Meet Dalton Portella, our cover photographer this month! Dalton Portella was born in Miami, Florida April 4th 1958. He lived there until the age of 12 when, after divorcing his father, his mother moved him and his three sisters to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has been drawing and painting most of his life, starting in Miami taking Art classes on weekends as a young boy. Continuing through High School in Brazil and on to United States International University in San Diego where he majored in Art. After a year he moved north to Santa Cruz and attended Cabrillo College briefly before transferring to Parsons School of Design in New York. Dalton lived in New York City for twenty years, painting continuosly and working commercially as a freelancer for Miramax for the last ten, retouching their posters and more recently branching into design. In 2001 he moved to Montauk,NY.

This David Chase film has music taking center stage in this 1960’s coming of age film. Teenage boys in Jersey want to start a rock band against their parent’s wishes. Director/screenwriter David Chase, Soprano creator, brings in Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band as music supervisor to give the film a true rock feel. Chase’s bio notes he had a love for music way before creative writing. Although not totally “autobiographical”, as heard in the Q & A with Chase, Van Zandt and several actors in the film, there are enough coincidences that mirror Chase’s teenage life so it certainly feels that way. A strong cast including John Magaro, James Gandolfini, Jack Huston, Will Brill, Bella Heathcote, Brad Garrett and Christopher McDonald add to the authenticity of this slice of the “good old days”. Conversation With... by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel Imagine a living room setting, close proximity to a world famous celebrity and listening to fascinating details about that person’s life and career and you have the basis for the Hampton International Film Festival’s (HIFF) Conversation With program. Hosted and moderated each year by the talented, award winning actor, conversationalist, Alec Baldwin, this event is consistently well attended. With Richard Gere as this year’s guest, the venue was sold out immediately after the HIFF tickets went on sale! The program opened with a welcome by David Nugent, HIFF Director of Programming, followed by a series of film clips of Gere’s work. Watching them in sequence viewers realize the depth of the actor’s long career, versatile roles and range both comedic and serious. At the conclusion of the film biography clips, Mr. Baldwin came on stage to introduce and welcome Gere. Still handsome with his longish styled grey hair, slim jeans, button down and sports jacket, Gere was received with a thunderous applauds from the audience. For over an hour and half it was Baldwin and Gere chatting and covering topics about Gere’s long time career. Baldwin has a keen knack for keeping the conversation going and lively with his good sense of humor and timing, which was a nice contrast to the somewhat reserved and quiet Gere. At one point Gere looked down at his phone to check a message and Baldwin teased him about it. With a broad smile Gere related it was from his son, reminding him about an important ball game that was on early the next morning. Gere shared that he has been his son’s team’s coach for the last seven years. This tidbit in passing showed a warm side to the personal life of this celebrated film star. Mr. Baldwin’s questions asking were there any roles you turned down that you regretted and was it because you couldn’t relate to the part or the project, or what field would you prefer to be in if you weren’t an actor, kept the pace going throughout the interview. One of the nicest responses to a question was “what role do you think is the most important one you have had?” Without hesitation, Mr. Gere, responded, “being a father to my son”, which was met by yet another enthusiastic round of applause by the audience. 30 ~ November 2012 ~ The Montauk Sun

The Details-Toby Maguire plays against type as a doctor whose life gets out of control. The film delves into the identity of the rider and why did she kill him. Then comes the unexpected arrival of the woman’s older brother that everybody thought died in the Civil War. The siblings reunite, but questions and suspicions arise about the murder on the ranch, why the brother was thought dead and why the woman and shifty husband want to leave the farm so quickly. It’s a modern day “who done it” set in the Wild West. Director/Screenwriter Jared Moshe’s love for this time period, detail to setting and character study make this a totally different western than you have ever seen before. Well done! Tribute to Ann Roth It was certainly a red carpet event as movie goers lined up outside of Guild Hall, East Hampton, ready to enter the theatre. On the red carpet was a huge, golden statue of the famed “Oscar” standing next to the HIFF signage. This was the area welcoming the legendary costume designer, Ann Roth who was receiving an award for Lifetime Achievement in Costume Design. Special guests to the event were Nathan Lane and Mike Nichols, hosted by CNN’s Alina Cho. Inside the stage was set with a sofa, overstuffed chairs and three life-sized mannequins dressed in some of the outfits Roth designed that were on loan from Meryl Streep. The program began with an introduction by Jeffrey Sharp, a HIFF co-founder, followed by clips from movies featuring Roth’s designs. The list was impressive as scenes from some of the top, award winning films flashed on screen. After the viewing moderator Alina Cho, welcome Ann Roth to the stage and began the interview. Quite humble in discussing her achievements, Roth was exceptionally modest at the word “legendary”. Ms. Cho said she was told ahead of time that this word made Roth slightly uncomfortable. But the fact remains her work garnered an Oscar for The English Patient. Roth has been in the industry for six decades, with over 100 films to her name. During the interview it was shared that her success can also be attributed to the minute detail Roth goes into with each outfit she creates. She related how she decides exactly what the character will wear based on the person portrayed, their lifestyle and circumstance. Roth has worked with such artists as Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman, Dolly Parton, Nathan Lane, Dustin Hoffman, John Voight and Daniel Day-Lewis to name only a few over the years. The conversation took a decidedly upbeat turn and comedic slant when stage and screen actor, Nathan Lane come out to join the tribute. His monologue about Ann was priceless and the audience laughed enthusiastically at his humorous remarks, poking gentle jabs at Ms. Roth. Lane mentioned the fact, as stated earlier by Ms. Cho, that Ann Roth does not like to be called a “legend”. In his deadpan style, Lane insisted, turning slightly toward Roth who was seated on a sofa behind him, “we are not here to pay tribute to a so-so designer”! Lane also looked at the three mannequins on stage and told the audience “these dresses are owned by Meryl Streep and kept in a climate controlled vault…the same vault Meryl is kept in”.
