Executive Profile Dede Cowan CEO, Ascot Staffing
DEDE COWAN’S BUSINESS MAY INVOLVE THINGS TEMPORARY, BUT THERE’S AN UNMISTAKABLE AURA OF STABILITY AND
PERMANENCE AROUND HER SAN RAMON TEMP AGENCY, ASCOT STAFFING. The company has been around for 46 years, and for 36 of
those it’s been all hers. The company, located at Bishop Ranch 6, provides small to medium size companies with administrative, human resource and accounting candidates for both temporary positions and direct hires. One customer has been using Ascot’s services for 34 years, and many others have relied on the firm for over 20 years. That loyalty suggests she’s doing something right. Dede attributes the firm’s continued success to the small but seasoned crew of four staffing professionals, with their average length of service at 21 years. “The staff is amazing,” she says. “They always strive to really understand a customer’s needs and culture so they can select the appropriate employee for them. Their intensive interviews, resume reviews, and skills assessments of candidates allows them to determine what type of company can lead to the candidate’s success.” She won’t quote numbers, but the company’s rigorous screening process means not every applicant will be accepted for placement. That care in screening might well explain her long relationships with so many companies. Cowan’s energy and enthusiasm for her work carry over into her
fondness for the outdoors and some intense exercise. Five days a week she does a three-mile power walk up some steep hills around Danville, where she lives with her husband Don. And twice a week she plays golf on a local course. The couple, and the company, long ago became loyal supporters of Canine Companions for Independence, a Santa Rosa organization that provides – at no cost to the recipients – a fully trained dog to help people in their daily lives. At the age of eight weeks, each puppy goes to live and train with a volunteer trainer. And at the end of 18 months, the adult dog undergoes six months of intensive training before heading off to meet and live with and assist their carefully matched person. She learned about the organization from a friend some 15 years ago, and since then she and her husband and the staff at Ascot have been faithful supporters and fundraisers for the non-profit group. “I could go on for hours about this incredible group,” she says. “It’s a phenomenal organization, dedicated to providing specially trained dogs to help people with disabilities.” She was originally intrigued by the canine help provided to veterans, and over time discovered what a difference the dogs also make in the lives of children – many of whom have disabilities that require them to use wheelchairs. “It’s amazing to see the difference these dogs make in the lives of the people fortunate enough to have them in their lives,” she says.
