August 2022 There will be a Full Moon in Aquarius on August 11, 2022. This Full Moon, the Sun in Leo, creates conflicts with the Moon in Aquarius. All Full Moons are a time when everything explodes with the promise of fulfill‐ ment that starts at the New Moon. It is an emotional time of romance, fertilization, and relationship growth. The Leo Sun is noble, and they tend to be intense in‐ dividuals. They are not satisfied with simply being like everyone else. They need to be the pack leader, the head wolf. This New Moon is a fantastic time for us to develop some goals regarding "all things Virgo."We all need to "Set Our intentions ."The New Moon in Virgo is an excel‐ lent time to commit to personal goals. Everyone has Virgo somewhere in every person's chart. These are the areas of our lives most affected now. It's a powerful time to transform our jobs, health, self‐care programs, and habits. BEACH FIRE: An outdoor fire burning wood materials other than rubbish on a beach where the fuel being burned is not contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, barbecue grill or barbecue pit and has a total fuel area of 30 inches or less in diameter and 24 inches or less in height from natural grade for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes. All beach fires must comply with the regulations contained in § 14119. Any beach fire that exceeds the parameters herein or of § 141-19 must comply with § 141-17. BEACH FIRE REGULATIONS:The following regulations shall apply to all beach fires within the Town of East Hampton: 1. Beach fires shall not be started or maintained less than 50 feet from any beach grass, vegetation, tent, fence, building or permanent structure, nor within 100 feet of any lifeguard stand. Should there not be enough beach to comply with the fifty-foot setback, the location of a beach fire may be reduced to 25 feet from any beach grass, vegetation, tent, fence, building, or permanent structure, but in no instance may a beach fire be located less than 25 feet from any beach grass, vegetation, tent, fence, building, or permanent structure. 2. Beach fires shall only burn whole, natural wood. No chemically treated wood, or painted wood or wood containing nails, nor wood or plastic pallets shall be used.

Even though it was almost three dec‑ ades ago and pre‑internet as we know it, this cult and others still exist. Why do you think that is? Everyone needs community and friendships. When these are lacking or not fulfilling, or when we lack self‐esteem, we can be vulnerable to predatory people like cult leaders and hucksters and abusive spouses/situ‐ ations.
True to cult form, Schneider’s ex‐ perience included being “broken” emo‐ tionally, sometimes physically through hard labor, simultaneously praised and berated to provoke fear, guilt and mar‐ tyrdom for the good of the leader and the group. Most striking about Manhat‑ tan Cult Story are the members; highly educated finance managers, account‐ ants, physicians, attorneys, professionals we think should be too savvy to ever join a “cult.” From a neurological perspective, “brainwashing” over time is when the brain’s emotional processing starts to take over while the critical thinking (“what am I doing here?”) becomes numbed, allowing the follower to be controlled. As social beings we need to belong as it is necessary to our survival, and cult‐like tactics take advantage of our very human nature. We were appreciative to have the opportunity to ask Spencer Schneider a few questions about exposing the cult, and why it is important that we pay at‐ tention to this story. What is the most consistent question you are asked about the book? How is it that an educated, successful person could get sucked into a cult? That question seems to be what draws readers in. Are you surprised by anyone’s reaction to reading it? I was surprised how deeply impacted readers have been, telling me about traumatic experiences having nothing to do with cults. I was also surprised that the grown child of a former leader who I never knew reached out to thank me for speaking out. And I’m thrilled that
People hear ‘cult’ and probably say, ‘that would never happen to me.’ What do you say to that? I would tell them that I didn’t realize I was in a cult until 23 years plus the day after I got out. What can we all learn from this? I hope people can see that cults and mind control and group think are serious and pervasive problems which are not iso‐ lated to crazy people living in some com‐ mune in northern California. Everyone can fall for mis‐information, hoaxes, and cons. And everyone can be gaslighted. Indeed, almost half of this country be‐ lieves that the 2020 election was stolen. But I also want to spread the word that there is hope because people can escape from abusive situations and not only re‐ cover from trauma but come out stronger for it. What has been the most challenging part about writing this? To explain what I liked about being in the group. Most of my memories were bad, painful. I had to dig deep to remember what I liked about being in this group for 23 years; what was the attraction? What was the most rewarding about it? I’m thrilled beyond words that the book was published. I never dreamed it would be. But now that it has been, I’m pleased that I can possibly help others.

MONTAUK’S BEACH CREATURES... Continued from Page 13 non‐poisonous snakes. Sometimes a strong odor would have you believe there is a skunk in the area. Actually, it is a fox urinating and "marking its territory". It's a male‐ to‐male notice, "this is my girlfriend, stay away", to explain in a simplified fashion. Footprints or tracks for each animal differ. A fox walks in a straight line, one foot after the other. A dog's foot prints wander, one here and one there. Deer tracks are larger, with an adult about three inches and a fawn much smaller. Is a deer run‐ ning or walking? Which direction was it going? If you see a wide gap in the center of the sandy foot print, this gap shows it was running. A narrow gap would be a deer walking. Taking a nature walk around the Montauk Lighthouse can also feel like a member of a Lewis and Clark expedition making new discoveries! Continuing along the sandy trail, you’ll start to notice various vegetation. There are wild grapes, whose vines twist and wrapped around any brush or small trees in its path. Beach plum bushes, with their tiny lavender blossoms lead the way to a small look out mound, perfect for a "photo opportunity". Fishing boats are off the coast, bobbing in the distance, and gulls could be seen swooping and diving into the water feeding on tiny off shore fish that swim in shallow water. In early spring, seals come to the area and can be seen sunning on exposed rocks when the tide is low. Coming off the small hill, you will walk until a small bend in the road that leads directly to "Money Pond". Legend has this name derived from the adventures of Captain Kidd. Back in 1699 he landed at Montauk and it's believed he buried his treasure in this area. Yet to be found, it makes fascinating trivia for history buffs and visitors to the Point, especially since there are several popular television productions featuring this same topic of finding buried treasure in different parts of the country and around the globe. Money Pond is filled with tall reeds which are not native to this area. Probably from Africa or Eurasia, the reeds had taken over the pond and thrown off the balance of nature. The plants and animals that used to live in the pond were crowded out by the reed’s extensive overgrowth. Now no lily pads, fish or herons or egrets live here. With no fish to eat, the birds don't come to the pond. This problem is one that arises from introducing plants to an area they don't grow in naturally. Leaving the pond, walk closer to the shore line, especially when the tide is low, to expose moss and seaweed covered rocks, with mussels attached to them. Blue mussels, the kind attached to rocks and are easier to sight when low tide. Mussels are pretty low on the food chain and survive by eating plankton that floats by. In turn, mussels are eaten by raccoons that come down to the beach at night. Mussels are a popular food choice for a variety of creatures. Even the moon snail has a unique way of dining on a mussel. The snail gets on top of a mussel shell, then se‐ cretes an acid to soften the shell. Once softened, the snail "drills" a tiny hole in the mussel shell to extract its insides. Another amazing technique to dine on mussels is what starfish do. The starfish wraps its five "legs" around the mussel, attaching to it with the tiny suction cups beneath its legs. With an open mouth, the starfish can send its stomach directly into the crevice of the mussel shell, thereby digesting it while it is still in its shell! The ways of nature are sometimes more bizarre and unbelievable than any science fiction story created by imaginative writers. Clams can be found in Montauk, but in more sandy beaches, buried below the surface. Oysters also like rocks, but not water that is too salty. They like "brackish water", which is a combination of fresh and salty water. Oyster Pond, further in island, is the perfect home for oysters because it is salt water, but fed by many fresh water streams. Besides other forms of entertainment while visiting Montauk like swimming, fishing, boating, golfing, take time to comb the beaches and learn more about the beach creatures that share the environment with us. Before any animal is released, NYMRC staff provides vari‐ ous types of tags that help identify these individuals during fu‐ ture sightings. All released marine mammals and sea turtles receive a tag with a specific ID number which is attached to the hind flipper for seals and sea turtles and on the dorsal fin for cetaceans. One type of tag that provides important information are called telemetry devices, which include satellite tags. NYMRC can attach these devices to released candidates to help further understand their behavior post rehabilitation. These satellite tags allow us to track the animal’s movement pattern and pro‐ vide insight on what these animals do once they have been given a second chance at life.
