THE TPi AWARDS 2014 Yet again we’re able to reflect on another year of challenging, creative, innovative, boundary-pushing technological productions in the live entertainment sector. 2013 saw some pretty spectacular events in action. Biffy Clyro’s UK & Ireland arena tour ’Opposites’ combined intricate projection design, environmentally conscious set construction and inspiring themes. After a year’s absence Glastonbury returned with its incredible Arcadia Stage, producing a space age dimension to the festival’s atmosphere; Robbie Williams became larger than life on his ‘Take The Crown’ stadium tour; Bon Jovi showed the US and Europe that three decades after their inception, they remain very hands-on with their tours; Festival Number 6 stunned on its second coming in the beautiful and challenging surroundings of North Wales; SXSW in Austin, Texas, captivated an international audience with its round the clock inner city festival; and Beyonce’s ‘The Mrs Carter Show’ broke the record for the most lighting fixtures used on a tour. That’s just a small example of what we’ve loved learning about, and we collectively appreciate the hospitality shown to us by the industry.
With the all-consuming planning and preproduction these kind of events involve, to the exciting live experience felt as the shows get on the road, it then becomes our passion to expose all the hard work from every part of an event and talk to the community and talent that makes it all happen, safely. From all the global production and tour managers, to the engineers, crewmembers, designers, manufacturers, and service companies which made 2013 such an incredible year for both British and international live events, the TPi Awards is proud to have been able to honour some of the late, great and highly influential industry professionals during the ceremony. Although we organise it, this event is yours; it’s a night which belongs to the people who make the touring world truly tick. On behalf of everyone at the TPi Awards 2014 and TPi Magazine, thank you for being part of our industry’s special event and we look forward to seeing you next year, after another 12 months on the road.

THE HOST
HUEY MORGAN After delivering some funny, intelligent and all-round entertaining hosting skills at the TPi Awards 2010, the whole team were delighted to welcome back smooth talking New Yorker, Hugh ‘Huey’ Morgan as the 2014 host of ceremony. Huey is a half Irish, half Peurto Rican New York native, who currently resides in London with his family, and enjoys a successful career in the music industry. As the presenter of his very own awardwinning radio show on BBC Radio 6 Music, ‘The Huey show’, and taking BBC Radio 2’s late night record collection slot, our host clearly thrives
on engaging with an audience which is why so many of you suggested his return. Huey is also a veteran in ‘our world’. In 1993, Huey formed and fronted New York rock / hip hop band, Fun Lovin’ Criminals in which he performed both vocals and guitar duties and blended rock, hip hop, jazz, reggae, and funk influences into his musical endeavours. More recently, Huey recorded his first solo album ‘Say It To My Face’, and as of 2012 became part of the Love Hate Social Club tattoo studio in London, alongside Miami Ink star, Ami James. We hope you enjoyed the show hosted by this true rock ‘n’ roller!

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD
Chris Mounsor Winner:
Chris Mounsor started his music career in the early 80s, providing disco equipment and eventually a ‘proper’ band PA to London’s Electric Ballroom. By the mid / late 80s, his company Encore PA and his friends, Oz PA, were providing audio services to the likes of the Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, The Farm, The La’s, Oasis, Morrissey and a whole raft of other artists in the ‘Madchester’ music scene. Encore’s involvement in the rave / acid house scene even saw Chris make the front page of the News Of The World for two weeks running in 1989. In the early 90s Chris honed his industry sales skills further under the watchful eye of Bryan Grant at Britannia Row. In the mid 90s Chris was poached by Malcolm Mellows to head up PSL’s fledgling music division with the late Des Fallon as assistant.
soon joined Chris and Lee’s new venture. As an innovator Chris brought the ubiquitous PPU to the industry and furthermore, pushed the use of LED products, eventually leading to their popularity on touring riders. Chris always brought a level of respect to touring video and is primarily responsible for its undeniably important presence as seen today. XL Video is now considered a leading, first class operation. It has developed into a world renowned tour supplier, providing ground-breaking creative, technical and innovative services to global artists including U2, Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones and Depeche Mode, to name but a few. On such tours, Chris could always be found in or near the catering!
Touring video had been somewhat chaotic up until then, and Chris brought structure and a degree of professionalism to the new found sector.
His willingness to push the boundaries as well as his humour and determination to deliver the best has endeared him to everyone he dealt with and as you know, Chris truly deserves TPi’s Outstanding Contribution award.
After a successful few years at PSL Chris, along with friend Lee Spencer, set up XL Video UK. Des, Richard Burford, Paul Wood and Malcolm
