Infinite Possibilities SB Architects looks to bring the American West’s defunct passenger rail lines back to life with its new Infinite Explorer concept. Across America, railways once teeming with life now lay somewhat dormant following the evolution of air travel, providing little footing for hospitality development despite spanning untapped locations. Looking to transform the existing infrastructure of these underutilised spaces, SB Architects has unveiled the Infinite Explorer concept – which aims to revive the American West’s defunct rail lines. Elevating the guest experience through its innovative design, the Infinite Explorer train features cabins that open at a variety of stops, with light on the land outdoor infrastructure allowing passengers to step from their rooms and enjoy the region’s natural scenery along with adventure, wellness and dining activities. The five-night odyssey provides luxury service and amenities through an elegant dining and observation car, while its exclusive itinerary is geared towards the more intrepid traveller. “Each stop along the route is uniquely designed with an immersive activity programme to astound, delight and capture the guest’s imagination at every turn with outdoor adventures, wellness opportunities and dining experiences,” explains Scott Lee, President and Principal at SB Architects. “The Infinite Explorer is a truly one-of-a-kind hospitality experience offering infinite possibilities that may otherwise be unattainable to the adventure-seeking tourist.” The concept was honoured at the 2019 Radical Innovation Awards, which took place at the New Museum in New York City on 16 October. Through its annual competition, Radical Innovation – founded by The John Hardy Group – calls upon disruptors from around the world to propel the industry forward with imaginative concepts designed to deliver unparalleled guest experiences.

Aman takes to the skies High-flying fans of Aman will be pleased to learn that the Singaporebased hotel group will soon translate its offer to the skies with the Aman Private Jet. An airborne extension of the group’s land-based hospitality philosophies, the craft is available for charter between multiple Aman properties as part of bespoke itineraries. Set within a specially designed version of the luxurious Bombardier Global 5000 – a 12-seat craft with a top speed of 574mph and a range of 9,630km – passengers will have access to their own Aman Jet Concierge, a choice of inflight meals, an intimate Aman tea ceremony in the clouds and a range of Aman Skincare products. To celebrate the launch, the brand has revealed four packages taking in Aman hotels in Bali, China, Indonesia and Thailand, as well as excursions to explore the historic city of Luang Prabang, Cambodia’s temples of Angkor and Vietnam’s coastal Nui Chua National Park. Tours including Bali & Beyond, The Secrets of China, Indochina Past & Present, and From the Himalayas to the Sea will incorporate stays at Amandari, Amankila, Amanjiwo, Amanjiwo and Amanyangyun, giving guests the full spectrum of Aman experiences, from private jet to tented camp to wellness retreat.

Velaa Private Island welcomes new luxury yacht There’s no better way to explore the waters of the Indian Ocean than by yacht, so it should come as no surprise that Velaa Private Island, a luxury resort nestled within the Noonu Atoll of the Maldives, has launched one of the fastest vessels of its kind in the region – Yacht Rania. Named after its British maker, with Rania translating to ‘princess’ in local Divehi language, the 60ft cruiser has been designed with speed, space and style in mind. Its two engines mean it can travel at speeds of up to 34 knots – rivalling the energy and power of a speedboat – while a stylish master cabin, stateroom and convertible twin room allow the vessel to host up to 10 guests, with a front sun deck complete with retractable roof and a rear outdoor level providing ample opportunity to top take in the ocean views. For the more energetic, the yacht’s hydraulic platform has space for a jet ski, while a separate tender – a Williams Jet 325 – can tow guests along the water in an inflatable fun tube, transport divers out to a reef or even allow the adventurous to step straight onto a deserted island.

Ponant Explorers PONANT French cruise operator Ponant taps long-time collaborator Jean-Philippe Nuel for the design of its new Explorer series of ships. Words: Lauren Ho • Photography: © Nicolas Matheus (unless stated)

H

Art Deco Piscine Molitor. Over his 20-year career he has amassed a gold-list of global clients, which, along with some smaller boutique properties, includes many of the industry’s big players from Accor and Hilton to Radisson, Marriott and Meliá. And then there is his decade-long relationship with French cruise operator, Ponant. So when, four years ago, Ponant’s new owners (Artémis, the company from French billionaire François Pinault) announced an expansion of the brand with the launch of the six-ship Ponant Explorer series, tapping Jean-Philippe Nuel for the design was a no-brainer. “Over the years, I have translated my own identity through the ships,” says Nuel. “I have a close relationship and a lot of trust with Véronique [Albertini-Saadé who has been with the company since 2004 and is the current Deputy CEO]. And now, with the Pinault family, I have very easy access to talk to them directly and make decisions together.”

hen Francesco Galli Zugaro, founder and CEO of Aqua Expeditions, spoke to Starboard ahead of its inaugural publication back in the Spring of 2018,

he outlined ambitious plans for expansion, revealing that much of his time is spent scouting new locations as well as searching for boutique vessels that align with the brand’s tailor-made ethos. At the time, the luxury cruise line operated two vessels; Aria Amazon, which takes in sights along the Peruvian Amazon, and Aqua Mekong, sailing on Vietnam and Cambodia’s transboundary river. Having taken trips to assess waterways across Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, Galli Zugaro was confident he could enter new markets and build on an already loyal client base. Now, 18 months on, the first phase of his expansion plan is coming to fruition, with Aqua Blu taking its maiden voyage in Indonesia. “We are excited to launch a new addition to our fleet and enter three new destinations, a project that has been three years in the planning,” explains Galli Zugaro. “Aqua Blu – Aqua Expeditions’ first coastal vessel – is a distinctive explorer yacht with naval pedigree, and will explore Komodo National Park, Spice Islands and Raja Ampat on 7- and 12-night itineraries.” Having fallen in love with small-ship cruising while working in the Galapagos, Galli Zugaro is a hands-on CEO, ensuring every element of the vessel and its itinerary meets

Beyond the Buffet Line Food and beverage is the hot topic amongst cruise ships across the industry, with operators tapping celebrity chefs bring their culinary adventures to life. Words: Ayesha Khan

F

or many, the concept of dining on a cruise ship invokes images of the classic lido deck, where passengers clad in flip-flops and shorts queue up at buffet lines brimming with a nondescript hodgepodge of seafood and low-brow burgers and fries. Thankfully, the world’s leading cruise lines are working tirelessly to debunk the myth of dining on a ship. Today, a

galaxy of Michelin-starred chefs, ranging from Daniel Boulud to Ramon Frexia, are taking a genuine interest in cruise lines, just as they did in hotels in decades past, realising that guests cruise because they appreciate good food and destination-driven culinary enrichment. “I had been a long-time cruiser and always viewed great food as central to the experience, but it was something that had started to lack among cruise lines,” says celebrated chef Jacques Pépin, who serves as Executive Culinary Director for Oceania Cruises, explaining the impetus behind his own involvement in the industry’s culinary revolution. The result of this culinary awareness is not only an honour roll of chefs, representing cuisines from Asian-Hawaiian to entirely plantbased, it is also a change in the kind of shore excursions brands are offering. “Every guest demographic shares a love of food,” says Barbara Muckermann, Chief Marketing Officer of Silversea, speaking about the brand’s new immersive culinary programme, S.A.L.T. “But what they really love about food is that it is the key to get to know a culture. S.A.L.T. is not intended to make our ships like hotels, it is designed to form meaningful connections between travellers and destinations, through culinary discovery.” With every cruise line approaching culinary from a different vantage point, a well-rounded, burgeoning new dining culture is making sailing the high seas all the more exciting. Always ahead of the culinary curve, Oceania prided itself on offering ‘The Finest Cuisine at Sea’ long before other cruise lines were scouring

the pages of the Michelin Guide in search of chefs to partner with. As far as partnerships are concerned, Oceania chose Jacques Pépin to be its Executive Culinary Director. Rather than simply lending his name to the brand, Pépin has been intimately involved for the past 17 years. Speaking to what attracted him to the line, Pépin notes: “They hire great talent, they invest a great deal in the best equipment, and they source perishable ingredients every few days; nothing is pre-prepared or frozen. Overall, their investment in the culinary experience is greater than any other cruise brand. This approach allows them to operate the ships like great

Kitchen will offer menus that completely change as the ship glides into each new port. After hours will be spent in the S.A.L.T. Bar learning the tricks of mixology. For Celebrity Cruises, a partnership with New York-based superstar chef Daniel Boulud was logical. The brand’s Associate Vice President of F&B Operations, Cornelius Gallagher is a former chef at the storied Daniel, Boulud’s flagship restaurant. “I remember when I was at culinary school, watching Boulud cook, and saying one day I’m going to cook for that chef. Designing With Brand As competition hots up, SMC Design identifies three key drivers for owners and operators that define why brand is paramount to a successful product and why design sits at the heart of it all.

The modern traveller is no longer looking for just a cruise, rather a journey that inspires a connection with a brand and an experience that resonates with them on a personal level. Emotion: As passengers’ priorities continue to evolve, it’s more important than ever for brands to connect with audiences on a deeper, more personal level. Do the environments appeal to their sensibilities, and are we as designers supporting the lifestyle preferences and aspirations of the guests? When creating new experiences, we are responsible for discerning the appetites of the market, with a genuine understanding of what it is that the passenger is looking for and delivering something that both challenges them and offers the unexpected. Value: Brands are valuable, they are psychology and science brought together as a promise of quality. While products have life cycles that soon expire, brands offer permanence and convey integrity, experience and character. We must look at all the facets of what makes a brand from the basis of design

– from interiors to the story behind the art, intelligent planning to the dressing of a space, and from the graphics of an environment to the experience on offer. Working with owners, we create coherent, meaningful identities and experiences through design, which define and perpetuate all that the brand stands for. Competition: Operators and brands looking to earn passenger loyalty must have a message different to others that is true to their core ideals, and this in turn must appeal to the market. Through the creation of key design pillars that flow throughout a ship, an identity will emerge that will captivate such appeal. We are not only creating environments but aesthetics that passengers will relate to and associate with the brand. Whether this be the grounding of key material statements, the narrative in the artworks or the characterising forms in vessel architecture – we build identities that sing the story of the brand. www.smc-design.com

Q&A

Tal Danai Artlink Starboard caught up with Tal Danai, founder and CEO of Artlink, to discuss the opportunities, challenges and future of art curation on cruise ships. What marine projects are you working on at the moment? We are currently finishing Costa Smeralda, an exciting new ship under the design directorship of Adam Tihany, whose concept the ‘Best of Italy’ has been carried out by four acclaimed design practices: Jeffrey Beers International, Rockwell Group, Partner Ship Design and Dordoni. How does selecting art for land-based hotels differ from selecting it for cruise ships? When we curate for a hotel, especially in urban locations, we assume that the attention a guest will give to the art will be very short, and we therefore have to deliver strong one-liners. On a ship however, passengers are on board for a minimum of a few days, so the attention paid to art is potentially much longer. As a result, we curate to a different pace of view, creating layers of interest and inspiration, and delivering impacts that linger rather than present themselves.

Zieher Star The Star decanter by Zieher features a unique central element, which allows oxygen to be mildly folded and integrated into the wine when slewed, animating the serve and allowing it to develop its own flavours beyond just the surface. The carafe features a recessed grip at the bottom to improve the swirl during filling and slewing, while also guaranteeing safe handling and creating a firm stand from which to serve. Furthermore, a black silicone collar enclosed in the box offers an attractive base and allows for the inclined positioning of the decanter. www.zieher.com

What are the challenges of selecting art for a cruise ship? There are many challenges; the first is to best understand the brand and its guests. This may sound simple, as all brands provide well-crafted identity materials and statistics about their guests. However, to excel, we should try to converse with the brand and dig out what is not necessarily told but may translate well through the powerful tools of art. We should look beyond the guest statistics and obvious readings, and use our knowledge and experience to deliver beyond expectations. Ships are also built in classes, which means that they are often identical with only minor changes to the interiors. The role of art therefore gains more importance, as does our ability to make a difference in the character, look and feel, and identity of the ship. Our work in the marine sector is complex and challenging, but the satisfaction from each such successful project is rewarding. Where do you see art on cruise ships headed in the future? As ship design becomes more sophisticated, diverse and sensitive to the shades of guest expectations, the scope of our work will expand. We see more openness and interest on behalf of brands to accommodate meaningful art, to go beyond the obvious assignment of decorating and enhancing interior design by providing inspirational and multi-layered artwork that complements the brand identity. www.artlink.com

Ulster Queen Elizabeth

Lasvit The Royal Princess

Ulster has demonstrated its reputation in marine projects once again with its contribution of bespoke carpets to the iconic Queen Elizabeth cruise ship. Having previously worked on Queen Mary 2 in 2016, and Queen Victoria in 2017, the brand’s contribution to this latest vessel marks its participation on all three Queens in the Cunard fleet. Collaborating with Alan McVitty, founder and CEO of M Studio Design, alongside Alison Clixby, Hotel Design Director of Cunard, the Northern Irish firm has created a series of bespoke designs, tailored specifically to blend the ship’s elegant Art Deco heritage with contemporary interior furnishings and colour schemes. Ulster produced 45,000m² of carpet with a variety of customised patterns specifically tailored to match the décor of each specific area, ranging from the grand lobby stairs and landing, through to an extensive range of shops, restaurants, suites, staterooms and cabins. Designs previously used on Queen Mary and Queen Victoria have been referenced in places before being recoloured and modified, while other areas on the vessel have been refreshed with the addition of contemporary, sharply delineated Art Deco geometrics and natural forms. www.ulstercarpets.com

Christened by the Duchess of Cambridge at a ceremony in Southampton, The Royal Princess brings beautiful light to the blue depths of the ocean. Lasvit contributed to the luxurious, royal feel of the ship’s interiors, with designer Petra Šostáková creating installations for the main atrium and stairs, taking inspiration from the teeming life under the water’s surface and arranging marine creatures in seemingly random groupings. On board the vessel, the reflection of the sea surface is seen all around and the optical attributes of hand-blown glass components embody the aquatic elements. This nautical opulence continues into the dining space, with pearl necklacestyle glass installations designed by Lui Kawasmi lining the room. These designs draw upon the magical experience of finding a pearl inside a shell and the elegance of a pearl necklace. Lasvit’s custom-made installations are all crafted from hand-blown glass, paying respect to Czech glassmaking traditions, whilst also incorporating the use of modern technologies and cutting-edge design. www.lasvit.com
