Steven had promised himself when he came back to New York that he would just say hello at the party and nothing more. It had ended badly the last time and the time before.
He clinked his glass against hers and began, “You’re right. Let’s not think too much. I was the one who left. If you want to be with me, that is enough.”
Julianne Rolenska did not know he had come back. She did not expect to see him coming through the door on the seventeenth floor, the Christmas party, the jubilant greetings from all their friends.
When he looked at her now, her short black hair and violet eyes, he did not want to lose her again.
“Why did you come back?” Julianne asked.
Steven Morris had left for Texas over a year ago. So easy to spot, white haired, always taller than everyone else.
They reached 49th Street and Steven asked the driver to pull in front of the green awning of Smith and Wollensky Steak House, the small, boxy, white building, out of place among skyscrapers, green-trimmed and Christmas wreathed as if it were gift wrapped.

When she saw him, she turned her head away. It was not until Julianne was leaving, swiftly putting on her long camel coat and Hermes scarf, joining the crowd of office revelers cramming into the down elevator, that Steven suddenly stepped in beside her before the doors closed. And she found herself sitting next to him in a yellow cab heading uptown on snowy 3rd Ave in the holiday traffic, he also dressed against the winter night, long black overcoat and grey scarf. He had caught her off guard. Looking out the cab window at the Christmas crowded sidewalks, she waited long to begin. “It never gets easier,” she said, unsmilingly, “only quicker.” She touched the cab window with her gloved hand. “Over and done and you start again. You can get accustomed to anything, and lies taste like candy after a while.” “You smile and think, this is who I am and if love is a lie, then that’s okay too.” “And you, Steven? Now that you know, what do you want me to do?”

He stood on the snow drifted sidewalk and offered his hand into the cab. “Come on,” he told her. “Let’s get a bloody steak for Christmas.” Entering Wollensky’s, a portly waiter in a white coat greeted them. “Well, well, nice to see you again, Mr. Steven, Miss Julianne. Merry Christmas! This way!” He led them through the crush of revelers at the bar to a booth in the side room and instinctively put two glasses and a bottle of Remy Martin on their table. “You’re a gem, Harry!” Across from them, a mirthful table of businessmen singing carols who curiously looked like Russian bears. Julianne, who was born in Russia, felt at home. Steven leaned forward and laughed. “It’s not Christmas, Julianne, till you come to Wollensky’s. It’s snowing again.” “In Siberia,” she said, “it snows so hard, they eat the trees, make pine cones into jam.” Taking her first sip of Remy, she reminded him, “You didn’t answer my question. Nothing is not an answer.”

“It’s Christmas,” Steven replied. “There was a party. It is hard without you.” “I am going to marry Kevin Simpson,” she said stiffly. “Who’s he? Another fiancé? The one with the limp at the party?” “He was in Afghanistan,” she said, offended. “He’s a partner at Goldman’s.” The white aproned waiter made his way back to their table with a large silver tray, balanced on his left hand, high above the clamorous crowd. He placed two rare steaks and two iced gins in front of them. “All the yearning,” Julianne said, “doesn’t change who we are. This also will end.” “Then we’ll see,” Steven said, “how far we go.” After a while, Julianne put on her coat and scarf. “Where are you taking me?” she said. That Christmas Eve, a blizzard blanketed the City for three days. When Julianne and Steven left Wollensky’s, they walked, bracing against the snowfall, up 3rd Ave to Julianne’s apartment on 74th Street. Steven did not go home until the snow stopped three days later. Years after, gathered for Christmas Eve, in the apartment on 74th Street, both remembered for their friends, how they got back together again. They blamed it on the gin at Wollensky’s and the endless snowstorm, but that was not the truth.
