FISHING MONTAUK WITH CAPTAIN SKIP
Rain and Wind has been the highlight of this spring! Let Mother Nature get it all out of her system, that way we can have a beautiful summer! Let's go with that.
The milder winter we had is looking like it could really be a plus. All along the south side the birds have been on the bait ish and there are loads of bait ish on the offshore spots as well. Spearing and Sand Eels is what's on the menu right now. Huge schools of bait back west have got the Striped Bass ired up, so it's just a matter of time now, before our Striped Bass buddies show up in our backyard. Water tempera ture around the Point has been around 45 degrees. With the rain letting off and the sun inally coming out, by the afternoon's it got up to 47 degrees. With the immense amount of bait that's around and still coming, along with the squid that are on their way, we just may have those similar conditions we had last May! Fish blitzing everywhere, all around the Point and down the Beach!
2024 updated Fluke Regulations are now in. Opening is May 4th running through October 15th. May 4th through August 1st

Surfing Montauk with Debra Rose
Raglan...
If Vermont wins the cheeky superlative as the ‘New Zealand’ of the United States, Raglan is easily the Montauk of New Zealand.
Most surfers know of Raglan, and those willing to ly almost a full day and adjust to seventeen hours ahead of their hometown clocks are lucky enough to surf it. Australia gets plenty of attention for sur ing, possibly explaining why Raglan appears to be a land back in time.
In this case, that is a good thing.
New Zealand’s isolated location, strict rules for protecting the environment and the country’s nat ural resources help keep the their land and water pristine. And the residents could not be more warm and friendly. Kiwis, hiking, rugby and Manuka honey are images usually associated with New Zealand, and for many it’s now sur ing.
Pictures may showcase the sandy and sweep ing Ngarunui Beach, and some try to capture videos of one of the worlds longest consistent lefts at Manu Bay, but to see it and surf Raglan is truly a life changing experience.
While not as sleepy as the depiction in Endless Summer, Raglan remains gorgeous. Encircled by green mountains, the town is surrounded by hills and water, which feels more island than inlet. Somehow the town‘s vibe remains low key, even with such world wide attention on Raglan. Similar to Montauk, Raglan has its own ‘Shack’ in the center of town, a bright and funky eatery that seems to be a favorite of, well everyone visiting and living there. There are few hotels, a handful of restaurants and bakeries that are superb and many homes to choose from to rent on Air B and B. And like Montauk, property prices are climb ing.
Waves at Raglan are world class, and if you’re not already in New Zealand it’s worth the trip just to surf there. Give yourself enough time to stay for such an arduous journey. It’s hard for surfers to imag ine a place where wide un crowded beaches, enough waves to go around, an eclectic mix of kind locals and only a few restaurants and bars can exist. And there are consistent waves all year long.
Raglan is welcoming to all surf levels, more advanced breaks past famed Manu Bay include Whale Bay and Indicators. When swells are bigger the lines connect from one break to the next, one record is almost two kilometers long. Known as a “wave machine,” Raglan may be most appealing to those in Mon tauk looking for daily waves in a stunning place that feels like Montauk forty years ago. Happy sur ing!
You can spot a rip current by the line of foam making a mushroom cloud in the surf. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea. If CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT • Don’t fight the current • Swim parallel to the shore, then to the beach • If you can’t escape, float or tread water • If you need help, call
wave for assistance SAFETY FIRST • Know how to swim • Never swim alone • If in doubt, don’t go out More information about rip currents can be found at usla.org The Montauk Sun ~ May 2024 ~ 11

Montauk Fire Department Corner
(soniboy@aol.com)
Welcome to this month’s edition of the Montauk Fire Department Corner, the perfect venue to stay up to date with what’s going on at the Montauk Fire Department. I trust everyone had a fun and safe Easter season with family and friends. I’m also sure you are getting ready for the warmer weather and the summer season. As we all know, with the nice weather comes our busy season, and, later in this issue, I’ll give you a few tips to prepare your home, and safety tips for the roadways for the next few months.
Like all of you, we at the Montauk Fire Department are getting ready for the summer months, and in April we did a lot of training in different aspects of ire ight ing in preparation.
On Monday, April 8th, our Company No. 1 staged a drill on attacking ires and ladder usage at our sub station located on Second House Road in Montauk. This drill was well attended and I was happy to see many of our newer and less experienced ire ighters were in attendance to hone their skills. Please see the attached photos. On Friday, April 19th , the De partment held its monthly ire school. This month’s focus was on water supply. Using several pieces of apparatus, we drafted water from the north and south sides of

Fort Pond in a simulated drafting procedure. This is very important and particularly useful for us as we are surrounded by water and it’s a vital source to extinguish ires when needed. Photos are attached here.
Lastly, on Monday, April 22nd we held a Department drill. It involved ighting ires at a large structure. The owners of the Montauk Yacht Club kindly allowed us to use their facil ity (which is under renovation) to practice ighting large structure ires. Please see the at tached photos.
Now for a few safety tips, please be sure that your smoke detectors are all working properly with fresh batteries, and that your residences are properly marked with house numbers. Attention drivers, please be careful and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and pull over, slow down and yield to all emergency ve hicles. Attention pedestrians, always use marked crosswalks where available to cross the highway and look left and right, and over your shoulder for turning vehicles before crossing.
This wraps up this month’s edition of Mon tauk Fire Department Corner. Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend.

Hamptons Observatory and co host East Hampton Library are delighted to present a free, virtual lecture by Terry Garcia, former National Geographic Executive Vice President and Chief Science & Exploration Of icer, who’ll discuss his new book, The Future of Exploration: Discovering the Uncharted Frontiers of Science, Technology, and Human Potential, an anthology by 36 of the world’s most renowned explorers and visionaries. Exploration is as old as humankind, but there are still surprises that await us. With technology opening doors that once seemed permanently closed, the 21st century will be the greatest age of exploration in our history. Despite the impressive extent of our accumulated knowledge, we have barely scratched the surface of our understanding of our world, of our universe, and of ourselves.
Accompanied by awe inspiring photographs by co author Chris Rainier, each contributor to Garcia’s book shares their personal achievements and insights into what the future of exploration looks like from their respective ields, the challenges they face, and possible solutions. Whether delving into the terrestrial, oceanic, or cosmic frontiers, this discussion will take you on a journey into uncharted realms and inspire you to be a part of the future of exploration.
These irst hand accounts of adventure and discovery include Jane Goodall, Sylvia Earle, Bob Ballard, Sir Richard Branson, Louise Leakey, Zahi Hawass, Yvon Chouinard,
Paula Kahumbu, Kris Tompkins, Kakenya Ntaiya, Wade Davis, Nemonte Nenquimo, Carolyn Porco (NASA’s Cassini/Saturn mission), Krithi Karanth, Nainoa Thompson, Was ia Nazreen, Samuel Ramsey, Sven Lindblad, Lee Berger, and more.
Terry Garcia was the Executive Vice President and Chief Science & Exploration Of icer for the National Geographic Society for 17 years. He was responsible for the Society’s core programs, which included more than 400 scienti ic ield research, conservation, and exploration projects annually. Under his leadership, the Society’s programs experienced signi icant growth in both global impact and prominence. Prior to joining National Geographic, Terry was Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere for the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Deputy Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He also served as NOAA’s General Counsel from 1994 to 1996. In June 2010, he was appointed by President Obama to serve on the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling where he investigated the root causes of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and made recommendations on how to prevent future incidents. In 2011, he received Peru’s highest civilian award, La Orden del Sol del Peru, for his role in helping repatriate a collection of ancient artifacts taken from Machu Picchu in 1912. Terry is currently president of Exploration Ventures, a company that provides strategic advice and counsel to global clients in a range of sectors.

MUSE @ The End
by Sue Giustino
Located in the heart of Montauk, Muse @ The End has become a venue for ine dining, music, and happy hour specials. With the extensive bar area offering seating in a relaxed atmosphere, one can often ind pa trons enjoying a drink, app, or a full meal while con versing with others along the bar. On the other side, the spacious main dining room is welcoming with its beautiful décor. With the large front windows adding a natu ral glow to the overhead soft lighting, the room has a pleasant, cozy ambience.
Prior to sitting, we stopped at the bar and had the pleasure of chatting with Brian who was mixing up some tasty treats. One of the highlights was the Ger maine Spritz; a blend of St Germaine, lemon, Prosecco and club a nice, light, and sweet choice with a perfect beach get away vibe. My glass of Adorn Cabernet was a wonderful selection for our meal full bodied yet light enough to enjoy with both ish and steak.
As we were seated by Mario, the manager, he in formed us that this season they welcomed Chef Larry Wallace. Bringing a few new creative twists to their menu, Mario said that Larry was looking forward to sharing a few of them with us during our visit. For starters, we had the Calamari Salad with tender crispy calamari atop a bed of fresh greens blended with diced tomatoes, onions, julienne carrots, crisp cucumbers, and a light and zesty miso ginger vinegarette. The gently Baked Oyster are topped with a light blend of stilton cheese and panko accenting the natural fresh oyster lavor, with the stilton adding a subtle sweet ness and salty nutty inish. Both dishes were delicious, yet the two table favorites were the Stuffed Chopped Clams and the Lobster Mac n Cheese. With a hint of smoky goodness, the Stuffed Chopped Clams are unique with a light smoky/spicey lavor along from the chopped vegetables and seasonings accenting the natural sweet, irm, brininess of the clams. The lavors of the Lobster Mac n Cheese were perfect; the cheese sauce is cheesy, yet not too heavy, and the sauteed lobster takes it to another level. A blend of white cheddar and Boursin cheese creates and light cheesy sauce, which when mixed with the elbow macaroni and fresh sauteed lobster, all topped with herbed breadcrumb gratin, makes this dish outstanding. For dinner, Chef sent a bit of surf and turf. Starting with the Lobster Roll, which ev eryone agreed was delicious; overstuffed into a toasted bun the salad was lightly dressed with just a bit of celery and onion to add subtle lavor without being overdone, and served with crispy French fries and coles law. Day Boat Fresh Sea Scallops are seared per fectly tender and perched atop a bed of creamy mushroom aspa ragus risotto –these scal lops are succulent tender treats.

ESCAPE FROM PARADISE
with Ingrid Lemme Chalut
An Excursion to La Paz, Mexico
As we sailed along the expansive 5,800 mile Mexican coastline, my husband and I stumbled upon the cultural haven of La Paz during our re cent seafaring adventure. While the allure of Puerto Vallarta's ritzy resorts and Ense nada's famed margaritas captures many a traveler's heart, it was the singular charm of La Paz that beckoned to us.
Our journey began at Pichilingue harbor, where our majestic vessel, the Hol land America ms Volendam, lay at anchor. A scenic half hour bus ride, along beautiful cactus forests and rock for mations, delivered our group into the welcoming embrace of La Paz.
As the proud capital of Baja California Sur, La Paz re vealed itself as more than a mere por tal to Cabo San Lucas's renowned sands. Here, we wandered the water front promenade, where artistic mas terpieces framed the captivating marine ballet of the famous Grey Whales.
The city's name, La Paz, meaning 'peace' in Spanish, is a testament to its enduring spirit, having withstood the on slaught of Conquistadors for nearly two centuries. Today, it stands serene and inviting, cradling its visitors within the calm of the Sea of Cortez.
Our sojourn through La Paz was akin to peeling back the layers of Mex ico's historical saga—of empires, inva

From the land, the Roasted ½ Chicken is served with a gentle shallot, mushroom demi glaze adding a bit of sweetness to the tender roasted chicken lavor. Served with scal lion mashed potatoes and crisp thinly sliced caramelized carrot chips, this dish was highly praised by two of our companions who are semi connoisseurs of roasted chicken. The inal meal was a 14oz. Grilled Prime Shell Steak cooked to a perfectly tender medium rare, and plated with bacon wrapped as
paragus and a crisp baked potato. Utilizing just a bit of spice, the natural lavors of both steak and potato were prevalent making this an extremely enjoyable and ‘clean’ meal. In addition to the delicious tastes and enticing aromas, each dish had a lovely presentation appetizing to all senses.
Aside from what we enjoyed; the menu is quite ex tensive. There’s a lovely array of Appetizers and Salads including Mussels, steamed little necks, fried calamari, cauli lower tempura, as well as a choice of Ceasar, Chopped, Mixed Green, or even a Grilled Baby Octopus Salad.
The rest of the menu, as well as the Daily Specials in clude; raw bar options, entrees from the sea and land, as well as some tasty pasta choices, sure to be pleasing to
even the pickiest of eaters. A few that stood out to me include: Blackened Sword ish, Braised Boneless Short Ribs, Fluke Francaise, and Shrimp and Scallop Fettuccini. Even the Kid’s Menu has a choice of four favorites as well as a special plastic cup with a top and straw for their beverage.
Although we were beyond satis ied from the de lectable meal, Larry chose a few deserts for us to enjoy. The Hazelnut illed Fried Donuts were crispy outside, creamy inside and a de inite table favorite. The warm Brownie Sunday with a layer of fudge and topped with creamy vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and sprinkles is sure to be a chocolate lovers’ choice. The tasty Crème Brule had a creamy rich custard base topped with a layer of hardened caramelized sugar. Each dessert which is made on the premises tastes as good as it looks, and are sharable especially after a meal. Be sure to ask about the choices.

Have a Happy and Safe Grilling Seaon!
byStefanLonce
I don’t know about you, but I don’t wait until Memorial Day to start my grilling season. It happens every year...usually in early March I buy a couple of nice steaks and put them in my freezer awaiting the first warm, sunny day of the season. But first, there’s work to be done and some things of which you should be aware. In 2013-2017 outdoor grilling caused an annual average of 10,200 home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Gas grills caused more home fires than charcoal grills, the association added. Regardless of the type of grill you own, here are some safety tips that will keep you and your home safe for the grilling season:
1.Grilloutsideandawayfromanystructures:
Charcoal and gas grills are designed for outdoor use only. However, NFPA reports that more than onequarter (27%) of home fires started by outdoor grills began in a courtyard, terrace or patio, and 29% started on an exterior balcony or open porch. Pay attention to overhanging tree branches when you set up your grill.
2.Makesureyourgrillisstable: Only set up your grill on a flat surface and make sure the grill can’t be tipped over. Consider using a grill pad or splatter mat underneath your grill to protect your deck or patio.
3.Keepyourgrillclean: Remove grease or fat buildup from both the grill and the tray below the grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to completely cool off before disposing of them in a metal container.
4.BEWARETHEWIREBRUSH: If you use a stainless steel or brass wire brush to remove stuck-on food from grill grates, be aware of this surprising downside: Small, sharp bristles can break off as you’re cleaning and get stuck to your grill’s cooking surface. The next time you grill, those stray bristles may adhere to food and be accidentally ingested. (This happened to my
brother! He ended up in the emergency room with a wire bristle lodged in his throat! My nephew told me he was quite the celebrity in the ER that night...all the doctors wanted to see it.) As a matter of fact, an estimated 1,700 Americans went to the emergency room between 2002 and 2014 after having ingested wire bristles in grilled food, according to a study published in 2016 in the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Consider using a pumice stone or a coil-shaped bristle-free brush. I use a home-made brush...a wadded up piece of foil held with a long handled pair of tongs! After heating your grill, use the foil to scrub off the grates.

Questions & Answers About Our Environment
Dear EarthTalk: What’s causing the decline in U.S. wild turkey populations?
~ John Groveton, Alexandria, VA
Americans have always loved wild turkeys, perhaps too much. By 1900, we had nearly driven this close relative to the chicken to extinction as a result of unregulated hunting and habitat destruction. But thanks to conservation and relocation efforts, these big birds started making a comeback in the 1940s. Over the next several decades, thanks to a series of reforms and demographic changes, wild turkey numbers grew and the species hit its population peak in 2004 with as many as seven million of them across the U.S. All this made wild turkeys one of the biggest success stories in the history of American wildlife?
But will it last? Since that population peak, wild turkey numbers have fallen, declining some 15 percent between 2004 and 2014 and another 3 percent between 2014 and 2019. Biologists are struggling to determine why. Much of this decline has been in the South and the Midwest. Scientists have been investigating habitat loss, hunting, disease and climate change, as all possible causes of this population down turn.
One of the potential reasons causes for the decline is the rise in turkey eating predators. Hawks, bob cats, coyotes and raccoons are among wild turkeys’ natural predators. Hawks and owls are protected species and have had signi icant rebounds since the federal government banned the use of the pesticide DDT. This protection has allowed populations of birds of prey to grow, but they are also key predators of turkeys. This increase in predators could be one of the sources of the turkey decline.
Turkeys have very speci ic re quirements when it comes to their en vironment, so habitat loss could be another factor of their decline. Turkeys need areas of low, thick vegetation for nesting and raising chicks, and areas with mature trees to provide nuts to
eat in the fall. As more natural areas are destroyed, turkeys may be having a harder time inding swatches of land that meets all of their needs.
Climate change is likely another factor. Turkeys may be experiencing a failure to respond to the environmental shifts of climate change. A study published in the journal Climate Change Ecology found that turkeys don’t shift nesting times much as tempera tures and precipitation change. This can cause newly hatched turkeys to miss out on plant cover and edible bugs if the spring bloom starts earlier. In turn, this could affect the likelihood that turkey chicks survive into adulthood. We already know that rising temperatures affect over 100 bird species in the Americas; they might be harming turkeys too.

Montauk Music Festival- Celebrating 13 years of Music
As we reflect over the past 14 years [including 2 years without an in-person festival], we fondly remember meeting many talented artists and concertgoers, while enjoying numerous wonderful performances. For many, coming to this one-of-a-kind Festival to showcase their original music, is an experience they’ll never forget. A breathtaking venue, where upand-coming artists get exposure and networking opportunities with other artists and industry personnel, and perform for a receptive and appreciative audience.
This year’s May MontaukMusicFestivalMainStages will be at the MontaukYachtClub
As soon as it's confirmed, the link for the Montauk Music Festival APP, with the complete schedule will be posted on the website www.montaukmusicfestival.com. This year's industry workshop will be held on Friday the 17th, at Shagwong with industry panels and discussions. The complete schedule will also be on the website and posted at the event.
Once again this year, we will be collecting an entrance fee for the 2-day/ 2-stage open air main event at the Yacht Club- which will help raise money to support two local East End Charities: Lucia’s Angels and East End Coalition for Women’s Cancers. She premiered on “X factor” at just 15 years old.
She was later scouted by Starbucks to write music for their National Holiday Commercial. This lead her down the road of syncing more of her music to Film/Television and Radio soundtracks and commercials.

Mellish
Mellish’s music sounds unhurried, from the dreamy murmur of “January Sun” to the foggy folk drift of “Are You With Me” an impressive mood piece colored by drifting pedal steel guitar riffs that unfurl like a slow-motion iTunes visualizer. While the band have spent decades cultivating their sound, which marries icy atmospherics with a warmer, earthier slate of influences, including Neil Young and Floyd and Wilco. Slide guitar, pedal steel, and harmonica’s fill in the margins; one of the better tracks, the somber, dramatic “Valerie” boasts an overture ornamented with harmonies, lush instrumentation, and atmospheric riffs, reminiscent of a Bad Seeds. avec-mellish.blogspot.com

sions, and undying resolve. Remnants of eras past resonated around us, whispers of pearl divers, swashbuckling pirates, and the unyielding deter mination of its people.
Once greeted with open arms by the in digenous Guaycura, the Spaniards' insatiable lust for pearls led to an era of conquest and exploitation. It was La Paz's mesmerizing al lure that captured the imagination of John Steinbeck, prompting him to immortalize the city in his literary works 'The Pearl' and 'The Log from the Sea of Cortez.' Today, the leg endary oysters of La Paz stand as proud em blems of its rich legacy.
We ventured into the hallowed space of the Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, a relic of La Paz's missionary roots, and delved into the city's transformative journey from its chris tening by Hernán Cortés in 1535 to its renam ing by Admiral Sebastian Vizcaino in 1596. Our engagement with local culture continued as we marveled at the exquisite craftsman ship of La Paz's artisans, their stories as captivating as their work. The seafront Malecón beckoned us with its un spoiled beaches, verdant parks, and vibrant art. At El Bizmarkcito, we refreshed our palates with tangy lemonade, sweet hibiscus iced tea, and chilled local brews, all the while indulging in a sumptuous spread of ish, shrimp, beef, and lobster tacos, the sea's expanse providing the perfect back drop. Eager to explore La Paz further and tempted by the prospect of shopping along the bustling 3.1 mile malecón, dotted with a kaleidoscope of bars, eateries, and stores, some of our more intrepid companions chose to remain behind. Cornell scored 30 seconds into the game when freshman sensation Ryan Goldstein

scored with an assist from CJ Kirst. Notre Dame then reeled off 3 straight goals led by Valley Stream’s Pat Kavanagh who scored unassisted a minute and a half later. Pat Kavanagh then as sisted on goals by Jeff Ricciardelli and Eric Dob son. Cornell answered back with a Willem Firth goal with 4:43 left in the irst quarter. Then Notre Dame scored three straight goals by Reilly Gray, Nick Harris and Dobson getting his second goal of the irst quarter. Chris Kavanagh, Pat’s younger brother assisted on Gray’s goal.
Cornell’s Kirst scored his second goal of the irst quarter unassisted with 41 seconds to stop ND’s run. ND took a 6 3 lead into the 2nd quarter and I knew we were in for a shootout. ND opened the 2nd quarter with an unassisted goal from Freshman Jordan Faison. Cornell then scored twice on goals by Michael Long and Kirst. Since 2006, Inlet Seafood Restaurant has been owned and operated by 6 longtime friends and ishermen, their daily catch being the foundation of their incredible menu. Always serving deliciously fresh ‘boat to table’ meals that are enjoyed by lo cals and visitors alike, the Inlet never dis appoints. Through the years families and friends have gathered with a bird’s eye view
of the entrance to Montauk Harbor while appreciating the breathtaking sunsets and panoramic views of the Block Island Sound. Whether it’s for a casual night out, a special intimate dinner for two, a work gathering, a wedding or a family milestone celebra tion, The Inlet provides the perfect lo cation, ambiance, and food to create a spectacular event.
This Season the Inlet welcomes back Chef Henry Jimenez who’s been cooking in their kitchen on and off since they opened. They told me that last summer, when the previous chef left, it seemed like the natural next step was for Henry to step in. This year, he’s surprised them all by tweaking some recipes and adding new ones. The owners are all very grateful for his talent, loyalty and work ethic. Whether we are enjoying a light meal at the bar through sunset, a lunch outside on a deck, or a small gath ering in one of the dining rooms, we al ways love an outing to the Inlet. Both bars, upstairs and downstairs are great for enjoying a cocktail before and/or after dinner, or for eating a meal as we like to do. For this visit we chose a Thursday night and sat in the dining room watching the sun, eager to provide us with a bit of a sunset, burn through the remaining rainy day clouds.
Although the restaurant is known for their sushi and fresh ish choices the non ish options are also quite popular espe cially by carnitarians. The ‘From the Land’ section of

the menu offers chicken, steak, hamburger and even a Long Island Duck a dish my hus band really enjoys which is served with grilled zucch ini, ingerling pota toes, and sweet chili hoisin sauce. In ad dition, there are a number of salads that are al ways fresh and deli cious, to which you can add fresh catch, shrimp, or chicken. One of my favorites is the Goat Cheese Salad with organic ield greens, roasted red peppers, sun lower seeds all tossed in a basil vinaigrette and topped with a goat cheese ball. Other favorites from over the years include the Steak & Frites, Pan Seared Sea Scallops or Tuna Steak, Local Fresh Tacos, and the Classic Fish & Chips. Not to mention the list of delicious Appetizers, Raw Bar and Nightly Specials Menu.
Looking for something new to try, our waiter Jason suggested the Tuna Nachos which are a perfect combi nation of textures and lavors. Created with crispy, crunchy wonton chips, tender fresh creamy avocado and tuna, along with a bit of spice from the spicy mayo, and accented by the savory umami lavor of the seaweed salad this sushi twist on nachos is just delicious.
The Sushi menu is quite complete with a great selection of Nori Rolls, Sushi & Sa shimi Rolls and Platters, and many tasty starters like our Tuna Nachos. After a friendly visit and recommendations from Johnny at the Sushi Bar we decided on two specialty rolls, the Lady Slipper and the FM Station. Arranged like a pink fan, the Lady Slipper is a gentle combination of shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and avocado wrapped in pink soy paper and plated with a swish of sweet chili sauce. With a unique red and black tobiko top, the FM Station is created with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and avocado. Both rolls, although quite different, are spectacularly fresh and delicious. If you want a roll without rice, try the Inlet Roll a blend of spicy crunchy tuna, avocado and siracha & ponzu sauce it’s one of my favorites!
For our meals, we chose a pasta, and the Black Sea Bass Filet another of Jason’s rec ommendations. Again, wanting to try something new, we went with the Cavatelli & Broccoli prepared with garlic and oil, and it was delicious. Both the cavatelli and broccoli were cooked to a perfect al dente, as were the shrimp we added to the dish [options in
clude Fresh Catch, Shrimp, or Chicken]. Aside from our pasta and the Pappardelle Bo lognese [beef, pork, and veal], the other pasta choices are created with a few different types of seafood. They are all delicious options, with the Spicy Seafood Fra Diavolo with sauteed shrimp, calamari, clams, mussels and the Linguini with Fresh Clams in a white wine sauce being two of our favorites!
Jason had mentioned that due to its popularity, the Black Sea Bass Filet has been offered on the Special Menu for a while. And after trying it, I can see why. With a perfectly crispy skin, the tender laky ilets were perched atop a bed of creamy risotto surrounded by lemon capers, cherry tomatoes, and a light paprika sauce. This savory dish is an excellent blend of lavors to enjoy while also appreciating the natural goodness of the gentle Sea Bass.
Although we were too stuffed to enjoy dessert, they offer creative tasty treats in cluding a Cookilicious, Chocolate Torte, and Panna Cotta be sure to check them out.
The Inlet Seafood Restaurant is located at the end of East Lake Drive just before Gin Beach; a great location offering consistently delicious food. They are open for lunch 12 3:30pm and dinner beginning at 4:30pm, Thursday through Sunday. For further information, go to https://www.inletseafood.com/

Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art
by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
If it has been a long time since you visited a museum in New York City, spring is the perfect time to take that day trip journey. One of our favorite places, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, has an outstanding line up of exhibits. Invite a friend, gather the family or make an excursion with your social group and enjoy these exhibits in one of the most breathtaking museums New York has to offer! Here are a few highlights of some of their current exhibits.
American Literary Posters – The Museum’s collection of some 500 literary posters from nineteenth century American will run through June 11, 2024. “During the 1890s, a new type of poster emerged in the United States, one that more closely resembled a work of art than an advertisement. These were sleek, sophisticated posters publicized magazines, newspapers, books, and other forms of literature. Over the course of the 19th century, innovations in printing techniques enabled the production of multicolored posters that seamlessly integrated text with image. Before 1890, posters tended to be produced by large printing irms with little regard for aesthetic value. By contrast, lit erary posters were frequently printed by the issuing publishing houses, where art de partment staff could ensure a higher quality product. They were also designed by the top illustrators of the day who drew on the latest sty listic trends such as Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement to create elegant, modern designs that had a lasting impact on illustration, graphic de sign, and marketing in the United States.”

amples of Indian court paintings assembled by Hodg kin over a lifetime of collecting. Underlying Hodgkin’s eclectic collection, which includes portraits, palace scenes, royal hunts, illustrations to religious epics, de votional subjects, and nature studies, are several uni fying themes that re lect Hodgkin’s preferences for compositions that convey narrative drama, poetic al lusion, and emotional intensity. He also had a predi lection for elephants rendered as portraits and in action.
Hidden Faces Covered Portraits of the Renaissance is the irst exhibition to examine an intriguing but largely unknown tradition of Renaissance painting: portraits designed as multisided objects in which the sitters’ images were concealed behind a hinged or sliding cover, within a box, or by a dual faced format. Private portraits were often hidden beneath other paintings that served as witty prologues and protec tive covers. The reverses and covers of these portraits were adorned with puzzle like emblems, inscriptions, allegories, and mythologies that re lected the sitters’ characters as well as broader cultural values. The viewer decoded the meaning of the symbolic portrait before lift ing, sliding, or turning the image over to unmask the face below.
The Temple of Dendur – One of our family’s favor ites, is the Temple from the Roman period during the reign of Augustus Caesar, ca 15BC. This is a per manent exhibit where visitors can see up close and personal and walk through this awe inspiring struc ture from Egypt, Nubia, Dendur from the West bank of the Nile River, 50 miles south of Aswan. Made from Aeolian sandstone, from the gate to the rear of the temple is 82 feet. The structure was given to the United States by Egypt in 1965 and awarded to the Museum 1967.

I know, I know. I just did an apple pie a few months ago. But, this is different. This is an apple pie illing that doesn’t need the pie crust! A dessert that can stand on its own (with perhaps a scoop of ice cream, whipped cream, or even Greek yogurt). Also, it makes a great topping for French toast or pancakes in lieu of syrup and is great over a slice of pound cake. And yes...you can use it as a pie illing too.
How did I come up with this recipe? Quite frankly, I was making an apple pie and left the room while the illing was cooking. It went too far for a pie, but I igured what if I thickened it up anyway and tweaked the ingredients? If all else failed I’d end up with a really well lavored apple sauce. Well, what I came up with was a really great dessert/topping, without the mess of making a pie crust!
Apple Pie “Filling”
INGREDIENTS:
•½ cup Light Brown Sugar, packed
•½ cup Granulated Sugar
•1 tbls. + ½ tsp. Apple Pie Spice (*see note)
•½ tsp. Vanilla Extract
•5 lbs. (6 8 medium apples) Good Baking Apples, such as Granny Smith or Honey Crisp, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
•1 tbls. Fresh Lemon Juice
•2½ tbls. Cornstarch
•2½ tbls. Water
•½ tsp. Lemon Zest
•½ tsp. Vanilla Extract
* In lieu of Apple Pie Spice, you can make your own with: 1 tbls. Cinnamon, ¼ tsp. Nutmeg, and ¼ tsp. Allspice.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. In a large pot, whisk together the sugars, apple pie spice, and salt. Whisk it well as to break up any of the big lumps in the brown sugar.
2. Peel, core and slice your apples. My favorite helpful tool for this is a melon baller. It makes coring easy.
3. Add the apple slices and lemon juice to the pot with the sugars and spices and toss until the apples are evenly coated in the mixture. Set aside for 30 minutes for the apples to macerate and exude some of their juices. As you can see, they give up a lot of juice.
5. Set the pot with the apples over medium low heat. Cook, stirring, until the apples are softened (about 5 minutes is you are using it for a pie, 10 15 minutes or too your desired tenderness if you are using it as a dessert or topping). Raise the heat to medium and pour the cornstarch mixture over the apples. Cook, stirring, until the apple juices begin to
7. Allow the mixture cool completely if you’re using it for a pie, or serve it warm as a dessert or topping.
8. Enjoy!

AURELIA DADDURA
Aurelia was known to many around Montauk as happy, upbeat, smiling, always giving a wave as you drove past while she was walking, and eager to meet friends to share a cocktail and hear music at some of her favorite places around town.
10/27/53 4/14/24
The unexpected passing of her husband Michael on April 2, 2021 hit Aurelia hard, yet she was working through her grief with the support of her son Chris, and her friends and family. Almost 3 years to the day, at the age of 70, Aurelia also passed away unexpectedly. Aurelia grew up in East Meadow, NY, the daughter of George and Leora Schaffer, wife to Michael Daddura, loving mother of Christopher Daddura, and sister to Carol and Laurel.
She and Michael were married on July 16, 1977, settling in Huntington Station. Eventually, they were able to realize their dream by buying property and building their second home in Montauk. After raising her son in Huntington, while working as a Contracts Manager for BAE Systems, she and Michael retired to Montauk for their golden years.
Aurelia was a religious and charitable woman. She loved walking insisting on walking 12 miles a day rain or shine. Walking all over town, she carried treats to give all the dogs she met along the way. She also loved dancing and drinking French martinis everywhere she went. Even if there wasn’t a dance loor, she would create one and dance!
“Seeing how many people really cared about my mom, and the support everyone has offered me has been really moving, a real beacon of light in these challenging days,” mentioned Chris. “A memorial night for Aurelia will be held in Montauk, at Tauk @ Trails End, on May 10th starting at 6pm. It is open to all who loved her©.”
If you’d like to make a donation in her memory, Chris mentioned that she would appreciate it going to Little Shelter Animal Rescue in Huntington, LiveOn NY, or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The full Moon May 2024 marks the peak of spring in many parts of North America that acts as a transi tion into summer’s sunny days and warm nights. The May full Moon is often called the “Flower Moon” with reverence to abundant lowers in bloom, a prelude to Mother Nature’s coming attractions. But what other names does this special spring full Moon go by in dif ferent cultures?
Full Moon May 2024: Thursday, May 23
Peak Illumination: 9:53 a.m. Eastern Time
Origin Of The Flower Moon Name:
May is the month when hundreds of native low ers, sedges, bushes and trees blossom throughout North America bloom. Columbine’s intricate red and yellow bell like lowers with deep nectaries provide early season food for hummingbirds and other long tongued pollinators. Lance leaf coreopsis produces a plethora of bright yellow, daisy like lowers. Gardeners who promptly dead head spent blossoms prolong the bloom period through July. Meanwhile large stands of pink hued prairie smoke create a hazy effect resem bling smoke hovering close to the ground.
May’s full Moon bears the name of regionally sig ni icant lowers and blooms in other regions.
In the Southeast, the Creek and Choctaw referred to this as the “Mulberry Moon.” Fruit from the native red mulberry tree have long been enjoyed in many forms. As dried fruit, as an additive to water and even mixed into cornbread. Fruit, leaves, and twigs were used to make dyes and the branches were used to make bows.
In the Paci ic Northwest, May’s full Moon is known by the Kalapuya as “Camas Blooming Time.” Camas blue lowers cover meadows throughout Oregon, east ern Washington and northern Idaho. Camas has been a key food source in Northwest Native diets for cen
turies. When the blooms fade and set seed in June and July, native peoples would harvest the nutrient rich roots. They kept larger bulbs and returned smaller roots to the soil to ensure a good harvest the following year.
Growth Related May Full Moon Names: Not to be out done by the blooms of spring, May is the month when leaves burst from their buds. It’s the irst time since the previous fall for many parts of North America to once again enjoy all the gorgeous ness of green. It makes sense the Apache refer to this as “The Season When The Leaves Are Green.” The Lakota call it the “Moon Of The Green Leaves” while the Mohawk name it “The Time Of Big Leaf.”
As the green leaves ill the trees, the last of the hard frosts leave these regions, making it safe for farm ers to plant their ields. May’s full Moon has been a harbinger of planting season called the “Field Maker Moon” by the Abenaki, “Corn Moon” by the Winnebago and “When Women Weed Corn” by Algonquin in Northeast to Great Lakes. The East Cherokee strict translation for this is “The Putting It In A Hole Moon.” See our Gardening By The Moon Calendar.
In other regions, the full Moon marks a time re lated to animals. The Passamaquoddy in Northeast in the St. Croix River region call it the “Alewive Moon.” Also known as the river herring, these migratory ish can be found along the East Coast from Florida to Maine. Alewife populations once reached hundreds of millions. The annual spring return of these ish to coastal rivers every spring supported some of the old est isheries in the United States.
The Cree in the Northern Plains into Canada call it the “Frog Moon.” Anyone who has heard the call of the spring peeper frog can attest to appropriateness of this name.
In Europe, May’s Moon is known as the “Milk Moon.” This name dates back o medieval times be cause May was the month when cows were moved to their summer pastures. These ields provided mother cows with rich nourishment to feed their newborn calves.
Other Celtic and Old English names for this full Moon include “Mothers’ Moon,” “Bright Moon,” “Hare Moon,” and “Grass Moon.”
Whatever it is called, the May full Moon is a time to appreciate the sweetness of spring!

Grilling Safety...
Continued from Page 27
5.Checkforpropaneleaksonyourgasgrill: Before the season’s first barbecue, check the gas tank hose for leaks by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turning on the gas. If there is a propane leak, the solution will bubble. Other signs of a propane leak include the smell of gas near the barbecue or a flame that won’t light.
6.Iftheflamegoesout,waittore-light: If you are using a gas grill and the flame goes out, turn the grill and the gas off, then wait at least five minutes to re-light it.
7.Takecarearoundthegrill: Never leave a lit grill unattended. Don’t allow kids or pets to play near the grill. Never try to move a lit or hot grill, and remember the grill will stay hot for at least an hour after use.
8.Becarefulwithcharcoalstarterfluid: If you use a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid. If the fire starts to go out, don’t add any starter fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Consider using a charcoal chimney starter, which uses newspaper to start the fire instead of starter fluid.
9.Weartherightclothing: Loose fitting clothing is NOT ALLOWED! Clothing can easily catch fire, so be sure your shirt tails, sleeves or apron strings don’t dangle over the grill.
10.Bereadytoputoutthefire: Have a fire extinguisher nearby...and check that it is charged and ready to use! A fire extinguisher should be bought at the time you buy your grill! If you can’t afford a fire extinguisher, you can’t afford a grill. Never use water to put out a grease fire, it will just spread it.
These easy-to-follow tips will help you and your family to enjoy a safe and fun grilling season. ENJOY!

‘HIGHLIGHTS MAGAZINE’ – A DOCUMENTARY
by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
How many of us recall Highlights for Children, the educa tional magazine, we enjoyed it ourselves or it was introduced to our children? Our irst encounter with this beloved publication was at the pediatrician’s of ice where copies were available for their young patients to read and be entertained. When I saw how much our children enjoyed Highlights, I ordered a subscription to be mailed to our home each month. It was perfect to keep them busy on long car rides because it was fun, encourages children to read and is edu cational. It has stories, puzzles, crafts, games and each child had a favorite part of the magazine. Whether inding an object hidden in a busy picture, reading a short story or the cartoon about two young boys, “Goofus and Gallant” it was always interesting. Side by side photos showed Goofus doing something incorrectly, compared to Gallant that was doing it right, was a simple lesson, but offered in a humorous way.
Recently my daughter told me about a wonderful documentary she just watched that was made in celebration of Highlights for Children’s 70th anniversary. The ilm is called 44 Pages, as that is the exact number each edition always contains. The documentary covers the start of the magazine in Honesdale, Pennsylvania in 1946 by Garry Cleveland Myers and his wife Caroline. They had worked for another children’s publication before starting Highlights and came up with the slo gan, “Fun with a Purpose.” It now has over one billion copies in print, covering languages all around the globe!
What I enjoyed about this documentary was the depiction of every aspect of putting together the editorial content of the magazine.

Dear EarthTalk: Why hasn’t biomass caught on more as a renewable energy source? ~ PJ, via email
Biomass is organic material derived rom living or recently living organisms like plants, animals and mi croorganisms. It can be used as a renewable energy source via combustion, ermentation or conversion to bio uels. Some biomass sources, like oil or alcohol rich crop residue and animal manure, are widely produced on an industrial scale. As we deplete and intentionally shi t away rom the pollutive natural gas, oil and coal, op timists believe that bio uel may become a viable wide spread renewable alternative.
First generation bio uels use ood crops, like corn and sugarcane, but this diverts resources rom ood pro duction. Instead, second generation bio uel uses inedible biomass, like wood and agricultural waste. These are low cost and can serve also to reduce waste, as they use animal and plant waste that would otherwise go to land fills. The U.S. Department o Energy says using up to a bil lion tons o biomass each year or bio uel could reduce petroleum consumption by 30 percent and create new domestic jobs.
Biomass proponents call bio uel carbon neutral be cause the carbon dioxide (CO2) released during its com bustion is o set by the amount that is absorbed by the plants during growth. Others believe this overlooks ac tors like land use change, biomass processing emissions, and the methane released during decomposition. Bio mass combustion also releases carbon monoxide, nitro gen oxides and particulate matter, highlighting the environmental and health risks associated with biomass utilization.
It takes decades or biomass produced carbon to be removed rom the atmosphere. Studies suggest that it may even be a dirtier business than ossil uels, with wood and corn based ethanol emitting rom 1.25 to 1.5 times more CO2 than coal per kilowatt hour o electricity generated. Research conducted by Harvard's Jonathan Buonocore suggests that biomass combustion causes more health related deaths than conventional coal fired power plants. Moreover, biomass production can con tribute to loss o orests and biodiversity, and indirect land use change. Burning biomass can cause significant public health issues, including asthma, heart and respi ratory diseases, birth de ects, and even death.
Mitigating environmental and health drawbacks and en hancing the e ectiveness o current technologies can help
make bio uel more viable. Investing in advanced biomass conversion technologies, such as gasification and pyrol ysis, can reduce greenhouse gas and toxic byproducts during combustion. Promoting sustainable sourcing practices, including the exclusive use o agricultural and orestry residues rather than dedicated energy crops, can minimize de orestation and habitat destruction. Bio uels today are more expensive than conven tional uels like natural gas and crude oil. Researchers aim to design processes that better utilize lignin and sug ars in biomass. I this can be achieved, biomass derived aviation uel could potentially achieve a break even price as low as $3.15 per gallon o gasoline equivalent, o ering a competitive edge against traditional jet uel costs. I we can address these health, environmental and technolog ical challenges, we may well realize the ull potential o bio uels.

Dear EarthTalk: How do di erent regions o the U.S. compare with regard to vulnerability to impending cli mate threats? ~ Peter Greenville, Detroit, MI
Climate change causes rising temperatures, fluctu ating rain patterns and other extreme weather phenom ena. However, the e ects o climate change are not equally distributed across the country.
Regional climate change experiences can be broadly divided into two categories: (1) geographical and cli matic actors (i.e., the actual climate change); (2) and socio economic actors (i.e., the vulnerability o the pop

ulation to these changes). It is crucial to understand how di erent regions experi ence climate change in order to develop e ective climate policies. Some regions, or example, rely on climate sensitive in dustries such as agriculture, tourism and natural resource extraction, while others do not. Those that do tend to be home to vulnerable populations like people with low income, and marginalized communi ties.
The Fi th National Climate Assess ment (NCA5) recognized certain region specific patterns. The U.S. Northeast is experiencing significant increases in ex treme precipitation, with some areas see ing up to a 60 percent rise rom the historical average. Also, warming water temperatures are impacting local wildli e. In the Southeast, lengthy coasts make the region particularly vulnerable to hurri canes and increasing sea levels. This vul nerability is exacerbated by the region's reliance on coastal ecosystems and tourism.
Climate change negatively a ects the Great Plains' huge energy sector. Agricul ture is disrupted through the depletion o a critical water source: the High Plain Aqui er. The region is also vulnerable to habitat loss, changes in ood availability, and other unique problems. The Midwest, with its intense agricultural production, su ers extreme weather events and changes in precipitation patterns that dra matically impact crop yields. A severe drought in 2012 caused billions o dollars in losses to Midwest armers.
The Northwest's vulnerable water re sources are greatly impacted by higher temperatures. Snowpack, a critical water source, is declining. Also, the region's ex tensive orests ace a higher risk o wild fires and insect in estations. The Southwest, characterized by a hot and dry climate, is also vulnerable to prolonged droughts, severe wildfires and water scarcity, urther straining its already lim ited water resources.
Alaska and its large population o in digenous people is a ected by melting perma rost, coastal erosion and loss o wildli e. Hawaii and the U.S. Caribbean's coastal communities su er sea level rise, coral ree degradation and extreme weather events. And the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration reports that degradation o coral ree s due to rises in sea sur ace temperatures could incur coastal damages costing approximately $1.2 billion (in 2022 dollars) annually to Hawai i and the U.S. Pacific territories.
While impacts o climate change vary, it is important to remember no region is im mune. We will need to con tinue to collect and analyze data to ully understand this issue. Furthermore, we need to empower vulnerable com munities and prioritize their needs. Finally, we need to make collaborative e orts at the local, state and national levels to truly combat this issue.

Cornell took over from there scoring four straight. Wantagh senior Hugh Kelleher scored the irst followed by Kirst’s 5th goal of the game. Then Goldstein scored a pair. His 2nd and 3rd goals of the game. Notre Dame stopped the bleeding with a pair of goals by Jake Taylor and Pat Kavanagh. Pat’s 2nd goal of the game with 21 seconds left in the 3rd quarter put ND up 14 13 after 3 quarters. Kelleher got his 2nd goal followed by ND’s Dobson getting his 3rd goal. Cornell’s Firth and Long got their 2nd goals back to back and the score was 16 15 Cornell leading with 5:14 to play. Taylor got his 3rd goal of the game for ND to tie it up at 16. Kelleher got his 3rd goal of the 2nd half to put Cornell up 17 16. With 2:45 left Chris Kavanagh got his irst goal of the game for ND to tie it up at 17. With 30 seconds left and the clock running down Pat Kavanagh threw a pass to Gray who dropped it. Chris Kavanagh jumped on the loose ball and quickly passed it to junior Ben Ramsey from Palo Alto, CA. The unlikely hero ired Chris Ka vanagh’s pass home with 6.4 seconds on the clock and
Notre Dame broke Cornell’s heart 18 17.
After the game I caught up with Notre Dame’s Coach Kevin Corrigan. I asked him “How does a game like this get you ready for the postseason?” He an swered, “We were not great today. We’re not going to be happy with that when we look at the ilm, but we gutted one out, our kids were gritty, they stayed in the game, they kept making plays when they had to.” He added, “There’s a lot to learn from the ilm, if we don’t burn it irst.” Nice to see he has a sense of humor. Cor rigan has coached ND for 36 years and has the defend ing national champions ranked #1 heading into May Madness.
Six days later I left rain and fog in Montauk for sun shine in Princeton, NJ on Saturday 4/20. The #17 ranked Tigers were hosting no.13 Penn Quakers. The game started off slow with no goals in the irst 10 min utes. With 4:59 to go in the irst quarter freshman Colin Burns scored off a pass from Coulter Mackesy. 1:05 later another freshman Nate Kabiri put Princeton up 2 0 unassisted. Penn’s James Shipley and Grif in Scane scored a pair of unassisted goals until Princeton senior Tommy Barnds scored off a Kabiri assist with 1:22 to go in the irst quarter. Princeton led 3 2 for almost 3
minutes of the second quarter until Penn knotted it up at 3 3 on an unassisted Tynan Walsh goal. 4 seconds later Andrew McMeekin scored after winning the face off, racing down ield and shooting it past Penn’s goalie. It was the irst of ive straight Princeton 2nd quarter goals. Chad Palumbo and Mackesy scored then McMeekin did it again 5 seconds after Mackesy’s goal. Two minutes later Sean Cameron scored for Princeton. With 2:43 left in the irst half Luke DiNola ended the ive goal Princeton run to make it an 8 4 Princeton lead at half. Burns and Scane traded goals followed by John Dunphey and Davis Provost. Then Lukas Stanat and Scane traded goals for the third time in the third quarter. Princeton led 11 7 entering the inal quarter. Mackesy opened up the fourth quarter with a goal off a Palumbo assist. Then Shipley, Provost and Stanat reeled off 3 straight unassisted goals for Penn to get it to 12 9. Stanat and Provost traded goals and with 4:16 to go it was 13 10. This is when Princeton’s goalie Michael Gi anfocaro decided it was time to take over.
After receiving a pass from long stick mid ielder Michael Bath, Gianforcaro started up ield with the ball on Senior Day in front of a packed house. He decided to take the ball all the way down ield. With 3:46 to go the senior lacrosse Captain turned his goalie stick over shooting backhanded into Penn’s goal. Gianforcaro scored on Penn’s Emmet Carroll who’s won the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week 3 times this season (2/26, 4/1, 4/15). Kabiri ended the scoring with his 2nd goal of the game. Princeton won 15 10 improving its record to 8 4. As we go to press Princeton is 3 2 in the Ivy League. They play 11 2 Yale (4 1 Ivy League). Yale is ranked #8 in the 4/22 USILA Coaches Poll. Princeton moved up to no.16 in the USILA Coaches Poll and no.13 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. Yale is #9 in the IL media poll. May Madness is just getting started.

For years, Artist Suse Lowenstein has opened her lovely secluded home and sculpture garden each day, right here in Montauk, for visitors to experience her very personal work of art DARK ELEGY. Inspired by the loss of her eldest son, Alexander, in the tragedy of Pan Am light 103, from London to NY that went down over Lockerbie, Scotland in an act of terrorism, killing 270 people; this exhibit is a memorial to all those who have lost their lives to terrorism.

Here Comes The Sun
Have you noticed a shift in mood since we moved the clocks forward an hour and the days are illed with sunlight? What we interpret as feeling more ‘ener gized’ has a lot to do with what is happening not only with time but with the neurochemi cals in our brain.
As we have become more familiar with the role of serotonin in our emotions, another function this chemical has is to regulate our hormonal levels when we are exposed to sun light.
Let’s say you travel in the winter to have some sun exposure, or you ind yourself spo radically indoors during peak summer months. Your overall sense of well being may be disrupted, having a negative impact on your mood.
Being physically active (preferably out doors), getting a full night of sleep each night, and getting more sunlight exposure daily will make a difference in keeping your energy and mood elevated. Have you ever stepped into a well lit indoor space, even a lighting store, and noticed how much better you feel? While it’s not the same as natural sunshine, proper in door lights and light therapy lamps will bal ance out some of those chemicals especially during the darker seasons. Traveling and try ing to adjust for jet lag is usually boosted by immediate and prolonged sunlight exposure when you arrive home or to your destination to acclimate to the time zone. Our circadian
rhythms are impacted by sunlight, and the proper amount will go along way to make us feel more invigorated and less fatigued.
Intuitively you may already know that these brain functions in luence our metabolism, while hunger, ability to digest and burn calories alters ac cording to your exposure. The healthier and more consistent access to sun shine, the more ef icient the processes. We have to constantly combat the prolonged, ill timed, unhealthy exposure we have to arti icial light all day long. Our susceptibility to diseases, happiness, overall health and longevity are directly correlated to our time spent in sunlight. Go outside and play!
