Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 160 This camp is designed to teach students more about the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Campers will use the LEGO Minstorms EV3 to design, build and program autonomous robots. Monday through Thursday, campers will work to solve challenges from the 2014 FIRST LEGO League game, World Class. On Friday, campers will take a field trip to a local business to learn about careers in STEM and the practical applications of robotics in industry. The cost of camp includes a T-shirt and lunch on Friday only.

This camp is designed to take experienced robotics students to the next level. Campers will use the LEGO Minstorms EV3 to learn advanced mechanical design and programming skills. They will also have the opportunity to implement LEGO pneumatics on their robots. It is preferred that students attending this camp have previous FIRST LEGO League or robotics camp experience. On Friday, campers will take a field trip to a local business to learn about careers in STEM and the practical applications of robotics in industry. The cost includes a T-shirt and lunch on Friday only.

This project-based camp is designed to get students engaged in science. Campers will examine how the power of wind can be used to charge their MP3 player. You will design, build and test model wind turbine blades and will also use sensors to measure and record wind speeds. Lunch is not included in the cost of the camp.

Let’s build something! This camp integrates safety instruction, building design, a hands-on project and an introduction to all aspects of the trades. Campers are provided with safety equipment and tools as part of an overview to the industry’s most highly skilled craft workers. Note: To ensure safety, campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. NO SHORTS. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.

Meets in the Career Technology Center, Room T 180 An auto service summer camp is heading to MCCC! The camp will cover a range of topics, including shop safety, the installation of automobile accessories such as windshield wipers, tires and rims, and career opportunities in the field. We will also discuss and perform simple repairs, problem analysis and parts replacement. Car Camp moves into high gear this summer at MCCC! Note: To ensure safety, campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. NO SHORTS. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.

Construction camp is a collaboration with the following companies: Detroit Carpentry Apprenticeship School; Laibe Electric; IBEW Local 8; U.A. Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 671; Monroe United Way; Nate Nestor, Monroe High School construction teacher, and the Home Builders Association of Monroe County.

You will learn about 2D drawing, using the DraftSight software as well as create 3D drawings and animations using SolidWorks. In addition, you will get to see how 3D printers create models.

You will learn the basics of welding technology with an emphasis on shielded metal arc (stick) welding and gas metal arc (MIG) wire welding on low carbon steel. You will gain hands-on experience with welding equipment, including the opportunity to complete a welding art project that you will take home. Previous welding experience is not necessary! Note: To ensure safety, campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. NO SHORTS and no nylon of any sort. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.


Aspiring Artist Camp

Meets in the La-Z-Boy Center, Room Z 275 Designed to bring the budding artist out of you! Taught by Steve Ryder, professional artist, you’ll learn some basic drawing and art skills such as shading, color and perspectives, as well as some basic painting skills. Creativity is encouraged in this camp, as you’ll be painting a group picture and creating your own freeform images. We’ll end this camp with an art gallery show to display your works of art for your family and friends. Note: Campers should wear comfortable play clothes that can get messy and are easily cleaned.

Lights, camera, action! Steve Ryder, an actor and magician with over 5,000 performances to his credit, will direct this twoweek camp designed to teach the fundamentals of the entire theatrical process. Topics will include auditioning, rehearsal, basic make-up and costuming, basic lighting and set creating. Camp concludes with a short original performance for family and friends. True to real theater, not all kids will have the exact number of lines. However, all campers will have a choice to take a role they’re comfortable with and will be involved in the final production, either on stage or behind the scenes.

Calling all junior chefs! Join us for this camp designed to take your cooking skills to the next level! Campers will learn all the basic cooking methods while preparing a different meal daily. Just to keep things tidy, you’ll review kitchen safety and sanitation skills. Note: Campers must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-toe shoes. Due to safety concerns, campers who are not dressed appropriately will not be permitted to participate in camp activities that day and/or will be sent home.

Meets in the La-Z-Boy Center, Room 271 For the aspiring rock and roller! If you ever wanted to learn how to play a guitar, here is your chance! Campers will learn the names of the strings and how to tune a guitar. In addition, you’ll learn basic major and minor chords and basic chord progressions that will enable you to play hundreds of songs. Depending on skill level, campers could learn songs each day while others may need some additional practice at home. Note: Campers must provide their own electric or acoustic guitar and bring it each day to camp.

Photography Camp

For boys and girls grades 8 – 12 PHOTO 720-81: Mon – Thurs, June 29 – July 2 9 a.m. – Noon Meets in the La-Z-Boy Center, Room 258 Explore the world through a camera lens! Local fine art photographer Kevin Trickey will teach you the different parts of the camera, how to work them, and the basics of ISO, exposure, composition and flash. This camp is designed for all skill levels, including those who want to experiment with advanced photography. You will spend a small amount of time in the computer lab doing some cool stuff to your photos using Photoshop. Note: Campers will likely be going outside to shoot pictures; please wear or bring appropriate clothing for the weather. Don’t forget to bring your camera.

Meets in the Health Education Building, Room H 165 Terri Langton, MS, a local health educator, will lead this exciting and educational camp! Campers will have an opportunity to dissect heart, lungs, stomach, eyes and chicken legs. Each day will also feature related topics and creative activities to accompany the organ system such as CPR, nutrition and health occupations. Gloves, dissection supplies and materials will be provided. Note: It is recommended that campers wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the hands-on dissection and other physical activities.

Meets in the Health Education Building, Room H 131 Join seasoned camp trainer Gary Davis for a fun camp of intense volleyball training. He brings 19 years of experience in directing camps and clinics in the surrounding area. Players will learn techniques in serving, underhand passing and attacking. This camp emphasizes concepts intended to help players succeed both on and off the court. Note: Campers should wear appropriate clothing (including knee pads) and bring their own bottled water or container to fill using the drinking fountain.

Campers will receive instruction in shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding, defense, offensive concepts, leadership and teamwork. Campers will also participate in individual contests. This camp emphasizes concepts to make each athlete a better player and person. Note: Campers should wear appropriate clothing and bring their own bottled water or container to fill using the drinking fountain.

Firearm Safety Camp

Meets in the La-Z-Boy Center, Room Z 259 Note: meets at a local firing range on the last day of camp. Transportation is not provided by MCCC. We aim to take the mystery out of guns at an early age and provide skills that will stay with you for a lifetime. While you will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, rifle parts and operation, shooting fundamentals and range rules, the emphasis will always be on safety! Cost includes use of rifle, ear/eye protection and ammunition at the firing range. This class is taught by Wayne Blank, an NRA-certified instructor. Note: Campers must attend all four classroom sessions to be eligible to participate at the firing range and earn your certificate.


2015 FUNdamentals Summer Camps: Some housekeeping and safety guidelines to ensure that everyone’s camp experience at MCCC is a great one! Before Camp • Each camper must have a signed Release of Liability Waiver on file with the Office prior to the first day of camp. • It is recommended that you register your child for the grade level they will enter in the fall. Drop Off • Be sure you have designated on the emergency form who will be dropping off/picking up your child from camp each day. • Do you not drop your child off any earlier than 10 minutes prior to the start of camp! • Upon arrival on the first day of camp, stop at the check-in table to confirm your child’s registgration and liability form is on file. • You must walk your child to and from the classroom each day of camp. Do not drop your child off in the parking lot! Pick Up • Arrive promptly at the classroom to pick up your child each day of camp. If a parent is consistently late, we reserve the right to prohibit your child from continuing with the camp. • Do not wait in the parking lot and ask your child to walk out unescorted. During Camp Sessions • Appropriate behavior is expected. Students will be prohibited from continuing with camp for misbehavior. • Many camps require campers to wear appropriate clothing and/or bring items from home. Please note camp requirements stated at the end of each camp description. • MCCC staff does not dispense medication. • Have fun! Supervised Lunch Hour All campers may participate in our daily supervised lunch hour from 12-1:00 p.m. Lunch tickets (for pre-made lunch boxes) are made available for you to purchase or your child may bring his/her own lunch. Please plan ahead as purchasing a lunch the day of will not be an option. Appropriate behavior is expected and students will be prohibited from leaving the designated lunch area until it is time to move on to the next camp location and/or a parent/guardian arrives to pick him/her up.
