“Hiding In Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness” features first-person accounts from more than 20 young people, ranging in age from 11 to 27, who live with mental health conditions, as well as parents, teachers, friends, healthcare providers in their lives, and independent mental health experts. The film, which includes several participants from Montana, presents an unvarnished window into daily life with mental health challenges, from seemingly insurmountable obstacles to stories of hope and resilience. Through the experiences of these young people, the film confronts the issues of stigma, discrimination, awareness, and silence, and, in doing so, helps advance a shift in the public perception of mental health issues today.

Joe Papp in Five Acts FRIDAY, JUNE 3 8PM Also 6/9 2am

Ahead of the 60th Anniversary Season of Free Shakespeare in The Park at New York City’s Delacorte Theater in Central Park, “American Masters: Joe Papp in Five Acts” tells the story of this indomitable, street-wise champion of the arts. As founder of The Public Theater, Free Shakespeare in the Park and producer of groundbreaking plays like Hair, A Chorus Line and for colored girls…, Papp believed great art was for everyone, not just a privileged few. A cultural change agent for more than fifty years, Papp’s stages held up a mirror to society with work that reflected the reality of people’s lives. More than perhaps any other cultural figure in recent history, Papp worked to expand public access to the arts. “We have public libraries,” he would argue, “Why not public theaters?”

Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road TUESDAY, JUNE 14 8PM Also 6/18 1am, 10:31pm

The principal originator of the “California sound,” musician, singer, songwriter, record producer and co-founder of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson is known for his novel approach to composition and recording and is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative and significant musicians of the 20th century. The new documentary “American Masters – Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road” follows Wilson on a drive through Los Angeles with his longtime friend and Rolling Stone editor Jason Fine. With Fine behind the wheel and Wilson selecting the music, they reflect on the formative and creative periods in Wilson’s life as they revisit the places that helped to shape his career.

Planet California WEDNESDAYS AT 9PM Begins June 22

Rather than revisit the “usual” California destinations, this award-winning team of filmmakers takes a stunningly entertaining look at California’s least-known scenic and wild wonders.

Rivers of Gold 6/22 9PM WORLD 6/28 6PM, 11PM; 6/29 7AM

California is a land of extremes—tallest, deepest, highest, hottest. But in a rapidly changing and thirsty world, drought, dams and fire pose dire threats to an ecosystem connected by rivers on land, in the air and in the sea.

Close Encounters 6/29 9PM

Hollywood may captivate, but in one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, the real stars of California—a wild and spectacular cast of creatures in the sea and on land, from blue whales to burrowing owls—are ready for their close-up.
