The unlikely pairing of two modern visionaries, Vilmos Oláh, a Hungarian violin virtuoso, and Eric Funk, contemporary classical composer from the heart of Montana, has resulted in a new piece of music unlike anything written before. Vili: Concerto for Violin Alone is an extreme concerto that pushes the boundaries of music and our notion of the possible. Oláh must play the solo and orchestra parts simultaneously. It presents a seemingly impossible task; he must emulate flutes, oboes, clarinet, and timpani, and must move his bow towards the bridge in an exact position to capture crisp brass punch of a trumpet fanfare. It’s a reflection of the violinist, the composer, and the unquenchable human spirit of eastern Europe. When facing endless occupations, wars, and suffering, the Hungarian people have continually risen to prevail while revealing a richness of deep feeling, a wealth of soul, and indelible spirit. It is this powerful force that Funk captures in a work that requires courage, perseverance, and phenomenal technical skill, creating a vehicle where one man alone can stand as a collective. Music is becoming simply a commodity - a global sound. Perhaps “Concerto for the Violin Alone” will become a blueprint for the future, and alter the way composers and musicians think and create. Two modern pioneers, from different worlds sharing the same voice, embark on a thrilling journey to reimagine what music can be.

Hinterland Hinterland is noir crime drama set in the scenic, centuries-old town of Aberystwyth, Wales. Into this realm steps the enigmatic DCI Tom Mathias, a brilliant but troubled man on the run from his past. Together with his equally intelligent and complex partner DI Mared Rhys, Mathias tackles mystifying murder cases that take viewers from the windswept sand dunes of the Welsh coastline to the badlands and beyond.

 Devil’s Bridge (Parts 1 & 2) Airs 8:50pm Thursday, January 12

DCI Tom Mathias is a man on the run from his past. Having just left the Met police in London, he finds himself holed up in a caravan on the outskirts of Aberystwyth, an university town on the west coast of Wales sandwiched between the Irish sea and a vast mountainous hinterland. He hardly has time to unpack before being called to the scene of a brutal attack at an isolated chalet in the sand dunes.

 Night Music (Parts 1 & 2) Airs 8:50pm Thursday, January 19

At a remote hinterland farmhouse the body of keen photographer Idris Williams is found following an anonymous call to the police. At first it seems that the reclusive Idris was the victim of a burglary that went horribly wrong, but Mathias’ instincts tell him otherwise.

 Penwyllt (Parts 1 & 2) Airs 8:50pm Thursday, January 26

High in the hills above Aberystwyth, the body of an unidentified young man is found at the bottom of a lake in a disused quarry near the village of Penwyllt.

Storm of the Century: The Blizzard of ’49  Airs 7pm Thursday, January 26 Also 1/29 10am

This one-hour documentary film tells the story of the worst series of storms in Wyoming’s history. But for all the tragedy and loss, suffering and death, there was also hope and heroism, unselfish sacrifice and generosity. The blizzard brought out the best in people. Wyoming citizens from all walks of life cooperated together and demonstrated exceptional ingenuity in the face of dire circumstances. There were extraordinary acts of kindness, with people generously giving their time and resources. The public worked together to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and ultimately won in the end. It began quietly enough as Sunday January, 2, 1949 dawned under partly cloudy skies and a forecast for temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s with scattered snow showers. Later that day, the skies darkened, the winds picked up and the temperature began to drop. It began to snow. By that evening a full raging blizzard was upon the eastern portion of the state. It didn’t let up for three days. But that was just the beginning.. Additional violent snow storms continued to sweep through the state for the next 45 days. Throughout this series of storms, wind speeds fluctuated between 30 and 80 miles per hour. The snow drifted 20 to 30 feet high in places. The average temperature was consistently below zero.

Your Generosity Is Inspiring! A Special Thank You to Our Members… We are pleased to report that thanks to your continued generosity, MontanaPBS exceeded the goal of $215,000 for our December pledge drive. Your contributions help provide programs like Glacier National Park: The Crown of the Continent and Backroads of Montana which celebrate the beauty of Montana and our independent spirit. Programs that teach us and take us places we have never been before. Most importantly, they are programs that are made available for everyone to experience. We know that a pledge drive can interrupt your regular routine but we hope that you were able to enjoy one of the many concerts offered that you would be otherwise unable to attend, or maybe you were able to delight in highlights from the past 25 years of Backroads of Montana from the comfort of your own home. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who pledged during the December drive. Thank you for making public television in Montana a priority in your life! If you meant to pledge but have not yet, there is still time as we are accepting pledges through January 11th. Please call us at 1-800-426-8243.

MontanaPBS thanks RSVP volunteers

On January 16th, 2017, national PBS is launching their own multiplatform PBS Kids channel which will feature many of our best children’s programs. MontanaPBS has made the decision to replace our current kids channel schedule with this national PBS schedule on January 16th at 6am. We are excited about the strong program schedule, national promotion and the benefits this change will bring to our station. To many in our audience, this transition will be very seamless, as channel assignments for our new MontanaPBS Kids service, both on on-air and on cable systems, will not change. The new MontanaPBS Kids channel will present the very best PBS award-winning programs targeted to our core PBS children’s TV audience, ages 2-8. On January 16th, the new program schedule shown to the right replaces the schedule on page 29.

MontanaPBS Kids Live Stream One of the most exciting features of the new MontanaPBS Kids channel, will be the 24/7 digital livestream of the service on many devices. Children and families will be able to watch the MontanaPBS Kids livestream on our website, on pbskids.org and on the PBS Kids Video App. The PBS Kids Video App is available on a variety of mobile devices and tablets. Very soon after launch, we hope to announce availability of the livestream on over-the-top platforms such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One and Chromecast.

Increase the impact of your donation Did you know that with a matching gift you can sometimes double or even triple the power of your gift? Your company may match your gift to MontanaPBS and increase the total amount of your contribution.

Here’s how it works Check with your Human Resources office to see if they offer a matching gift program. If they do, they will match your gift to a certain level. All you need to do is pick up your company’s required form and send it to us—we’ll take care of the rest. Below is a limited list of organizations who participate in matching gift programs. If you are a current or retired employee of one of these companies, they may match your contribution. IBM Chevron Conoco Phillips Exxon Mobile Foundation First Interstate Bank General Mills 3M Foundation UPS Foundation Home Depot Foundation

BNSF Foundation DOW Chemical Co. AT&T Foundation GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Northwestern Energy Davidson Companies ING Foundation Boeing Company Oracle

Zoot Enterprises General Electric Plum Creek US Bank Corp Macy’s Mitchell’s Oil Field Service DA Davidson and Company

If your company is not listed, ask your personnel department if they have a matching gift program—many do. Maybe yours does, too! Your generosity will go that much further in support of public television and MontanaPBS. Thank you! Send your company’s matching gift form to: Friends of MontanaPBS  ·  P.O. Box 10715  ·  Bozeman, MT 59719-0715 For other ways you can help support your public television service contact us at
