Internationally renowned singer, songwriter and performer Jim Salestrom takes the stage on 11th & Grant. Jim’s storied career includes performances and recordings with Dolly Parton, John Denver, Jimmy Ibbotson, Kenny Rogers, Emmylou Harris, and countless other legendary artists. Meeting new folks and sharing his songs and stories have taken Jim around the world, where he writes compelling music based on his experiences, putting emotional depth front and center. He says, “I try to write thought-provoking songs that will get people to take a look at their lives, songs to make you laugh or cry, tunes with family values about the way I was raised”. He has played for four U.S. Presidents and at the Supreme Court. Jim regularly sings the National Anthem at ball parks, and continues his musical adventure that began at 15 years old. Jim Salestrom shares his touching music and notable life story on 11th & Grant.

Sean, an American now living in Ireland, writes a postcard to his family back home. “You were right about Ireland,” he writes. “There’s music everywhere here. It’s in the trees, it’s in the rivers, in the wind and rain. It rolls in on Atlantic waves.” The postcards appear throughout the program as signposts to keep the viewer informed of the location, and performers share associations they have with the location or the song they are about to perform.

Backroads of Montana Coffee Creek to Haugan Travel to the town of Coffee Creek for a stop at Nemec’s Parts and Repair. Visit the town of Haugan to visit one of the oldest U.S. Forest Service nurseries in the West. Sample a slice of one of the best pizzas in the world in Bigfork and wind up at the Nevada City Music Hall to listen to the largest public collection of automated music machines in North America. Harlo to Huntley The Backroads crew attends the annual threshing bee in Huntley to visit a simpler era when hay wagons were piled high and steam ruled the prairie. At the Harlo Theatre in Harlowton, students run everything from popcorn sales to projectors, proving there’s more to this little theatre than box office returns. In Grass Range, a group of folks come from miles around one Sunday every month for a sense of community and nostalgia—and because they love to dance. Airs 11/5 12pm

Places of Note We remember the legendary Ozark Club in Great Falls, visit the Ringing Rocks geological site near Pipestone, profile the fabled Butte entertainer “Luigi” and more. William Marcus hosts the program from the Rialto Theatre in Deer Lodge. Airs 11/6 5pm

Singing in the Wires Spend a day with the Lunch Lady at Greenfield School in Fairfield as she prepares a special meal that’s 100 percent Montana made. In Kalispell, enter the world of antique phones, and then veer off the road to some of Montana’s beautiful lakes and ponds to observe the springtime ritual of birds’ courtship dances. Finally, meet a man in Fort Benton whose skill in crafting musical instruments is only surpassed by his generous spirit. Airs 11/10 5:30am; 11/19 12pm

Rockets, Peaks and Poets We visit the Big Sky Rocketry Association and watch their launch event near Twin Bridges and then explore a geologic curiosity near Sunburst called “Jerusalem Peaks.” We also profile Dixon poet Victor Charlo. Fort Peck to Ovando Meet Pearl Nickels who, in her 90s, still works every day on the ranch near Fort Peck. Learn about gumbo —a volcanic clay that covers everything it touches and makes getting around a sticky mess. St. Mary of the Assumption has served farmers in the Ruby Valley for more than a century. It takes a special effort to keep the the Monture Guard station north of Ovando in working condition. Finally, discover the Blackfoot Pathways: Sculpture in the Wild Park near Lincoln. Paintings, Partials and Pies Competitors spit cherries and eat pies at the Flathead Cherry Festival in Polson. Hobson dentist Virgil Stewart began his practice during an era when most rural Montanans could not afford such care. An unexpected natural wonder rises out of the prairie in the Sweetgrass Hills, and more. Airs 11/17 5:30am

Hook, Line and Singer A highway accident left Chris Clasby a quadriplegic, but it couldn’t diminish his passion for hunting and fishing. Enjoy a tour of Rock City near Valier, where a sandstone metropolis of hoodoos was carved by Two Medicine River. Chontay Standing Rock, a student at Stone Child College on the Rocky Boy Reservation, has a unique approach to American Indian songs. And in Deer Lodge, retired rancher Gene Hensen displays an unlikely collection of home appliances. Airs 11/24 5:30am

Montana AG Live Alternative Biological Weed Control For years, chemical herbicides have been used in production agriculture and on our home lawns and gardens to control unwanted weeds. These controls can work well, but there’s always the possibility of waning effectiveness

over years of reapplication and adaptation, and there are some health concerns with many of these chemical agents. One solution is biologic control: using other living organisms, such as insect, nematodes or bacteria to reduce weed populations. Airs 11/7 11am

Controlling Pesky Critters Moles and voles, gophers, skunks, raccoons, and many other pests, can seem like a curse. The damage they do to turf, ornamentals, flowers, along with the loss of fruits and vegetables can be a small, but annoying problem, but these things can also amount to a lot of time and expense. Labor Crunch in Montana Ag It takes a whole lot of people to get Montana’s agricultural products into the hands of the final consumer. Ranch hands, seasonal labor on harvest crews, agrichemical drivers, workers in the livestock auction yards and feed stores, implement dealers & technicians, veterinary technicians, long-haul transport drivers and many others all play a role in the process. Over the last year or so, we’ve all seen examples of changes in wages and an unsettled labor market in Montana. Airs 11/14 6pm; 11/21 11am

11th & Grant with Eric Funk Dave Walker Band This legendary singer has toured all over the world with some of rock’s biggest names; Savoy Brown, Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath. Today, the Dave Walker Band performs blues-rock with a bit of R&B. Formed in 2007, the band features Montana players Jim Lewis on guitar, Eddie Tsuru on bass, Mike Gillan on drums and Chris Cundy on Hammond B3 organ. Airs, 11/1 2am

Keeping the Barn The story of Montana’s barns is a personal one. The buildings hold more than just feed and livestock. They remain an iconic part of the Montana landscape. Livelihoods and lives depended on their quality and durability. The barns of Montana are beautiful symbols of hard work and ingenuity and a reflection of the families who use them. Like everything in America, the barn is a melting pot of ideas and styles. Airs 11/1 3am; 11/27 11am

How Montanans Voted: Analyzing the 2020 Election What were the voting trends that led to Montana’s 2020 Election results? How big a factor did young first time voters play in the outcome? These are some of the questions explored as we go beyond the final vote totals. Carroll College Exit Polling provides insight from key counties across the state. Voters are also asked about a variety of topics including their trust in organizations and the media. John Twiggs hosts along with analysts Alex Street from Carroll College and Christina Barsky from the University of Montana. Airs 11/2 12pm

Charles M. Russell NWR: Nature’s Timeless Landscape The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is a sprawling slice of the American West. Located in the heart of Montana’s breaks country, the refuge has abundant wildlife species including sharptailed grouse, sage grouse, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope, elk and over 236 kinds

The Beef Trail: A Pioneering Montana Ski Area The little-known story of the Butte Ski Club and its once-popular ski area, the “Beef Trail,” created by volunteers, many of them miners, in 1938. A number of innovative ideas and technologies pioneered by early members of the Butte Ski Club were later adapted by some of the West’s more popular ski areas. This documentary brings us vintage movie footage, old photos and great stories from skiers who remember skiing the Beef. Airs 11/3 4am; 11/4 7pm; 11/7 10am; 11/8 2am

Do-It-Yourself Home Game Processing: How to Skin An Elk Pt 3 This five part series helps educate hunters on how to skin a deer and an elk in the wild. These videos have been written up in Safari Club International and Traditional Bowhunter magazines and feature Terry and Shelley Swart, formerly of Belgrade, Montana. Airs 11/3 5am

Bring Them Home/Iniskim These two short films were shot simultaneously on the 2016 fall Blackfeet buffalo drive. “Bring Them Home” is an intimate documentary about the only indigenous tribal-led buffalo drive in North America. It follows members of the Blackfeet Nation as they experience the power of the American bison while driving

their herd through rough terrain and hostile weather to their winter pasture—a rare ritual of stewardship that brings hope for a modern-day cultural rebirth. “Iniskim” is a fiction film inspired by a true story that follows a young Blackfeet girl’s journey from trauma to recovery. By reconnecting with the ancient power of the buffalo, the timeless landscape of her ancestors, and the wisdom of her culture, her life is changed forever. Airs 11/12 12:30pm

Evelyn Cameron: Pictures From A Worthy Life Evelyn Cameron left a life of privilege in England and found a sense of peace on the Montana prairie. With an independent spirit suited for the American West, she started her own photography business. She left behind a legacy of photographs and diary writings providing an intimate portrait of pioneer life rarely seen. Airs 11/14 10am

Montana: the Second Century: The Adventures of Moccasin Joe Explore the wonders and horrors of Montana’s “Wild West” through the eyes of a young New England man: Sgt. George S. Howard, nicknamed Moccasin Joe. As a scout for the 2nd Cavalry, Company E, George participated in the battles of Rosebud, Powder River, Tongue River, and Slim Buttes; marched in blinding snowstorms; starved during the Horsemeat March of 1876; and roamed through Yellowstone. He recorded his most intimate thoughts in his 257-page diary. Airs 11/19 12:30pm

Meet a special group of retirees that’s spending its golden years welcoming adventurers to the campgrounds near Seeley Lake. Their volunteerism doesn’t stop at the campground gate, they’re also leaving their mark on the community. You may think working on a Montana ranch is one way to disappear, but not at Lolo’s Dunrovin Ranch. Someone’s always watching. A sure sign of winter is when Montana’s rivers freeze. We’ll learn a little science and observe the beauty of Montana’s river ice formations. It’s touted as the most visited state park in Montana, but Giant Springs State Park means much more to the residents of Great Falls. It’s where they continually return to recreate and reflect. Butte was once the world’s largest producer of copper—the “Richest Hill on Earth,” the town that “plumbed and electrified America,” the Pittsburgh of the West. The community’s toughness, vitality and solidarity speak to what’s missing in America today, while raising profound questions about the costs and consequences of industrialization and use of natural resources. his art, sculpture and writing to tell the story of the transition of the Montana landscape from the open range to fences and plows. Russell also carefully depicted Native Americans just as their traditional way of life was coming to an end. The film also reveals the impact of Russell’s wife, Nancy, who successfully promoted his art, making him the highest-paid artist in America at the time of his death in 1926. As Russell’s legacy grew in the hierarchy of American art he became influential in Hollywood westerns, and his art remains a romantic brand on the modern culture of Montana and the West. On the night of March 24, 1944, a mass escape of Allied soldiers from the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III was set into motion. Hundreds of men risked their lives to regain their freedom, and although only 76 of more than 200 men who attempted the escape succeeded, it lasts as one of the most audacious demonstrations of resistance to Hitler’s tyranny during World War II.

Inspired by another successful escape in a neighboring compound, Stalag Luft III escape mastermind Roger Bushell and the X Committee reopen a second escape tunnel nicknamed Harry, as teams begin assembling costumes and forging documents. When the escape finally goes ahead, 200 men assemble in Hut 104 but are met with a series of problems to overcome and a constant danger of being discovered. Once out of the camp with only a few rations and their own two feet, over 600 miles of occupied land and sea lay between the POWs and Allied Britain.

Taping a TV show during a pandemic is challenging, but they still had fun on the Quilting Arts set. The editorial team, Kristine Lundblad and Vivika DeNegre, drove to Ohio from their homes in New England—a 10-hour trek. Needless to say, they were a bit punchy when they arrived. This year, Vivika pitched in and hosted the show during the pandemic.
