Havila Voyages has announced details of a new fleet of environmentally friendly ships to sail the Norwegian coast from Spring 2021.

The family-owned company, a subsidiary of Havila Holdings, has ordered four newbuild vessels to cruise the coastal route from Bergen to Kirkenes; Havila Castor and Havila Capella will operate from 2021, with Havila Polaris and Havila Pollux following in 2022.

Each of the new ships will be fitted with the world’s largest battery packs, meaning they can sail through the fjords for up to four hours, quietly and emission free. The batteries will then be charged in ports along the route using clean hydropower. A combination of factors, including a specially-designed hull and energy management system mean that CO2 emissions will be cut by around 25% and NOx by 80-90%.

Inside, the vessels will showcase contemporary Nordic design across 179 cabins, with Norwegian Marine Interior and Steen Friis Design opting for furniture and fittings that are both sustainable and locally produced. The observation lounge features a glass roof and reclining chairs – ideal for viewing the Northern Lights – while other on-board facilities include two restaurants, a café, fitness room and sauna, as well as a large deck to take in the fjords.

“The voyage along the Norwegian coast is iconic, and a journey we wish to preserve for future generations. We therefore felt it was only right to utilise the latest technology and make environmentally based decisions when ordering ships that will sail through these pristine waters,” comments Matthew Valentine, UK Country Manager, Havila Voyages. “Our guests will be able to immerse themselves in this magical experience, staying in spacious cabins, enjoying gourmet cuisine and participating in a whole host of local excursions – all while sailing on the most environmentally ships running along the Norwegian coast.”
