Young at hearts who were born in May were Evelyn Walles, Robert Mulligan, Eugene Klausman, Nolda Vivo, Edna Neuer, Joe Baradi (my brother) and yours truly. Iris (Chicky) Aster and my sister Perla Spanskie were missed. Some of us wore red, white and blue, the colors of the USA flag, to honor and remember the women and men who fought and died in the armed forces while serving our country so that we can enjoy the freedom that we often take for granted. Even the delicious, strawberry birthday cake was patriotic, decorated in red and white for the Memorial Day celebration, courtesy of Executive Director Sharon Sennefelder. From the look of the tables filling up, one can tell that the snowbirds are back in town for the duration of the summer. Finally, the perfect weather of sunny days and cool nights that Montauk is known for has also arrived. There’s plenty of activities that are held at the center from chair yoga, to meditation, to health programs provided by East Hampton Town, to bingo, cards, dominoes and mahjong. HIFF Summer Doc Series 2019 by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
As part of the Hampton International Film Festival (HIFF) each summer a series of documentary features are shown throughout the Hamptons. During the summer months HIFF continues showing unique films in East Hampton through its SummerDoc series. In addition this summer’s offerings, there are a host of free outdoor screenings that include a popular adventure film, classic musical and an animated film. The first of the series, MAIDEN, was held in June and featured a post screening conversation with Alec Baldwin and Alex Holmes, the film’s director. The story is about yacht racing and an all women crew. In 1989, the very idea of a competitive all-female sailboat crew was nearly inconceivable to the manly world of open-ocean yacht racing. They’d never make it to the start of the Whitbread Round the World Race much less survive to the finish. They’d never find funding. They didn’t have the strength or skill. They’d die at sea. Did that many female professional sailors even exist? Tracy Edwards proved them wrong. 26-year-old skipper Edwards, her second-hand racing yacht Maiden, and her seasoned crew not only became the first-ever all-woman challenge to the Whitbread, they proved able competitors in the famously grueling race, besting male crews in their class. By the time they returned to their starting point at Southampton, England, after 32,000 miles of global racing, they had shocked, inspired, and transfixed the sailing world and the British nation. Tracy Edwards was awarded the 1990 Yachtsman of the Year Award, the first woman ever to receive the accolade, and was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire. COLD CASE HAMMARSKJÖLD – Guild Hall in East Hampton, will host this screening on Saturday, July 20th, at 7:00 pm. The film is directed by Mads Brugger. Tickets are $23-$25 each. In 1961, United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane mysteriously crashed, killing Hammarskjöld and most of the crew. With the case still unsolved 50-plus years later, Danish journalist, filmmaker, and provocateur Mads Brügger (The Red Chapel, The Ambassador) leads us down an investigative rabbit hole to unearth the truth. Scores of false starts, dead ends, and elusive interviews later, Brügger and his sidekick, Swedish Göran Björkdahl, begin to sniff out something more monumental than anything they’d initially imagined. In his signature agitprop style, Brügger becomes both filmmaker and subject, challenging the very nature of truth by “performing” the role of truth seeker. As Brügger uncovers a critical secret that could send shockwaves around the world, we realize that sometimes absurdity and irony are the emboldening ingredients needed to confront what’s truly sinister. Free July Screenings. The Southampton Arts Center at 25 Jobs Lane is the location for a series of free outdoor screenings. The films begin at approximately 8:30 pm when it’s dark enough for viewing. July 5th Friday – Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, directed by George Lucas. (Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire’s world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.) Continued from Page 31 humor and a chatty format, like hearing from a favorite uncle sharing his knowledge. He spoke how his book Wild Bill came about as basically a follow up to his highly successful Dodge City that came out in 2017. Since that book was an instant best seller, his publisher asked for another “western themed book”. Clavin had been intrigued by Wild Bill, whose real name was James Butler Hickok, and thus began research into his life. As he wove the story of what he learned and shared various details about Hickok’s life, it was easy for the audience to also be captured by the spell of this hero of the old west. Without giving away too many details of the book, Clavin shared that Hickok was from a New England family who were abolitionists and helped with the Underground Railroad. They even used their children to go for rides in the buckboard to pretend to be on the way to the general store, but secretly were transporting runaway slaves under piles of hay across state lines to safe havens. From a young age, Wild Bill was used to danger and became a great marksman, able to shoot with either hand. He even placed his gun handles in the holster backwards so he could cross shoot, reaching over to either side when needed. Leading a fascinating life from joining the union army in 1861, two years later becoming a spy for them and joining the confederate army to obtain their mission and attack secrets, to his years after that as a federal marshal he had an action packed life. He was a friend of contemporary Buffalo Bill Cody, who also copied the dress style of Wild Bill, complete with shoulder length hair and buckskin clothing. When Hickok was let go of his marshal duties when the government said he was no longer needed because ‘the town was safe”, it was Cody that offered him employment. Being let go was sort of ironic as it was the legend of his fast draw that kept ‘the bad guys” away from his town and the residents safe. Cody offered him a job in a “wild west play” reenacting the old west for Eastern audiences and he accepted it, since he needed the income, which paid much more than a life threatening job as a marshal. While the pay was lucrative, Wild Bill became disenchanted with being on stage and this life style and returned to the west he loved. Throughout the talk Mr. Clavin dotted the lecture with fascinating tidbits about the old west and Hickok’s life, bringing to light the background of one of the old west hero’s. As Mr. Clavin spoke it was easy to imagine this book being made into a film starring any one of the young popular stars of today that could do justice to Wild Bill as this new book describes. His books can be purchased at the Montauk Library, in book stores or online.
