With Spirit of Adventure handed over to Saga by shipbuilder Meyer Werft, SMC Art has revealed details of the specially curated art collection set to adorn the public spaces and staterooms.

The vessel, scheduled to take its maiden voyage in 2021, is the second purpose-built boutique cruise ship to join the fleet following the launch of Spirit of Discovery in 2019.

“Over the past 18 months, we have been focused on creating a British boutique cruising experience for our guests that is not available elsewhere on the market and Spirit of Adventure is an important milestone in this plan,” explains Nigel Blanks, Managing Director of Saga Cruises. “While she shares some similarities with her sister ship, Spirit of Adventure is unique in her own right with distinct design features and characteristics.”

Though there are a number of new facilities on board, much of that uniqueness comes from the art. “The Spirit of Adventure artwork collection showcases British and UK-based talent in a continuation of Spirit of Discovery,” SMC explain. “Recently there has been a greater focus on and appreciation for craftmanship and the maker, so this time, the artwork delves deeper into craft techniques, executed in a thoroughly modern way. Craft is an extremely important part of Britain’s heritage and design, and passengers will find reference to this in a contemporary and playful way.”

The collection was curated by SMC’s Jennie Drummond and Emmie Ratter, and features oil paintings, hand-cast bronze sculptures, digital illustrations and multimedia pieces – each selected for a specific location on the ship.

“Conversation will flow as viewers discover unexpected details on hearing the stories behind the artwork,” SMC concludes. “The overall feel is of quality design and production, with traditional methods being interpreted in a contemporary, playful way.”
