ASTROGRASS

Jordan Shapiro (guitar/vocals) • Hannah Read (fiddle/vocals) Jonah Bruno (banjo) • Tim Kiah (bass/vocals) Bluegrass interpretations of folk songs from Long Island's maritime past, collected by folklorist/ archivist Stan Ransom in the 1960's and arranged by Jordan Schapiro. Excelling in traditional bluegrass, Celtic and Appalachian mountain music, Astrograss brings new life to a set of newly arranged remarkable songs that capture the spirit of Long Island’s unique history and maritime environment. Additional funding is provided through a grant NYSCA/Creative Communities Grant program as administered by the Huntington Arts Council. Multi-Instrumentalist Jordan Shapiro formed Astrograss in Brooklyn, NY in 2003. He has composed songs for the band’s 3 full length CDs, and led the band on national appearances at festivals such as South by Southwest, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival and NYC venues such as Brooklyn Academy of Music and Symphony Space. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music, Jordan also performs the folk music of the Balkans on accordion and keyboards, leading the band Choban Elektrik at dances and festivals throughout the Northeast. He also leads the 7-piece sea shanty brass band "Shapiro's Shanty Shakedown". Jonah Bruno grew up a family of bluegrass musicians in Woodstock, New York and studied banjo with the legendary Bill Keith beginning when he was in college. In 2010 he released his first solo album, Spokesman, a title referencing his profession in public relations. He also writes music for Astrograss and has played in the band since 2005. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two sons, who share his love of bluegrass and the banjo. Born and bred in Scotland and now residing in Brooklyn, Hannah Read is a versatile musician, widely recognized on the International stage. She is known for her fiddle playing, singing and songwriting and was recently described as one of "the finest singers of the day" in the UK's MOJO Magazine. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Hannah is an in-demand musician who has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Tim Kiah studied bass with Ron Carter at City College. A registered nurse, he formed a string quartet called Nurse Kaya. The ensemble performed in hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons. Tim tours internationally with Roy Nathanson, an Avant-Garde Saxophonist and Poet. He has also collaborated with such artists as Deborah Harry and Lenny Kravitz. He has been aired on NPR and the BBC, and has also performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He is a member of the Chelsea Symphony Orchestra, which features his Symphonic Works. ________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, July 13 at 7:30 pm. Karen Jolicoeur, soprano Hillary Schranze, soprano Mimi Stern Wolfe, pianist Songs, Duets & Solos for voice & piano composed by May Aufderheide, Erwin Schulhoff, Mira J Spektor, Mozart and Gilbert & Sullivan. Karen Jolicoeur was recently featured in the Composers' Concert of the Musician’s Club of NY. Hillary Schranze appears in the wellreceived film of the opera, Villa Diodati. When pianist Mimi Stern Wolfe revived music by Czech composer, Erwin Schulhoff, who died in a concentration camp during the Holocaust, the NY Times music critic Corinna Fonseca - Wollheim, praised her “lucid performances of six short works” including “an erotically wily tango and blues number, seemingly filtered though the lens of French Impressionism, as well as an ironic waltz.”Return engagement. When he was eleven years old, he auditioned for Motown Records founder Berry Gordy. Upon hearing him play, a dazzled Gordy announced, “Boy! That kid is a wonder!” and the nickname stuck. ily he begins the long road of recovery. A chance meeting with Kate, who is described by producer Michael Lawrence as being in her own “emotional wheelchair”, and the two became inseparable. That’s where Taylor and Lorenzo come in and spend the next four years traveling back and forth to Australia taping Barney and Kate’s story as it unfolded. Speaking with Ronnie Montemarano and Paul Monte, Taylor’s parents, they couldn’t be more proud of their daughter’s dedication and determination for getting this story told. In addition, Michael Lawrence filmmaker, producer and studio owner spoke of the duo a bit like a father affectionately calling them the ‘Young twenty- something American Filmmakers’. The pair had been maxed out financially so once again they reached out to friends who got in touch with Lawrence, who after sitting with them and hearing and seeing what they planned, was in. “When Lorenzo and Taylor came to me with YOU and ME - I said yes immediately. Barney and Kate’s love story and their life and struggles will resonate with global audiences. I am very proud to be a part of it and help get their message out into the world.” At the opening Michael told me that he made the film for his daughter, saying “I want her to look up to Kate.” Kate’s own struggles start in her childhood as the mixed-heritage child of a young mother who got pregnant while away on vacation. She never fit in with the other children in their small town, and despite the love and support of her mother and step-father, life became overwhelming for Kate who hit rock bottom and eventually moved away to start over. At the same time Barney was dealing with his own physical and emotional struggles also hitting bottom with depression and too much partying. The two meet, fall in love and eventually together become the support they each need to pull through and set goals. She being his physical and he being her emotional rock, Kate’s dream is to be a singer and Barney works to not only surf again, but he’s determined to stand and dance with Kate at their wedding. The film weaves you through the ups and downs of their lives dealing with each trying situation as it unfolds. With the help and support of loved ones, Project Walk, the innovative work of Neurophysics Functional Performance trainer Ken Ware, and close friends including 3X World Champion surfer Mick Fanning, eventually Barney is back surfing, fundraising for others with spinal injury through the Barney Miller Surf Classic, and the Wings for Life World Run and is working towards his ultimate goal – to walk, run and surf standing up again. Viewing the film on a lovely June evening at the Surf Lodge- at its LI debut with the filmmakers, Taylor’s family and friends as well as the cast- was an amazing experience. This story is told from the perspectives of Barney and Kate, as well as their friends and family; through a combination photographic flashbacks- on site unfolding reality moments- and interviews, all arranged with a score of songs sung by Kate. This documentary engulfs you into the reality of the story experiencing their internal struggles through each raw, emotional, and even uplifting interview until the feelings and struggles of the subjects become personal; at different times throughout the movie I found myself and others around me wiping our eyes at the pure emotion. Student Summer Film Workshop by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel

If there is a young student in your household that enjoys making home videos, going to the movies or has expressed an interest in filmmaking, then this is a summer program you will want to look into. It’s a wonderful way to tap into the artistic creativity of our young students! HIFF’s Student Filmmaking Workshops give students the opportunity to make their very own short films! Created by HIFF’s very own Executive Director, independent film producer Anne Chaisson, workshops are held in both East Hampton and Southampton. The workshops give students ages 8 to 15 the opportunity to make their own short films, which are then showcased on screen for family and friends. Here are the details from HIFF: This year, we’re holding two Summer 2016 Workshops! Guild Hall, East Hampton: July 18-22 Southampton Arts Center: July 25-29 2 Strands: Introduction to Filmmaking, ages 8-11 Intermediate – Hands-on Filmmaking, ages 12-15 Over the course of one week, students learn the skill of screenwriting, directing, acting, producing and editing, with instruction and hands-on experience from industry professionals. The short films are showcased on screen that Saturday for students to share with family and friends. Each student will take home their very own copy of all the short films created. Montauk in the 1920's built the Montauk Manor, the office building in town, the golf course, the yacht Club, Tudor style homes and even a Tudor village for the workmen in anticipation of a summer playground for the elite. During this time in Montauk’s history, the Trails End eatery opened in 1927 and was originally on the bay near the old fishing village. [At one point it was won in a card game.] Much of the old village was destroyed by the hurricane of 1938; the building survived but was moved to its present spot. For years the Trails End Restaurant has been known for family-style American comfort food in a friendly atmosphere with reasonable prices. Now the oldest restaurant in Montauk has now been sold, and as this new chapter in the restaurant’s history begins the new owners are incorporating updated styles of both décor and fare while keeping some of the charm and history alive. Michael Nasti and Steven Paluba have teamed up on their venture of creating a new ‘TAUK’ of the town. They’re offering simple elegant food with indigenous product and sustainable local fish. Michael Nasti and his wife Colleen have been enjoying Montauk since the early 90’s when they would summer for a few months each season. Eventually that expanded to April through October. Now as their children are older and involved in school and sports, they have transitioned to summer life in Montauk including being part of the Montauk baseball team, swimming for the E. Hampton YMCA, and being a junior Life Guard at Ditch. Interstate trucking is Michael’s business and along with his family’s shift to ex-

tend their Montauk life, he was looking for investment property here in Montauk. Working with a local Real Estate he came across the Trails End- asked Steven Paluba if he’d be interested in going in with him as Partner/ Executive Chef- Steven and his wife, also a Colleen, agreed- and the rest is history. The two families met six summers ago while enjoying a Montauket sunset; they became friends instantly. The Nasti’s quickly became fans of Steve’s culinary skills and frequented Steven and Colleen’s Café at Atlantic Terrace. Eventually Steven was asked to be their Chef for many events and charters on the family’s boat. So when Michael thought about this new restaurant venture his obvious choice was his friend Steven, with his talent, experience, and potential. Steven is an accomplished Chef who has had an appearance on Hell’s Kitchen and has an excellent reputation here on the East End. He’s catered for celebrities and high end clientele, as well as catering weddings and local clam bakes that people line-up for year after year. While interviewing Steven about the new restaurant, he said, “The key virtue in my Kitchen is consistency. I want my customers to enjoy a dish and come back 2 years later and enjoy the same taste.” Ensuring the best quality, the team has been hands on throughout the entire

New Montauk Observatory Under Construction

The Montauk Observatory group is constructing its permanent professional grade astronomical observatory at the Ross School, adjacent to the Tennis Center, where it often hosts lectures on astronomical topics. The observatory will house its 20” Meade telescope and be available for use for free to schools and professionals for remote viewing and research. It will also work with the Ross School to enhance it science department. The new observatory will be the only professional facility of its kind on the South Fork of Long Island, enabling it to take advantage of the dark skies available in the area, which are some of the best in the country for astronomical viewing. The non-profit educational group has been operating for close to 10 years in the East End, and hosts a lecture series and star parties in various locations, including Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton and Southampton. Working with several NY colleges and universities, including Stony Brook, Columbia and Suffolk County Community College, as well as the American Museum of Natural History, teachers, authors and researchers from these educational institutions present the lectures.
