Photographer Mark Peters, who lives in eastern Washington, first spotted this bobcat in profile when driving around the National Bison Range north of Missoula in search of wildlife. “Then, after I parked, he was so well camouflaged I couldn’t see him until I got out my binoculars and scanned the tall grass for a while,” says Peters, who visits Montana regularly to visit family and photograph wildlife. Seeing the bobcat framed by the colorful fall foliage, Peters knew he had a potentially great photograph. “But I was able to shoot only two frames before he took off. Fortunately, they both turned out pretty good, with the focus right on his face.” n
