INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 325°. Grease and flour a 9x13 baking pan.

2. Peel and chop your Apples. I find 2 medium sized Apples (any variety you like, I used Honeycrisp) gives you about 2½ cups). I also chopped them into different sizes. Some small (about 1/8 inch by 1/8 inch) and some larger (about ¾ inch by 1/8 inch). The smaller pieces will “melt” into the cake and the larger ones will remain for you to bite into.

3. Using a liquid measuring cup, pour your Buttermilk to the 1 cup line. (Alternately, measure 1 tblsp. white vinegar in the bottom of the measuring cup and then fill to the 1 cup line with plain whole milk and stir together). Then, pour your Oil into the same measuring cup until it reaches the 1‐1/3 cup line. Add your 1 tsp. Vanilla and whisk together. (Doing it this way saves you a bowl to wash.) Put aside.

4. In a large bowl, whisk together the Flour, Brown Sugar, Baking Soda and Cinnamon, being sure to break up any lumps in the Brown Sugar.

5. Pour the liquid ingredients into the flour mixture and mix until combined.

6. Fold in your Apples.

7. Mix the ingredients for the Streusel Topping together.

8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the Streusel Topping evenly over the top.

9. Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

April 2024

There will be a Mercury retrograde on April 1, 2024. It's going to be entirely in fiery Aries. This means we should be cautious as it may lead to fights, irritability, and frustrations. However, we can focus the extra energy pro‐ductively and take the initiative with something we want a second chance at. It's also an excellent time to focus on clearing out and cleaning up, which will help us make room for our goals and clear our path over the next week.

There will be a New Pink Moon on April 8, 2024. There will also be a Solar Eclipse in Aries. Eclipses affect us for up to six months. This eclipse in the sign of Aries is focused on matters related to personal plans, courage, independence, and self‐assertion in solid focus. It's an opportunity for new beginnings regarding any of these issues. Long‐term changes are in the works!

There will also be a Full Pink Moon on April 23, 2024! It's said that during this time, people who are

ready to take responsibility for themselves and their ac‐tions will be favored by the powerful energy of the full moon. It's a time when nature blooms and is filled with bright colors, and optimism is everywhere. However, act‐ing carefully and avoiding dishonest methods is essential, as emotions can run high and lead to foolish mistakes. During this period, people become especially sensitive and able to predict the development of events. It's a time to compare desires and opportunities and not to over‐think things.

Aries (March 21 – April 20) — Happy birthday Aries! Exercise can be a powerful tool to heal and stabilize. Re‐member that competitors are always looking for an op‐portunity to take advantage of any misstep, so it's important to always listen to your better judgment. Even when your enthusiasm is high, try to find a middle ground and compromise this month. Instead of wasting time arguing your point, focus on finding solutions. Given the current slow economy, it's natural to be more con‐cerned about finances than usual.

Taurus (April 21 – May 21) — Trusting your intuition can be valuable in making decisions. Take the time to lis‐ten to your inner voice, especially when navigating your career. Learning from your past experiences and mis‐takes can help guide you toward the right path. However, be mindful of a former love interest who may reappear. It's essential to approach the situation with caution and an open mind. Knowing when to move forward and hold

back can be crucial in your personal and professional life. Gemini (May 22 – June 21) — You'll be busy with many business tasks for the first few days. To avoid arguments with your loved ones, try remaining flexible if plans don't go as expected. Mercury will be retrograded from April 1 until April 25. Expect some delays and communication issues. However, the weekend will be a blast if you keep cool. You can expect heartfelt appreciation and romantic rewards if you're in a relationship. Someone you care about might show you special attention if you're single. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) — Your primary focus should be consistently achieving your goals. Don't hesi‐tate to change something if it is not working as expected. It's time to inject some fun and joy into your life this week. Consider inviting the person you're interested in for some old‐fashioned fun. Love is in the air, so pay at‐tention to your partner and treat them with romance. Ad‐ditionally, be mindful of your finances.

Leo (July 23 – August 23) — Remember to prioritize your loved ones this week rather than focusing solely on your desires. Be mindful of your needs and priorities during this time. If you feel introspective over the week‐end, take advantage of the opportunity to clean and or‐ganize your home, cook a delicious meal, or enjoy your favorite films. If you're single, consider looking within your inner circle for potential mates rather than attend‐ing high‐pressure events. Remember not to judge others based solely on their appearance.

Astrology Outlook...

Continued from Page 15

Virgo (August 24 – September 22) — Others perceive you as independent, but you also require appreciation. Your personality traits include creativity, assertiveness, and impatience. There is a possibility of career growth in your future. It would be beneficial to be free to do what you want; however, clingy individuals make you uncom‐fortable. Your partners can both distract and inspire you. Try to avoid being dragged into a wild adventure. The only way to broaden your horizons is to try new things. You may face minor frustrations but have many good things to appreciate. If you are not in a relationship, that's perfectly fine.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) — You have extra free time in your schedule! Please take advantage of it and enjoy the surprise. This week might be intense for you, especially if you have a significant other. If your part‐ner is neglecting you, speak up early in the week. The weekend is also a good time for communication, so if it is to be addressed, you'll have another chance. If you're single, Friday and Saturday will be your most exciting days. Don't be afraid to let your personality shine and show off your sense of humor. Send a smile to your secret crush and see if you can catch their attention.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) — It may seem the easiest solution to throw everything away and start anew. However, you can consider using a thrift shop or a charity auction to benefit others instead of doing that. Keep in mind that different people have different ideas of what is valuable. This week, take some time to exam‐ine your own needs. Remember, helping others is a great way to help yourself. If you're single, you may want to use your skills to assist a friend or a new partner. Don't hes‐itate to ask many questions, but try to reserve your opin‐ions. You'll learn a lot about the people you're interacting with during the process.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 22) — You are incredibly generous and have a knack for coming up with great ideas, which makes you very popular. You possess multiple talents and are capable of providing practical assistance to those in need. However, it's important to re‐member that you don't have to achieve everything all at once. Start with small steps, and gradually work your way up towards your goals."

Capricorn (December 22 – January 20) — Your work skills are on point, and your creativity is admirable. When you're confident in your abilities, taking bold steps comes naturally. You will feel great regardless of what you do. If you're in a relationship, consider spending an evening dancing, taking a stroll in your favorite park, or trying a new sport together.

Under his leadership, the Society’s programs experienced significant growth in both global impact and prominence. Prior to joining National Geographic, Terry was Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere for the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Deputy Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He also served as NOAA’s General Counsel from 1994 to 1996. In June 2010, he was appointed by President Obama to serve on the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling where he investigated the root causes of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and made recommendations on how to prevent future incidents. In 2011, he received Peru’s highest civilian award, La Orden del Sol del Peru, for his role in helping repatriate a collection of ancient artifacts taken from Machu Picchu in 1912. Terry is currently president of Exploration Ventures, a company that provides strategic advice and counsel to global clients in a range of sectors.

Hamptons Observatory extends its deepest thanks to Mr. Garcia for generously taking the time to share his expertise, and to co‐host East Hampton Library for their kind collaboration.

Tillandsia air plants suspended within an orb to create a floating effect. The plant‐based outfits are delicately made of colorful liv‐ing material, such as elegant blue‐green dresses of Huperzia, pas‐tel rosettes of Echeveria, and delicate Spanish moss. The scene sets the stage for the exhibition and begins the orchid‐dotted journey through the Conservatory’s verdant Lowland and Upland Rain Forest Galleries. There’s an orchid diversity display along the way and later, a tunnel of lights where visitors can strut their stuff as if walking the catwalk.

More ways to be fashionable at The Orchid Show: On‐site ac‐tivations and ongoing public programs include “Orchid Basics” Q&A opportunities at NYBG Shop on weekends and Wednesdays, plus “Meet the Orchid Experts” and “A Treat for the Senses: Sen‐sory Table” on select dates in the Conservatory, providing more chances to learn about these marvelous flowers and engage with them through ouch, smell, sight, and even sound. The NYBG Gar‐den Shop provides a multitude of top‐quality orchids, from exotic, hard‐to‐find specimens for connoisseurs to elegant yet easy‐to‐grow varieties for beginners, along with orchid products and books for purchase. Remember Easter is coming as well as Mother’s Day, so the NYBG gift shop might be the perfect solution for that hard to shop for person on your list! L ATVIAN CULTURE AND THE NAME DAY CELEBRATION

Have you ever heard of a celebration called Name Day? I first learned about this tradition when I became friends with a co‐worker, Mara, who is Latvian. Through our friendship with Mara and her husband, we were invited to family holiday celebrations and learned about their culture. Birthdays are celebrated by Latvians, but an added holiday is Name Day, which is also celebrated in many European countries and Latin America. For instance, it is celebrated in Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Hungary, Spain and the Czech Re‐public, to name a few. This tradition goes back to the Middle Ages and originated in the list of holidays cele‐brated in commemoration of saints and martyrs of the church. The Latvian calendar lists about 1,000 names a year with the date of a person’s celebration. More modern names have been added that might not have a saint’s name and the list is updated every few years.

The reason I am writing about this topic of Latvian cultural traditions is because of a text I re‐ceived from friends that we met over thirty years ago when they visited New York. Through Mara, we met a young man, Olaf and his mother, Viktorija, when they came here on vacation from Latvia. We’ve kept contact ever since on subsequent visits. I was happily surprised when Olaf’s text to me on Feb‐ruary 26 was a message from both him and his mom remembering me on MY Name Day! I didn’t even know I had one!

Latvian “Name Day” Card

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) — This month, you may experience a sense of withdrawal, mainly if you are not fond of being in crowded and noisy places. It's es‐sential to avoid feeling obligated to attend events that you would rather skip. Remember, if your friends truly care about you, they should also respect your need for personal space.

Pisces (February 20 – March 20) — There are height‐ened emotions around you, so it's essential to be extra cautious when communicating to prevent tempers from flaring. Take the time to mend any damaged relationships

The spelling, Evelina, was slightly different, but it was my special day! Such a nice tradition and it is popular for the person to celebrate his or her day by bringing snacks to work for co‐workers to enjoy. The co work‐ers might give the Name Day person flowers, a small gift or some sweets. If it is a school child, the student might bring in candy for the teacher and classmates that day. Basically, this is a chance for people to have two celebrations reminding them how special they are!

One of the best things about meeting some‐one from a different background is that it opened a whole new world of information for me. I wasn’t famil‐iar with the Baltic countries and learned they consist of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. Riga is the capital of Latvia and it sits on the Baltic Sea and boasts many museums and concert halls. By the way, when men‐tioning concert halls, Latvians love to sing and are world famous for their song festivals that take place every five years with over 40,000 attendees from around the world! The city of Riga consists of pre‐served wooden buildings, medieval Old Town and art nouveau architecture to explore. There are so many in‐teresting facts about Latvia like their flag is one of the oldest in the world, after Denmark’s, which is the old‐est. The Latvian flag is easily recognizable as it is all red with a white stripe down the middle. Speaking of the country, more than half of Latvia is covered by forests and is known as one of Europe’s greenest coun‐tries. Citizens are allowed to legally cut down a tree in the forests for their Christmas celebration! Here’s a lit‐tle known “factoid” about Latvia is that they invented jeans. A man named Jacob W. Davis, born in Riga moved to the U.S. in 1854 and designed a strong pair of trousers for a customer. These durable pants were so popular he went to his fabric supplier, Levi Strauss Company, for monetary backing and the rest is history. His distinct orange seam, still in use today was his trademark. Now see how much you’ve just learned about Latvia!

with kindness and care. Your significant other will sur‐prise you by doing thoughtful things to help you escape into a dreamlike state and remember why you fell in love. Consider getting a babysitter if necessary to have some alone time together. You'll understand why you need this by the weekend when your energy levels are high, and you're ready for a night out in town.

Alternative April Moon Names:

In April, Moon names reference spring abound! Break‐ing Ice Moon (Algonquin) and Moon When the Streams Are Again Navigable (Dakota) reference the melting ice and increased mobility of the early spring season, while Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs (Tlingit) and Moon of the Red Grass Appearing (Oglala) speak to the plant growth that will soon kick into high gear.

Other names refer to the reappearance of certain animals, including Moon When the Ducks Come Back (Lakota), Moon When the Geese Lay Eggs (Dakota), and Frog Moon (Cree). Along the same vein, Sucker Moon (Anishinaabe) notes the time to harvest sucker fish, which return to streams or lake shallows to spawn. Ac‐cording to legend, now is the time when this fish comes back from the spirit world to purify bodies of water and the creatures living in them. (This name may also be ap‐plied to the February Moon to honor the sacrifice of the sucker fish to feed the Anishinaabe peoples, tradi‐

The Library

I look to thoughts for comfort, a thirst for knowledge, I couldn't quench. I venture to fulfill, I venture to learn, a need to ponder, a need to unclench.

I stand at the door a Library great, with endless shelfs, of endless books.

I am excited, my thoughts elate, stained glass windows of gods of morn,

I float through corridors with bliss, finally a place to call my own, gifted as my own abyss, A place I yearned for ages since born.

Covers and covers of beautiful books, spiders hidden within the nooks.

I ignore the silver cobwebs, I get drunken off the sight. I skim page after page, thoughts encaged by knowledge’s plight. Finally, a place to quench, or extinguish my own unknown, a place to learn, a place to think, for what can I atone?

The hands of gods reach my mind, with malice, fingers of scalpels and razors. They don't like my presence, it seems because I never joined their praisers.

Yet I continue on, reading books like a river flooded by a domineering dam.

The moonlight trickles through stained glass, and I’ve joined the stargazers again.

Years gone by, and I remain here in this Library great designed. I've learned all there is to know, learned all there is to define. But when I try to leave, I then realize I’ve been confined. The beautiful doors remain bind, because the Library is my mind.

A full Moon in April brings frost. If the full Moon rises pale, expect rain.

On April 20, 1972, the lunar module of Apollo XVI landed on the moon with astronauts John Young and Charles Duke aboard. Thomas Mattingly remained in orbit around the moon aboard the command module.

One day later, on April 21, 1972, Apollo XVI astro‐nauts John Young and Charles Duke drove an electric car on the surface of the moon. It’s still up there, along with some expensive tools and some film that they forgot.

According to folklore, the period from the full Moon through the last quarter of the Moon is the best time for killing weeds, thinning, pruning, mowing, cutting timber, and planting below‐ground crops. Read more about Gardening by the Moon.
