Getting the Most out of University/ Graduation Hints & Tips

Getting the Most out of University 1. Ever considered a year abroad or a year in industry as part of your degree? Not only is it a great way to improve your skills and experience but it looks great on a CV too – and you can still receive funding from student finance! 2. Experience of being in a working environment is a key requirement for employers – therefore why not sign up to take part in the Swansea Week of work (WOW) or Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN – both run by the careers office. You may even get the chance to join us in Money@CampusLife! 3. Have you considered a part time job? A few hours a week can really help your budget, looks good on your CV and can be great for meeting new people too. 4. Make sure you get involved with clubs or societies. There really is something for everyone and employers will want to see what extra-curricular activities you have been involved in. 5. Budget your money – It sounds simple but is much harder in practise. The thing is, master it and you will have much more money to put towards the things you enjoy!

Top tips for Graduating Students 1. Thinking of studying a postgraduate course? Do your research on funding. There is funding out there but it is up to you to find and apply for it. Obtaining funding for Postgraduate study is your first research project to complete – and that is before you have even started! 2. Got an interview? Invest in an outfit that not only reflects the formality of the sector you hope to work in but also makes you feel good. 3. “Do your thing. Do it every day. Do it unapologetically. Don’t be discouraged by criticism. You probably already know what they’re going to say. Pay no mind to the fear of failure. It’s far more valuable than success. Take ownership, take chances and have fun. And no matter what, don’t ever stop doing your thing." — Asher Roth 4. Looking for a job? Be pro-active and join recruitment agencies and upload your CV to jobsites. Remember – you may not get your dream job straight away so keep those expectations realistic! 5. Network, network, network! The old saying it’s not

what you know, it’s who know is still true to this day. Take a proactive approach and get to know the right people. Social media sites are also a great way to connect with influential people.
