Executive Profile David Joyner CEO, Hill Physicians Medical Group
DAVID JOYNER KEEPS TRUE TO HIS PHILOSOPHY THAT LIVING
A BALANCED LIFE MEANS FINDING WAYS TO PLAY AS HARD AS YOU WORK. And given the demands of his job as CEO of Hill Physicians
Medical Group, he has found the perfect formula for achieving that healthy balance. “I definitely believe in working hard and playing hard,” he says of the equation. “It’s essential to enjoy yourself too. So I fill my personal time with exercise and outdoor adventure.” His forms of enjoyment are as intense and varied as his work life, with most of them outdoors and taking advantage of his home’s location close to the San Francisco Bay. He cycles, he rows a scull, he sails his racing sailboat, he runs marathons – nine so far. And in winter he skis. Keeping fit makes perfect sense for a person who oversees a major healthcare company whose mission is to keep people healthy. It’s a constant challenge to keep up and stay ahead in a fast changing industry, he says, and the almost daily changes in technology mean his team of 550 employees—two thirds of them at Bishop Ranch— must remain sharply focused. The 4,000-plus physicians in Hill Physicians Medical Group rely on Joyner’s team to manage the infrastructure and business side of the group so the doctors can focus on practicing medicine. The group of independent physicians the company is affiliated with is growing. They recently expanded their reach beyond the Bay Area to Grass
Valley, and are launching a new product with a PPO plan design in Sacramento. Technology is a crucial part of that management role, and the recent rollout of the Epic electronic health record system for use by the physicians, staff and patients means better communication and security for all. Once fully implemented in the group’s doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals, the Epic technology and its MyChart component will allow for some of the latest developments in personal medical care. It’s a powerful technological tool that will maintain all of a patient’s health records, allow the making of appointments and viewing of records online, and – eventually – provide the means for video visits with your physician. Amidst all the changes, though, Joyner says that one thing remains absolute. “What’s not changing is our heritage of caring for the physicians and their patients,” he says, by staying always committed to their mission of providing the highest quality care and keeping it affordable. Joyner and his wife Sydney have two children. Their son is a senior at UCLA, graduating in June with a double major in economics and political science, and their daughter is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI.

Workplace Seminars
B2B Seminar: Discover How Your Stress Personally Affects You When we are stressed, we naturally, subconsciously default to longstanding coping mechanisms that get us through stressful moments and situations. By always resorting to those familiar behaviors that provide us immediate relief, we’re kept from realizing that the behaviors can cause long-term damage to personal and professional relationships, and to our mental and physical health. There are complex connections between stress and personality types. And as with many of the personality tests such as DISK, you can discover how your personality affects how you behave under stress. This seminar is presented by Lori Solay, owner of Solay Creative. Lori is devoted to helping people outsmart the stresses that keep them caught in a cycle of anxiety, self-doubt and feeling overwhelmed. She will help you make better choices and handle stress, and share some tips on how to create more resilience in your life. This powerful change can help create a life that feels deeply meaningful, supported by beliefs of self worth, personal empowerment, and positive action.

Scoop Carpool
Scoop, the easy and flexible carpooling app, has two great ways for you to ease your daily rides by teaming up with other riders, drivers, neighbors and co-workers. For commuters using the Scoop carpool app, BART has started reserving parking spaces in the permit area at the Orinda and Rockridge BART stations. These openings represent an expansion of the Carpool to BART program, which until recently has operated only at Concord, Dublin/Pleasanton, Pleasant Hill, Millbrae, and San Bruno BART stations. The Scoop to BART Carpool program aims to expand BART’s parking capacity, to create an easier parking experience for commuters. Most of the agency’s 48,000 parking spaces fill by 8:00 a.m. each weekday. Ninety-five percent of those spots are taken
Contra Costa residents going to the Orinda station are also eligible for discounts on the Scoop app through a partnership between 511 Contra Costa, Contra Costa Transportation Authority and Scoop. For all Bishop Ranch Scoop carpoolers, Scoop has introduced a completely new scheduling experience for both riders and drivers, called “The Shortlist”. This feature enables riders and drivers to discover carpools beyond the normal Scoop matching period, allowing for additional scheduling opportunities and better fallback options for carpoolers who might not have matched or had a canceled trip. We’ve taken the core foundation of the deadline system, which is still the primary way to get in a Scoop carpool— and added dimensions of flexibility, access, and convenience— something that no carpool app has had before. Give it a try!
by solo drivers, according to a 2016 passenger survey. BART’s new program offers commuters the opportunity to secure a parking space in exchange for a shared trip. To get guaranteed parking at Orinda and Rockridge BART stations, download the app at takescoop.com, use the promo code BARTLOVE05 to receive a $5 credit, type in the BART station name, and schedule a carpool ride either by 9:00 p.m. the night before the morning commute, or by 3:30 p.m. for that evening’s commute. Shortly after the deadline, Scoop notifies commuters who have matched with one of their 65,000+ users. Scoop coordinates with BART to help verify carpoolers and ensure smooth operations every morning.

Hill Physicians Medical Group
Hill Physicians, located at Bishop Ranch 9, is a respected network of physicians who have joined forces and contracted with major insurance companies, hospitals and urgent care centers to provide quality healthcare to their health plan beneficiaries. Its doctors also provide additional services that demonstrate a strong commitment to their mission: To ensure the health and well being of our patients and the communities we serve. As the largest independent physician association in California, HPMG’s nearly 4,000 physicians are able to provide care to Medicare Advantage, Commercial, Medi-Cal, and PPO members across a dozen health plans throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, San Joaquin, Sacramento, and Solano regions. Their dedicated doctors practice at 1,600 offices, and work in 42 hospitals and 52 urgent care centers. Hill Physicians’ doctors typically care for both Hill Physicians patients (for whom Hill Physicians receives professional service revenue and funds payments to participating physicians) and non-Hill Physicians patients, for whom the physician may be receiving fee-for-service, or other types of clinical revenue. PriMed Management Consulting Services, Inc., the management services organization that organized Hill Physicians Medical Group, Inc. in 1984, has played a key role in Hill Physicians’ success. The employees of PriMed support Hill Physicians’ providers by providing technology infrastructure, claims processing, customer service, patient and care management, and authorization reviews that allow physicians to do what they do best – practice medicine.
