Pyrite: the name pyrite is of Greek origin. Derived from pyrites lithos, “stone or material which strikes fire”, has been around for hundreds of years. It naturally occurs in cubes, pyritohedrons, and octahedrons which frequently form in “penetration twinning”.

For hundreds of years, the spark from pyrite striking steel has been used to progress civilizations. From burial mounds to produce fire to wheel-lock guns, creativity and technology have gone together with pyrite. At this advanced S.T.E.A.M. school, students are provided a one-of-a-kind education experience that is unrivaled.

With pyrite being easily found in Ohio’s creeks, this design takes direct inspiration from the minerals on site. This design was crystallized by having cubes and rectangles repeatedly permeate each other. With a sixty-degree tilt, this structure maximizes ventilation from the prevailing south-west wind. This rotation in inspired by the Oak House High School in Barcelona by Trasbordo Architecture. As seen in the parking layout, the only access to the parking lot is by driving though the center of the building which is directly in view of the administration.

There have been too many tragedies in recent time leading to security being a major concern in school design. Starting from the entrance, Pyrite aims to tackle this unique challenge with multiple solutions. With the two-lane road being the only entrance onto the property, drivers MUST pass both administration offices to park. After parking, both entrances are in full view of staff and students with no blind spots. If a perpetrator were to enter the building, hallways can be locked down at multiple choke points on all floors. With the added reinforced glass, students and staff can learn in a safe environment.
