1. Frank lifts his healthy pool winner. 2. May 5th Fluke trip. Petrillis catch 15 for dinner. 3. Bob’s first Striper of 2013. His tally was 4 keepers that day. 4. Linda reels a Striper towards the net. Extra men scramble to help!! 5. We cut a couple of gill rakers and put the fish in water to bleedout, making for a white meat. 6. Sue, down from Buffalo, to fish as usual, with her first Striper of 2013. 7. Dennis, mate on the Blue Fin IV, fillets Mother’s Day Stripers while a truck burns by Four Oaks deli in the background.
Fishing Montauk with Capt. Skip Finally the cold weather has broken, the water temperature is warming up, and with that comes the onset of the Spring Run. The Fluke are very active right now with plenty of bites to be had. The relaxed size limit of 19 inches for this year is helping a lot more anglers to go home with their supper. The bait is showing up more every day. Squid strips with Spearing always seem to fit the bill, but with the abundance of early small Bluefish around, don't be afraid to cut some Bluefish Fillet Strips. Most of the action has been on the "Backside". The south side from the Turtle cove area (just west of the Lighthouse) west to the Cottages. Try to set up your drift to take advantage of the wind and tide. A drift with wind against tide will be disappointing. If your looking for Blues and Striped Bass the Ebb Tide at the Elbow has been red hot. When the Birds make up, launch those Diamond Jigs. Also plenty of Stripers on the Rips as well. It's been a long cold winter, so get out there and enjoy the warmer weather and great spring action. Tight Lines, ~ Capt.Skip “Adios” 4 ~ June 2013 ~ The Montauk Sun

Striped Bass and Fluke Arrive as Scheduled by Capt. Michael Potts May 1. It was cold for May. On land it would warm up a fair bit by mid-day, but with the water temperature hanging in the upper 40's, out on the ocean we were dressed in our March fishing best. We had heard that the Hurry Up had caught 3 Stripers a couple of days earlier, but this group prefers to bottom fish. You could still call it decent Fluking for May 1 as 4 anglers kept 11 Fluke over 19 inches out of about 50 caught. The commercial rod and reel boats were getting their 140 allowable pounds most days (with a 14 inch minimum). Our next good trip was May 5 with 15 keepers up to Frank's 5.5 pounder. The blues moved in right about then and there were birds from the Elbow thru to North Rip. A couple of boats scratched out a few Stripers each day out of the ferocious bluefish schools. Around May 14 a few boats went out, the blues had all but disappeared, and those that were out had a Striped Bass bail-job. At the same time there was a nice increase in the Fluke keeper ratio. Here we are: the fish are on schedule.

Striper Bass on the grill recipe: You can try putting the meat on the grill directly as you would do with Tuna, but this method is tricky because Striper can flake apart. Wrapping in foil diminishes the effect of a hot grill. Striped Bass scales are like armor. Leave the skin and scales on the fillet in lieu of foil; the meat would be way overcooked before the scales burn. Place skin side down. Cut down to the skin on each side of the center line. Start at one end and pull out the strip of red meat and bones. You can put crab, lobster or vegetables in this cavity. Score the thickest parts of the fillet. Rub a little olive oil on top and in the crevices that you created. Quite a few different spices work here: Rub in crushed garlic, chopped sage, chopped parsley and/or cajun spice, pepper, chives, thyme or whatever you like. Place skin side down in the pre-heated grill and close the top. Depending on your grill, check in 15 to 20 minutes. If it has turned white in the center, it is done. You might as well sprinkle a shot of white wine on it at this point. If the center is still clear, 5 more minutes should do it. Use a spatula to take the fish off the skin while it is still on the grill. A little sea salt and a few drops of lime juice can be sprinkled on while it is still vulnerable. I've got to go outside and get mine off the grill now.

Beach Etiquette Keeping Them Clean by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel It’s that time of year we have all been waiting for so patiently, beach time! After a long and harsh winter, the seaside beckons us even more. So gather up the family, invite your friends and enjoy the fabulous Montauk beaches and park areas! However, don’t leave your manners and “beach etiquette” behind in your rush to head out for a day at the beach. This subject came up recently as we strolled on the beach and began chatting with a few people we met on the way. Some were year round residents and others were ones that had summer homes that are visited seasonally. It was early spring and we were all enjoying the pristine beach before us. In the midst of discussion about the past winter and how much everyone looked forward to the summer coming, the topic of “how some people treat the beach” came up. Whether on a beach in Montauk, other Hampton spots or in travels to any vacation destination where beaches are the focus, these suggestions also pertain.
Litter It is simply amazing to see the trash that is left behind at the end of the day when the sun is setting and beach goers leave to go home. We have seen glass bot-

Add to this discarded broken umbrellas, beach chairs and children’s sand toys merely strewn all over the beach. What surprises me is that all the beaches have a lineup of trash cans in the parking lot area and can easily be disposed of there. To see these items scattered along the beach demonstrates how lazy and sloppy some people can be. Continued

One time a few years ago my husband and I were sitting on our blanket after having a swim and a few young teen boys walked passed us about 30 feet in front of us. There were about four of them walking by, laughing, nudging each other and having a fun conversation as they walked close to the water line. Two walked slightly ahead and the others lagged about ten feet behind when suddenly one boy in the rear took his glass soda bottle and smashed it against a rock protruding from the water! The rock was in about five inches of water, where toddlers or preschoolers usually play. My husband saw this and was outraged. He immediately jumped up and shouted over to the boys telling them, “You had better pick up all that glass you just broke!” The boys were startled by his anger and immediately stop to do it, with the other three helping out the culprit. They were as surprised at this bystander’s reaction to their dumb action, but did what they were told. Imagine later in the day what would happen if a small child ran to the wave line to play and stepped on shards of broken glass? These teens should have known better than to do a thing like that in the first place, so they deserved to be publicly chastised. Continued on Next Page

Beach Etiquette... Continued from Previous Page
Dog owners This has to be a very strong ‘second gripe” with many beach goers when they see droppings left behind from a visitor that came previously with a dog.
8 ~ June 2013 ~ The Montauk Sun
There is absolutely an etiquette when you walk the beach with your dog and many beaches have rules and regulations that MUST be followed. Some beaches require leashes at all times. Many beach areas restrict dogs from coming onto the beach at certain hours, which is quite understandable. But ALL beaches have a required “PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG” rule, which you think pet owners would already know on their own. They don’t. Some beaches have containers where plastic bags designed for pet
waste are offered complimentary. We bring our own bag just in case these dispensers are empty when we arrive. No special bag is needed, just any plastic bag from bread or groceries will do fine. During our chat with the people we met on our walk, which by the way all had dogs, they shared their frustration over this topic. Each had seen beach walkers with their dogs watch the pet relieve themselves and the owner did not bend down to pick up the waste. Some might pick up the waste with the plastic bag and then LEAVE it on the beach and not drop it in the trash container by the parking lot. Mind you, if you point out that the pet just littered the beach and asked the owner to pick up, they often get irate with you, one gentleman related to the group. One lady in the group said she had a way of approaching the subject that I thought was a great idea. She always carries a few extra pet waste bags with her on her dog walks, more than her pet needs. When she sees someone’s pet litter the beach and the person does NOT pick it up, she will walk over and politely say, “Oh, I guess you ran out of waste bags to pick up after your pet. Here is one of mine you can have to do it.” What a perfect “non threatening”, fairly friendly way to let the person know he/she is expected to pick up any waste on the beach. From now on that is what I plan on doing, too when we walk our dog and see an offender not picking up after a pet. These beaches belong to everyone and it is everyone’s obligation to keep them clean. Picking up your beach litter and dog litter will ensure all of us of having a beautiful, pristine and inviting beach to come to this summer! Thanks for doing your part to make it happen! Happy summer everyone!

Schneiderman: ‘Discover Parks Day’ Will Attract New Patrons for County Tuesday, May 7th, at the Suffolk County Legislature’s general meeting, the Legislature unanimously approved Legislator Jay Schneiderman’s (I-Montauk) legislation to cut county parking fees in half on Thursday, June 27 in an effort to attract new parks patrons and boost revenue for Suffolk County. The legislation designates the day as “Discover Suffolk County Parks Day”. “In these challenging economic times, many county residents are staying on Long Island instead of vacationing elsewhere during the summer months,” said Legislator Schneiderman, “and there is no better place to enjoy the natural beauty of Long Island than our vast network of parks. We have thousands of acres of parks offering spectacular beaches, beautiful woodlands, camping, fishing and a huge variety of other activities for Long Island residents. What better way to offer residents an introduction to the pleasures of our parks than to offer them a discounted admission fee?” Under Legislator Schneiderman’s pilot program, on June 27th, 2013, parking fees at County parks will be reduced to the discounted Green Key fee, which is approximately one half of the normal fee. The County’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation is directed to publicize “Discover Suffolk County Parks Day” via the departmental website and through press releases. Representing the South Fork, Jay Schneiderman is the Suffolk County Legislator for the Second Legislative District.

Insightful Impressions Astrology Outlook
Virgo (Aug 24 – Sept 22) — Communication difficulties and delays are not your fault; so don’t blame yourself. You can change yourself and attempt to influence others. Follow through on all paper work this week. A Romantic gesture helps to restore a love relationship. Enjoy the moments with wit, and jokes. Be willing to make commitments. You can enlighten others through the spoken and written word, and make money doing so while helping others. Think about making a career move during the months ahead.
by Francine Tesler
Gemini (May 22- June 21) — Happy birthday Gemini! It's hard to restart after you've come to a complete stop. It's better to have something you can push against instead of loosing your focus. You'll find plenty of compassion in others if you share your concerns. Seek out people with common goals for lasting fulfillment. Anything else is selling yourself short. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) — Dance in the spotlight. Don’t hide in the shadows. Spend time with friends. It's a good time to evaluate what you want from a lasting relationship. Patience is a virtue. Change is in the air. Focus on problems at hand, and look to resolve them. Stop centering your attention on just what you want for the moment. Do what it takes to achieve your goals, without hurting others. Honor yourself and you will improve your self-esteem. Consult others before making major decisions. Your lover surprises you over the next couple of days. Leo (July 23 – Aug 23) — Continue to follow your gut feelings. You have the ability to sway the thinking of others. Your words paint pictures of a better tomorrow. Step back and wait to see where the cards fall before making any major changes. Your calm manner and intellect pacifies a family matter. Try to work quietly behind the scenes on new projects before the end of the week.
Libra (Sept 23 – Oct 22) — Romantic partners may make unexpected choices, and surprises can be good. You make a sexy connection with a mysterious stranger. The more energy you put out, the more you have. Financial problems can be avoided if you are willing to be gutsy and determined. You may feel happy to have escaped a restrictive situation. Keep in mind that at this moment you are also vulnerable. Be careful about what you agree to, otherwise you may find yourself in an equally confining situation. Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21) — Varying your routine will ease your stress over the next few days. You are self-motivated, but could be giving the impression that you don’t need assistance when you do. Try not to close yourself off to friends and lovers. Friends and lovers share your highs and lows. If your relationships are unsteady, consider making a stronger commitment to them. Feelings are stronger than you realize. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 22) — A spicy romantic situation may not be as wise as it is enticing. Romance may be on the horizon. Keep a positive attitude and do not let self doubts get the best of you. A wrong attitude will have you looking for love in all the wrong places. Having a confident attitude and a relationship with commitment is likely to follow. This can be a moody time for you. Take a step back and you will find your middle ground. Use your extra energy in group activities. Your self image is shifting before your eyes. Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 20) — A shakeup at work has everyone wondering whether they will have a job or not. This may be a good time to explore other job opportunities. Using a lighter approach to express you feelings makes it easier for others to listen.

June-love is the word of the month. June is often thought of as the month when two people who love each other dedicate their lives together in marriage. But, there are other kinds of love that may be our fortune to experience. If you have any comments or poems please email me: larryspiro@aol.com. Include permission to publish if you are so inclined.
Bride by Lawrence Spiro Love lays bare her gallant heart to him. He approaches carefully and touches her, together now and forever in light or dim. They proceed together, all is as it seems. He looks up to her, he echoes his plea. His time moves instantly into Spring yearning that she will set his heart free. Nestled in his hand is love’s eternal ring as rose petals glisten for the dancing bee. She answers the question to all these things with hand extended, excited for this, she says yes. He laughs, they embrace and kiss. They exchange injoy words worth singing. With beating heart, he trembles with joy. She smiles musing of this new beginning knowing now stands a man once a boy. Taken, He has no thoughts of speaking about summer then fall leaving dour. She was taught about all the seasons all the promises and all the reasons.

Gunner By Tatum Albrecht Even though he is not with me today, Forever in my heart this puppy will stay. For every time he gave me a kiss, It’s that puppy breath smell that I will miss. He made me laugh, he made me cry, If only I could give him one last kiss goodbye. This puppy made me stronger from inside and out, Boy do I miss that brown and white snout. Now I know to savor before it’s gone, Because as I know now it doesn’t last long. But as I get older, I realize something more, You have to see the little things to open that joyful door. That day I found out that he was gone, I thought that something had gone wrong, But nothing happens by mistake, So this sorrow I must take. This puppy made me stronger, In my heart he will live on longer.

ARF Animals of the Month LIBBY: Eight year old Libby was looking for food on the streets of East Hampton when a Good Samaritan found her and brought her to ARF. This beautiful cat is very affectionate and sweet. She is in excellent health, inquisitive and happy. Who will give her a second chance to enjoy the last half of her life in a wonderful home? CATALINA: This one year old, 9 pound Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix was rescued from a kill shelter in LA. Between her floppy ears and her slight under bite, you can’t help but fall in love with Catalina. You will need to go slowly with her at first as she is still learning to trust humans, but once she bonds with you she is a playful lovebug. She gets along well with other dogs and is crate trained! She would do best in an adult household.

June welcomes us all and welcomes also the return of our migratory summer food dishes. Bluefish, fluke, striped bass, and yellowfin tuna will soon fill fishmonger cases across the East End. While this column professes to be a cooking column, we will be focusing our attention on raw fish and the preparation of sushi at home. Use only the freshest fish you can find. Cooking the rice can take some time. It is advisable to do your knifework during the cooking of the rice. Assemble all the ingredients before attempting to roll the sushi. Also, make your rolls some stime before you will be eating them as they will benefit from some resting time in the fridge before service. Serve with wasabi, ponzu, spicy mayo, and friends. Good Stuff!
The RJA Memorial Mighty Montauk Triathlon will be Celebrating its 31st Anniversary Long considered the east end season opener, and is one of the longest continuous races on Long Island, the RJA Memorial Mighty Montauk Triathlon features a very scenic course through the beautiful hamlet of Montauk. Dear EarthTalk: Now that hot weather is coming, I want to upgrade my home’s A/C. Which are the most energysaving models and should I go central air or window units? ~ Jackie Smith, Cary, NC According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE), energy consumption for home air conditioning units accounts for more than eight percent of all the electricity produced in the U.S., at a cost to homeowners of $15 billion annually. Besides the cost, all this cooling leads to annual emissions of about 195 million tons of CO2—or two tons per year for each American home with A/C. Of course, foregoing A/C entirely is the most energyand cost-efficient way to go, but some of us need a little cooling for comfort, especially in warmer climates. If A/C is a must, buying the most efficient model is the way to save money and pollute less. Fortunately, a new generation of much more efficient room and central A/C units means that upgrading will likely pay for itself in energy savings within just a few years. The main factors to consider in choosing a new model are cooling capacity (measured in British Thermal Units, or BTUs) and Energy-Efficiency Ratio, or EER. To determine the correct BTU rating for a given space, multiply the square footage by 10 and then add 4,000. Meanwhile, a given unit’s EER is the ratio of cooling output divided by power consumption—the higher the EER, the more efficient the air conditioner. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, national appliance standards require room air conditioners to have an EER of 8.0 to 9.8 or more, depending on type and capacity. Units with an EER rating of 10 or above typically qualify for the federal government’s ENERGY STAR label, which appears on especially energy-efficient appliContinued

ances. Check out the ENERGY STAR website for lists of qualifying A/C models. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) says that the average EER of room A/C units rose 47 percent from 1972 to 1991. To wit, replacing an older room unit with an EER of five with a new model with an EER of 10) would result in a 50 percent energy cost savings associated with A/C. As to whether room units or central A/C makes more sense, it depends. Room units, which only cost a few hundred dollars each, will suffice for renters or those who only need to keep one or two rooms cool at a time. Meanwhile, central A/C is more efficient overall at keeping a whole house cool, and will also do a better job at reducing household humidity than even several individual room units—and will save more money faster on electricity bills. But with a starting price of around $4,000 for the condenser and initial set-up (plus any duct work needed to distribute cool air around a home), central A/C isn’t for everyone. ACEEE points out that there are ways to keep indoor space cooler without A/C: improving insulation, sealing air gaps, getting rid of old appliances and light bulbs that give off lots of heat, running fans, using cooler colors on exterior roofing and paint, and other strategies. Those in particularly arid climates might also consider installing a swamp cooler (which cools outside air by running it over cold water) as a cheaper alternative to A/C. By following these suggestions and upgrading conscientiously, we can all stay a little more comfortable in our warming world without exacerbating the problem too much.
Package delivery companies like FedEx and UPS have come a long way in a relatively short time regarding sustainability, but they still have considerable room for improvement. While there is only so much these companies can do to reduce their huge carbon footprints— given their reliance on emissions-heavy air transport—they’ve made great strides in greening their ground fleets, optimizing their choices of modes and otherwise streamlining energy use. For its part, UPS was an early adopter of cleaner vehicles, and today operates upwards of 2,500 low-emis-
sion vehicles that run on alternative fuels and technologies. The company is particularly jazzed about a new generation of hydraulic hybrid package delivery trucks unveiled in the fall of 2012 in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program. These new trucks—which employ a diesel combustion engine along with a hydraulic high-pressure accumulator that stores energy captured during braking—get 35 percent better fuel economy and generate as much as 30 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions as compared to the non-hyContinued on Page 47

Dear friends I am sure you have seen the little booklets that you find all over town called “On Montauk” – it’s neat, isn’t it? It has a lot of information, even for us people who live in our beloved hamlet since a long time. We all know these books are around since a few years, and I want to tell you about the girl from Montauk, who came up with this wonderful guide. Carol Macdonald Nye was born and raised in Montauk. A third generation Montauker, all of her grandparents came to Montauk with the Carl Fisher organization in the 1920's, George Sorensen was a carpenter who helped build the Montauk Manor, and Malcolm Macdonald was a marine engineer, who directed the opening of Lake Montauk to Block Island Sound, creating Montauk Harbor. Her grandmother, Blanche Macdonald, was one of the first organists at the Montauk Community Church. Carol's mother and stepfather are the late Edna and Bill Biase of Montauk. After attending Montauk Public School and East Hampton High School, Carol attended the University of Michigan, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and then the University of Missouri, for her Masters of Psychology. Carol settled in New York City, where she worked for the City of New York in their Personnel Department writing and administering civil service exams. She then moved to CBS as a recruiter in their Human Resources Department, and then to BBDO, a large advertising agency, where she became Vice President, Human Resources Manager, in charge of all personnel functions such as training, recruiting, policies, and benefits. Carol then moved to another advertising agency, DDB Needham, as Human Resources Manager, and then to Lyons Lavey Nickel Swift as Director of Human Resources. Carol married in 1986 wonderful Joseph Nye and they have one daughter, Meg. Even though they lived in New York City, they always kept their Montauk ties and spent many summers and weekends in their cottage on East Lake Drive. After trading up their cottage for their Continued on Page 40

BarBecue Safety tipS by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel The easy days of summer cooking are here and barbecue grills are back in constant use. Delicious dinners are simple; just put on a piece of meat or vegetable shish-ka-bob on the grill, add a microwave baked potato and toss a salad. Your meal can be ready in twenty minutes or less. For the more creative, barbecue gourmet, outdoor cooking can be raised to an art form when various marinade sauces and shish-ka-bob specialties are devised. No matter what style your outdoor cooking has evolved to, there is one area that should remain constant with everyone... safety. Continued on Page 41

The Montauk Sun ~ June 2013 ~ 27
Montauk knows how to rock ‘ALL NIGHT LONG...’ MMF13 It was another amazing weekend for
the Montauk Music Festival.
Music, Dancing, Singing…….hundreds of performances all over Montauk!!! On a slightly overcast spring weekend, from the green to the docks, to the point…thousands of visitors, vacationers and locals alike were wowed by the endless talent throughout the festival weekend. The musicians who came from far and near were both talented and professional –they enjoyed Montauk hospitality and gave the town the pleasure of enjoying their varied musical talents. They were able to play for audiences, get exposure, attend a free industry workshop, and enjoy a weekend networking with other musicians trying to break into or further themselves in the music world. Many young performers joined us this year-to name a few- Kayla Stockert, 16 from Sayville; 49 and counting, 17 from Huntington; Bennett, early 20’s from Michigan; Bobby Paltauf, 13 from Connecticut; Tre’von,16 from Virginia; Jillian Ray, 15 LI; Ashley Aston, 18 from Chicago; Rachael Kennedy ,20 from Canada; Ali Isabella, 17 Westchester; Dylan Jennet 16,Sag Harbor; Sara Hartman, 20’s Sag Harbor; and of course our very own Megan Leonardo, 22 and The MONTAUK PROJECT, 20’s from Montauk and the Hamptons-- they may be young, but by the audience reactions to their performances we will obviously be seeing a lot more of them in the future. The Youth of Montauk also rose to the occasion: with the coordination of Gitte Botero and Music teacher Steve Skoldberg, The Montauk School Children’s performances at the Gosman’s Stage on Friday afternoon were tremendous! About ten different Individual and group performers, including a few students from the Hamptons, sang and played instruments for a large audience who were lounging on the grass, enjoying the sunny afternoon at the harbor. On Sunday, the East Hampton High School Jazz Band and Fiddle Club entertained the audience on the green. The spectacular performances of both groups left the audience excited to have experienced our local youth and their abilities- a treat many don’t often get to enjoy! On Friday morning one of the festival performers, the O’hAnleigh group from Vermont, was welcomed to the Montauk School where two second grade classes enjoyed a demonstration of various unique instruments and some traditional folk music. The smiles on their faces showed how much fun they were having, and the music the children performed on the instruments throughout the workshop was wonderful. Also on Friday, we presented a free industry workshop for the performing musicians at Gurney’s Inn. The attendees listened to and solicited advice from the panel which included: Lou Plaia Co-Founder of ReverbNation, Ariel Hyatt, Founder of Cyber PR, Cynthia Daniels owner of MonkMusic Recording Studio in East Hampton, and Randy Nichols President of Force Media Management. Topics covered included: how to know where and how to get gigs, booking agents, the importance of attending festival type events for networking and workshop opportunities, and the impact and value of Social Media. We were also able to give a few groups the opportunity to do some fund raising during the Saturday and Sunday performances on the green. Have A Heart- Children’s Cancer Society, the Montauk Memorial Day Parade, and I-Try youth triathlons all set up tables selling shirts, baked goods, and taking donations for their causes. Many, Many thanks to all of our performers, the sponsoring hotels who patiently dealt with the uniqueness of all the different groups, the venues who made sure they were fed and treated kindly, Laura Mastandrea and the volunteers on the green and around town helping with the tremendous undertaking of moving 96 acts around at all hours of the day and night, and to our Sponsors who help with the daily expenses of running an event of this size.

"We Must Never Forget"
The Montauket...more than a sunset! The accompanying cover shot from last season was captured as we walked up to the Montauket for dinner on a beautiful evening. As we passed through the unpretentious door our immediate view was one of the most sought after sites by artists, photographers, poets, and romantics! SUNSET! Sitting high above Fort Pond Bay, the Montauket - one of Montauk’s most notorious bar and restaurant- offers amazing sunsets and equally amazing cuisine. The eclectic menu choices include a wide variety of appetizers, soups and salads, main course choices from the sea and land, as well as pasta, wraps and sandwiches. Many of the dishes have a West Indian/ Jerk flair offering the diner unique flavor combinations and style. On this particularly beautiful summer evening we were treated to a spectacular sun set and the music of Jettykoon. For appetizers we chose the Baked Stuffed Clams which had a nice clam flavor, and Sautee Sea Scallops prepared with fresh herbs and tomatoes atop a bed of cous cous. They were cooked perfectly, fork tender and bursting with flavor. The portions were so substantial that I could have eaten just the scallops and called it a night. However, we proceeded to enjoy the BBQ Ribs and a special of the evening, Panco Crusted Tuna with Herb Butter. Smothered in Tamarind BBQ Sauce, the Ribs were fall off the bone tender and juicy. The Tuna was seared perfectly, crispy on the outside and rare in the middle, and accompanied by a variety of fresh steamed summer vegetables. Delicious food, great live music, an unbelievable view…… The Montauket – it’s not just for sunset. Open year round! Lunch and Dinner is offered 7 days a week in season, and weekends throughout most of the year. This season, they will opened for dinner the weekend of May 16th -just in time for the Montauk Music Festival- with a partial menu, and with a complete menu beginning Memorial Day Weekend. Live music can be enjoyed throughout the summer and in the off-season [see the entertainment section in the center of the paper for a complete schedule.]

Willie

36 ~ June 2013 ~ The Montauk Sun
In 1982 I worked as a surveyor on the L. B. Meaders, a Brown and Root pipe laying barge in the Pemex offshore oil fields north of the Yucatan. The tower foreman Douglas dipped Skoal, paced back and forth complaining about the air conditioning and telling stories. One of them was about a popular crane operator who got killed in town shortly before I arrived. So years later, I work as a doctor in Montauk and have a number of commercial fishermen as patients. I know what they do ain’t easy and their spirit comes close to a little bit of the wild west. The story of Willie is for them and dedicated to the memory of Eugenia Bartell, who became a friend of mine over the last few years. She seemed to like it. I had to censor the colorful oil field language a little but didn’t change the grammar. From a health standpoint, I guess, the message might be, try not to lose your temper. “Anyway, that’s why that ax handle is hanging up there. Willie played rough, see, and didn’t know his own strength. I kept it up there as a joke for Willie, when he came up to the tower.” Douglas lifted the ax handle from the wall, took a few practice golf swings and said, “He wasn’t that smart but that don’t matter. He had a heart of pure gold, like Magilla Gorilla.” Junior took his boots off the console. “I’d say what Willie gave Bisquet that time was a beating. That wasn’t even what I would call an ___ whuppin.” Douglas said, “That’s right, Junior’s right. Willie gave Bisquet a beating, not an ___ whuppin. When Willie came up to him with his extra pair of boxing gloves, Willie didn’t mean him harm. Willie just wanted to box. Willie liked to box, see, but nobody would box with him because Willie didn’t like to get hit back. But Bisquet didn’t know that when he put on those boxing gloves. Bisquet is one hot headed you know what, pardon me for saying so. And the Barge Captain doesn’t do nothing when the barge is underway, everybody knows that. So the first thing Bisquet does is hit Willie and that’s what made Willie mad because I told you, Willie didn’t like to get hit back when he boxed with other people. So when Bisquet finally went down and couldn’t get up, Willie tells him, I’m going to whup you just a little bit more, Bisquet. That’s what he told him and that’s what he did, just like he said he would. Bisquet took it all personally, see, went straight down to the galley and told Willie he couldn’t have his six fried eggs any more. The barge Captain can’t say that but Bisquet said it.” “He was out of his jurisdiction,” Junior said. “Junior’s right, he was out of his jurisdiction. And all that did was make Willie mad and Bisquet knew that would make Willie mad. Willie always ate six fried eggs on Saturday. Everybody knew that. So Willie started banging both of his fists on the table and he was such a big boy that after about a minute, he cracked the table in two: ‘I want my eggs, I want my eggs, I want my EGGS!’ He banged his fists like that when he wanted something, see. Willie was like that. So when Willie gets on the beach, he was still angry at Bisquet but the federales in town didn’t know anything about Willie or Willie’s six fried eggs so they just shot him. They didn’t know Willie was good people. To them he was just some hot head.” “But boy, Willie sure liked to box, didn’t he? Loved to box. You know that’s why I like heavyweight boxing. I won’t watch middle or light weights fight. I like those burley mothers. He’s hurt, he’s down! That’s what I like to see. I’m like that. I like to get a big drink in my hand and watch the fight.”

When working with the rice, keep your hands damp. This will keep the rice from sticking to your hand. Lay out one sheet of nori wrap. Sprinkle a small amount of water on the nori and spread about ¾ cup of cooked rice on ¾ of the nori, leaving a short flap to help seal the roll. Lay out your garnishes on the rice bed. Raw or seared tuna, cucumber, scallion, avocado, anything goes inside of a sushi roll. Be mindful of the textures and flavors. Take care to offset crisp with smooth and sweet with sour. Tightly roll the sushi and wrap with plastic before setting aside for several minutes of resting in the fridge. Repeat until rice and fish are gone.

BarBecue Safety tipS... Continued from Page 25 The grill Has your barbecue grill been left out during the severe winter months, or did you store it in a protective area? Keeping your grill covered and out of winter elements can increase the life of your equipment. Even during the summer months, and high usage, it is a good idea to have a cover for your grill when it is not in use. Before you use your grill for the first time this season, take some extra time to check the various parts to make sure they have not rusted, worn or come apart since last season. Replace any parts that have malfunctioned to be sure your equipment is in tiptop shape. A friend related a dangerous situation that occurred when she used her propane grill for the first time this season. The grill was turned on, lighted and everything seemed fine. After five minutes she went into the house to get the meat she was planning to cook. When she returned outside, she found the whole grill was on fire! It was too engulfed in flames to touch the dial to turn off the gas and a dangerous situation was at hand. The unit could have exploded if it became too hot with the flames covering the whole grill. The friend acted quickly, picked up a stick in the yard and pushed the dial to "off",
without getting too close to the grill. Then she ran into the house to retrieve the fire extinguisher. Within minutes, the fire was out. When everything cooled down, she was able to closely inspect the grill to see what caused the fire. The whole bottom frame of the gas grill was rusted out. The pipes that contained the gas flow were also badly rusted. Apparently the top of the grill and wooden slats were cleaned, but no further inspection was given to the equipment. The moral of the story here is to inspect every piece of equipment stored over the winter before using it in the summer. This should apply to camping grills, oil or kerosene lamps and any other summer vacation or sport equipment that is powered by electric or fuel. Frequently the dials, controls or metal parts of these units can rust, break or need replacement because of age. Check all controls and replace them if you suspect damage or excessive wear.
Cleaning Up Take extra precaution when cleaning your grill for the first time this season. A popular method is using spray oven cleaners and a stiff wire brush to remove difficult residue. Make sure the Continued on Page 52

The Red White and Blue Smoothie ...a great start to your Memorial Day Weekend Celebration! The trick to this smoothie is to make each fruit and ice combo as thick as possible. I use the bullet to get the best consistency. It will also work well in a blender. Bottom color blue 1 cup of frozen blueberries with as little water as possible. Add water as you go. No need for ice. I like to leave the blueberries whole because they are very sweet to eat when you reach the bottom. Put mixture into glass. Middle color white 1 banana and approx. 1/4 cup water and ice. Blend and add to the top of blueberries. Top Color red 5 strawberries and approx. 1/4 cup water and ice. Blend and add to top....Enjoy! The Art of Love... with Lucia Hi Lucia, I was dating a woman for 1½ years. She kept breaking up with me and finally left me while I was in the hospital. She complained at times maybe I did not give enough compliments, like I was not mushy enough. Then she acted like she wanted money, when she makes more than me. I kept going after her to get her back, but this time she blocked me from her phone and threatened legal action so I stayed away. I almost still want her back but almost not if she has a new guy. I recently started to date a woman from work but she lives in another city. She's always busy working 6-7 days a week as well as OT. How can I get the first woman back and /or how can I get the new one to stay and have a loving relationship? ~ W. Hi W, The issue is not with the either of the women. The issue is with you! Luckily, that’s something you have total control over, if you’re willing to do something about it. A woman can’t be attracted to a man she doesn’t respect and a woman can’t respect a man who runs after her every time she breaks up with him. At the most, you could have “gone after her” the first time, to see if things could be worked out. However, continuing to do that every time she left turned you into a doormat, and women are not attracted to doormats, unless they’re the kind you wipe your feet on. As for the second woman, she’s already in a happy relationship – with her work. Anyone who’s putting that much time into their work usually loves it, and doesn’t want to make time for a partner. The running theme I see is that you’re attracted to women who are not available, which tells me you’re not available. A person who is serious about being in a relationship doesn’t continue to chase after someone who keeps leaving or have a desire to pursue someone who is a workaholic. I would suggest counseling to find out why you’re afraid of intimacy. _______________________________________________ Hi Lucia, I met a very cool guy recently. He likes me too because I'm kind of beautiful. However, he's had a girlfriend for about 2 or 3 years. They're having some problems now but they're still together. I want to win his heart. Is there any way to have his love? Thank you so much. ~ Jill Hi Jill, So, let’s say you’ve had a boyfriend for 2 or 3 years. You’re still together despite having some problems. Then a girl that’s “kind of beautiful” (whatever that means) comes along and wants to take him away from you. How would you feel? Should she go for it? I believe a relationship between two people, whether they are married or not, is a sacred place. Relationships can be difficult enough as it is, without third parties interfering, trying to tear them apart. Besides, if it was possible to “win his heart” while he was involved with someone else, you would always be worried that another woman may come along and do the same thing. If he was willing to go once, who’s to

However, if you are going to try to lure him away while he is with someone else, just remember: What goes around, comes around.

Continued from Page 19 side village in the Hamptons, just over the hill from The Surf Lodge. For the remainder of that summer I worked with them in the warm open air, near the sea, hills, trees, trails, and a home-made garden of organically grown tomatoes, away from the brick and mortar, the heat and hustle of New York City. We went back to nature to find the imaginative circumstances and to live in nature in every sense of the words. After 35 years as a working actor, a lifetime Member of The Actors Studio, private coach, teacher, director, and film producer, in 2006 it was the right time to start recording this work on film. But more importantly, to pass this information and experience personto person to the young and the old; to those who love theater, drama, and film as much as I do. With cameras rolling constantly, physical training, rehearsals, exercises, scene work, readings, and improvs, the next six summer retreats, right up to 2012, became a mini version of a Major Hollywood Studio and a Broadway Theater. We produced our own stage productions in Montauk and New York City, and shot films all over the tri state area as new careers flourished all around us. These summers have also been filled with actual drama, love stories, comedy, and just plain fun recorded on hundreds of hours of now "inthe-can" footage! Founding the Montauk Group has established the structure for my work, allowing me to pass along my astounding fortune and good luck to others. The 2013 Montauk Group Summer Program for Actors and Artists will commence in June. For those who want to explore life through the imaginative circumstances we will be holding intensives for locals and anyone in the Hamptons as well as those who will work on the grounds and reside in the house. These classes are for all levels of acting, experience and skill. Inquiries welcomed. For more information go to

National Theatre Live: A Screening of Helen Mirren in The Audience Friday, June 14 at 8pm “The Audience is going to be one of the theatrical highlights of 2013.” -Daily Mail Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, which reunites writer Peter Morgan and Mirren following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie The Queen. For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents from Churchill to Cameron and their Queen. Directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and presented in the West End by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries. $18 General Admission / $16 Members
Guild Hall and The Hamptons International Film Festival present SummerDocs #1: Saturday, June 15 at 8:30pm Q & A to follow with Host and Special Guests TBA Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film. Running Time: 89 minutes $22 Reserved Seating / $20 Members

They Played in the Game: Artists & Writers Exhibition Saturday, June 15 – Sunday, July 28 Opening Reception: June 15 / 5-7pm East Hampton’s beloved Artists & Writers Softball Game will take to the field for its 65th annual game on August 17th. In celebration, the Museum at Guild Hall opens Artists & Writers: They Played in the Game on Saturday, June 15th. The exhibition features many works from Guild Hall’s permanent collection of artists who have played in the game, along with works that are on loan. The Hamptons arguably represents the highest amount of creative talent per square mile anywhere in the country. The artists and the game they love are a living tribute to our Hamptons legacy as an artist colony. The Artists & Writers Game rich in fabled history, athletic anecdotes, and sometimes an amusing lack of actual athletic ability, could happen nowhere else in America. The show is co-curated by Elena Prohaska Glinn and Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director/Chief Curator of Guild Hall. For information on the Artists & Writers Softball Game, click here. $7 Suggested Admission. Museum Hours: From Labor Day through June 30: Fri & Sat 11am-5pm; Sun noon-5pm and from July 1 through Labor Day: Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat 11am-5pm; Sun noon-5pm (Closed Tuesdays)
Joel Perlman Saturday, June 15 – Monday, October 14 Joel Perlman’s sculptures will be on display in the Frieda and Roy Furman Sculpture Garden, open daily, and the Wasserstein Family Gallery, open during museum hours. Perlman’s sculpting methods are intuitive. He cuts eccentric shapes out of steel — more than he’ll need — then tacks them together again and again. Although welded steel is his medium of choice, bronze, aluminum, and iron also play a part when the situation calls for a variation on the theme. Perlman believes that art must be appreciated aesthetically, but he also encourages observers to interact with the art by touching and moving around it. $7 Suggested Admission. Museum Hours: From Labor Day through June 30: Fri & Sat 11am-5pm; Sun noon-5pm and from July 1 through Labor Day: Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat 11am-5pm; Sun noon-5pm (Closed Tuesdays)

brid diesel-powered vehicles they are replacing. While these trucks may cost UPS $7,000 apiece more than their traditional counterparts, the company estimates the upgrade will save $50,000 or more, while substantially reducing emissions, over the lifetime of each vehicle. UPS has also been blazing new trails in operational efficiency via intermodal shifting, e.g., using the most fuel-efficient transport mode (airplane, train, truck or ship) or combination of modes to meet customer needs. A concerted effort by the company to streamline its operations in 2011 led to savings of two million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by moving delivery volume from air (the most emissions-intensive mode by far) to ground, and another 800,000 metric tons by shifting volume from ground to rail. Meanwhile, FedEx, with one of the largest hybridelectric fleets in the industry and upwards of 2,000 alternative energy vehicles in service worldwide, is no slouch either when it comes to green streamlining. Back in 2008 the company worked with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) in setting the ambitious goal of improving the fuel efficiency of its worldwide fleet of Express delivery vans and trucks by 20 percent within a dozen years. Then early in 2013 the company announced that it had already exceeded its goal seven years ahead of schedule (with an overall savings of 22 percent so far) but was also upping its goal to a 30 percent fleet-wide efficiency gain by 2020. With a strong commitment to swapping out older vehicles with newer more efficient ones, the company is well on its way. It now operates 360 hybrid-electric trucks and 200 electric vehicles and is replacing many of its delivery trucks with “right-sized” Sprinter-type vans that are as much as 100 percent more fuel efficient than their predecessors. FedEx has also been upgrading its fleet of Express diesel trucks to cleaner-burning models, and is making similar upgrades in its Freight and Ground
divisions as well. Likewise, the company is well on its way toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its airplanes by 30 percent by 2020. “Cheap Fish” A Review by Kimberly Esperian
The title conjures up questions of what this story could be about. Then the picture on the cover: The infamous Donny D'Albora as a little kid at the weigh-in dock at Montauk Marine Basin. Classic. Then the author: The lovely Nanci E. La Garenne writer extraordinaire. I had to read this book! Open to the prologue - cool, I got a feeling I know what this book is going to be about. I know the guy, I know the situation, then... CHAPTER 1: Ok, kind of not what I was thinking... CHAPTER 2: Hmmm, definitely NOT what I was thinking... CHAPTER 3: OMG!!! Is this story for real??? How could it be? In this small town, surely I would have heard at least a rumor! For anyone who has spent time at the docks and has gotten to know any of the famous Montauk characters inside of Liar's Saloon, this book keeps you interested as it twists and turns. One minute you think you know a character, next minute, not so sure. One minute you think this story could be for real, next minute, not so sure. I read this book at lightening speed hoping that at some point in the story a slip-up would occur and there would be a name of a person or a name of a boat given by mistake
that would lead me know if this was or was not a "fictitious" story after all. Bravo Nanci, you did it! Kept me guessing till the very end and beyond. Guess I will never know the truth. I'll have to read it again to make sure I didn't miss something! Anyone looking for a great summer read can purchase this book at many local stores or on Amazon. Cheap Fish... Read it today! BarBecue Safety tipS... Continued from Page 41 barbecue grill is turned off and not hooked up to the gas lines during cleaning. Before spraying the oven cleaner, check to see which way the nozzle is pointing. Too often, in haste and carelessness, the potent chemical does not land on the grill, but in someone's eyes because a quick check of the nozzle was not taken. This happened to a co-worker and he described the pain of this toxic fluid hitting his eye as being "unbearable." He could not see out of the injured eye and had to be rushed to the emergency room of the local hospital for treatment. Note: An extremely important reminder when going to the hospital with any sort of chemical injury, is to remember to take along the original container so the doctor can read the ingredients. This helps the doctor in identifying the agents and what course of treatment to pursue. The ingredient listed first on the can was a strong, potentially blinding, chemical and the eye needed to be cleansed thoroughly. Then the doctor could do an examination and see what damage may have been done to the eye. It was a most uncomfortable and painful experience that did not have to happen. Only a few extra seconds were needed to make sure the nozzle was pointed away from his face. A second precaution would be to wear safety glasses when doing any kind of outdoors or maintenance work around the house or garden. By taking the time to practice these safety measures, and relaying them to each member in the household, can help insure your family of a safe and happy summer of barbecuing.
