Introduction Visual thinking is a way to organize your thoughts and improve your ability to think and communicate. It’s a great way to convey complex or potentially confusing information. It is to externalize your internal thinking processes, making them more clear, explicit and actionable. Using metaphors to convey is meassge is best to make an impact on your audience. It is a very basic element required for representation of information in Graphic Design,

5

Pun The humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words. Pun is an intelligent way to make your point without using the words literally. It can be use for a word-combination or to depict a situation. Using pun is a humorous approach to attract your audience and make them think about the message in ther visual for a longer time period. Pun is of two types: • Homophonic Pun • Homographic Pun

6

Visual Pun A visual pun is an image that depicts an objects, or an arrangement of objects in such a way that the name of the objects, or their name suggest a play on words. In visual puns, play on words usually hinges on a word with more than one meaning or the substitution of a homonym that changes the meaning of the sentence for humorous or rhetorical effect. When literal meaning of word is used to create visual pun then it is known as WORD COMBINATION PUN, whereas if metaphors are used to create a visual pun then it is called as SITUATIONAL PUN. Word Combination Pun This type of pun uses words that are spelled the same but sound different. These puns are often written rather than spoken, as they briefly trick the reader into reading the “wrong sound. E.g.: Butterfly= Butter+ Fly

7

Situational Pun Situational Pun is to represent any situation in a very funny and humorous way without pointing to the original and exact situation by using visual metaphor elements. It can be used to represent a serious issue with not so serious elements to make it more interesting and eye catching.

8

Assignment 1 In this first assignment we need to make puns and then visualize it. • Word Combination Pun • Situational Pun

9

For word combination pun, I took Peer Pressure and then replace PEER with PEAR the fruit.

For Situational Pun I took SEAT BELT for safety while driving. In this pun, I replace the safety of seat belt by the literal use of belt while wearing loose pants to give a simple message that WEAR BELT FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.

Your BELT Your SAFETY

Infographics Information graphics or infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly. They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. Nowadays, infographics are used by all levels of management for high-level views of data. Infographics include bar graphs, pie charts, histograms, line charts, tree diagrams, mind maps, Gantt charts, and network diagrams It is to externalize your internal thinking processes, making them more clear, explicit and actionable.

14

Assignment 2 In this assignment we need to make an infographics on the chosen subject and in it compare information on the same scale with different elements.. The basic idea is to show the information in very simplified manner so that it is easy to read the whole information for reader and compare the statistics.

15

Information for Infographics: For this infographics, I have compared different varities of tea on various parameters as: Caffeine Level Temperature Required for boiling Time duration for boiling Antioxidant Level in BLACK, GREEN, WHITE, OOLONG AND ROOIBOS TEA. • As benefits are not common in each variety so I made a flow chart to show the common benefits by two or more varieties of tea. • I have shown some common and interesting facts in this infographics to make it more interesting and informative.

Visual Metaphors Visual Metaphors are the major and basic part of visual thinking. Metaphors are used to represent something in a very indirect way to visualize any subject. Metaphors are nothing but objects which are not literallyrelated to the given situation or subject but giving the same feeling if used in a certain context. Visual metaphors are used to make the subject much more impactful and humorous.

20

Selection of topic and concept: After thinking about the lot of options like: Cancer, Sexually abused boys, Internet false dating, Anorexia, etc. SCHIZOPHRENIA is one which is challenging and need a clarification in itself. It is a long term mental disorder involving a breakdown between thought, emotion, & behaviour leading to faulty perception. It is of different types and its symptoms are: Hallucinations, Delusions, Reduction in focus, Movement disorder, Difficulty in expressing in social situations, etc. Mostly people confuse it with dual personality and think patient of it are dangerous. They are not dangerous and it is not caused by childhood experiences or poor parenting, it is genetic disorder and can be treated. Schizophrenic people are not able to distinguish between reality and imagination.

21

Assignment 3 In this assignment of visual metaphors we need to select a social cause and make a campaign for it which includes: A verbal poster A non-verbal poster A 3-D installation or a non 2-D design.

22

Verbal poster In this assignment I made verbal poster on schizophrenia by taking the strong symptom of it that people having schizophrenia are not able to distinguish between the real and imaginary things. I made an awareness campaign for schizophrenia to make people aware of it and do not take it as a dangerous mental disorder. The whole concept is to make people think like the one who is having schizophrenia, so that they are able to understand their confussion and choose the right way of treating them.

23

In the final poster their is a illustration by typography to show the confussion between words and unconsciously they pick the work what they think about these people. It is having a clear message that treat them well they are not mad, they are sick. This is how they see. Which one are you?

Non-Verbal poster Explorations: In this part of assignment, I made an interactive poster which depicts the feel of schizophrenia. The basic idea is to show the strong imagination of schizophrenic people by the flies around a very simple but abstarct to the context of flies shape HEART. This makes the audience to think why heart and flies are together. Here, flies are big in size and surrounds heart which is totally unreaslistic and that depicts the irrelevent imagination of schizophrenic people. The color of background is very lively which shows the happiness of people in their worlds. The concept is to show that the patient made an imaginery layer which fades the real emotion in mind and we can see the true and simple feelings only after removing this imaginery layer.

Installation Explorations: In this part of assignment we need to give a solution other then poster to convey the same message or information on the choosen subject. As I have selected Awareness of Schizophrenia as my topic, I want to make the installation in such a way so people who are not having any idea regarding this disorder, they go and search about it. I want to give them a clear idea that Schizophrenic people are not depressed or mentally challenged people they are just having very strong imagination and thats why they are not able to distinguish between the real and imaginery things. For this reason, I have made a motion graphics on Schizophrenia depicting the true feeling of this disease by creating the same type of imagination in front of normal people then put a simple question in front of them, “HOW YOU WANT TO SEE THEM?

29

For this Installation I have made a zoom-in and zoom-out motion graphics in which I have shown human eyes in normal condition and then showing two different patterns as two different worlds or two different ways of viewing world through the iris. I showed that these eyes are similar from outside but its your choice how you saw the world.

30

In these eyes two different patterns are shown: First in which colors and all the beautiful and symmetric elements are there which make it lively, energetic and gives a beautiful view to see the world and treat every thing nicely. It simply gives a balance feeling which makes you happy. In second pattern which is gloomy and unsymmetric and gives you the feeling of disgust in itself. It is giving a very unpleasent and disturbing feeling. Everything is in our eyes we need to choose what we want to see and how we are going to take everything around us.

31

Thank You.
