GIRLS Ennis he Lady Mustangs had no problem ripping through conference and are prepared to head into postseason with confidence. Under the guidance of new coach Nick Burgess the Lady Mustangs “are playing hard and have learned from every game,” Burgess said. With a goal to work hard and improve every game, the Lady Mustangs have proved those goals are being met. Coach Burgess is keeping his cool while preparing his team for the postseason and remains optimistic about their contentions. “We hope to be playing our best basketball at tournament time,” he said. “I am confident that if we continue to work hard and get better, we will have a chance to advance deep into tournament play.”

Harrison Willow Creek Even while dealing with the “injury bug” the Lady Wildcats have proved to be a dominating force on the court. Coach Lisa Cooper is happy with her team’s ability to show sportsmanship and composure both on the court and off. “We have a group of girls that really get along well and have stepped up their play from last year,” Cooper said. With strong district opponents and Divisionals in the future, the Lady Wildcats are preparing for battle, working on aggressive defense and staying healthy. “Our district and division is really strong this year,” Cooper said. “There about six teams for the 11/12C district that will contend for the district title and several teams from the 13 and 14C that could win the division.”

played some top-notch basketball this season and may pose a threat to any team that shares the court with them. Every girl from senior to freshman has “stepped up,” according to Coach Ben Johnson, which turns out a wellrounded team. “The girls are having a great year and we are playing great team basketball,” Johnson said. “I feel really good about how we play and we can handle every night.” In a tough district with teams on top of their game, Gardiner will pit the best against the best but that doesn’t deter Johnson’s confidence. “It is naturally going to be tough when we have one of the toughest districts,” he said. “I have a wonderful group of girls who can do anything when they put their mind to it. We have the opportunity to be one of the eight remaining teams in state.”

Lima After coming off of a couple of tough seasons, according to head coach Jack Hutchison, the Lady Bears are trying to recoup what makes this game great – fun. “The game has to be fun for them so we are working on that probably mostly of all,” Hutchison said. “We are trying to make the game more positive.”

“without much varsity experience,” Swandal is pleased to see how much the girls have learned and how far they have come. “We’re having a very fun season so far,” Swandal said. “The girls get along and work very hard together.” Keeping up in the tough district, the Lady Rebels have proven all that hard work pays off and have put up some very impressive scores. Swandal is optimistic about the Lady Rebels “hoop dreams” come postseason. “Our goal is always to play our best effort every night,” Swandal said. “We hope to compete in the top end come tournament time.”

basketball skills and to compete at a competitive level throughout the season.” With a “newer” program, Kokot is finding it difficult to know where the Lady Big Horns will stand come postseason; however, he feels they will have a good chance to be able to compete at Districts. “We would love nothing more than to place in the District Tournament and qualify for the Western Divisionals for the first time in Lone Peak history,” he said.

Fighting to stay alive while running toward the middle of district standings, the Lady Bears may have a shot in the postseason, but Hutchison believes their district is tough. “Realistically we are going to be battling to remain near the middle of the pack as opposed to being in the cellar,” he said. “We have some outstanding teams in our league.”

Lone Peak Still in the process of “building their program,” Lone Peak’s Lady Big Horns have proved anything is possible. Although his team is young without a senior in sight, Coach Cyle Kokot has remained positive and enthusiastic. “Our girls have worked hard and set high goals for the season,” he said. “With that being said our plan is to simply improve our

The Lady Eagles started their season with some hard knocks under the net by playing Class B teams right out of the gate. Coach Jeanette Walhof appreciated those games as a lesson tool to challenge her girls to improve and play at the top levels of the game. “We have had a variety of ups and downs,” Walhof said. “But we are coming together to rise as one.” This is a theme the Lady Eagles live by. The Lady Eagles have made it their goal to place at the district tournament, enabling them to advance to divisionals. “We are very positive about our opportunities for the postseason,” Walhof said. “We have a tough district with seven teams in contention for the top four spots.”

Sheridan While the season has been challenging, the Lady Panthers have walked through the storm with their chins up. Coach Wendy Fabel is proud of how well her girls have held their composure. “I give all the credit to the girls for their hard work,

patience, and continued positive outlook,” Fabel said. “When they can walk away from a loss and still smile, we have a great group of young ladies.” Because the Lady Panthers are such a young team, the majority of the girls never have experienced a varsity court. Fabel has been working on the goal of having “rock hard fundamentals” before the season comes to an end and believes her team will be able to compete in postseason. “I feel the girls have a good chance of playing in (divisionals) if they continue to show the improvement we have seen so far,” Fabel said. “It may take some time and a lot of practice, but these girls will succeed.”

Twin Bridges With a goal “to get better each game,” Lady Falcons’ Head Coach Rob Lott is looking to find consistency on his bench to compete in a district that Lott describes as tough. “The number of quality teams in our district and division is the most there has been in several years,” he said. Lott won’t let that deter his team as they prepare for postseason, expecting to be “playing the best possible basketball by tournament time,” he said. “The tournaments will be very competitive and exciting. The teams that play good basketball and handle the pressure will advance to state.”

ith a goal of holding the number one seed going into Districts, the Mustangs have a tough conference that will fight them tooth and nail. The Mustangs boast an arsenal of seniors with postseason experience and are prepared to accept the challenge. Head Coach Zach Jepson is making postseason plans and hopes his senior bench will bring it on. “Hopefully that experience will put us over the top in close games come tourney time,” Jepson said. “We want to go in as number one in districts, play on Saturday nights, and make several trips to Butte.” Melea Burke/West Yellowstone News

a very challenging conference and wins are tough to come by,” Binfet said. “But we are working hard every night and are playing competitive basketball.” With improvements being made each week, Binfet believes the Lady Wolverines’ chance of a district win is within reach. “Our goal is to knock off one of the traditional powers and make divisionals,” he said. With three scoring seniors and a strong bench, possibilities are there for the Lady Wolverines to sneak in. “We improve each week, and as a coach, I feel this team has a great chance of advancing,” Binfet said.

White Sulphur Springs In a district where almost every team is a possible threat, there’s no room to not constantly improve, and the young Lady Hornets are doing just that – improving. Coach Teri Ogle believes the “quality of the play improves with each step,” and with hard work, they may come out and surprise a few. “I feel like we are right in the hunt,” Ogle said. “I don’t think any team should overlook us.” With the ultimate goal of playing beyond Districts, Ogle feels confident her girls will make a mark. “What our young team lacks in experience, we make up for in determination and heart,” she said. 6 - Western C Basketball • Valley Journal

As Lima has lost out in the playin game the past few years, just getting there would be a great achievement — but ultimately the Bears want more. “We would like to change the trend and make a shot at top four at Districts,” Apple said. “I am proud of my team and I only hope that they believe in themselves.”

Lone Peak In only their third year with a varsity program, the Big Horns are a work in progress, according to Coach Al Malinowski. While no seniors sit on the Big Horn’s bench, Malinowski boasts he has three juniors who have filled the spots nicely. “I believe their experience will help us as we try to exceed last year’s results,” he said. Malinowski is optimistic about postseason play and believes his Big Horns have a shot at some wins. “We want to be playing on Saturday at the district tournament which then gives us a chance at staying alive and playing more games, he said. “If we can remain healthy and continue to improve, I believe we can be a tough team to play.”

Coming in at just over 500 midseason has left the Bruins in a position to sleeper attack their opponents in postseason. With head Coach Jordan Featherman taking the reins, the Bruins have posted some mighty wins throughout the season. “One game at a time,” Featherman said. Mike Moore/West Yellowstone News “But we want to get back to Lone Peak Big Horns Saturday night.” Looking forward to postseason play, Featherman feels they are in a pretty good spot and are ready to face the challenging team ahead. “We Manhattan Christian should be in a position, if we take care of business, to Progress is what has been keeping the Eagles in do very well.” flight and a contender in district play. Success has run deep in the Rebels club, boasting big wins and impressive standings. After losing five seniors last season, the returning bench has cranked it up with constant improvement. Coach J.B. Boyd is impressed with how the team has adapted and how well they have stepped up to the challenge. “Our team’s ‘first’ mentality has kept us improving weekly,” Boyd said. “There are some great teams with great coaches in our district. Nolan Konen is a returning starter who has offered a great deal of leadership both on and off the floor. West Yellowstone “We want to get better every game that we play, which we have been achieving,” Coach Josh Demlow said about his Wolverines. During a struggling season, the Wolverines keep using each game to grow and mature. Demlow has watched his team persevere and feels they will grow stronger throughout the season. “We are looking to be playing our best ball going into the postseason,” he

White Sulphur Springs “Sometimes you learn a lot more about yourself when things aren’t going your way,” Head Coach Thad Hereim said about the learning experience his Hornets are gaining in only their second season with a new program. While working on confidence, the Hornets are hoping to peak at the right time in their quest for postseason play. “We want to play each game competitively and continue to improve our skills to give ourselves a chance to win,” Hereim said. “These guys have remained optimistic and have persevered. I am proud of each and every one of them. I like our chances at districts.”

Use precaution to avoid injury

T

he last thing anyone wants to hear during a sporting event is a loud pop and thud of an athlete collapsing as a result of a season ending, or possibly career ending, ACL tear. One recent study has shown with appropriate prevention in the form of balance training, stretching, strengthening and sport specific drills, female soccer athletes reduced their risk of ACL tear by 80 percent. There are many more common injuries including, but not limited to: ankle sprains, groin pulls, hamstring strains, a variety of shoulder tears, or little league arm; any of which can have a negative impact on an athlete’s season. Fortunately, like the ACL tears, the incidence of these conditions can be greatly reduced by ensuring proper warm-up including light aerobic exercise and stretching before competition, pre-season sport specific conditioning drills, balance and agility training. Athletes are susceptible to more serious injury when they continue playing with an injury; for example, returning to play too soon after an ankle sprain is asking for a repeat sprain which could

be more severe. Also, participating in high level sports when fatigued increases chances of significant injury. Thus, the importance of good old-fashioned, pre-season conditioning and a good night’s sleep before competition cannot be overstressed. Fortunately, most coaches are wise to the above information for the average competitor and design their practices around it. Not all of us, however are average. For example, if the athlete has a predisposition to injury as a result of less than optional control of the pelvis (a common factor leading to ACL tears), the usual training is most likely not enough. Physical therapists are movement scientists that have the ability to diagnosis subtle movement abnormalities, deficits in muscle control, muscle balance or coordination. The therapists can then prescribe and guide athletes through individualized treatment regimens to reduce their risk of injury and improve their athletic performance. he Alberton Lady Panthers have three simple goals: improve, build confidence, and continue working as a team. Head coach Hannah Anderson says her girls have been working hard to accomplish all three. “The girls have shown a lot of improvement over the course of the year,” she said. With a tough season behind them, the Lady Panthers are ready to attack the postseason and “give it their all.” “The team is working hard and I am very proud of them,” Anderson said.

Darby Walking the middle path between the upper and the lower parts of the bracket, the Lady Tigers are ready to roar on the district tournament courts. Coach J.P. McCrossin is pleased with his team’s improvement throughout the season. “Games are a means of measuring improvement,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to be prepared individually as well as a team going into tournaments.” McCrossin is excited about his team’s tournament future, as well as the team’s ability to lift each other

Dominating in the 13C district, the Lady Blackhawks are gearing up for a fight to the finish. Head Coach Shawn Holmes is looking to see good things ahead for his team with three goals in sight: win districts, win divisionals, win state.

If the Lady Blackhawks keep up with their season’s tradition of winning, it should be no problem to grab more in the postseason. Holmes is ready and excited for his team. “We are a young solid basketball team that has a lot of talent,” he said.

Valley Christian The Lady Eagles, with their ups and downs, have taken the season in stride, according to Coach Brennan Koch. Koch is working to keep everything in check and holding onto the goal of going beyond the district tournament. “We will be able to compete for the right to meet our goal,” Koch said. “But we will have to continue to improve our play.” Koch has confidence in his Lady Eagles and hopes they will conquer their competition as a team. “There is a sufficient skill set in this team to compete at high levels,” he said. “We just have to turn in our best games at the same time.”

Victor The Lady Pirates, helmed by Coach Drew Huls, have enjoyed a pretty good run over the season, hovering around the top three spots in their district. “We play to win the game,” Huls said, a statement that shows on the court. While heading into postseason, the Lady Pirates hope to capture wins and continue on to divisionals. “The girls have been working hard and are looking forward to the postseason,” Huls said. “We have a chance if we play our best basketball to be successful against some strong teams.”

Coach Joe Bignell. “Our younger players are really improving,” Bignell said. “Our older players have really stepped up and have outstanding leadership.” Though the Trojans have dominated, Bignell knows Districts is tough and maintains his team must remain on high alert but “feels good” about their chances. “It should be an exciting tournament with the way our district has improved,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Granite Sticking to the upper ranks of the district, Granite’s Prospectors are striving for the top. In what Head Coach Dustin Keltner calls a “competitive district,” his team has thrived and returned the competition in each of their games. “The kids are buying into what we are doing and it’s showing up on the court,” he said. and feel their outlook is good. “I think we will be a tough team to beat,” Haines said.

Valley Christian At midseason, Head Coach Aaron Hill said there’s “still a long way to go,” yet has his eye out for his Eagles to stomp on the postseason rush. “We have been working hard and have seen significant improvement,” Hill said. With goals to make a good run at the District Tournament, Hill feels though they may be an “underdog,” anything can happen. “I believe that if we play a full game to our potential, we can play with and possibly beat anyone on our conference.”

Lincoln The Lynx are on a mission and are planning a sneak attack at districts. Coach Shane Brown believes it can be done. “We are a bit of an underdog but have been playing better,” Brown said. “I believe we have the potential to surprise some teams.” With ups and down throughout the season, the Lynx have toughened themselves and are ready to shoot forward continuing to better themselves as they reach districts. “We need to peak by district tourney,” Brown said. “Make small adjustments as we proceed and continue to have high expectations of ourselves.”

The Pirates are coming in with a young team this year but Coach Drew Lewis feels his team is “deep.” “We play about nine guys even minutes every game,” he said. “We usually have pretty even scoring across the board.” Yet the Pirates have had their ups and downs, Lewis added. With that in mind the Pirates have been working on consistency. As for postseason, Lewis says the 13C district is “wide open” and is anybody’s game. “Everyone has kind of beat up on everybody,” he said. “Come tourney time it will be whoever gets hot. he Scarlets have experienced a dominating season. Their goal, going into districts, is to be equally successful competing against what first year Head Coach Bill Stockton says is “the best in the west.” Stockton is looking forward to postseason play with confidence with three key seniors leading the way, but he’s keeping his eyes on the competition. “I think we are going to be sitting in a good spot going into districts,” he said. “The Western division has a lot of talent and experienced coaches, which will make the tournament very competitive.” All in all, Stockton is impressed with his team and the flow of the team’s chemistry while adding a special nod toward his upperclassman Whitney Malatare, Alexis Shick, and Violet Pablo.

and young power coming from the bench, the Lady Vikings pose a contending force during postseason play. Success is grown by reaching goals, and Thompson’s goal list is basic but to the point: “Stay healthy, maintain good grades, practice hard to get better, and play to win,” he said. “We are definitely moving in the right direction.” As for postseason plans, Coach Thompson is confident they have a chance to place high in conference, possibly number one, but the Lady Vikings are looking beyond districts. “The ultimate goal is to win all of it,” Thompson said. “But it’s going to take a lot of hard work.”

seniors to injuries this year, yet the team works hard and concentrates on defense, according to Coach Robert Kearney. Leading the team are twin sisters Meara and Laurel Schmiedbauer, affectionately nicknamed the “Twin Towers.” Meara tops the team averaging 9.8 points per game. Not so tall is Josey Carr, a junior who plays inside post center. “She’s only 5’6, but she’s a ferocious tiger inside,” Kearney said. “What she lacks in height, she makes up in sheer energy and desire.” Carr adds 8.5 points and 11 rebounds per game. “We’re limited in numbers, so it’s challenging,” Kearney said as he looks to postseason play. “Yet our team works hard and attempts to play strong defense. The Lady Tigers have had stiff competition in the 14-C bracket. Yet riding nicely in the second place spot, Coach Tyler Hurley has postseason high hopes. “We feel good about our chances,” Hurley said. “But we can’t get complacent with Arlee, Charlo, and Superior.” The Lady Tigers have been working hard and are on a mission to reach for the stars and grab the whole deal, according to Hurley. “The girls have been coming to practice each and every day, willing to get better and it has really paid off,” Hurley said. “Our goal as a team is to have success in the postseason tournaments and hopefully make a divisional and state showing.”

Superior “It is not how you start but how you finish that is important,” — wise words from Lady Bobcats Head Coach Jeff Shultz. Although the Lady Bobcats started slow, they have been picking up steam and hope to bring a ribbon-wrapped surprise to Districts. “Our goals are to improve every day and to have fun,” Shultz said. “If we focus and come out determined, we can achieve any goal that we set out to achieve.” Overall, the learning process has been the journey for the Lady Bobcats, and postseason is another lesson. “If we can learn from our mistakes and use them as lessons,

then we have as good a chance as any team,” Shultz said. “There are a lot of talented teams out there and tournaments are going to be a blast.”

Two Eagle River The young Lady Eagles have been working out their kinks and finding their footing on the court. First year Head Coach Carla Torosian is instilling fundamentals and sportsmanship in her inexperienced team, and it shows. These are some of the nicest girls on the court. “We want to better ourselves every day,” Torosian said. “To change not only our attitudes but to also bring honor to Two Eagle River.” While wanting to build a legacy, Torosian hopes the Lady Eagles grab a district spot. “If all the kinks are smoothed out, we should do pretty well,” she said. “In this game, we can only hope for the best.”

live by many goals; number one is to stay healthy. “We started this season with 19 and our goal is to finish with 19,” Pitts said. Pitts is proud to be a part of the Warrior club and also wants to extend his thanks to the families of the players and the community of Arlee. “Each of my players has put a lot of time in on the hardwood throughout their lives, thanks to the support of their families,” he said. Another or their goals sums up the fighting spirit the Warriors possess: “Warriors never quit on a play, on a game, on each other, and most of all never go out without a fight.”

Charlo Picked to take second to last in their district at the beginning of the season, the Vikings have been on a mission to erase that thought from everybody’s mind. Charlo has been ripping through competition with ease, boasting tough-to-beat scores and stats. Seventh-year Head Coach Michael Brown says his team is “just trying to push toward the end,” and earn their spot in postseason play. “We make sure we get better each time we play,” Brown said, “making adjustments where needed.” The Vikings should prove to be a tough team to beat. “We’re starting to pick it up,” Brown said. “We’ll be alright.”

Hot Springs Savage Heat Coach Ricky DePoe said he was up in the air about how his 2013-14 team would be with only two returning starters. Yet the two returning starters, senior Jimmy Holland and Jarod White, brought leadership to the team, as did high-scoring Tanner Hoff, a junior shooting forward. “My younger players — freshmen and sophomores — came in and filled the spots. They don’t have the experience, but they have the talent,” DePoe said. While the Heat players are “not exactly tall,” they have a lot of speed, according to DePoe. “Our key to the game,” he said, “is getting up and down the floor.” The future is looking promising

for the Savage Heat, since the players are all great friends and teammates.

“The kids work extremely hard, share the ball, and believe that our defense is our trademark,” he said. With a “talented” district, the Bobcats have their work cut out, but that doesn’t deter the morale that the team carries with them to each and every game. “Our team has been playing well this season,” Toivonen said. “I would like to praise my players for being great kids. I am proud of them beyond words.”

St. Regis Optimism is abounding on the Tigers bench. After a few heartbreaking seasons, the Tigers grabbed their first win this season, breaking a 78-game losing streak dating back to 2009. Coach Taylor Nordby is beaming at the prospect of the possibility of beating conference teams. “Our team’s goal is to win a game against a conference team, someone in district 14C,” he said. “Young” is an understatement when looking at the Tigers club. St. Regis has five eighth-graders rostered as varsity. With that said, Nordby is looking on building the future, knowing these young players have years to gain varsity level experience and will only improve. As for postseason – “It will be tough for our team to go deep into postseason, however, anybody can win on any given day,” Nordby said.

Two Eagle River

Superior

After a tough season on the court, the Eagles may break out a surprise at the end. With their hard work ethic and big hearts, Coach Clay Malatare is proud of his kids and is pleased with their progress throughout the year. “Right now people see us as not too strong,” Malatare said at the beginning of the season. “But by the end of the year, we will have improved.” Through a big fan base providing support, the boys are learning one of the most important aspects about sports – confidence. “We need to stay positive,” Malatare said. “It will all work out alright.”

Creating a dominating team is no easy task, but Head Coach Chris Toivonen has done just that. The Bobcats have been strong throughout the season and Toivonen couldn’t be more pleased with the results.
