighting, and the shade weighs in excess of 300kg. Through considerable design and architectural challenges, the Intu Lakeside food hall has arisen as a well-thought-out space with intelligent lighting decisions. www.lightingdesigninternational.com

IN FOCUS / HOFBURG IMPERIAL PALACE, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Imperialist Ally Vienna’s classicism meets modern design in Denise Hachinger’s LC 1.0 chandelier, which serves to open up the entrance of the Hofburg Imperial Palace complex. Denise Hachinger of neonwhite design is the designer behind the LC 1.0 chandelier in which the classic roots of the Hofburg Imperial Palace meet modern influences. Located at the entrance to Sisi Museum, the Imperial Apartments and the Silver Collection, all part of the Hofburg Imperial Palace complex in Vienna, the chandelier appeases the space with each piece unique - from the coating of the light surfaces to the colour of the frame and LED lights.

The chandelier adds space to the Hofburg’s entrance by drawing up light with the spaces between each piece of the chandelier. The translucent medium allows the large chandelier to make a statement without invading the entrance, reflecting off and complementing the light ceiling and arch way. As the flagship product from neonwhite design’s catalogue, LC 1.0 can transform from a contemporary, yet elegant chandelier into a discrete but efficient uplighting at the

touch of a remote control. Handcrafted in Munich, Germany, the chandelier is available in different technical and aesthetic finishes and combines LED lights with award winning design and German technology. Each element has been individually chosen and varied, with the length of the chandelier also specially adapted to the given ceiling height. With the aim of creating a versatile and transformative light, Hachinger designed LC 1.0 to be opened and closed

freely, creating different lighting moods to suit different situations. Using the remote control, the light effect can produce the full spectrum - from focused lighting to full room lighting as required. Adding to its versality, LC 1.0 is customisable with logos or engravings, coating with crystals or gold lead, through to colour lacquering and anodising, or chandelier pendants. LC 1.0 is both a work of art and a decorative item, using state-of-the-art lighting technology to create the chandelier’s modifiable external shape to diversify its functionality. Ideal for lobbies, stairways and rooms with high ceilings in hotels, corporate headquarters, or restaurants, the LC 1.0 has been awarded several design prizes in Germany and Austria, including the German Design Award and the Prize of the State Salzburg. All the features of the chandelier lend themselves naturally to the entrance space of the Hofburg Imperial Palace, shedding light on the history of Vienna, and lighting the way for guests to immerse themselves in the building’s past. www.neonwhite-design.com

IN FOCUS / BUCA RESTAURANT, TORONTO, CANADA

Coastal Cousin Viso has lit up Costantino Studio’s vision of a third Buca restaurant in Toronto, Canada. Honest materials and an elegant touch were used to create authentic Italian style.

A third location of Buca Restaurants is now open at the foot of the Four Seasons in Yorkville, Toronto, Canada. Owned by Peter Tsebelis, Gus Giazitizidis and Rob Gentile of King Street Food Company, this location features a coastal palette of seafood, a special selection of Italian wines, and a contemporary ambience. Buca worked with Costantino Studios for the design of the restaurant. Designed to be the “coastal cousin” of Buca on King Street, the 3,500sqft restaurant was

given a lighter feel. Designer Guido Costantino sought to keep the space simple and elegant with a tie to the food and the origins behind it. “I spent a lot of time with the chef to truly understand the cuisine,” said Costantino. This objective was in part achieved by using honest materials such as marble, white oak and brass. The lighting was integrated seamlessly with the space and the cuisine. A large chandelier comprising 220 linear brass

tubes that hang from the ceiling - forming a large rectangular shape, was designed for the entrance to create a striking first impression. The lights are long and elegant, of a familiar profile but lighter and more refined - painted with a champagne finish. The brass finished tubes expose light at varying heights from the bottom, while slender metal wire contours each lamp and adds a touch of luxury. During the engineering stage, the weight

41

of the fixtures posed another challenge. In order to hold the weight of the large chandelier at 2,640lbs, the ceiling needed to be reinforced and Unistrut technology was used to hang the fixture properly and safely from the ceiling. Another objective was to achieve sustainable lighting, and each fixture was designed to accommodate LED lamps. Current LED lamping emits cold light, which is challenging and counterintuitive to a warm environment. However, even with

a dimming system the restaurant owners felt the LED lamps did not produce the right luminosity for a restaurant dedicated to Italy and its cuisine. The light needed to feel warm and inviting. For this reason, each lamp was changed to halogen to meet the needs of the design. An honest and sophisticated approach to the lighting design reflects the elegance of this authentic, Italian eatery. www.guidocostantino.com

IN FOCUS / DESIGNER LAMPS

Light Bulb Moments Karen Smart, designer with Paul Nulty Lighting Design, explains the trend of going back to basics for the use of exposed lamps in commercial spaces. There’s a resurgence of going ‘back to basics’ within the realm of decorative lighting. Influenced by the current trends in interior design, which are embracing minimalism and the atmosphere of the Victorian industrial age, the incandescent lamp has become a staple; in part because it emulates the minimalist candlelight, the antithesis of opulence, but also it flatters its surroundings giving a soft glow to hard surfaces. Hipster hang-outs inspired by the Manhattan loft and warehouse scene are tapping into the popular lighting look. Lighting and interior designers are witnessing a huge increase in the use of filament lamps, warm LEDs, and designer lamps from the likes of Plumen and Buster + Punch, as these lamps become the centrepiece of decorative lighting schemes. The Plumen 001 is a low energy feature incandescent and an example of the retrofit trend. The name comes from a combination of beauty and function – ‘plume’ (in reference to the decorative feathers of birds) and ‘lumen’ (the unit for measuring light). As lighting designers, Paul Nulty Lighting Design (PNLD) builds on such trends, elevating what is popular to the next stage; this includes delivering designs with new

and improved low-energy versions. The classic E27 and Squirrel Cage lamp will never go out of fashion – and can be found in many designer homes. The rise of the industrial trend has also caused an increase in exposed bulb shaped lamps in commercial interiors; commercial clients now want the retro aesthetic of the Edison classic but as a low energy alternative to the incandescent lamp so they can save energy and cost. What began as a nod to our industrial past has taken on a design life of its own, with designers harnessing some of the pareddown charm of the bare incandescent lamp on a power cable and propelling it into the future, with decidedly contemporary results that are anything but austere. A great example is The Alice House restaurants in London. The lighting feature is created with bare incandescent squirrel cage lamps from Urban Cottage Industries. Hanging from cables from a central location at the top of the bar in the middle of the restaurant, the style is that of a cascaded web effect that embraces the whole restaurant. In the 19th Century people were in awe of Edison’s lamp and wanted to display it as an object of wonder, and we appear to have come full cycle as we embrace this

aesthetic today. Now we are filling our homes with the latest lighting technology such as Compact Florescent Lamps (CFL) and Light Emitting Diodes (LED) as many low energy variations on the Edison classic have been created. Until recently CFL and LED lamps emitted a cold ambiance and were ugly to look at but today’s lamps are combining aesthetic with low energy. This means that adhering to sustainability regulations and reducing costs no longer have to be at the expense of good design. Commercial lighting costs can be very high if establishments need lighting on all day, every day. In average, lighting takes 25% of electricity bills in the UK so reducing costs is crucial – but implementing ugly lamps and bad quality lighting is not the answer. As designers, it is our role to execute good design with functionality and form, challenge current and previous practices, and improve on what we have already achieved. The result is that we will continue to shape mood and atmosphere across every sector, tuning events into positive experiences and in a way that is sustainable and affordable. A SELECTION OF OUR FAVOURITE LAMPS…

43

Incandescent Range - Urban Cottage Industries Urban Cottage Industries has a great incandescent range with a variety of filament styles and lamp shapes; the benefits of using an incandescent as a light source are they provide a cosy mood and intimate atmosphere. This is due to the lamps having a full spectral output, similar to candlelight, in that they include all colours of the light spectrum from blue to red in an even curve and this, in turn combines to form ‘white light’. Artificial lighting always seeks to stimulate the emotions driven by natural light; if you dim an incandescent lamp the curve slips gently towards the warmer end of the spectrum, this follows the natural progression we expect from a bright white sun to a warmer image at sunset. While incandescent lamps are popular, the challenge they pose is that they are also less energy efficient. Less than 10% of the energy used by the lamp produces light, the rest escapes as heat. They also use more electricity than energy-saving lamps, and most last only approximately 3,000 hours. In 2009, the EU introduced legislation stating that all frosted lamps must be of Class A energy standard and hence sounding

the death knell for all frosted incandescent lamp sources. According to the EU ruling, there are no replacements for clear incandescent lamps so these can remain in circulation. However, the UK seems to be ahead of itself in this instance as the voluntary phasing out of all incandescent lamps is taking place. 001/002 - Plumen Plumen was awarded the Brit Insurance Design of the Year by the Design Museum in London and the prestigious Black Pencil at the D&AD awards in 2011. It is widely considered the creator of the world’s first designer low energy lamp. By adapting the CFL manufacturing process, it has created visually striking lamps that save up to 80% on energy bills and last eight times longer than a standard incandescent lamp. They are not as energy efficient as LED but they do make a design statement and have been a commercial success across the globe. Plumen has been specified in many commercial interior design projects and has been a favourite with clients who want to invest in an energy saving design classic. LED Buster Bulb - Buster + Punch Available in gold, smoked and crystal

coloured glass, each 3W dimmable warm white LED lamp is designed as a statement piece, more about ambience than bright illumination. The resin light pipe at the centre of the lamp range is where all the magic happens. It allows the lamps to create a subtle ambient light, whilst at the same time throw focused spot light onto tables and surfaces below. The lamps also have a 10,000 hour lifespan and consume just 1/20th the energy of incandescent bulbs. They’re not just a straight copy of an incandescent squirrel cage lamp but a clever twist on the classic. The resin light pipe at the centre is a great filament illusion and proves in many ways to be more realistic than LED filaments. The coloured glass options will also allow for interesting installation combinations; we are particularly intrigued by the smoked glass option. Crystal Clear Bulb - Lee Broom Taking inspiration from the delicate craftsmanship of crystal cutting, Crystal Bulb combines industrial influences with decorative qualities, transforming the everyday lamp into a beautiful ornamental light fitting. Each LED crystal lamp is

PNLD recently won the Philips Strand Upcycling competition with its deconstructed light art installation, Anamorphosis. The idea behind Anamorphosis was to communicate the technological advancements in the lighting industry by embracing the traditional and combining it with the ingenuity of the modern. The team wanted to reflect this by exploding the PATT 23, expos-

handcrafted using traditional techniques and hand cut with a classic crystal pattern inspired by those found on traditional whiskey glasses and decanters. Inside the lamp is a dimmable luxram 2W power LED capsule with a 45,000 hour lifespan. We love the way the LED light source catches the light of the cut crystal to create the illusion of a sparkling lamp. These lamps are perfect for luxury hospitality interiors and have been popular with interior designers who already consider it a design classic. At £119 a pop though they are resigned to special projects for clients who want that extra wow factor. LED Crown Brass - MEGAMAN and Tom Dixon MEGAMAN’s Crown Brass LED lamp was specially commissioned to combine with Tom Dixon’s Cell Short pendant and wall light. Now a standard product, the lamp provides functional lighting with a dramatic touch. With a unique, brassplated design, this A60 shape lamp delivers non-glare lighting, just like bowl-mirrored incandescent lamps, with a brass, ‘goldlook’ coating, while saving up to 80% energy when compared with incandescent lamps. The lamp is also capable of dimming and has a 30,000 hour lifespan. The Crown LED range has been a popular

ing the inner workings and technology that make the fitting so great. The Master Clear LED lamps by Philips are arranged in a circular 12-point clock pattern and pulsate on and off clockwise around the PATT 23 when viewed from the front. This reinforces the anamorphic nature of what the viewer sees and further cements how the two companies, Philips and Strand have united over time to form the future.

choice with interior designers as the metallic-plated crown top works well with the industrial look which is popular at the moment. Dim to Warm LED lamp - MEGAMAN The MEGAMAN Dim to Warm lamp emits a warmer light when dimmed. The colour temperature of the LED lamp changes from 2,800K/2,700K to 1,800K when the lamp is dimmed from 100% to 10%, simulating the characteristics of incandescent and halogen lamps. At 6W and with a lamp life of 50,000 hours it’s also pretty energy efficient too. The lamp itself is not very aesthetically pleasing but the dim to warm effect is sure to be a hit with those working in the hospitality sector - especially those with bars and restaurants. The dim to warm effect is the perfect way to set the mood in an environment where a cosy atmosphere is important. LED filament range - Enigma Lighting Enigma Lighting has just launched an LED filament style lamp range which is sure to be popular with clients. The LED Filament lamps look just like their traditional incandescent counterparts thanks to a unique new LED technology that allows for very small LED emitters to be arranged in a linear filament style arrangement.

The glow of the original T1 incandescent inside the lamp is at the centre. Seen through the lens at the front and exposed to the eye from other angles, it shows us not only the development from old to new but also the difference between the two sources and why tungsten should always have a place in the future alongside its modern counterpart. PNLD feels that LED should be another tool in the box of the lighting designer and not just seen as a direct replacement for something that fundamentally gives a different effect. The benefits of LED should be celebrated but then so should that of other older lamp sources where it is appropriate. For PNLD Anamorphosis is not just a history lesson or just something beautiful to look at. It is a message that should make us all think carefully about the past, present and future of our industry and the tools with which we light it. www.paulnulty.co.uk

These emitters are then powered using a traditional glass insulated circuit similar to that found in a traditional incandescent lamp. The end result is a lamp that functions and looks virtually identical to an incandescent. LED filament lamps typically have a shorter life span than that of regular LED lamps with most rated at 15,000 hours but these figures are amazing in comparison to traditional incandescent technology which lasts just 500 to 3,000 hours. Enigma Lighting’s 6W squirrel cage lamp uses very little electricity and is dimmable which makes it very versatile. The lamp also retails at just £17 and is sure to be a market contender at this price. Master Clear LED - Philips What makes the new Master Clear LED bulb particularly special is the lens inside, which not only works as a light diffuser, but does so in a way that looks like a sparkling filament. The lamp will be a big hit for those who want as close a match to the traditional incandescent A60 lamp. The 6W lamp runs for up to 25,000 hours and is dimmable for flexibility and retails at around £12.50 so is the most affordable on this list. I can see this in people’s homes, not just in commercial projects and that is very exciting.

Lamp of Approval Sometimes it is best to see a lamp in action. So, in continuation with this issue’s lamp special, here we look at examples of projects that have utilised the lamp’s beautiful simplicity. Alice House, London, UK There is not just one Alice House, but two - both in London - one in West Hampstead and the other in Queen’s Park. Each offers good food, a great selection of drinks and a relaxed atmosphere. Lighting the Alice Houses was the first major lighting commission for Urban Cottage Industries’ founders. The Alice House in West Hampstead (nicknamed ‘The Den’) offers alfresco dining, craft beers, teapot cocktails and a love of gin. The Alice House Queen’s Park is big on vintage glamour, urban street art and a working library. There’s a rustic charm about both venues which is accentuated by the warm, alluring glow of a multitude

of incandescent pendant lamps. They’re everywhere, each one suspended by dark fabric cable. The restaurant lighting that was provided for both Alice Houses is still available with dozens of colour options for the fabric cable in round and twist. All the flexes are made in Milan, Italy to strict European safety standards. The filament lamp range includes bulbs of various shapes, sizes and filament styles. The pear shaped light bulbs used throughout the Alice House produce a mellow and flattering light with lovely rendering of colours. www.urbancottageindustries.com

Kulm Hotel, St. Moritz, Switzerland The five star Kulm Hotel, located above Lake St. Moritz, Switzerland, was the first hotel in the country to use electric lighting in 1878. Now, it has introduced MEGAMAN LED lighting technology to deliver cost and energy savings. Although modernised to ensure luxury, the original hotel building is still clearly visible. With tradition as a driving force for the hotel’s owners, Kurt Buchegger, electrical and lighting consultant at Kurt Buchegger Ltd recommended that the hotel trial MEGAMAN’s range of 2,800k, dimmable and non-dimmable LED classic lamps, to maintain its traditional feel. Buchegger said: “When replacing the original lighting with LED lamps at such a prestigious venue, we had to run tests to

ensure that the staff, guests and hotel owners were happy with the changes.” Lamps provided include MEGAMAN’s LED A60 classic E27, 2,800k, dimmable and non-dimmable in 7W – 11W for use throughout the hotel’s public and private spaces and MEGAMAN’s LED Reflector Series PAR 16 7W, 2,800K, GU10 for the hotel’s corridors and other public areas. These lamps have also been interspersed with others including dimmable LED PAR16’s and MR16’s in warm white. By incorporating MEGAMAN’s lighting technology, the Kulm Hotel St Moritz has maintained its warm, welcoming environment, whilst delivering significant energy efficiencies. www.megamanuk.com

Forest Hill, London, UK Designed by Desislava Georgieva of Mr Resistor, the lighting scheme for the converted warehouse in Forest Hill was designed to complement and highlight the industrial interior features of the property. Modern fittings were used throughout with the newest LED products incorporated to keep energy consumption to a minimum. By integrating hidden light sources both inside and out enabled features such as the central pendant to be a key decorative piece but also have a sufficient amount of light to create a functional, liveable lighting scheme. www.mr-resistor.co.uk

British product and interior designer Lee Broom transformed a street of disused shops in Milan’s San Gregorio district on via Alfredo Cappellini to create The Department Store, his largest exhibition to date with the launch of over 20 new products. The showroom took visitors on an immersive journey across two floors; moving between tableau’s through the exhibition, with each environment representing a surreal take on twelve different departments. Products included his Crescent and Ring Lights, the Acid Marble Collection, and the Chapel Light, amongst others, each bringing its department backdrop to life with Broom’s signature grey to accentuate the colours and materials of the new pieces. www.leebroom.com

Arik Levy Visitors to Vibia’s Euroluce stand had the pleasure of seeing Arik Levy’s latest lighting experience Curtain. Here, darc take a look at the man behind the design.

Artist, technician, photographer, designer and video artist, Arik Levy’s skills are multi-disciplinary and his work can be seen in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. Best known for his sculptures (such as his signature Rock pieces), his installations, limited editions and design, Levy nevertheless feels “the world is about people, not objects”. Hailing from Israel, Levy moved to Europe after his first participation in a group sculpture exhibition in Tel-Aviv in 1986. Following studies at the Art Center Europe in Switzerland he gained a distinction in Industrial Design in 1991 and, after a stint in Japan - where he consolidated his ideas producing products and pieces for exhibitions, Levy returned to Europe where he contributed his artistry to another field - contemporary dance and opera, by way of set design. The creation of his studio in Paris, which he still works out of today, meant a foray back to his first love - art and industrial design, as well as other branches of his talents.

At this year’s Euroluce, one of Levy’s latest designs made itself known on the Vibia stand. Curtain, is a new lighting typology - a light fitting and partitioning system combined; a light fitting that is equally functional in the off position as it is in the on position. The system is more a lighting experience than a traditional light fitting and can be used in a myriad of ways depending on the different applications of the various versions: as a suspended chandelier of assorted hanging light planes; a feature light fitting above a dining table; an installation within a reception or public space; or equally as a floor to ceiling partition system for office and professional spaces. There are three different variations of the Curtain system, which combine the same elements in slightly different ways; there is a top rail LED fitting, a bottom rail LED fitting and both top and bottom rail LED fitting which is most suitable for use as a partition system.

Each version reacts with the reflecting qualities of the hanging fabric, which in turn is specific to each of the different versions, playing with the tonal shadows and patterns of the textiles. The system is manufactured in different widths and lengths, adjustable in terms of the suspension cables used to support the fitting from the ceiling. Curtain also makes an impact when used as a partitioning system within large open plan spaces, such as offices where architectural design and character is an important consideration. Considering himself now more of a ‘feeling’ artist, Levy continues to contribute substantially to the interior and exterior milieu, his work including public sculptures, as well as complete environments that can be adapted for multi-use. “Life is a system of signs and symbols,” he says, “where nothing is quite as it seems.” www.ariklevy.fr www.vibia.com

Lucie Koldova Lucie Koldova is a prominent Czech designer based in Prague and Paris. Presented on this year’s Brokis Euroluce stand, her work - ever pure and charismatic - focuses on furniture, glass sculptures, timeless lighting collections and objects of desire. Born in the Czech Republic in 1983, lighting and furniture designer Lucie Koldova has a passion for developing glass sculptures, lights and furniture pieces that are objects of desire - chic and pure in their design. Having graduated in 2009 at Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Koldova then moved to Paris to begin her career, where she established her own design studio in order to work with international clients, editors and galleries. Notable clients include La Chance, Haymann Editions and Gallery S. Bensimon in France; When Objects Work and Per/use in Belgium; and Mmcite, DuPont, Brokis, Lugi, Lasvit and Křehký Gallery in Czech Republic. Koldova has since exhibited her work around the world and participated in numerous design weeks in Vienna, Milan, London, Paris, Brussels, Stockholm, Tokyo, Berlin and New York and then in 2014 opened a studio in Prague. Koldova’s work stretches from daily products, conceptual space, urban areas to gallery objects and limited series. She uses

mostly classic craftsmanship with a main focus on basic craft materials such as wood and glass. Koldova blends glass and wood while pushing the proportions of her lighting objects to the maximum. The charismatic, clean and elegant result forms the basis of her vocabulary that she has since refined and explored for both Lasvit and more recently Brokis – for whom she is currently Art Director. At this year’s Euroluce, Koldova premiered her latest Brokis collection Lightline as well as several other new items including the stylish variable lights Flutes, a new wall version of the Mona collection and new material and colour options for existing exclusive lighting series. Lightline celebrates the material of glass in every component. The design brings together three different glass processing techniques in a single luminous and monumental sculptural object. Hand-pressed glass is used to craft the base, onto which the closed hand-blow glass body of the lamp is fitted. The light source projects its glow

upon the top etched plane of the lamp, which in profile appears as a thin line of light hovering over the translucent body of the lamp. In Flutes we see suspension lights suited for hotel spaces. However, its range of potential application goes far beyond the boundaries of the project specifications. As the name suggests, inspiration for the new collection was found in the flute and the four stylised openings in the body of the light not only embrace that source of inspiration, they allow for an even greater degree of variation – the angle at which the light hangs is dependent upon which opening the suspension cable is passed through. Koldova enjoys working with contrasts, colours and proportions, which are often pushed to the limits. Her design approach can be described as sensual, innovative with simple yet significant visual language. www.luciekoldova.com www.brokis.cz

MILAN DESIGN WEEK / EUROLUCE STAND FEATURE

Stand and Deliver Milan Design Week showcases the very best in design each year. Over the next few pages, you’ll find a handful of Euroluce exhibiton stands that caught our eye. Pics: Rich Stapleton for Cereal Magazine

Having featured in a recent edition of style and travel bible Cereal, UK-based Anglepoise collaborated with the magazine’s editorial team once more for its Euroluce stand design. Edited highlights from new and classic Anglepoise collections were selected and presented in the inimitable Cereal way. www.anglepoise.com

Designed exclusively for Euroluce and featuring Buster + Punch’s new Heavy Metal pendant light, which is available in three solid finishes: steel, rose copper and smoked bronze, the dramatic design feature is completed with the addition of the new LED Buster bulb. The entire fitting uses the same energy as six traditional bulbs. www.busterandpunch.com

On the DelightFull stand a slight brutalist approach was taken, a movement in architecture that flourished in the 50s. A large corridor with a red metal grate on the wall was incorporated to give it an urban touch, while Corten steel gave an aged and colder look to contrast with DelightFull’s shiny golden pieces. The repetitive frames on the edge of the stand gave intimacy to the people inside and support to the massive roof. www.delightfull.eu

Striving to be “as British as London itself” has always been an integral part of innermost’s company philosophy; its quirky and rebellious approach to design driven by high-spirited London culture. Together with Stone Designs, innermost translated that sensibility into a visual language for its exhibition stand. This is the story of a culture with greatly antagonistic qualities - on the one hand, classic English tradition and on the other hand, the tumultuous punk culture. innermost exists in the coming together of these heterogeneous elements, purveying taste and quality with a non-conformist attitude. www.innermost.net

An evocative installation by designer Alessandro La Spada was created in the exhibition space presented by La Murrina. Newly released creations found their perfect setting in a rarefied atmosphere inspired by the City of the Doges: Venice, as you have never seen it before paying tribute to the craftsmanship of the new collections in Murano glass, stemming from some important artistic collaborations. Gothic windows and typical oak mooring posts were called on to valorise the products on display, which made an imaginative return to their place of origin to recall its uniqueness and splendour. www.lamurrina.com

Designed by Migliore+Servetto Architects and conceived as a promenade of discovery amidst new products - from the outside, high veils defined Luceplan’s space along its edges, with effects of transparency, shadow and passages of light. Inside, the raised stage of the client services area formed a backdrop for the perspective that crossed the space. Along the promenade, below the inclined planes of the internal veils, areas opened up for the discovery of new projects. Each new item was presented inside a dedicated space for an in-depth, direct, close encounter. A place in which to appreciate and assess technological lighting efficacy and the design of the object, in a path of direct experience. www.luceplan.com

SLAMP presented nine new collections in a world premiere at this year’s Euroluce - a perfect combination of LED technology and decorative elements, contextualised in a living room of 500sqm, which offered an intimate view of the new projects and SLAMP’s design icons. Suggestions of light also reached the Milan Triennale, where during the Fuorisalone, the majestic chandelier, four-metres in diameter, designed by the artist Jacopo Foggini and created by SLAMP, made an appearance. The stage piece, with colours that fade between the tones of white and blue, is part of the restyling project of the whole Art Theatre, and will remain the permanent protagonist of the space. www.slamp.it

Designed by Rifé Design Studio, the Vibia stand could be described as mini architecture in which we find various types of buildings featuring flat, low, sloping spaces. Rifé’s commitment was to work the volumes of the spaces with translucent fibres that allow interaction between environments. A bounded transparency, which in some cases were overshadowed. Transparency allows the space to be converted into a large lamp and allows to intuit what goes on inside. www.vibia.com

Bocci’s second showing at Euroluce coincided with a pivotal moment for the company. 2015 marks a bridge between two decades: ten years since Bocci launched in Vancouver and a commitment to the next ten years with a newly signed lease on a major Berlin expansion. Bocci’s return to Euroluce was an opportunity for self-reflection; a moment to consider the past with a showcase of Bocci’s full collection and a glimpse of its future with the debut of objects and technology that were previously beyond reach. www.bocci.ca

Benjamin Hubert As part of the Glass is Tomorrow workshop, which took part in this year’s Milan Design Week, the Benjamin Hubert Studio celebrated purity of form through its Beacon range of lamps. British designer Benjamin Hubert established his London-based studio in 2007 having graduated from Loughborough University in 2006 with a (BA) first class honours in Industrial Design and Technology. Ever since, it has been his passion and the ethos of the studio, which specialises in industrial design across furniture, lighting and other product sectors, to challenge the everyday application of materials, traditions of construction and ideas of context. The studio works on a diverse range of projects including both mass / batch produced consumer products and limited editions / one offs. The studio also focuses on sustainability as an integrated part of each project, whether it’s creating products that will last a lifetime, both from a quality and durability perspective, or from a recyclability and more holistic infrastructure approach. Inspiration comes directly from the studio’s

network of factories and workshop environments where the products are made, with the brand creating timeless objects that do not respond to trends or fashion but rely on usability analysis, interaction, materiality, sustainability and a process of visual reduction. Beacon - on show during this year’s Milan Design Week - is a pendant and desk light from Benjamin Hubert, designed as part of the Glass is Tomorrow workshop held recently in Denizli, Turkey, which aims to establish an exchange of knowledge between glass and design professionals across Europe. Designed to explore how traditional glass working techniques can be adapted to contemporary use in lighting, and how light itself can be used as an integral element to the design, the Beacon lamps celebrate purity of form and comprise two simple and elegant blown glass components - the pen-

dant and desk lamps have the same internal component, but differ in their external component. The common interior component is handblown and then cold-worked using a traditional technique known as battuto, in which the surface of the glass is hand-cut on a girding machine to create a pattern of grindings of variable shape and depth. Light is then projected through the internal component, creating decorative caustics caused by the shadow and highlights of the battuto pattern on the external blown glass component. The external component of both the pendant and desk lamp is then sandblasted on the interior to better capture the caustic effect and to diffuse the light. There are four different battuto patterns in the Beacon collection, each creating a different pattern of light and shadow. www.benjaminhubert.co.uk

MILAN DESIGN WEEK / EUROLUCE REVIEW

Showstoppers Innovation and creativity shine at Salone del Mobile 2015. This year’s Salone del Mobile closed its doors to great acclaim and renewed industry optimism. Having welcomed over 310,000 visitors through its doors – over a gruelling six-day schedule – official figures show 69% of the high profile operators came from outside of Italy and there was a strong presence of Russian operators. China proved the leading market and Germany was the second country of provenance for sectoral operators. 2015 saw a particularly high number of visitors from the Middle East; Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Egypt in particular. Visitor numbers from the US, UK and India were also up. “The data confirms the importance and attractiveness of an event that showcases the very best of Italian and

international furnishing,” said Salone del Mobile President, Roberto Snaidero. “The companies are delighted with the quality of attendees and the solid business results achieved over the six days of the fair, thanks to their own commitment and dedication to tackling and overcoming the tough financial situation of the last few years. The Salone therefore constitutes the first signal of the forecast recovery.” In the Euroluce halls, which takes place every two years, the darc team saw a number of innovations, collaborations, and new launches throughout the week – details of which you can find over the next ten pages! www.salonemilano.it

Sparkle Saas Instruments This design in crystal glass focuses on the hypnotic sparkle that occurs when light hits the faceted surface of a hand blown, hand cut piece of glass. The effect is similar to that of an open fire or the moonlight on the waves of the sea. Alexander Lervik brings crystal back in a modern and simple design that fits into a variety of spaces. www.saas.fi

Impossible Collection Metal Lux

This chandelier is a dazzling explosion of glass, carefully balanced in volume, in the alternation of three colour combinations, in the asymmetrical game of the arms. The frame is chromed and the lighting is LED. Available colours: crystal/grey/brown/cognac/white, crystal/liquid citron/aquamarine/grey/ white, crystal/white/cognac/bluastro. www.barovier.com

Hangar Design Group Showcased at this year’s Euroluce, Italian design agency Hangar Design Group collaborates with Vistosi on its latest pendant lamp collection - Futura. Established in 1980 by Aberto Bovo and Sandro Manente, Hangar Design Group is a multidisciplinary design and communication firm. Right from the start, the aim of the agency was to gather under one name the various departments dedicated to communication, graphics, retail, industrial design and branding strategies. Today, boasting a staff of over 40 collaborators operating in Europe, Asia and the US, Hangar Design Group is an atypical multidisciplinary company with its headquarters in Italy. Aberto Bovo was born in Padua in 1954. Since graduating in architecture in Venice, he concentrated on the dialogue between various disciplinary activities. Greatly interested in all new cultural phenomena, he is attentive to socio-cultural changes, defining them from the perspective of design to give ‘form’ to the studio’s philosophy. Taking up

the role of strategic art director at Hangar Design Group, he is focused on the aesthetic aspect of design, developing a specific professional ability in the field of contemporary creative scenarios. A firm believer in the importance of innovation, since 1990 Bovo has pursued the strategy of the design team, gathering within the studio a large number of young creatives with interdisciplinary skills. Sandro Manente was born in Venice in 1957. Ever since he graduated and began his career as an architect he studied graphic design and its use on the market as a place of communication. Thus he developed the ability to foresee trends in colour, pattern and materials. Since 1981 he has used this ability in the field of interior design as Associate Partner of Hangar Design Group. A true enthusiast of handicraft skills, his

design projects are based on functionality and pragmatism, which adapt design to the needs of manufacturing and production. In Hangar Design Group he coordinates the different departments, paying special attention to the flexibility of the various disciplines involved in the project and, in particular, to visual design. For this year’s Euroluce show Hangar Design Group collaborated with Vistosi on its Futura pendant lamp collection. Using blown glass, the range is available in three exclusive colours combined with different finishes on the metal ring. With the glass blown in one piece, it is the handcrafted process that makes the colour transparent in the upper part of the lamp and diffuser in the bottom part. www.hangar.it www.vistosi.com

Swarm

Luma in production

Luma

Zaha Hadid Internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid once again pushed the boundaries of design in her collaboration with WonderGlass for this year’s Milan Design Week. Fragmented geometry and bold fluid forms ripple through the wake of Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid’s ground breaking work. As the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, Hadid has worked on projects all over the world, including a collaboration with WonderGlass exhibited during Milan Design Week. WonderGlass held its showroom in Milan’s Ventura, design district and the city’s historic centre, the grand Instituto dei Ciechi, an institute for the blind. WonderGlass focuses on interactive installations that can not only be seen but also be touched. Hadid’s Luma and Swarm pieces embodied this focus in their display in a dark room with translucent white curtains draping down from high

ceilings. Hadid Design endorses the traditional techniques of glass craftsmanship to explore solutions for futuristic and stylish projects; Luma and Swarm are no exception. The seamless dialogue of subtle and elegant refractions onto organic surfaces is magnified by the presence of Swarm, a statement chandelier signed by Hadid’s London-based studio. Composed of black crystal volumes suspended in dynamic forms, the intricately layered spatial composition of the chandelier presents itself as a unified whole. From underneath, its separated crystal suspensions can be distinguished, emphasising unity without the restrictions of symmetry. The Luma chandelier, is another sculptural

composition of four tubular segments that follow a radial trajectory and dramatically transform into diamond-shaped luminaries to subtly diffuse light with their materiality. Informed by the precise mathematical principles that define natural surface tension, each individual glass segment has been hand-blown and celebrates the unrivalled logic and beauty found within nature. Zahid’s new creations testify her focus on quality and exploration, and affirm the WonderGlass drive to find the point of balance between the innovation of the lighting industry, human sensibility and the frontiers of craftsmanship. www.zaha-hadid.com www.wonder-glass.com

Carlotta de Bevilacqua A major player in contemporary architecture and design, we take a look at the woman behind Artemide’s latest decorative offering on show in Milan.

Designer, entrepreneur and university lecturer, Carlotta de Bevilacqua is a major player in the world of contemporary architecture and design. Having graduated from Politecnico di Milano in architecture in 1983, today she has her own architecture and design office and is Artemide Vice President and General Manager for brand strategy and product innovation. With a wide range of experience and appointed Art Director of Memphis and Alias from 1989 to 1993, she has expounded important research on lighting design and investigates aspects of light related to physiological and psychological well-being, by offering new qualitative standards in life. From 1999 to 2001 Bevilacqua was a workshop lecturer and project leader of innovative products within the Strategic Design Master (Mip) program. In 2000 she acquired Danese, the leading company in Italian design during the 60/70’s and in a very short time revived the business, gaining new market shares and a new leadership. From 2001 to 2004, Bevilacqua was lecturer in the Design Master Program at Domus Academy in Milan and today frequently lectures at Bocconi University and Politecnico di Milano. More recently, in 2013 Bevilaqua became a member of the Board of Direction of Fondazione La Triennale di Milano.

Bevilacqua’s presence is very much appreciated at conventions and seminars with the aim to explore the changes in contemporary society, the new boundaries of the international markets and the evolving needs of the environment in terms of energetic sustainability. For both Artemide and Danese she has designed new generation LED products, recognised with several patents, introducing constant new technological scenarios. One of her most recent designs - Incalmo, featured as part of this year’s Euroluce presentation. Incalmo refers to a glass-blowing technique refined in Murano, Venice during the 16th Century aimed at obtaining multiple areas of different colours on the same surface. Incalmo, together with another of Bevilacqua’s creations - Incipit, operates in perfect harmony, as horizontal, alternating stripes of transparent, white or grey blown glass, transforming its decorative body into a screening element reaching the areas below its narrower angles and diffusing light into the space. Incalmo is a metaphor for combining the evolving LED technological innovation with ancient craftsmanship skills deeply rooted in Artemide’s history. www.debevilacqua.com www.artemide.com

Tom Dixon presents The Cinema This year, as part of designjunction edit Milan, Tom Dixon presented The Cinema. Made up of research into shape, texture and finishes, a manufacturing technique obsession and a deep vein of eccentrically British narratives, the 400sqm abandoned theatre held an entertainment show of Dixon’s latest designs including Melt, Lens and Wingback. Each day the cinema included light shows presenting new products,VIP lounge by Dixon’s partner Sony, and an accessories shop. As a design entrepreneur in the modern age, Dixon is committed to the creation of artefact as well as the communication, contextualisation and commercialisation of ideas. CONDITIONAL THINKING

if...

we believed in magic, then it would come in the form of Lasvit’s breathtaking Supernova, designed in collaboration with Petra Krausova and presented at this year’s Euroluce. An interactive glass kinetic sculpture that introduces the future into the present, it magically transforms itself in both time and space, responding to the viewer’s movement by changing its form. Composed of clear glass elements with linear texture that creates fascinating light patterns while moving through various angles, Supernova invites us to look beyond the glass. Its beauty comes alive with unexpected movement and refraction of light. www.lasvit.com www.petra-krausova.com
