The Warrior Tradition }} Airs 8pm Monday, November 11 Also 11/13 1am, 4am WORLD  11/12 5pm; 11/13 mdnt, 8am, 2pm Explore the complicated ways the culture and traditions of Native Americans have affected their participation in the United States military. This tells the stories of Native American warriors from their own points of view — stories of service and pain, of courage and fear. The Warrior Tradition dispels the old duality of the Noble Savage/helpless victim that has dominated our cultural portrait of Native Americans for more than a century. But it’s a more complicated story. Indian warriors have a wide mix of emotions and motives — patriotism, pride, rage, courage, practicality, and spirituality, all mingling with an abiding respect for tribal, familial, and national traditions. There’s more to the story than heroism. And there’s more than one way to be a warrior. More than a dozen Native American veterans appear in the film. They each have their own reasons for having served and for how the warrior tradition played a role in their lives. Among those who share their stories are veterans of wars and conflicts ranging from World War II to ongoing deployments in the Middle East. They are members of tribes from all over the United States, including the Comanche and Apache Tribes of Oklahoma, the Mississippi Choctaw, Navajo Nation, and the Menominee, among many others. Decade of Fire }} Airs 9pm Monday, November 4 Also 11/6 1am WORLD  11/6 6pm, 11pm; 11/7 7am, 1pm; 11/9 10am In the 1970s, the Bronx was on fire. Left unprotected by the city government, nearly a quarter-million people were displaced as their close-knit, multi-ethnic neighborhood burned to the ground, reducing the community to rubble. While insidious government policies caused the devastation, it was the African American and Latino residents who bore the blame. Decade of Fire reveals the real reasons for the devastation and shows what can happen when a community chooses to fight back and reclaim their neighborhood.

In the aftermath of war, some have been able to leave their home countries and reach safety, while others still languish in hiding and fear for their lives.

The Secret Weapon That Won World War II }} Airs 4pm Sunday, November 10

This program reveals how the small Florida town of Boca Raton and a tiny device turned the tide of World War II for Allied forces. In the early years of World War II, Hitler’s U-boats ruled the Atlantic, blockading British ports in an attempt to starve England into defeat and sinking the American convoys re-supplying Britain. British radar stations could spot large waves of German bombers crossing the English Channel, but they needed a radar system to help detect smaller-scale submarines. Pictured: Taffy Bowen (center) was a Welsh scientist Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent to the United States with the secrets of England’s War Department to escape the German blitz .

Pilgrimage In the travelogue series Pilgrimage, seven celebrities are stripped of their everyday comforts and must live as modern day pilgrims as they trek a famous medieval pilgrimage, the Camino de Santiago. The Camino de Santiago, known in English as the Way of Saint James among other names, is a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried. As the Pilgrims make their journey, will their experiences change the way they think about themselves and their faith?

Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) graduates celebrate at Taconic Correctional Facility in June, 2017.

College Behind Bars This four-part documentary film series directed by award-winning filmmaker Lynn Novick, produced by Sarah Botstein, and executive produced by Ken Burns, tells the story of a small group of incarcerated men and women struggling to earn college degrees and turn their lives around in one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs in the United States – the Bard Prison Initiative. Shot over four years in maximum and medium security prisons in New York State, the four-hour film takes viewers on a stark and intimate journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time — our failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the over two million Americans living behind bars. Through the personal stories of the students and their families, the film reveals the transformative power of higher education and puts a human face on America’s criminal justice crisis. It raises questions we urgently need to address: What is prison for? Who has access to educational opportunity? Who among us is capable of academic excellence? How can we have justice without redemption?

The Chaperone }} Airs 8pm Sunday, November 24 Also 11/26 1am, 4am The star, writer, and director of Downton Abbey the series and film reunite in The Chaperone, based on Laura Moriarty’s best-selling novel and featuring actress Elizabeth McGovern, screenwriter Julian Fellowes, and director Michael Engler. This a Jazz-age quest for personal fulfillment features two markedly different women. McGovern (Downton Abbey, Ordinary People) stars as Norma Carlisle, the diffident chaperone to fellow Kansan, Louise Brooks, destined to become a 1920s sex symbol, played by co-star Haley Lu Richardson (Split). The cast also includes Victoria Hill (First Reformed), Géza Röhrig (Son of Saul), Campbell Scott (House of Cards), Blythe Danner (Will & Grace), Miranda Otto (Homeland, The Lord of the Rings), and New York CityBallet principal dancer Robert Fairchild. Telling the fictionalized backstory of real-life silent-screen star Louise Brooks, The Chaperone begins in 1922, when Brooks is a teenage modern-dance sensation in her hometown, Wichita, Kansas. Winning a place at the renowned Denishawn Dance Company in New York City, run by Ruth St. Denis (Otto) and Ted Shawn (Fairchild), Louise requires a chaperone for her journey from staid Middle America to the Gatsby-like glory of the big city.
