Sunday, September 11 at 3:30: BEAM ME UP: Fifty Years of STAR TREK Guest Speaker, Clive Young Star Trek celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016, and Beam Me Up traces the fascinating creation of the best-known science fiction franchise of all-time. This fast-paced, 90 Minute multimedia program explores how creator Gene Roddenberry first envisioned the original TV show as a Western in space, and then steadily built a team of legendary actors, brilliant writers and clear-sighted directors who brought the original crew’s story to life across a TV series, animated children’s show and six feature films between 1966 and 1991. Aimed at both beginner and longtime fans, the program follows Star Trek‘s long, tumultuous history and its continuing impact on pop culture around the world. Clive Young is an author/lecturer covering the crossroads between high tech and popular culture. While he has covered the music industry for 20 years at Pro Sound News, he has also written for MTV, VH1, American Songwriter, Music Business International, Wine Enthusiast and other outlets. His latest book, Homemade Hollywood, covers the history of amateur genre filmmaking, and received rave reviews from Total Film, the Times Literary Supplement and others.
Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 pm: Flamenco! Guest Artists: Elisabet Torras Aguilera, dancer; and Francisco Roldán, classical guitarist Flamenco! is a dazzling program that combines dance and music from Spain, Colombia, Italy and Paraguay including compositions by Giuliani, Moreno-Torroba,Barrios, Rodrigo, Montaña, Sanz, Tárrega,and Isaac Albéniz, Colombian-born guitarist Francisco Roldán is a well-known classical guitarist who performs solo and chamber music nationally and internationally at top venues and international festivals, and at various universities and libraries. He earned his Master's Degree in Performance from the Mannes College of Music and augmented his studies by playing in master classes for Manuel Barrueco, Sharon Isbin, David Russell, and Paul Odette. His 1993 debut recital at Carnegie Hall launched his career as a soloist. Francisco Roldán is on the faculty of the Mannes College of Music Extension and Preparatory Divisions, New Jersey City University and at Lehman College, City University of New York. In recent years, has performed numerous times at the Montauk Library as a soloist and in conjunction with other artists such as The Mosaic Trio and ZigZag Quartet. Dancer, Elisabet Torras Aguilera was born in Barcelona where she studied Flamenco and Danza Española at the Conservatory of Dance and Theatre and continued her studies in Madrid. She toured Europe and Asia with Zarzuela, Clasico Espanyol and
Flamenco companies. She performed at El Patio Andaluz, El Palacio del Flamenco in Barcelona and El Tablao de la Chus in Almería. In 2009, she was a featured artist at “Viva España” in Moscow and the “Presidence Belge” in Brussels. She toured Spain and China with Manolo Carrasco’s company, performed several seasons with Javier Latorre’s Somorrostro Dansa Flamenca Company and danced for Rojas & Rodriguez Company in Madrid in 2011. Since 2013 Elisabet is a frequent performer at Alegrias la Nacional and other stages in NYC and the TriState Area and has performed with the New York based companies A Palo Seco and Noche Flamenca
Sunday, September 25 at 3:30 pm: Masterworks Works for Piano: Mozart, Schubert and Chopin Qyuhn Ngyen, classical pianist Distinguished Vietnamese-American pianist, Quyhn Ngyen (Nguyễn Thuý Quỳnh) will perform a concert of classical works including:Mozart's Piano Sonata in B flat major, K. 333;Schubert's Impromptus Op. 90 D. 899; Chopin's Ballade No. 3 in A-flat major, Op. 47 and his Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillante in E flat Major, Op. 22. Ms. Ngyen has performed extensively throughout the USA, Europe, and Asia in notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center; the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.; the Berlin Konzerthause ; and the Grand Opera House in Hanoi, among many others. Critic Harris Goldsmith compared her to Ignaz Friedman, Murray Perahia, and Arthur Rubinstein.serves on the piano faculty of Hunter College and the International Keyboard Institute and Festival at Mannes College of Music in New York City. Saturday, October 1 at 7:30 pm: 'Gershwin: Double Life of an American Icon' Guest Artist: Alexander Wu, classical jazz pianist 'Gershwin: Double Life of an American Icon' is a retrospective that delves into the fascinating life and music career of one of America’s most original and celebrated figures. From his youth George Gershwin started out as a song-plugger on Tin Pan Alley, but as he was continuing to gain more success writing popular music for the stage and later Hollywood, he began to lead a double life striving to also make his mark as a serious composer. Yamaha Piano Artist, Alexander Wu performs, interspersed with anecdotes and commentary, and brings to life a unique collection of the composer’s earlier piano pieces to his Broadway songs and serious works that include Rhapsody in Blue. “Wu’s exuberant etudes on Gershwin songs sounded assured and settled…he is uncommonly attractive and entertaining” –The Washington Post Review

Montauk Observatory September Events On September 29, 2016, The Montauk Observatory, a non-profit astronomy group, will present a free lecture, "Cosmic Rays: Heavens, It's Raining Particles!"
