WELCOME TO THE MONROE COUNTY YMCA!
WHERE CAUSE MEETS COMMUNITY Many people think of the YMCA as a gym, a camp, or a place to watch the kids play sports. The Y is all of these and a lot more. We strive to empower people and communities to learn about healthy living, to grow and thrive, and give back to our friends and neighbors. We all have the potential to improve the nation’s health and well-being both physically and mentally. We set values for children that can last a lifetime, and we assist adults who need our guidance. We provide help to persons with physical challenges, and we open our doors to those in need. Together, we are a better us.

Y FOR ALL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE What is Y Financial Assistance? Each year, hundreds of local children, adults, and families who may not otherwise be able to afford membership or program fees are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive at the Y, thanks to our financial assistance program. How it works... All you need to do is apply! There are two separate financial assistance application processes for the 2019 calendar year – one for memberships in November, and one for summer camps in March. Prospective applicants should visit monroecountyymca.org/ financial-assistance for more information regarding the financial assistance application process, including forms and requirements. How it’s supported... Because of the generosity from our donors and advocates, we are able to ensure the Y remains accessible for everyone, even our neighbors experiencing financial hardships. In fact, 100 percent of financial assistance dollars come from donations made by members and the community to Y for All Campaign. When you support the Y for All Annual Campaign and our special events, you’re making a difference in the community.

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen With so many demands on today’s families, parents need all the support they can get. That’s why child care at the Y is about more than looking after kids. We are here six days a week providing a nurturing environment of warmth, friendliness, and freedom. Our programs support families with young children so they can feel free to take the time they need for their own health and wellness while their children are learning foundational skills, developing healthy and trusting relationships, and building self-reliance.

REDISCOVERING FRIENDSHIP AND FITNESS AT THE Y For many aging adults, finding the right form of exercise can be a challenge. With increasing joint pain, as well as waning flexibility and agility, exercise can feel limiting. At the Monroe County YMCA, we believe water exercise is the solution for older adults who desire an active lifestyle. Water exercise is much gentler on our joints, which allows for a wider range of motion than exercise on land. Muscles lengthen and relax in the water, allowing aging adults to experience a significant increase in mobility. Our Y members love water exercise so much that a number of them have been coming to our Monroe County YMCA for the Deep Water Aqua Fit class for years—several of them have been attending the class for more than 20 years. Members of this Aqua Fit group believe their experiences in the class and with one another have been life altering in the best way possible. Donna Fromm, a member of our Y since it opened its doors in 1981, reflected on the water’s impact on her life. She shared that “to be able to move… unencumbered, and not feel the stress on your joints, it’s very freeing. It’s emotionally lifting in many ways.” She also expressed “it is exhilarating to be in [the] class and run again. It’s exhilarating to do things we aren’t able to do otherwise.” Amazingly, the benefits of the Aqua Fit class go far beyond physical improvements for this group. Judy Schroeder, a member of 14 years, shared that “the group is a very welcoming community.” She reflected on joining the class and initially feeling like “the newbie,” but that feeling quickly disappeared. The group explained the Aqua Fit class is much more than exercise for them; it is what motivates them to get out of the house and be more social. They joked that their instructors are usually after them for talking during class, but they explained if someone misses a class, they want to be brought up-to-speed with what’s going on in everyone’s lives.
Judy exuded gratitude, explaining they “have a good, supportive community, and we worry about one another when we don’t see each other.” Their community is so strong that many of the members even go out for lunch after every Aqua Fit class. Several Aqua Fit participants expressed how thankful they are for the Y. The Monroe County YMCA is not only a place where they have experienced dramatic health improvements—it is a place that has fostered new friendships, provided emotional comfort, and continues to cultivate an incredible community. Visit www.monroecountyymca.org or call (812) 332-5555 to learn how a water aerobics class can benefit your personal health.

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH
MOVING FOR A HEALTHIER YOU Four years ago, Ellie O’Connor had been in the hospital for open heart surgery. When her cardiac rehabilitation with IU Health ended, her doctors recommended that she become a member of the YMCA to continue her recovery in our Cardiac Rehab class. Little did Ellie know, that recommendation would change her life. Ellie may have begun her health journey at the Y with Cardiac Rehab, but today, she’s a well-seasoned participant of several Healthy Lifestyles classes available at our YMCA. In addition to Cardiac Rehab, Ellie likes to attend two other programs: Building Better Balance and Moving for a Healthier You. While each program has significantly improved her health and life as a whole, Moving for a Healthier You has enhanced her life in ways she couldn’t imagine it would. As a nurse of 50 years, Ellie was used to being on her feet and moving around. After she left the workforce, she noticed that she had gained some weight, and comfortable movement was becoming an issue for her. When she heard about Moving for a Healthier You, she knew it could be just what she needed. Ellie shared that “at 72 years old, [she has] never felt better in [her] life [when it comes to] moving.” Because of Moving for a Healthier You, Ellie is able to exercise with supervision from experts, which she considers an enormous benefit of the class. She also appreciates the fact that our instructors suggest adapted exercises that may be more comfortable for participants to perform. In addition to the physical enhancements Ellie has noticed in her body and life, she also expressed immense gratitude for the community aspect of the class. Ellie lived in Virginia all of her life before she made the move to Indiana at age 68. Her daughter and grandchildren, who live in Bloomington, were her motivation to leave her home state. Beyond her next of kin, Ellie was in a new state without any connections. Moving for a Healthier You, and the Monroe County YMCA as a whole, introduced Ellie to an abundance of people in our community, as well as an abundance of people who are her peers. She shared that two of the most significant benefits of participating in our Healthy Lifestyles programs are the “circle of friends and support” that are gained. Moving for a Healthier You provides a “good support system,” which can have an incredible impact on life as an aging adult. Ellie encourages anyone who is struggling with weight, balance, or fitness as an older adult to join the Y and participate in the Healthy Lifestyles programs that are offered. The programs have made such a positive impact in her life; they can do the same for you! If you have questions about any one of our Healthy Lifestyles programs, please contact Margie Kobow at (812) 961-2175 or mkobow@monroecountyymca.org.

YOU MAKE MORE POSSIBLE
We believe that together we create a stronger Monroe County
When you give to the Monroe County YMCA, you make a difference.
Since 1891, we’ve been meeting the needs of our community one person at a time, one life-changing experience at a time. The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Your gift makes a meaningful, enduring impact right here in our community.
We offer multiple ways to meet your personal giving goals: • Our Y for All Annual Campaign provides financial assistance for programs, memberships, and camps for youth and families in need, subsidizes purposeful programs, and supports our community outreach initiatives. No portion of Y for All is financed with membership or program fees, but is 100 percent funded by generous donations from our neighbors in the community. • Capital Giving ensures every Y facility and equipment is safe, secure, up-to-date, and designed to meet the ongoing needs of our community. • The Endowment Fund assures Y programs will continue to change lives for generations to come. For more information on how you can give to make an impact TODAY, please contact the Development Office at 812-961-2169 or visit monroecountyymca.org/giving. The Monroe County YMCA works with other companies to provide ways for the community to support the Y for All Greatest Need Fund without any additional cost to you.
