ALL TOGETHER BETTER WELCOME TO THE MONROE COUNTY YMCA! Many people think of the YMCA as a gym, a child care center, a camp, or a place to watch the kids play sports. The Y is all of these and a lot more. We strive to empower people and communities to learn about healthy living, to grow and thrive, and give back to our friends and neighbors. We all have the potential to improve the nation’s health and wellbeing both physically and mentally. We set values for children that can last a lifetime, and we assist adults who need our guidance. We help the physically challenged, and we open our doors to those in need. Together, we are a better us.

Y FOR ALL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE What is Y Financial Assistance? Each year, hundreds of local children, adults, and families who may not otherwise be able to afford membership or program fees are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive at the Y, thanks to our financial assistance program. How it works... All you need to do is apply! There are two separate financial assistance application processes for the 2018 calendar year – one for memberships in November, and one for summer camps in April. Prospective applicants should visit monroecountyymca.org/ financial-assistance for more information regarding the financial assistance application process, including forms and requirements. How it’s supported... Because of the generosity from our donors and advocates, we are able to ensure the Y remains accessible for everyone, even our neighbors experiencing financial hardships. In fact, 100 percent of financial assistance dollars come from donations made by members and the community to Y for All Campaign. When you support the Y for All Annual Campaign and our special events, you’re making a difference in the community.

UPPING HER GAME Sofi Yandt’s first memory of the Y was over 10 years ago — a memory she calls one of the best she has experienced during her time here. As a six-year-old, Sofi remembers participating in the Y-Triathlon summer camp with her brother. Little did she know, those times were where her Y journey was just beginning. Throughout her early teens, Sofi has found herself volunteering at numerous Y events and as a camp counselor for the Southeast and Northwest Y’s. More currently, Sofi has become a staff member of Play and Learn where she cares for children of all ages. While Sofi has enjoyed her time working with children in summer camp and Play and Learn, she decided to direct her Y journey in a way that would benefit her now and in the future – working with a personal trainer. Sofi, a sophomore at Bloomington High School South, wanted to up her game in anticipation of joining the high school’s volleyball team next year. That’s why she hopes working with her personal trainer will help her reach her goal. “I wanted to start working with a personal trainer to strengthen my agility on the volleyball court. As someone who plays backrow, there is a lot of defense, passing, and moving to wherever I need to be to hit the ball, so having a quick reaction time is important to me.” Going into her sessions, her trainer knows what she needs to work on, so each session, her trainer brings what Sofi needs to the table in order to succeed. Sofi admits she noticed a difference right away. Open gyms got easier, and her reaction time got quicker — a goal that has made a difference in the way she plays.

PERSONAL TRAINING FOR SUCCESS

A common question Sofi gets asked is if utilizing a personal trainer is intimidating. While some trainers are bigger, stronger, and more experienced, she believes that working with someone who has an extensive knowledge of health and fitness allows her to feel comfortable and more confident in the way she completes her workouts. “Don’t be intimidated by a personal trainer! No matter

what age you are, your trainer is going to push you, help you succeed, and guide you in reaching whatever goal you have set for yourself.”

LEARNING TO LEAD Heather Dukes Rosales is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in Bloomington, IN. Twenty-three years ago, she was a summer camper at the Monroe County YMCA. For Heather, this is no coincidence. As a camper, Heather was exposed to the leadership qualities of camp counselors and leaders, life-shaping experiences through camp activities, and a lot of fun with fellow campers. She believes summer camp at the Y influenced her future decisions and acknowledges it continues to shape her life. Her favorite camp counselor taught her leadership isn’t always about being stuffy, but about having fun and understanding there are multiple ways to lead.

THE INFLUENCE OF GOOD LEADERSHIP

From the first time Heather attended summer camp, counselors welcomed her and made her feel important - leaving her to feel she was a true part of what was going on. To this day, she tries to integrate how the counselors made her feel in her day-to-day operations with patients, fellow doctors, and other adults in her life. Seeing how camp shaped her adult life, Heather believes the more positive, supportive influences you have surrounding your children, the better. SUCCESS AND SUPPORT Shari Smith knew something had changed with her body. Doctors weren’t so sure she was right. After multiple doctor visits, tests, placebos, and mislabeled diagnoses, Shari finally learned what had been affecting her body for so long: cancer. Small lymphocytic lymphoma had formed in a number of her lymph nodes creating bone pain, weakened strength and a 17 ½ centimeter mass sitting on the nerve bundle that supplied her left leg the nerve stimulation required for everyday walking.

MOST IMPORTANT GIFT

Cancer treatment helped bring back the stimulation, but after two years, her balance had been left at bay. That’s when Shari knew she needed the Monroe County YMCA. She applied for Financial Assistance hoping to become a member, but unfortunately the Y had already dispersed the funds for the year. That’s when Margie Kobow, Active Lives Program Director, stepped in. Before she knew it, Shari was a member of the Y with the assistance she needed. Margie’s generosity didn’t stop there. She met Shari in the pool many mornings. The pool was where Shari felt most comfortable after competitively swimming the majority of her early life. Slowly, but surely, Margie helped Shari feel more balanced, not only in the pool, but back on land as well. Out of the pool, Shari began participating in Building Better Balance, a class Margie taught.

When Shari first started participating, she stood, as a 56 year-old, who appeared physically healthy, surrounded by those who had endured hip replacements, major falls, and ailments that come with old age. She asked herself if it was fair to be in the same class. Margie assured her that as long as she gained benefit, then that’s enough. Within a year, the class became more of a support system. Shari celebrates the camaraderie in every class. “Everyone embraces everyone for their success. It’s inspiring to see other successes as well as revel in your own.” Shari admits that she would find herself texting Margie the day after a class and admitting to feeling stronger than the day before. That’s enough to keep her participating in the program. When Shari leaves the pool after a low-impact swim, she thanks the lifeguards. When she leaves a class, she thanks the instructors. When she passes the Welcome Center on her way out, she thanks the staff. Why? “Being able to come to the Y every day is a gift. It’s about the most important gift

I have,” she said. “When I’m asked what’s important to me now, I say two things: chemo and the YMCA.”

AN INDEPENDENT ROUTINE Jeff Seet is used to a routine. He takes the same bus every day and works

the same hours every week for the Bloomington Olive Garden along with volunteering in the community. The Monroe County YMCA is also a crucial piece of his routine. In 2008, Jeff transitioned into independent living, requiring fewer services from Stone Belt, a service provider for individuals with developmental disabilities, and a service that provided Jeff with a YMCA membership. Once he moved out of Stone Belt and on his own, Jeff lost his membership to the Y.

IMPORTANCE OF MEMBERSHIP

As an individual with autism, Jeff finds comfort in a predictable routine. Suddenly, his routine had been interfered with, making him very upset and distressed that he could no longer enjoy a huge part of his weekly routine. Thanks to the Y for All Annual Campaign, Jeff was granted financial assistance towards a Y membership of his own!

Not only does Jeff understand that his regular visits to the Y help him stay fit, he also keeps in account how grateful he is to have been able to keep his membership. When asked what his favorite part about working at Olive Garden is, he answered, “I get paid!” Jeff is proud to be in a position that allows him to pay a portion of his membership dues – and not to mention, his weekly workouts at the Y make him a stronger competitor in the Special Olympics!

YOU MAKE MORE POSSIBLE

We believe that together we create a stronger Monroe County

When you give to the Monroe County YMCA, you make a difference.

Since 1891, we’ve been meeting the needs of our community one person at a time, one life-changing experience at a time. The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Your gift makes a meaningful, enduring impact right here in our community.

We offer multiple ways to meet your personal giving goals: • Our Y for All Annual Campaign provides financial assistance for programs, memberships, and camps for youth and families in need, subsidizes purposeful programs, and supports our community outreach initiatives. No portion of Y For All is financed with membership or program fees, but is 100 percent funded by generous donations from our neighbors in the community. • Capital Giving ensures every Y facility and equipment is safe, secure, up-to-date, and designed to meet the ongoing needs of our community. • The Endowment Fund assures Y programs will continue to change lives for generations to come. For more information on how you can give to make an impact TODAY, please contact the Development Office at 812-961-2169 or visit MonroeCountyYMCA.org The Monroe County YMCA works with other companies to provide ways for the community to support the Y for All Greatest Need Fund without any additional cost to you.
