Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Now with Daylight Savings Time having arrived last month, some of our conversations centered around how hard it was to get back into a normal sleep pattern again. More than just feeling well rested, The American Heart Association (AHA) says that good sleep habits are essen‐tial for heart health. Scientific researchers have noticed a marked increase in heart attacks and strokes in the days following the change to daylight saving time each spring. However, the American Heart Association, the leading global health organization dedications to fighting heart disease and stroke, says los‐ing sleep anytime can be a major risk factor for car‐diovascular disease.

“Getting a good night’s sleep every night is vital to cardiovascular health. Adults should aim for an average of 7 hours, and babies and kids need more depending on their age.” said Donald M. Lloyd‐Jones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA, past volunteer president of the AHA. “Unfortunately, we know that as many as 1 in 3 people do not get their recommended amount of sleep each night.” According to Lloyd‐Jones, the amount of sleep and quality of sleep are important, and both can have significant impacts on cardiovascular health, as well as overall health. In addition to increasing risk for cardiovascular conditions like heart attack and stroke, lack of sleep may also put people at risk of things like depression, cognitive decline and obesity.

New research in the Journal of the American Heart Association shows maintaining a consistent sleep pattern may play an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease. Researchers found that falling asleep at different times or sleeping an inconsistent number of hours each night, even variations of more than two hours a night within the same week, were tied to developing hardened arteries, known as atherosclerosis. “We know that peo‐ple who get adequate sleep manage other health factors better as well, such as weight, blood sugar and blood pressure,” Lloyd‐Jones said. “The AHA recently added sleep to the list of factors that support optimal cardio‐vascular health. We call these Life’s Essential 8, and they include: eating a healthy diet, not smoking or va‐ping, being physically active and getting adequate sleep, along with controlling your blood pressure and main‐taining healthy levels of cholesterol and lipids, healthy blood sugar levels and a healthy weight.”

Making even small changes in daily habits can make a big difference in sleep quality. Here are some tips the AHA recommends: Make healthy living a habit: Eat a balanced diet, get regular physical activity and manage stress to support a healthier night’s sleep. Set the alarm – for morning and night: Stick to specific times to go to bed and wake up each day and commit to a consistent sleep schedule as much as possible. Along with a wake‐up alarm, try a bedtime alarm to in‐dicate it’s time to start winding down. Establish bed‐time habits: Once your bedtime alarm goes off, move into a familiar ritual, like brushing your teeth, washing your face or taking a warm bath. Relax and unwind: Take a few minutes to de‐stress, consider reading, jour‐naling, meditating or listening to music to ease into a good night’s rest. Take a technology break: A bedroom free of light and technology will equate to better sleep, so keep your phone and other devices away from the bed. Try logging off your electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime. Getting to sleep can be tricky for some people, however, sleep supplements should be used sparingly, and only under the advice of a health care clinician. It’s also very important to consider the possibility of a sleep disorder like sleep apnea or in‐somnia. These conditions can increase a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke and should be treated ap‐propriately to improve the quality and duration of sleep, as well as overall health.

would’ve given Penn the lead. Later in the postgame press conference I asked Princeton Coach Mitch Hen‐derson about it. I could tell he didn’t like me saying a foul should not have been called, but he tipped his hand by saying, “Keeshawn Kellman drew the first charge of his career.” At 6 feet, 9 inches and 240 pounds Kellman is imposing and not easily knocked down. As Spinoso spun to score the shot Kellman rolled with him and fell. Once the referee blew the whistle Penn would never score again. Princeton won 77‐70. They moved on to the Ivy League final and beat Yale 55‐48 on Sunday March 12th. Both games were close and won by 7 points. As I turn this in Princeton is still dancing. They went on to beat Ari‐zona 59‐56 on March 16th and Missouri 78‐63 on March 18th. At press time, Princeton was set to play Creighton in Louisville on March 24th. The Ivy League Tournament got them ready for their miracle run.

I covered the Albany regional March 19‐21. In the first game on Friday March 19th St. Mary’s Col‐lege from Moraga, CA beat Virginia Commenwealth University 63‐51. Iona played UCONN in the second of four opening round games that Friday. Iona’s Coach Rick Pitino said in the post game press confer‐ence, “the first half was just about as well as we played all year.” Iona led 39‐37 after the first half. In the press conference after the game I asked Coach Pitino, “I thought they won in the second half in the first two minutes and you called a timeout to stem the tide…was there anything you could have done to have beaten them in this game?” Pitino answered, “Well, we had their best player 0‐6 on the perimeter in the first half. When they ran that curl play, that stagger play, our five man didn’t hedge out, and we worked on that all week, and that was a big play. And you’re right about the two minutes.” Iona lost the sec‐ond half 50‐24. The final score was UCONN 87 Iona

POETRY FOR MERI

LAST STOP

You are the end of the day. The last train out of the city. You are the long ride home. The last stop.

63. On Tuesday March 21st Rick Pitino held his first news conference as St. John’s head coach at Madison Square Garden. In the next game in Albany on Friday March 19th Miami would have to rally from trailing by 8 points with under four and a half minutes to go to win. They beat Drake 63‐56 on the back of a 10 point scoring run that ended with 11 seconds left. Miami’s full court press won them the game.

Next up was Indiana playing Kent State. Indiana won 71‐60 in the nightcap of the four games from the Albany first round. These games set the stage for Sunday’s second round of the Albany Regional. UCONN handled St. Mary’s well, especially in the sec‐ond half. After leading by one at halftime they outscored St. Mary’s 39‐25 in the second half and won 70‐55. As I left the court between games on Sun‐day the Miami players were getting ready to go out for their game against Indiana. The winner would ad‐vance to the Sweet 16 in Kansas City, MO.

I took the opportunity to speak with Jordan Miller. I mentioned the time earlier this season at Mo‐hegan Sun Arena when a zoom question came into the press conference and his coach Jim Larranaga was confused about who was asking it. I chuckled when his Coach said, “I don’t do well with zoom ques‐tions.” When I looked up at the podium Jordan was smiling at me. Coach Larranaga is old school. Jordan and I laughed about it in Albany as we spoke in front of the big March Madness Bracket that shows the teams advancing as games are played. I asked Jordan about playing with two Mt. Vernon players, Greg Cal‐ixte and Jason Douglas‐Stanley, when he was at George Mason. Then I pulled my fleece vest open to show the Mt. Vernon Basketball shirt I was wearing. He couldn’t have been nicer. I also noticed how loose the Hurricanes seemed before playing Indiana. I asked Norchad Omier how his ankle was feeling after I had learned it was injured and they weren’t sure he could play in the Drake game. He responded that it was fine. I knew then Indiana might be in for a long night. Final score Miami 85 Indiana 69. As we go to press Miami is getting ready for the number one seeded Houston Cougars, Friday March 24th.

You are the other side. The across the street. You are the around the corner. The top of the stairs.

You are the door that opens. The clothes on the chair. You are the bed in the darkness. The blanket pulled up to the chin. My whole life, I have been trying to reach you.

No guess I know with certitude it can’t be touched with finger or mood. It does not flip but is presupposed to the linear time now composed.

Simultaneity is a mime

In mind perceived but declined by time.

The presence of endless time and space was an act of kindness and of grace.

For all those who doubt the truth today try focus on time from first to stay.

Question and understand why the when I will take from naught to now to then.

There are those who declare and deny and will question the creation why.

Shackled to the senses and reveal all that is unconfirmed is not real.

They call time a depository of bland dream and a finished story.

They point and say beginning to end There is only birth and the descend.

Time has no departure tacit clear. It has no effect but to be here.

Joe & Klyph’s Excellent Jam at TAUK @ Trails End

Got the Monday Blues? Well, after months of advertising a Monday night music event “Joe & Klyph’s Excellent Jam”

at TAUK @ Trails End, we finally remem

bered to give it a try. Knowing that Joe and Klyph are talented, we truly expected it to be great. Yet, sitting at the bar, enjoying some drinks and dinner, [The BBQ ribs, kale Caesar salad with grilled shrimp, and the crab stuffed fish special were splendid.] we were entertained beyond our expectations. Dare I compare the vibe to a Manhattan club Jam Session with multiple musicians stopping in and joining for a song or two, or five…

Each Monday music aficionados, along with some lucky uninformed dinner guests, have been gathering to see a variety of the East End’s favorite musicians show up to jam with Joe Delia, Klyph Black, Greg McMullen, and James Benard. It’s a chance for the rock ’n roll, jazz, reggae, and blues people to play different genres, unrehearsed, with colleagues they don’t usually play alongside. The talent is exceptional, and the performances epic.

It’s a been a real dancing, rocking, listening respite each week at Tauk, to see/hear, who/what happens next. The night we were there, Joe, Klyph and James were joined by a minimum of five other musicians. Some of the artists that have jumped in include Mama Lee, Brad Penuel, Winston Irie, Johnny Blood, Lynn Blue, PJ Delia, Sarah Conway, Chris Ripley, Steve Tekulsky, Josh LeClerc, Denny McDermott, Andrew Winthrop, Wil

liam Lucey, Annie Trezza, Job Potter, Brad Beyer, Dalton Portella, Jim Lawler, Jeff Levitt, Bruce Beyer, Joe Haines, Kat Chaffin, Dave Portocarrero, Nan French, Doug Broder, Jed Feldman, John Cooper, Betsy Bambrick, and more.

PJ Delia sums it up like this “Montauk, East Hampton Township, and Suffolk County are blessed to have a really generous population of musical talents. The Joe & Klyph Ex‐cellent Jams (‘JAKE Jams’) entices them out of their own houses to play together with others, where they inspire and surprise each other. There have been some epic mo‐ments.”

For a magical evening of music, you won’t soon forget, check out “Montauk’s worst kept secret ‐ Joe & Klyph’s Excellent Jam ‐ every Monday, 7‐10pm at Tauk @ Trails End, 63 S. Euclid Ave., Montauk. No Cover. Food and Drink.

Meet Anthony Desiato...

4. Can you describe the technique you use in recreating houses?

Some houses I create right out of my head. I just start out with a line and go from there.

Others, like the Seven Sister Houses, I have them open in a photo program that I have on my taskbar and I'll click back and forth to look at it as I recreate it.

Another technique that works well is Google Maps. I'll use the roadside tool, basically, just take a virtual drive down roads and find a house that I’d like to draw. It's perfect that way because you can choose the angle. I've virtually been in Cape Cod, Finland, Ireland, Scotlandand a few other places in Europe. If I'm going to draw a random house I always change it around. I may put a chimney on it if it doesn't have one, add steps going up to a porch, extra windows, fewer windows, etc...

5. How long did it take you to master the mouse as a paint brush? I know you were left handed and needed to train you right hand to take over.

I kind of trained it as I was going along...that's why my houses havw improved over time. It's not like I was great at drawing with the mouse with my left hand either. Drawing with a mouse is just plain old not easy. I've been incorporat ing a lot of stones in my work. That was something...learning how to draw rocks and stones from nothing. Fading...it's more of a trick than a tool...and it brings things to life, in my opinion.

6. What program

do you use to “paint” your houses?

In the beginning I was just using MS Paint and my mouse. Now I use Lunapic. It’s not very much different than MS Paint, except the lines are smoother. I draw the house, any type of sidewalks, gardens, driveways... I have drawn the grass and sky, but in most cases I “Google” the background and just drop my house on it. Remember, I use just a basic low profile mouse. I really don't think anybody else is using

Ditch Plains Saltbox Just a few blocks to the ever popular "Ditch" beach and conven-

this type of procedure I use. Believe me, I've looked around, I have really no choice because I can't hold anything like a computer pen stylus. I spoke with the gentleman that devel oped Lunapic and I sent him a few of my houses. He could not believe I drew them in his program because it's geared for photos.

First off I draw the shell of the house...the "frame." That takes me a day or so...8 hours maybe, and I wait until it's perfect. Then I start on the siding and the roofing and all the detailing. It could take me anywhere from a week to a month to draw one house.

7. Do you have any plans for a next project? Name something you’d like to report on...LOL. Actually, I been working on a rendering of “Second House.” (Are you listening Montauk Historical Society?)

8. Is there anywhere, besides here, the public can view any of your creations?

Yes, Andrea, the Historic Librarian at the Est Hampton Library has published my Seven Sisters drawings in ‘Digital Long Island.’ (https://www.digitallongisland.org/)

9. Would you like the public to contact you? Yes, of course! E mail me at tbone9574@gmail.com

Shingle style cottages for wealthy New York City families' summer use, designed by McKim, Mead and White within a site plan designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1881. In 1976, the district included nine buildings deemed to be contributing to the historic character of the area, and two other contributing sites. It is bounded on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the hamlet of Ditch Plains, and on the north and east by marsh and scrubland.[2]

It includes seven large Shingle style homes that, to‐gether with a clubhouse and other supporting buildings, comprised the Montauk Association, and which were built during 1881–1884. The Montauk Association as an entity no longer exists. The district also includes the sites of two former buildings of the Montauk Association, a community laundry and a community stable, which remain as arche‐ological sites. Another former building, the casino and clubhouse of the association, was burned in 1933 and has been replaced by a modern house, the Tweed House. An‐other modern house, the Wright House, stands separately to the northwest of the complex of cottages. There are also several small sheds and garages which are unobtrusive and do not unduly detract.

The seven cottages are: Agnew Cottage, Benson House, Sanger House, Hoyt House, Andrews House, de For‐est House, Orr House (Tick Hall)

All seven were designed by McKim, Mead and White and are placed carefully in the natural landscape, conform‐ing to a site plan designed by landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted (You know...the Central Park designer). They were placed into the natural landscape and linked by path‐ways, leaving the natural landscape mostly undisturbed.
