November 2022

This month significant changes and impressive transformations will be happening for all. These changes will occur in a blink of an eye. This month, we all should avoid unnecessary risk taking. In stead, review our priorities and objectives for the New Year. Everyone will have to deal with unpre dictable situations. Everyone's focus will be on re birth and new beginnings.

There will be a Full Moon on November 8. This Full Moon will be a Lunar Eclipse in Taurus. Everyone will have to learn to accept the transfor mation that is happening. We all have to push for ward and not be complacent. If something is not working, find a new path to move forward. Novem ber's full moon features the beginning of the end, symbolically and literally. Usually, Eclipses bring out what is hidden, positive or negative, and have last ing effects 3 6 months after. Usually, whatever is supposed to end happens after an Eclipse. Avoid elective surgical procedures during this Full Moon!

November's full moon is commonly called the Beaver Moon, also the Full Mourning Moon. During this month, beavers were busy constructing dams, which was an excellent time to gather their fur. Tak ing the time to self reflect and let go. Look back on the past year and take stock of your desires and am bitions. Do a winter clearing out in your living space and work environments. This clearing out also is emotional baggage we all need to clear out. Take the time to grieve and let go of anything this includes people that do not serve our souls, use this time to cleanse to allow moving forward.

There will be a New Moon on November 23 in Sagittarius. The New Moon in Sagittarius is the be ginning of a new cycle. New Moons represent new beginnings. New Moons are a time to set forth our intentions (goals and wishes) in all aspects of our lives. As we move forward, we can focus on goals and our choices for the New Year and make them happen!

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) — Happy birthday, Scorpio! You will be very busy with career demands. You will handle your new responsibilities with ease. However, there are critical trends in terms of commitment. Single people around you are focused on marriage. There seem to be a lot of emotional undertones between you and your partner. Try making more time for one another and resolving communication is sues.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 22)

Be careful not to splurge financially. You may experience financial setbacks and need an extra cushion to help later. However, do not let these things depress you; this is only a short term setback, and you will never bounce back.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 20) — You may find yourself in the spotlight over the next few months. Take advantage of this time and accept the at tention gracefully. A business opportunity could lead to a promising new relationship and financial gains.

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) — Your intelli gent approach will help you to accomplish many projects as we advance. Consider starting some business ventures as soon as you get yourself organized financially. Your verbal wit and good organizational abilities impress many. Your lover has some news to discuss with you. Consider breaking out the champagne. Enjoy the warm moments.

Pisces (February 20 – March 20) — Try not to be too quick to say yes or no. Be receptive to new possibilities. You can encounter excellent new relationships if you are in the right place at the right time. Follow your instincts. Your skills will accomplish what many cannot. Set a goal that is reasonably attainable at work.

Aries (March 21 – April 20) — You spend too much time making other people happy. Use the next couple of weeks to make yourself comfortable. If you need to make changes, then plan to do them. You will succeed with minimal fuss if you act quickly and aren't influenced by what others say. Ultimately you are the person who has to deal with their decisions and their consequences.

Taurus (April 21 – May 21) — You may feel more stressed out than usual. Let an understanding loved one soothe your soul. Let your mate take the lead when mak ing plans. You might be pleasantly surprised. You tend to be very romantic and do not stop thinking about slowing down. You need to move on and leave the past behind you. At work, use your verbal and writing skills to help you gain a financial advantage. There may be more than one way to arrive at the same place, so be flexible in at taining your objectives. It would be best if you had more zest in your life. Take the initiative to be spontaneous and get out and do things.

Healthy Habits for Mind & Body Restoration

With autumn colors now in full swing, along comes a renewed energy to enjoy the season and change of tem peratures. While the house may feel cozy inside, we know there are outside tasks that need to be accom plished before winter sets in. Usually the first few times we rake the fallen leaves, it is invigorating and the exer cise is welcomed. Not until the third week of doing this and the leaves keep coming do we often feel over whelmed to keep the lawn clean. It is important to keep both our mind and body feeling alert and invigorated, so here are five simple habits to adopt and keep following that the American Heart Association (AHA) offers.

Healthy Tips: “Routines can be a good way to pro vide structure and clarity during busy or stressful sea sons, so scheduling meals at home or regular exercise is not only good for physical health, but good for man aging stress as well.” 1. Unplug to connect: Try to eat regular meals at home with family, which is not always easy with children in sports or other after school activ

Gemini (May 22 – June 21) — You are in a par ticular phase to get things going. It is crucial to take stock of your life and your goals. Get rid of your clutter and get more organized. Use this win dow of opportunity for you. So use this time to make your wishes and dreams happen. Continue to follow your intuition in your love life. Make time for a more social life with friends and family.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22) — Try not to be ruled by your emotions and your zealous temperament. You have a creative nature that tends to make you react temperamentally. Take the time to listen to your head and not as much to your heart. Other wise, you will continue to make your life difficult. Why work so hard if you can work smart instead?

Leo (July 23 – August 23) — Before you relocate or involve yourself in extreme activities, recon sider dramatic extremes. When in doubt, do noth ing or go slowly. The fall to winter weather tends to make us a little melancholy, and sometimes we look in the wrong direction to lift our spirits. In stead, consider planning a small get together with friends and family. Candles and marshmallow toasting with movies will help recharge you and elevate your mood.

Apples, pears, squash, sweet potatoes, cabbage and other end of summer items add interest to your recipes. We find with the cooler weather now, more recipes that require the oven on makes the whole house feel cozier and the aroma is cer tainly a welcome greeting at dinner time. 5. But why wait till a holiday ar rives to think about what we are grateful for in our lives? Write down three things you’re grateful for each day, or reach out to a friend or family member and tell them how much you appreciate them. TO THE EDITOR...

The U.S. Postal Service has been hard at work preparing for the holiday season since January. Rest assured, we’re holiday ready and well prepared to deliver fast and reliable service to every address in Montauk, NY and across America.

USPS has made significant investments to ensure your holiday greeting cards and packages reach their intended destination on-time. We’ve added 249 new package sorting machines across the nation which will allow us to process 60 million packages per day. This new equipment is part of $40 billion in new investments made under Delivering for America, our 10-year plan to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence.

Additionally, we have the space we need to manage all packages and mail when they reach us. We’ve strategically expanded our footprint by 8.5 million square feet throughout the country to augment space shortages at existing postal facilities and we’ve deployed new technology on our workroom floors to make sure we can track and move mail and packages quickly and to get them on their way.

The 650,000 men and women of the U.S. Postal Service pride ourselves on playing an important role in delivering the holidays for the nation. We’ve had more than 100,000 part time employees convert to full time positions since January 2021. And there is still time to join our team for the holiday season. Open seasonal positions are posted at usps.com/hiring.

Thank you for continuing to support the Postal Service. Our Montauk Postal Service team wishes you a wonderful holiday season.

Thanksgiving Thoughts...

To make it easier on the host, a cousin’s in laws have always planned that all guests help with the meal. The host will make the turkey and stuffing and the rest of the guests decide who will bring an appetizer, salad, veggie sides, mashed potatoes and of course the desserts and wine. Everybody gets a chance to show off their favorite recipe and come with the item in a decorative dish that only needs to be heated. In the end, the host is more relaxed, the cost is shared and the dishes varied and delicious.

Not to be nagging about healthy eating on this feast day we all love, think about ways that help you not to go overboard during the meal. Try not to arrive at the host’s house really starving be cause you skipped breakfast. Eat a sensible morning meal with plenty of fruit and low in carbs choices. When appetizers are put out before the meal, nibble on some crunchy veggies rather than chips and dip or rich cheeses and crackers. If an assortment of al coholic beverages is being offered, remember they add calories, too. Have one or two drinks, and then switch to apple cider or seltzer. When the main meal arrives, have portion control, espe cially with the stuffing, mashed potatoes and crescent rolls. Re member desserts are on the way afterwards, so you want to have room for them, too.

Thanksgiving Trivia: Here is something to share with guests around the table or with school students to refresh or introduce a bit of Thanksgiving history. When was the first Thanksgiving? It took place in early December in 1619. Why did the Pilgrims have this famous meal in such cold weather in Plymouth, Massachu setts? The reason was to celebrate the harvest season when all the crops had been gathered and stored and prepared for the winter months. Root cellars were created that kept the produce cool, with out freezing. Meats and fruits were dried so they could be eaten all winter long. Speaking of meats, most historians believe that turkey was not even eaten at the first Thanksgiving Day meal. Probably seafood like lobster and other fish popular in the New England wa ters were the main staples of the meal. Turkey was introduced as the family’s centerpiece most likely around 1863 when President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday. By the way, did you know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be our national bird and not the eagle? I can’t even imagine that and we all know the eagle is more majestic, fierce and a strong symbol of our country. In closing, we wish all our Montauk Sun readers a very happy and Blessed Thanksgiving Holiday!

also about the many powerful and “gutsy” women who inspired them. In one of the episodes, which they showed on a big screen, Hillary and Chelsea go on adventures with some of the world’s most powerful women, who are ac tivists, artists, and community leaders, doing ex traordinary things. Donna Karan asked Chelsea what made her create this, and she replied that there were lots of gutsy women in her family, from her mother to her grandmothers on both sides.

“When I grew up in the 1980’s both my par ents were public figures, but even in the 1990’s when we lived in the White House, they managed to make time for me and I never doubted that I was the most important part of their lives,” she said. “Now that I’ve become a Mom I realize how hard it is, and now the most important role I have is to be a mother to my three kids.”

In the film, Chelsea and Hillary were cooking in the kitchen, going through old photo albums, and meeting other influential women, like Goldie Hawn and her daughter, Kate Hudson, and others. They shared stories about motherhood, social is sues and passions.

Chelsea talked about the need for women to also follow their passions in helping to make the world a better place—to get involved in their own communities social issues. Mariska Hargitay, who exemplifies this with her activist work, is also in one of the “Gutsy” episodes.

Speaking of “Gutsy Women,” one of the most fun and informative parts of this festival is to at tend the New York Women in Film (NYWIFT) brunch at the Mulford Farm in East Hampton. This lovely brunch, outdoors on the lawn under a tent, is a great networking event for all the women filmmakers to come together, before showing some of their short films at the theater. Cynthia Lopez, CEO of this organization, based in NYC, spoke about the importance of their work

as more women are breaking into the industry.

“We urge more women to join our organiza tion, to get inspired and learn more about how you can learn and contribute,” she said. “We have some great women filmmakers here with us today, and we are honoring them at this festival.”

Leslie Fields, President of the NYWIFT Board, also spoke, about how people should get in volved.

What I like most about this festival, is a chance to see independent films that explore and show us different lifestyles from around the world, that you may not expect and may not see in mass theaters.

At this brunch, I met filmmakers Ivete Lucas and her husband Patrick Bresnan, who produced and directed a unique documentary feature called “Naked Gardens. It’s a slice of life at an in teresting nudist resort in the Florida everglades. It was done respectfully to show the lifestyle of people choosing to be there for different reasons from affordability, to the naturist life, to healing from past trauma. It was filmed over one season at their campsite, and culminates in their annual Mid Winter Naturist Festival. Through their un obtrusive style, Lucas and Bresnan capture some fascinating characters, personal profiles, and con versations, set amongst some beautifully filmed lush tropical landscapes.

Randy Mastro, HIFF Chairman, said he was excited to be at the 30th Hamptons FilmFest. “It’s a reflection on how far we’ve come,” he said. “First we were the little festival that could, and now we’re the Telluride of the East.” Mastro, a self proclaimed movie buff, said, “Many of our films have premiered here, and gone on to win Academy Awards.” He looks forward to next year’s event.

Detlev Zimmerman...

survived to talk about it. Both loved Montauk and the sea. Both were married for at least 50 years, until they were widowed, had at least 3 children, 6 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

As a contributing writer and photographer for this paper of the column “At The Senior Nutrition Center,” I re member inviting Detlev, pre Covid days, to come to the end of the month’s birthday cake celebration. His answer was: “Yes,” but added: “Make sure that my name is spelled correctly.” I assured Detlev that I always double and triple check my work, so there was no chance of misspelling his name. The next time I saw Detlev, I asked him: “How did you like your picture in the paper?” He replied: “ I liked it, but you misspelled my name.” I told him, that I couldn’t have done that, but when I reread the paper, Detlev was right. I was missing the extra “N” at the end of his name. Needless to say, this reporter apologized.

At the memorial service, Pastor William Hoffmann, confessed: “I didn’t know Detlev Zimmermann well. Whenever I visited Ruth in their Montauk home when she was ill, I often saw Detlev watching German television in the living room, while Ruth and I sat in the kitchen and talked. Eventually, Detlev warmed up to me when he found out that we both had something in common.” "My first name happens to be Wilhelm in German and my last

name was also spelled with two “N’s.” The congregation laughed.

Pastor Bill looked out towards the empty, back row and called Ruth’s name as if she were there. I felt she was there. Teary eyed, daughter Ursula recalled fond memo ries of her beloved Papi, who owned a trucking business in New Jersey. “At the age of 8, my papi would pick me up after school and we would both go for a nice ride in Ram sey.” She also, remembered, the day she got her driver’s license…Papi let her drive the truck. She closed by apol ogizing to Papi for disobeying his wishes of not giving him a memorial service. She continued by saying: “I’m sorry Papi, but your family and friends needed to say good bye to you and needed to tell you how much you are loved.” Son, Rowland also said a few words, followed by a next door neighbor and myself.

“Edelweiss” a song from the “The Sound of Music”, Detlev’s favorite, was sung by Debbie Coen with her gui tar, followed by the MCC’s version that was sung, by the congregation, in previous years, at the end of each service, while holding hands. After the service the guests were invited to the church’s auditorium, for refreshments and eats and to continue Detlev’s full and exciting celebration of life.

Detlev died peacefully on March 13, 2022 at the age of 95. Born in Krolow, Pomarania, Germany on June 21, 1926 from the son of Otto Friedrich Zimmermann and Charlotte Elisabeth Margarete Zimmermann (b.Pagel). His wife Ruth, daughter Helga Gray, sister Gisela Hager and grandson Kevin Zimmermann predeceased him. He

Detlev served and survived two submarine mishaps during WWII as a Lieutenant and Second Lieutenant. The U boat he was on was destroyed by the British. He was one of the four survivors, out of a crew of more than 50. He earned the Iron Cross on a mission to the Port of Mur mansk in Russia where his submarine was entangled in an anti netting and he was part of the team that freed the sub. After the war, he spent two years as a POW in France and rescued his mother from communist East Germany. In 1951, he immigrated to the U.S. and was later joined by Ruth, a year later.

Detlev worked in the trucking industry for 30 years and was an owner operator of an auto transport carrier. He also volunteered in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for an other 30 years. Six days after his passing, on March 19 of this year, Detlev’s family and friends gathered at Edwards Funeral Chapel in Suffern, N.Y.

Detlev loved Montauk and the sea because it re minded him of his childhood years, near the Baltic Sea. Montauk loved you too, Detlev. We will always remember your million dollar smile and your piercing, blue eyes. Our pain is lessened knowing that you and Ruth are together again. May you rest in peace.
