Continued from Page 13 Dear EarthTalk: We often see and read reports about environmental threats to women’s health, but aren’t there also concerns about which men should be especially vigilant? ~ Jay Walsh, Boston, MA Indeed, women aren’t the only ones who should be worried about environmental threats. A recently released report (“Men’s Health: What You Don’t Know Might Hurt You”) by the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) concludes that environmental exposures may have major negative impacts on men’s health as well, and outlines ways that guys can avoid some of the major risks. “Most men understand that smart lifestyle choices—such as exercising regularly, eating a healthful diet and not smoking—make a big difference in staying healthy,” says EWG researcher and report author Paul Pestano. “However, what many men might not know is that research in the last few decades has shown that environmental exposures may contribute to major diseases and health concerns that especially affect men, including heart disease, prostate cancer and infertility.” He adds that toxic substances in drinking water, food, food packaging and personal care products have all been linked to serious health problems that affect millions of American men. According to EWG, men’s heart disease risks are exacerbated by exposure to mercury in certain seafoods, Teflon chemicals in non-stick cookware, and bisphenolA (BPA) in hard plastic containers and canned foods. Additionally, arsenic and lead in drinking water supplies is a contributing factor in elevated heart disease risks for men. Meanwhile, certain agricultural pesticides common on fruits and vegetables as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that build up in meat and dairy products have been associated with prostate cancer, the second most common cause of cancer for American men. And exposures to lead, pesticides and

Some tips include: • investing in a water filter system specifically designed to reduce exposure to lead, arsenic and other drinking water contaminants (see EWG’s “Water Filter Buying Guide” to find the right one); • avoiding canned foods and plastic containers with the recycling code #7 to limit BPA exposure; • using personal care products that don’t contain phthalates, parabens or other potential contaminants (see EWG’s “Skin Deep” database that lists toxic chemicals in some 69,000 personal care products); • choosing conventionally grown fruits and vegetables that have the fewest pesticide residues and buying the organic versions of certain types of produce that otherwise rely heavily on chemicals (EWG’s “Dirty Dozen” guide lists apples, grapes, strawberries, celery, peaches, spinach and sweet bell peppers as the worst offenders among others); and • using proper sun cover and getting regular skin checks with a dermatologist to reduce melanoma risks. By following these guidelines along with eating a healthy, varied diet and getting regular exercise, men can significantly reduce their health risks and potentially add years to their lives. LABOR DAY... Where Did It Come From? Did you ever wonder what Labor Day is all about? Besides flipping burgers and eating potato salad? Well, I did, so I went to the U.S. Department of Labor to see what they knew. Here it is: Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. Taking place among the charming seaside historic villages of Long Island's East End, the Hamptons International Film Festival's intimate, informal atmosphere makes the festival an ideal destination for cinephiles. Movie goers can purchase all inclusive passes that allow admittance to any film of their choice, workshops, lectures, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Conversations withâ&#x20AC;? as well as parties with the industryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s filmmakers, actors and directors. Tickets for individual movies are also available for purchase, with buyers picking their own selection either in advance or on the day of the showing. We have been attending this event for over ten years and one of our favorite parts of the five day festival is the chance to meet the people involved in the films. After many of the films are shown there is a Q & A session where several of the people involved in the making of the film are in the theatre to answer questions from the audience. This may include the actors, writer, director or producer. Did you ever watch a film and wonder, â&#x20AC;&#x153;how did they come up with an idea for that movie?â&#x20AC;? Or â&#x20AC;&#x153;why did the character do a particular action?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why did the writer end the film that way?â&#x20AC;? Many people have wonder what the actors did to prepare for the role or how did they train for the part, especially if a certain talent was involved, like as playing an instrument, dancing or something physically challenging. All of these questions finally get answers at these stimulating after viewing conversations. Over the years we have seen films at HIFF that have gone on to become box office hits and many of them have been Academy Award winners or nominees. HIFF calls these films that are predicted to become nationally or world known â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spotlight Filmsâ&#x20AC;? and their picks have been on target. In 2010 it was a particularly successful festival with the premiere of The Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Speech, The Black Swan and 127 Hours. The following year, The Artist was 2011â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s breakout film and in 2012 came Silver Linings Playbook and ARGO. Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s picks for the 2013 festival included 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska and Osage County, which were also award winners. The HIFF is also a chance to feel like part of the events often seen on television in Hollywood such as red carpet walks, celebrity interviews and world film premieres. All this takes place right here in the Hamptons. Autumn colors start to peak, temperatures are still comfortable, seasonal produce appears on menus and lodging establishments are still warmly entertaining their guests. What better time to visit the East End than during the five days featuring award winning films produced by acclaimed talents in the industry?
