A Celebration of Local Artists Our Sixth Annual "Blessing of the Artists" this year will be Saturday, November 15, 2014, on the campus of First Parish Church, UCC, at 5267 Sound Avenue, Northville (Riverhead) and the Grange at 5268 Sound Avenue, Northville (Riverhead). The blessing service will be at 1:00 p.m. at the church with a reception gallery following at 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Grange (across from the church).

We are interested in celebrating our human connectedness through the arts, with a Blessing of the Artists. We emphasize that this would be a blessing of the artists, not a religious service. It would be an opportunity for community members to appreciate the creations of her local artists and the many contributions art brings to all our living. The day will begin with a blessing of the artists. All artists are welcomed to be blessed; this will be followed by an art exhibit/sale of artists' creations, a reception of local fare and an ice cream social.

This year we will be celebrating our new relationship with the North Fork Chocolate Company https://www.northforkchocolate.com/ who produce artisanal Belgian chocolates filled with Local ingredients and gourmet desserts crafted from Local products on the East End of Long Island. Fresh from the farm fruits, vegetables, dairy and local purveyor products are used: spirits, sea salt, herbs, and honey! The Grange has become a new home for Ann and Chef Steve bringing to us their latest idea the "Artisan Project"; an Agro-flea market for crafters, farmers, and purveyors to display their goods for purchase to the local community and travelers. They plan to begin late September on Fridays and Saturdays at The Grange and future inside events include Cooking Classes and an Artist Gallery.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or income. An emergency shelter is a safe place for victims of domestic violence who are experiencing violence at the hands of an intimate partner. When a victim enters a domestic violence shelter, they often are forced to leave their pet behind in the existing abusive relationship. Under the Safe Pets and Families Program, the SPCA will work with various animal rights organizations and shelters to find a safe home for the pet of a domestic violence victim.

“The Retreat is pleased to support the Safe Pets and Families Program, which we believe will benefit victims of domestic violence and give them the comfort of knowing that while she is safe in a domestic violence shelter, her pet is likewise in a safe, secure place away from the abuser,” said Michele Pollock Rich, the executive director of the Retreat.

“Without an adequate plan for family pets, victims of domestic violence are often reluctant to seek shelter. Research clearly shows that offenders of domestic violence often have a pattern of abuse involving all members of the household, including pets,” said Colleen Merlo, Executive Director of the Suffolk County Coalition against Domestic Violence. “When victims of domestic violence seek to escape their abusive homes they have to consider options for themselves, their children and their family pets.

Schneiderman Announces Extension Of County Tick Control Advisory Committee The Suffolk County Legislature at its October 7 General Meeting unanimously passed a resolution, sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), to extend the Tick Control Advisory Committee until the 2016 Annual Vector Control Plan is adopted by the legislature. This committee was created to advise the county’s Division of Vector Control on developing a plan to reduce tickborne illnesses in Suffolk County.

“A primary function of government is to protect public health and welfare,” said Legislator Schneiderman. “This committee will continue to help Vector Control develop a plan to reduce the incidence of Lyme disease and other tick borne-illnesses.”

The committee consists of 12 members, including Chairman Dr. Jorge Benach, director of the Center for Infectious Diseases and Distinguished Professor of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at Stony Brook University. Dr. Benach was designated by Dr. James Tomarken, the Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

In 2013, Legislator Schneiderman sponsored a resolution that requires the division of Suffolk County Vector Control to submit a yearly plan to reduce the incidence of Lyme disease and other tickborne illnesses. Under Schneiderman’s legislation, the yearly Suffolk County Vector Control plan would include a section on the steps being taken to reduce the incidence of tick-borne illnesses. This section will also include the work to be done, the methods to be employed and methodologies to determine the effectiveness of the program.

There are multiple types of tick-borne illnesses in Suffolk County including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Babesiosis and Ehrlichiosis.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 300,000 yearly cases of Lyme disease.

In the late 20th century, Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, was recognized as an significant emerging infection. Since its identification nearly 30 years ago, Lyme disease has continued to spread. There have been an increasing number of cases in the Northeastern and North Central parts of the United States.
