WELCOME... ...to the European Festival Awards 2015 Somehow it’s already that time of year again when we gather together to celebrate the collective achievements of our beloved festival industry. It’s been another incredible year for European festivals, and so we’ll be revelling in the sector’s myriad success stories throughout the Awards. The unprecedented response we received on votes this year is indicative of an increasingly excited and engaged festival-going public, a testament to the year-round dedication of all those nominated. To all of the festivals who made it to the shortlists: congratulations and good luck, it’s well deserved. Commiserations to those who didn’t make it to the final stage this year; we hope that it doesn’t deter you from entering next year. Finally, we would like to extend a massive thanks to all who have been involved with the Awards, not just this year, but also for the six preceding it. We are honoured to be able to host these events for you all and are truly grateful for the opportunity. Thank you, The European Festival Awards Team Christof Huber Michael Baker Steve Jenner

THE AWARDS Best New Festival In what many would argue is an already over-saturated market, these debutantes managed to navigate the battle royale of the festival circuit and hold their own against established titans. Bringing a fresh take, new music and alternative audiences to the festival scene, which one have you already put in your diary for next time?

FINALISTS Amsterdam Woods (Netherlands) Creamfields Ibiza (Spain) I Love Techno Europe (France) Krakow Live Festival (Poland) Lollapalooza Berlin (Germany) Parookaville (Germany) Untold Festival (Romania)

Sold either on a show-by-show basis, or via an all encompassing wristband, they give people chance to see multiple acts in the comfort of the indoors. Which one had you ditching green fields for the concrete jungle?

The Green Operations Award, presented by Yourope and the GO Group, recognises festivals that have made a significant contribution to developing more sustainable events. The award is judged and awarded by a panel made up of experts not directly linked to any specific festival, with the exception that the previous year’s winner will be invited to cast a vote for the following year’s award only.

THE AWARDS Festival Anthem Of The Year The ultimate test of any song is how it’s received live – and there’s no better place to gauge this than at festivals. While thousands of great records were lapped up by millions over the summer, few stood out as true populist classics that created defining festival moments. Which one epitomised the spirit of summer 2014?

Playing in front of thousands of people as they travel from one festival to another, they probably see more than most do during the summer. But which one do they collectively enjoy the most? The winner of this Award has been decided by a panel of top booking agents from across Europe.

THE AWARDS YES Group Health & Safety Innovation Award Many festivals have, or are developing, innovative ways to enhance health & safety within their crowded spaces. Some go to great efforts to deliver new and exciting products and services, which keep the audience ever safer and reduce the risks endemic to the event environment. These innovations can inform and positively change public behaviour and also create a safety culture throughout the industry. This new award recognises the innovation that made the greatest positive difference of them all. A panel of independent experts picked out the five innovations most worthy of the award.

THE AWARDS Best Medium-Sized Festival IN ASSOCIATION WITH

With a tendency to shy away from big names and shift the focus towards specific genres and unique nonmusical experiences, the rising popularity of these events demonstrates that unpredictability and character pay off. Some will continue to expand and join the ranks of the majors, whilst others will probably settle happily into their niche and stay there.

THE AWARDS Best Line Up IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Despite how many quirky art installations and pun-based concession stands your festival has, it will always be the lineup that shifts the most tickets. THE AWARDS Best Headliner IN ASSOCIATION WITH

A killer headline performance can be talked about for years to come, etched into musical history as one of those “I was there moments. To succeed requires energy, musicianship, dedication, creativity and a fortuitous coming together of time and space. Some acts may be regulars on the festival circuit, but which one really nailed it this year?

Like temporary cities, the largest festivals are a regular pilgrimage and a rite of passage for many. But which one will prove to be of the highest quality?

THE AWARDS Excellence and Passion Award Launched in 2014, this award is dedicated to an individual whose exceptional passion and dedication has created a truly unique and magical entity in the marketplace.

THE AWARDS Yourope Lifetime Achievement Award IN ASSOCIATION WITH

This award is presented to an individual whose personal vision and energy has propelled the entire festival industry forward in a dynamic, creative way and in doing so created a lasting positive legacy.

THIS YEAR’S WINNER

Jean-Louis Brossard & Béatrice Macé

This year, the European Festival Awards will see one of France’s most distinguished event organising duos receive the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, presented by Yourope. Jean-Louis Brossard and Béatrice Macé have been the driving forces behind Les Rencontres Trans Musicales de Rennes throughout its rich 36 year history – a festival that set out to support local performing artists in its hometown of Rennes in France and ended up enriching the musical landscape of the entire country, attracting such artists as Lenny Kravitz, Portishead, Major Lazer, LCD Soundsystem, Metronomy, Ben Harper, Björk, Daft Punk, 2manydjs, Stromae, Jungle, Kate Tempest to make their first appearances in France. Today Les Trans shines as one of Europe’s most important and vibrant international showcase festivals. The dust is still settling on this year’s edition, which took place across two weeks in Brittany, and from December 2 – 6 in Rennes, with over 60,000 people watching over 130 performances by artists from more than 20 countries. As well as running the annual festival, the Association Trans Musicales, led by Jean-Louis and Béatrice, also manages the Ubu venue, a leading proponent in Rennes’ music scene which helps to develop original new talent and celebrates cultural diversity. Steve Jenner, Festival Awards Director and CoFounder commented: “New talent is the lifeblood of the live music industry. Through Les Trans Musicales, Jean-Louis and Béatrice have 37 years of their lives promoting it and Europe’s musical landscape is all the richer as a result. We are extremely proud to put a spotlight of recognition on this pair of heroes to the live music industry. This award is overdue.” Jean-Louis Brossard said: “When Les Trans were born in 1979, we couldn’t imagine dedicating our entire lives and careers to the festival. Thirty seven years later, that’s what we actually did. We would like to thank the jury for this remarkable recognition. It is an honour to us as well as Les Trans and we will share this fruitful pleasure of a well-achieved job with the whole team.” Béatrice Macé added: “When we got the email announcing that we would receive the Yourope Lifetime Achievement Award, we were really surprised and it left us speechless for a while. We didn’t ask for it. This is why it has a special value and it means a lot to us!”
