Fishing Montauk with Capt. Skip Once again, another great report hits the press! This season continues with great fishing and great weather. Even with the Fluking being sluggish this year, the Pie Plate Porgies and Black sea Bass, still made bottom fishing very enjoyable. Frisby, Cartwright, West grounds, Flats, Elbow, all producing good action. Striped Bass are still biting on the live eels at the Slot, Elbow, and the Porgy Lump. Good sized ones at that. If you want to Diamond Jig them the Elbow and North rips is a safe bet, just look for the birds going mad on the surface. Offshore, the Sharking is still producing good action with some nice Mako and even Threshers still being caught. Last Full moon saw great Tuna fishing at the East wall of the Hudson Canyon. Nice Big Eye and Yellowfin Tuna were chewing heavy. If you were there you caught, regardless of your skill level. Some nice Broadbill Swordfish were caught as well. An early Northwest wind came 3 days after the full moon and shut everything down. But it was epic while they bit! Got lots of bait all around the point, looking like it's going to be an action packed Fall Run, so get out there and have some fun!

by Capt. Michael Potts It is supposed to happen in October, but the Stripers didn't know it. Not that fishing was not good before that date; enough 10 to 20 pounders were trolled and some 30 to 40 pounders were taken on eels. But on September 25, boats arriving off the lighthouse found Stripers all over the top. The feed was on for the fish - mostly 10 to 20 pounders. They ate parachute lures, polynose, diamond jigs, eels, flies, casting lures, and whatever was alive that they were eating. Virtually every boat out there caught their legal limit and released some. We are hopeful that this event is a good indication for the rest of the season.
Star Island Yacht Club Striped Bass Tournament The Tournament fishing day will be Sunday October 7. Last year the Tournament Awarded over $25,000 between cash prizes and the calcuttas. Different this year: There are separate categories for Recreational and Charter Boats with separate prize kittys. If you want to compete, but don't have your own boat, the Charter Boat Category is perfect. Be sure to get in on the calcuttas; it is a bummer to catch a winner and not be in the bigger money for a couple of hundred dollar investment. Keep an eye open for some of the past winners who can be considered favorites: the Elizabeth, the Windy, the Caprice, the Herls Girl, and Hugh Chancey.
Other Fall Prospects Porgy fishing is hot and may remain open until New Years. Seabass fishing is also excellent. Last year the fishery was fantastic until it closed on December 31. Blackfish. To prevent a bag limit cutback from last year's 4 per person, the fishing community accepted a minimum size limit increase to 16 inches, but the short season now opens October 8 and closes early on December 4. Get out there soon! ~ Capt. Michael Potts Fishing Vessel Blue Fin IV The Montauk Sun • October 2012 • 5

Insightful Impressions Astrology Outlook by Francine Tesler Libra (Sept 23 – Oct 22): Happy birthday Libra! Libra is associated with balance and harmony. You tend to create harmony, balance and cooperation with all. This is no easy task. Libra is charming, and an easy conservationist. You are a chameleon in any social situation. This ability gets you many job offers. Everyone wants you to join his or her company. You will be torn between making more money and spending more time with your family. There really isn’t a halfway point-it has to be one way or the other. Decide which is more important to you at this particular moment in time and give it everything you’ve got. You need to focus on one thing at a time. Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21): There maybe more than one way to the same place, so be flexible in attaining your objectives. You need more excitement in your home life, take initiative to be spontaneous and get out and do things. Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 22): If you are patient and have the dreams, all is possible. An important opportunity comes this week. Give it your all and deliver your best. The rewards can be great. A compelling decision can change a relationship. Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 20): Laugh things off when others take things to seriously this keeps you young and full of energy. Make an example of yourself by doing. Show others how to let go and have a blast. A Taurus or Aries are good matches for light dating. Aquarius (Jan 21 – Feb 19): For Aquarius working under pressure is who you are. This is expressed best creatively. Apply this in career and romance. A positive channeling of your energy helps you think with a clear head. Write draw paint, make music about your special someone or special project at work. Follow your intuition and act upon it. Pisces (Feb 20 – March 20): Spontaneous trips help re-spark love. A romantic relationship intensifies as true feelings are expressed. Your love life becomes very exciting and active this week. Your positive self-image helps others to recognize your talents at work. Learn not to start more than two projects at work. This way you can complete then precisely. Aries (March 21 – April 20): This is a good week to go on interviews. Show others that you mean business. Enthusiasm makes all the difference in getting what you want: promotion love relationships and respect form others. Finances may improve over the next few weeks. Taurus (April 21 – May 21): There is a sense that something special is about to happen. Because of prior disappointments, limit your expectations. Be prepared however, to enjoy the rewards of your toils. Gemini (May 22 – June 21): You need to resolve past romantic feelings. Letting go of the past is the first step in going forward. Having someone on shelf is false security. Quality not quantity is a key to
a prosperous love and economic life. Cancer (June 22 – July 22): The intensity of your feelings will surprise you this week. These feelings are not likely to subside over the next month. You tend to bottle up your emotions. Sooner or later they may explode. As a water sign-you can also be reckless when you encounter something you desire. Learn to slowly release your pent-up feelings. Leo (July 23 – Aug 23): You don’t have to limit your affections. You have to learn to be a bit more discerning about whom you show warmth and regard for. You have much energy and goodness to go around, so save these feelings for people who really mean something to you. Virgo (Aug 24 – Sept 22): Your eye for details gets you noticed. Coworkers and friends may be threatened by your success. To combat this, be generous with your time and listening skills.

Poetry Corner with Lawrence Spiro This poem was inspired by the natural beauty of Montauk. I enjoyed a pleasant walk through Camp Hero. If you haven’t done so, I recommend it. Fort Hero has trails that end at the precipitous of a cliff that overlooks the Atlantic (be careful). You can find all about Montauk’s botanical wonders by going to www.natureplants.net. This site belongs to the Fort Pond Nursery in Montauk. It has gorgeous pictures of indigenous plants, trees, shrubs and grasses. The nursery itself occupies about 1 acre of wonderful local botanical delights. Ask for Matt Stedman, who is very knowledgeable. Whatever you need to know about fish, big or small, go to Paulies Tackle on Edgemere Street. Paulie knows everything that lives on or in the waters of Montauk. Another site is; montaukvacations.com/parks.htm. It lists many interesting local parks and places of interest. If you have any questions or comments, e-mail me at larryspiro@aol.com and include permission to publish if you are so inclined.
Allow me to walk you through Lawrence Spiro Observe angel #1 guide the Tern in a steep dive from the sky towards the waters where the Sand Eels thrive. Angel #2 carefully grooms the rapid Piping Clover, while angel #3 sifts a white grain of sand over and over. Careful not to bend the Little Blue Blade into the rose. This grass shines with Angel #4 sweat that sweetly flows. Angel #5 plumps the Beach Plum under the blue white air. Angel #6 pushes the cloud towards the sun’s hot glare. Angel #7 perfectly sets the Shab Tree leaf for display. The Blue Berry Bush, is where angel #8 works the day. Each angel has one purpose alone and prepares one task. Each angel performs with devotion, without the need to ask. They serve their master without protest of voice, We serve too but with a voice and with a choice. Look at angel #9 rounding the sea rockCharged to changing rock to precious stock. Our charge too, is to change stones into precious gems By finishing our words to supplicate and amend. From the Editors of E/The Environmental Magazine Dear EarthTalk: Which are the most eco-friendly and nontoxic (to people, cats and sanitation systems) cat litters? ~ Sam Barnes, Macon, GA
It makes sense that environmentally enlightened cat owners would want cat litter made from natural products that will not potentially compromise their health or that of their beloved pets. Many mass market cat litters contain significant amounts of silica dust which has been linked to upper respiratory issues in cats and even humans. Likewise, the chemical fragrances in many cat litters can also be toxic to cats. Yet another issue is the sodium bentonite clay in “clumping” cat litters. The fact that this type of clay can swell up to 15 times its original volume when a cat urinates or defecates into it makes it an excellent cat litter substrate, as waste clumps can be scooped out and filled in without changing the entire litter box. But when cats ingest this material it can cause gastrointestinal distress that in some cases can lead to death. Also, the clay commonly used can be derived from environmentally destructive strip mining. But thanks to increased concern for cats’ health and the environment, there are plenty of greener options out
there. To wit, Yesterday’s News cat litter is made from recycled newspaper and is reportedly three times more absorbent than clay. It is non-toxic and contains no scented fragrances, but its makers say it is still tough on odors, and is 99.7 percent dust-free. It also comes in recyclable paper packaging. Wood shavings and sawdust also make good cat litter substrates. NEPCO’s Cedarific Natural Cat Litter is a blend of hardwood and cedar chips with no clay or silica dust. Besides being inexpensive, it is easy to handle, has a pleasant odor, and is biodegradable and compostable. Other wood/sawdust alternatives include Feline Pine, which is made from dust-free pine chips, and Better Way Cat Litter, which combines clay with cedar chips for natural odor control. Yet another great choice is Eco-Shell’s Purr & Simple Cat Litter, made from a proprietary blend of fibrous material from annually renewable tree-nut crops. SwheatScoop Natural Wheat Litter keeps odors at bay through the power of natural enzymes in renewable wheat crops; it is low-dust and low-tracking besides being biodegradable and compostable. Meanwhile, World’s Best Cat Litter is made from whole kernel corn. And Benevo Cat Litter is made from nongenetically modified maize and other vegetable derivatives. Frugal eco-conscious cat owners might consider making their own cat litter by repurposing everyday materials that would otherwise end up in the waste stream. Plain sawdust

makes great cat litter, but doesn’t control odor as well as other substrates and might be hard to find in urban areas. The website treehugger.com offers instructions on how to turn old newspapers into cat litter; the process is a bit involved but can save money while extending the life of discarded newsprint. Cat litter made from natural materials can also be composted as a way to reduce waste while creating rich soil for the garden. The Glenbrook North Zero Waste Blog in Vancouver, BC provides instructions on how to get healthy compost from cat litter derived from wood, sawdust or vegetable products. annual Greendex study. “That’s despite Chinese and Indian consumers also being among the least confident that individual action can help the environment.” Readers can discover how they stack up by taking a survey on National Geographic’s Greendex website. But brace yourself if you are a typical American: You might not like what you find out about yourself. Dear EarthTalk: I read that a single child born in the U.S. has a greater effect on the environment than a dozen children born in a developing country? Can you explain why? ~ Josh C., via e-mail It is well known that Americans consume far more natural resources and live much less sustainably than people from any other large country of the world. “A child born in the United States will create thirteen times as much ecological damage over the course of his or her lifetime than a child born in Brazil,” reports the Sierra Club’s Dave Tilford, adding that the average American will drain as many resources as 35 natives of India and consume 53 times more goods and services than someone from China. Tilford cites a litany of sobering statistics showing just how profligate Americans have been in using and abusing natural resources. For example, between 1900 and 1989 U.S. population tripled while its use of raw materials grew by a factor of 17. “With less than 5 percent of world population, the U.S. uses one-third of the world’s paper, a quarter of the world’s oil, 23 percent of the coal, 27 percent of the aluminum, and 19 percent of the copper,” he reports. “Our per capita use of energy, metals, minerals, forest products, fish, grains, meat, and even fresh water dwarfs that of people living in the developing world.” He adds that the U.S. ranks highest in most consumer categories by a considerable margin, even among industrial nations. To wit, American fossil fuel consumption is double that of the average resident of Great Britain and two and a half times that of the average Japanese. Meanwhile, Americans account for only five percent of the world’s population but create half of the globe’s solid waste. Americans’ love of the private automobile constitutes a large part of their poor ranking. The National Geographic Society’s annual Greendex analysis of global consumption habits finds that Americans are least likely of all people to use public transportation— only seven percent make use of transit options for daily commuting. Likewise, only one in three Americans walks or bikes to their destinations, as opposed to three-quarters of Chinese. While China is becoming the world’s leader in total consumption of some commodities (coal, copper, etc.), the U.S. remains the per capita consumption leader for most resources. Overall, National Geographic’s Greendex found that American consumers rank last of 17 countries surveyed in regard to sustainable behavior. Furthermore, the study found that U.S. consumers are among the least likely to feel guilty about the impact they have on the environment, yet they are near to top of the list in believing that individual choices could make a difference. Paradoxically, those with the lightest environmental footprint are also the most likely to feel both guilty and disempowered. “In what may be a major disconnect between perception and behavior, the study also shows that consumers who feel the guiltiest about their impact—those in China, India and Brazil—actually lead the pack in sustainable consumer choices,” says National Geographic’s Terry Garcia, who coordinates the

there was a footpath we now call Montauk Highway, named after the Montauketts who inhabited “The End”. Their blood still runs through the veins of a few local characters who live around here...just something to think about the next time you stroll the open lands of this pristine peninsula.

Montauk & the Local Surfer by Debra Rose If you are a local surfer in Montauk, chances are you breathed a sigh of relief when summer ended. Weekend sharehouse warriors are back in the city for the fall, so you can have those legendary swells of September all to your self, right? This year September weekends have been gorgeous and the surf stellar, filling parking lots since Labor Day. The crowded line-up still lingers. What is a local to do? Travel, of course. You have all winter to wear the hood, boots and gloves, so why not plan your next surfing adventure and trunk it in the off-season? Step outside the comfort zone of the East End and choose one of the amazing surf spots this planet has to offer. The caveat? You are no longer a local, and it may help bring about a new perspective to surfing. Territorial by nature, surfers can only progress in their surfing by trying different spots, conditions and climates. The level of “localism” you may experience depends on where you go, your attitude and abundance of waves. You may take it for granted that “your break” is akin to your back yard, with familiar faces in the water and knowledge of the sandbars, rocks and areas in which to paddle in and out. Admit it, there has been a time you believed you had the right of way just because you are a local. At it’s worst, localism can be a fight in the line-up, at best it is dropping in on non-local surfers. What is behind this madness? Fear. Similar to Montauk itself, there is a fear that your break will be discovered, overrun and ruined. So who are the locals in Montauk or abroad? If you can walk to the beach, have surfed there the longest, or surf often but do not live nearby, you could be a local surfer. It’s a safe assumption to respect
everyone in the water, local or otherwise. Dropping in is a no-no anyway, and especially does not score points when surfing a new spot on a surf trip. A friend of ours learned this the hard way in Puerto Rico, when he dropped in on a local. A fistfight would have ensued if it were not for the speed at which our friend was able to paddle away from the line-up. Figuring out where to surf a new break is another way to show respect. After catching a wave, it is beneficial to wait your turn and not hog the inside position right away to catch the next wave. British friends of ours took it a step further by only riding the “white wash,” or whitewater in Morocco, brilliantly staying out of everyone’s way and enjoying themselves without worry that they were out of place. If white water is not your thing, observe which surfers seem to know a lot of people in the line-up and appear to know what they are doing. Apply those rules of surfing even more when you are new. You have a right to be in the water, just as nonlocals may have a right to try your break. When you return home, you just may change your perspective. Locals abroad may be aggressive no matter what, and chances are it is not about you anyway. You may even learn that non-locals are not the threat you once believed; if you are a local and know the break well, you will catch more waves, more often. No matter where you are, surfing is so supposed to be fun, so smile. Even if it is at a non-local.

Stuffed Sugar Pumpkins
This is a great time of year to make sugar pumpkins. They are small and sweet and go wonderful alone or with any autumn dish. Be sure to buy sugar pumpkins that are 6-8 inches in diameter. Sugar pumpkins are also known as pie pumpkins or cooking pumpkins. The pumpkin should be free of bruises and cracks and have a dark orange skin. The texture of the skin should be dull, not shiny. 1 sugar pumpkin about 3 lbs. Kosher salt. Fresh ground black pepper. Ground cinnamon. 2 cups whole grain bread cut into 1/2 in. chunks. 1 or 2 cooked vegan sausage, chopped. 1/4 cup coarsely chopped toasted walnuts. 2 tbsp. dried cranberries. 1/2 cup peeled, chopped apple. Ground nutmeg 3 tbsp. coconut or rice milk. Pure maple syrup. Preheat oven to 350'. Line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside. Use a sharp to cut the cap out of the top of the pumpkin. Save it. Cut
enough of the cap off so you can get your hand into the pumpkin to clean out the seeds and strings. Season the inside of the pumpkin generously with salt, pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. Place on baking sheet. In a bowl, stir the bread, sausage, walnuts, cranberries, apples, and milk. Season with a few pinches of salt, pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. Pack the mixture into the pumpkin. Put the cap in place and bake until the flesh of the pumpkin is tender and easily pierced with the tip of a knife, about 90 minutes. Remove the cap and bake until the top of the stuffing is golden, an additional 20 minutes. Serve with a maple syrup drizzle to create a delicious autumn flavor. 'Enjoy all you ghosts and goblins!!!'

Montauk Indian Museum presents FREE Archaeological Fun Day The Montauk Indian Museum Committee is thrilled to announce its first Archaeology Fest, to be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, on the grounds of the Montauk Historical Society's Second House Museum. The event is suitable for people of all ages and everyone is invited. “The Mission of our museum will be to bring to life the rich story of Montauk's natural history and prehistoric material culture,” says Dr Maria-Louise Sidoroff, the Archaeological Consultant to the Museum Committee. “We hope to raise community awareness about our Museum, which is still in the planning stages. The Fest will reflect the sorts of hands-on demonstrations and displays that will be the core of our Museum's educational programs.” The Archaeology Fest will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and it promises to entertain, inform and delight visitors with presentations on “friction fire,” “wampum making,” “blowguns,” and much more. “Every schoolchild knows that native peoples were expert hunter-gatherers,” says Sidoroff, “but as our technological world advances, it becomes more and more difficult for people to imagine what life was like in a pre-high-tech age. The Archaeology Fest will allow experts to demonstrate skills of prehistoric life that enabled early cultures to survive.” In addition to the demonstrations, there will be three brief talks by world-known archeologists and historians, covering the history of Montauk's own tribe, the Montaukett; the story of Chief Wyandanch and Lion Gardiner; and a look into prehistoric people's dependence on, and use of deer. Walter Purizaca, virtuoso of the Native American flute, will provide “music for the soul”. Delicious, family-friendly food will be available from Auntie Dorine's Mobile Clam Bar. Unique donated items from participating archeologists' personal collections will comprise an exciting raffle. The Montauk Indian Museum will be run under the auspices of the Historical Society which currently oversees two other museums: The Montauk Lighthouse, a National Historic Monument, and Second House Museum, showcasing local colonial history. The Montauk Historical Society will provide a building site for the Montauk Indian Museum on the ample grounds of Second House Museum. www.montaukindianmuseum.org The Montauk Sun • October 2012 • 13

A Day at the Spa with Sue by Sue Giustino
HOT SEA SHELL SPA MANICURE AND PEDICURE As the summer season has come to a close and fall is upon us, it’s time to hydrate our skin and clean the sand and salt out of our hands, feet and nails. Gurney’s Spa has just the remedy – the Hot Sea Shell Spa Manicure and Pedicure with Paraffin Treatment. We enjoyed a ‘his and her’ afternoon and treated our hands and feet to these refreshing treatments. The manicure began with a sea salt exfoliation followed by a Hot Sea Shell hand and arm massage that both hydrated and rejuvenated our skin. After the extensive massage, our hands were covered in lotion and warm chamomileeucalyptus paraffin, and then cocooned in a warm mitt. The next part of our experience was a pedicure which is compared to a facial- for your legs. As our hands rejuvenated in the mitts, we

sat in the massage chairs to enjoy our pedicure treatment. We first soaked in a warm, cleansing foot bath and were then treated to a cleansing Sea Salt Exfoliation. The Hot Sea Shell massage that followed was completely relaxing for our feet and legs. After being cleaned filed, they applied a Marine Algae Masque, marine organic cooling fluids lotion, warm towels and soothing lotions; all which made our feet soft, replenished, and feeling like new. The end of the pampering was upon us, so it was time to remove the hand paraffin and complete this wonderful treatment with the finishing touches which included applying new polish to my feet and hands. As we left the spa, we were feeling relaxed; our hands and feet were amazingly soft and hydrated. We’re ready to move on, yet looking forward to next summer when our feet will once again be covered with sand. Gurney’s Inn – Sea Water Spa is open all year and offers an array of enticing, therapeutic, and rejuvenating spa treatments. www.gurneysinn.com/sea-water-spa • 631-668-2345

An Apple A Day... with Chef Chris Kozlowski Fall is here and the tree fruit is dear. Apples, pears, Asian pears from the wagon on Westlake, all are truly the fruit of this wonderful summer we’ve experienced. Ask your neighbors or hit the farmstand, the fruit is there for the picking. Sometimes the fruit is not perfect, perhaps the cost of being organic. The apples are ugly, not the pie. Keep the intact fruit to snack on and cut up all the ugly fruit. One bad apple can ruin the bunch, but a bunch of bad apples can make an impressive apple pie. Good Stuff!
Ugly Apple Pie Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Scrub the apples, peel and slice. Store in water that has been acidulated, that is, had some acid added to it, lemon juice or citric acid are best. Start with at least 3 pounds of apples and use up to 4 1/2. Drain the apples well and combine with 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 Tblsp. cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Mix well and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Pour into baked pie shell and cover with another perforated crust or spread on top of the apples a streusel of:
Savory dishes utilize the noble apple. A favorite side in the month of October is braised red cabbage with apples. Serve this with your schnitzel, brats, or wurst! And cold beer.
Braised Red Cabbage and Apples 1 medium cabbage, shredded 1 red onion, sliced 2 tart apples, cored and sliced 2 Tablespoons apple juice or water 2 Tablespoons sugar, 1 if using juice 3 tablespoons vinegar, white will work, nut we use red wine vinegar Sautee onion and cabbage in a small amount of oil. Once lightly cooked, add apples and water. Cover and simmer for about a 1/2 hour. Season with salt and pepper and add sugar & vinegar to achieve your desired level of sweet & sour. Good Stuff! ––––––––––––––––––––– Chris Kozlowski is a Private Chef, Event Coordinator, and Consultant in Manhattan and the Hamptons. Happy Halloween!
4 Tablespoons butter 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts 2/3 cup sugar blend well, until crumbly, add 4 Tablespoons flour Bake at 350 for 40-55 minutes. Allow to cool completely before serving. Cooling will take hours and the bottom of the pie must be cool to the touch.

This fundraising campaign for cancer research began as a way to honor the memory of our brother Mike Diviney who passed away 25 years ago of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer. Over $40 thousand was raised, and all of the money - 100% - will go directly to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Breast Cancer Research. We would like to extend a special thanks to everyone who came out to the fundraising events, golf outing, or made direct donations. Further information and donation information, as well as pictures from the ride can be found at www.ridetoheal.org.

THE FALL SEASON by Dr. Tony Knott I had my hair cut this week by Vinnie in Amagansett. We were talking about ‘whatever’ and he says, “I just get up in the morning and put one foot in front of the other, right?” He looked at me in the mirror and the way he Dr. Tony Knott smiled after saying that, I thought to myself: “Now there’s a successful man.” And in addition, he’s one of the best barbers I’ve ever been too. There was a deck foreman for Brown and Root Lay Barge Meaders named Douglas who every morning swung his feet over the side of his bunk and said, “Lordy, Lordy, who shot Shorty.” He said that every day of his life just as his feet touched the floor. I roomed with him for a few weeks. Then he would take a big pinch of Skol, put it under his lower lip and grin. “There you go,” he would say. I’m moving my 87 year old mother out from the city this week. She’s been living there for the past 70 years…ran away from her home in East Tennessee to become an actress. Now her knees are shot and she’s having too many falls. So it’s time. I’m going through all these trunks which contain the last 70 years of my mom and dad’s lives. And I’m throwing stuff out because I have to. Even the stuff I’m keeping I don’t know where I’m going to put it or whose going to care. My boys? I just don’t know. I’ll be honest, I like the job of medicine because it’s the closest I can come to sitting on a bar stool without having to drink. I like people around me. That’s just me. I get grumpy about the little injustices we all suffer but still like opening the door and seeing some familiar face or meeting someone for the first time and asking them about their hometown. One of the most common remarks I hear from my elder patients is, “I didn’t know it was going to be like this.” They just look at me and I don’t know exactly what to say because they’ve just described the condition of life. I keep thinking of my 103 year old Navajo patient with her sheep parked outside the clinic and the only thing she wanted from the government was a tube of Ben Gay and a bottle of Tylenol every now and then. I think of Bobby Huser pulling up his lobster traps with one arm, out there on the boat by himself, stricken by the beginning of Lou Gehrig’s disease and two types of cancer. Robert Tuma sat up on the exam table and told me, “I don’t have time for this. I have a boat to run,” with reference to the lung cancer that eventually took him. These are all successful people. You’re lucky if you don’t get clobbered along the way and are physically able to put one foot in front of the other. All I can say is that we have one another in all this and that’s what’s good about it. We have companionship. So I offer a health challenge: find an elderly person and give them a hug. If you’re not elderly yourself, you will be soon and we all know what happens next. And that’s not grim, that’s just life. If you see an elder you know at the post office, walk up to them and give them, as my grandmother used to say, a big smacker on the cheek. The nice thing about Montauk is, it’s a place you can actually do that.

Imagine – Lyrics by John Lennon
LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH (Jill Jackson / Mark Miller) Let there be peace on earth And let it begin with me. Let there be peace on earth The peace that was meant to be. With God as our father Brothers all are we. Let me walk with my brother In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me Let this be the moment now. With every step i take Let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment And live each moment With peace eternally. Let ther be peace on earth, And let it begin with me.

Above: It was a perfect evening and as sad as it is that my summer season in MTK is over, I wouldn't have asked for a more beautiful sunset. You will see in the bottom right that there is a little girl playing in the sand. She was absolutely adorable and I captured her in the sunset because that was all I did this summer play in the sand! Summer 2012 out in MTK was a great one, and this picture captures it all for me.

The 4th Annual Montauk Music Festival A Montauk Sun Production
www.theMontaukMusicFestival.com
May 16th to 19th, 2013
The 4th Annual Montauk Music Festival is just around the corner…. Once again The Montauk Sun is presenting a four day Music Festial, featuring original music throughout Montauk. There will be over 200 shows in the restaurants and bars throughout the town, and on the village green in the center of town. It’s all free and unimaginably fun!! Last year we had bands from all over the tri-state area, as well as many local bands, and some from as far away as Georgia, Florida and California. They entertained us with a wide variety of genre’s and all who listened experienced the music of up and coming, energetic, friendly, and talented performers. The weather was great, the streets were full of music and lovers of music; it was a weekend of fun for families and friends from far and near. This year’s event is already shaping up to be another wonderful experience for all involved. We are actively working on acquiring sponsors, performers, and schedules which will hopefully include local school children. Some new additions for this year will include building upon last years workshops by offering additional extended music workshops for performers, as well as instrumental workshops for children. In addition, we’re thrilled to introduce the first annual “Montauk Music Festival Scholarship”. Working along with the Kiwanis Club of East Hampton, we will select a local student that has performing abilities and wants to pursue a musical college education. The scholarship will be for $1000; $500 from the Kiwanis Club and $500 from the Montauk Music Festival. So, plan to come for the weekend of May 16-19th with an opening party Thursday night at Gurney’s Inn. Bring your family and friends and enjoy the talented artists entertaining you with their music; jazz, classic rock, blues, country, and rock. For more information and continued up to date schedules go to www.montaukmusicfestival.com

SYNOPSIS: CITY DARK (rated PG 84 min.) is an entertaining and educational (“edu-tainment”) film about the disappearance of the stars under a cloud of artificial light, by the Director of KING CORN, Ian Cheney, with scenes filmed in Montauk. Blending a humorous, searching narrative with poetic footage of the night sky, CITY DARK provides a fascinating introduction to the science of the dark and an exploration of our relationship to the stars. Winner, Best Score/Music Award, 2011 SXSW Film Festival. The film follows Cheney’s journey to discover the surprising and alarming costs of light pollution and the disappearance of the night sky. Included are interviews with astronomers, naturalists, biologists and ornithologists, including the astrophysicist and Director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil DeGrasse Tyson who said, “When you look at the night sky, you realize how small we are within the cosmos. It’s the kind of a resetting of your ego. To deny yourself that state of mind, either willingly or unwitting, is to not live to the full extent of what it is to be human.” He notes the irony of being smitten with an artificial night sky at the Hayden Planetarium as a school kid, while the real sky above his own Bronx neighborhood revealed just a handful of stars. STARGAZING with telescopes that night at Montauk County Park, weather permitting. Go to: MontaukObservatory.com and join star events for free.

Dear friends, Many people asked me recently about my heathy looks and my weight loss and all what I can answer is "No, I am not on a diet, I am just eating healthy!" I found this story recently on the website www.brainsflight.com that pretty much describes my very own new healthy lifestyle, except that I didn’t have cancer, but my husband did and he passed away over 20 month ago. I want to thank my friend Phyllis Lomitola and her husband John with this piece for sharing all their incredible knowledge about healthy living and eating with me over the last couple of years and for making me a beautiful and healthy woman, again. I no longer need to take 4 medications daily and my blood work in so incredible that my life insurance company gave me the lowest rate they had for a woman of my age. The story "Brain’s Flight" you are going to read now was not just 1 mission flying across the country. Today "Brain´s Flight" lives on as a way to raise awareness and money for brain tumor and cancer research through grassroots aviation. Though "Brain" has moved on from his beloved L4 airplane, he continues on his mission in other aircraft and other vehicles. Hippocrates -- "Let food be thy medicine & let thy medicine be food" Hippocrates is considered the father of Western Medicine and lived from 460 BC to 377 BC. Some of his sage advice included, "Let food be thy medicine & let thy medicine be food." Too often as Americans we simply want to pop a pill for our high blood pressure or other ailment without giving our bodies a chance to correct the issue through proper diet and exercise. Sure, we may try to eat a little better by eating chicken and pasta instead of steak and mash potatoes, but that is through our own ignorance and what we have been taught. What we need to do is to get more serious about our health and what we eat by "Eating to Live" and help our bodies overcome many of the common ailments that afflict our population because of our dietary ignorance and lack of self discipline. We are simply overfed but undernourished. To prove this we just need to take a look the next time we are in public, we see sickly obese people everywhere in malls, airports, and Walmarts all across our nation. They get plenty of calories but not enough nutrients. This is through a lack of education (and plenty of fastfood meals) and a lack of self discipline to eat correctly. For the past 6 weeks I've taken Hippocrates' advice to heart and mainly existed on vegetables, fruits, and beans for most of my diet. I've greatly reduced the amount of meat, refined sugar, and processed foods I eat too. I also eliminated most things white (bleached flour, pasta, white rice, etc) from my diet and started juicing. I am not 100% strict and I didn't do this for political reasons or because I don't like to eat things with eyeballs. I LOVE MEAT, but I simply did this because I want to give my body the best chance to heal itself of any and all ailments. I am 90% strict and "cheat" 10% of the time with other foods to help keep my sanity and to enjoy the social aspect of some foods with my family and friends. It's not perfect, but it works for me. Here are my results.... The bad headaches I had are now gone, I've lost over 15 pounds (I now weigh what I did in my early twenties), I have more energy, my blood pressure is lower, and I feel great! My father-in-law saw me a few weeks ago and asked what I was doing because I looked so fit. I told him and he started the lifestyle change too (Which also includes exercise on most days...at least a daily walk). In 2 weeks he lost 10 pounds, Continued on Next Page

Building, restoring, and flying airplanes to raise awareness and money for brain tumor and cancer research is a natural extension of Brian’s love and fascination of aviation. It is also a great way to celebrate life, allowing him to define the disease instead of the other way around. His 2007 flight, and subsequent barnstorming and Aviation World Record activities, raised more than $72,000 for brain tumor and cancer

A Macrobiotic Lifestyle for Optimum Health... by Ken Walles “Some people think that the spirit is within the body. This is a mistake. It is the body that is within the spirit”. George Ohsawa. So Go figure....?? How is it that factually, threequarters of the world’s population is vegetarian and that most Westerners believe that to be healthy one must have dairy products and meat ? This is especially baffling when there is a great deal of scientific evidence that animal foods are responsible for more than seventy percent of deaths in Western civilization. Nobody wishes to die yet we keep eating foods that cause heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, etc... Although it may sound absurd to some, but I applaud the stance NYC Mayor Bloomberg along with many others throughout our country, especially in the school system, have taken to control food and beverage intake. This is the most effective way to combat the obesity problem in America today, along with the many other diseases that accompany the poor quality of food we ingest. In your quest for optimum health, you hear many conflicting thoughts on various natural foods that do mostly good for us. As you may be aware, Brown rice is a major component in a “Macrobiotic Diet (or Lifestyle)”. With the latest news released on rice in general and the Arsenic levels, here is my take on Brown Rice. Since Macrobiotics has been practiced in the U.S. now for over 50 years, there are many examples of thriving families in the thousands that live extremely healthy lives where brown rice has been consumed on a daily basis. One such location where evidence can be substantiated is at the “Strengthening Health Institute” in Philadelphia where there is a thriving Macrobiotic program. So, it is possible that the phytic acid in whole, unrefined grains provide protection against heavy metal pollutants, including arsenic. Research has shown that the phytic acid in the bran of grains can incapsulate heavy metals, render them inert, and eliminate them from our bodies. Some people have charged that phytic acid may also interfere with the absorption of essential minerals including iron, calcium and zinc. This case is in doubt since many practicing macrobiotics have recovered from anemia and also remineralized their bones while eating whole grains with every meal. In most cases their doctors tell them that their blood tests are the healthiest ever seen. Arsenic is a residual poison and the effects accumulate over time. If the levels of arsenic in organic brown rice are harmful then how do you account for the benefits that so many people have realized over the years through eating this grain on a daily basis. It seems that the benefits of eating brown rice greatly outweigh the potential risks. {Brown rice should be soaked overnight and rinsed before cooking}. Unfortunately there are many things we hear both good and bad. Do your own research, for your common sense with guide you. Most misinformation or non-information uncovered usually has a profit value attached to it. You may find yourself asking why the government allows the many products we use on a daily basis leading to the overwhelming diseases we see in our society today and why it is permitted. Where are our FDA watchdogs ?? Here are a few awareness points for there are many. ie: soft drinks that contain 160 - 180 calories per can that no one can afford in their diet even once daily. And if its not the sugar that puts folks at risk, its the bisphenol A or BPA, a chemical used to coat the aluminum cans to prevent them from rusting. BPA has been implicated in other studies in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders, and obesity in adults. And found not just in cans.... its also in the plastic bottles used widely for many products. Choose glass containers whenever possible. And Monsanto has been in the news almost daily with a rise in the outrage from the public on their “GMO’s” (Genetically Modified Organisms). Especially GMO corn treated with the pesticide Roundup which has been found to cause tumors in rats. A new study found that rats fed for two years with Monsanto’s GMO corn variety NK603 or dosed with Roundup at levels permitted in drinking water, food and feed, died earlier than rats fed a diet of no GMO’s. The Russian Government has already announced that they have suspended all imports of Monsanto’s genetically engineered corn due to these studies. And what of the concern to us here locally ? The blooms and dead zones in our coastal waters from the run-off of the massive amounts of nitrogen fertilizer that threatens the health of our seas and life within. Much progress has been made in our communities to combat and reverse our destructive trends through awareness and education. We all must be more diligent to continue this trend of correction. And as we round the final quarter of 2012 it is time to regroup, cleanse and detoxify from the bounty of the summer’s Continued on Page 35

party’s and multitude of over consumption, since now our personal health over takes the quest for a pre-summer skimpy bathing suit. And should 2013 have anything to offer from the vast menu of possibilities, one of the best choices might be to make a commitment to reawaken the truth inside by making a concerted effort to reconnect with the natural world. Eating clean, local food is a good starting point. Its the first note in the grand symphony that affirms that everything is connected and we’re all in this together. There is no teacher that is wiser than Nature, no lesson plan better suited to bring light to the dark corners of human consciousness than one that reveals the inescapable truth of our interdependency with all life on this planet. In closing, A simple “Creamy Beet Soup recipe: Hot or cold, beets are high in folate, which repairs cells and can decrease risk of some illnesses.

Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity By Joel Stein Review by Stefan Lonce Time Magazine humor columnist Joel Stein has written a funny…and thoughtful… book entitled Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity, about his Personal Quest (PQ) to confront his “pure panic” about being a father to his son, Laszlo, since first seeing the “blur of his penis” on the ultrasound. A self-proclaimed wimp, Stein, “…owned no Matchbox cars, no dirt bikes…never climbed a tree, built a fort or broke a bone…[but] had an EasyBake oven, a glass animal collection…[and] a stack of LP’s of nothing but show tunes…” when he was a boy, so he knew nothing about being a role model to a young son, who was already showing the frightening signs of loving cars and other “manly” things. “I pictured having to go camping and fix a car and use a hammer and throw a football and watch professionals throw footballs and figure out whether to be sad or happy about the results of said football throwing,” Stein wrote. That’s why Stein decided to embark on his Man Made PQ -- to become a good male role model for Laszlo. Among the hilarious hijinks that Stein wrote about were spending a 24-hour shift with firefighters in Los Angeles (where Stein lives with his wife Cassandra, and Laszlo), turkey hunting, rebuilding his in-laws’ house, driving a Lamborghini, three days of US Army boot camp, and going mano-amano with Ultimate Fighting Champion Randy Couture. Of course, if you read Stein’s “Awesome” humor column in Time, you would know that these tasks end with laugh-out-loud results. But Man Made is also a heartwarming story about the love between fathers and sons. As with A.J. Jacobs, whose PQ books (The Year of Living Biblically, The Guinea Pig Diaries, and DropDead Healthy) I have glowingly reviewed in the pages of this illustrious – and awesome! – newspaper, Joel Stein makes you laugh… and makes you think. Just as A.J. inspired to me to reposition my forthcoming book about vanity license plates as a memoir entitled, L C N S 2 R O M - L I C E N S E T O R O A M : M Y P E R S O N A L Q U 3 S T 2 V A N I T I Z E T H E U S A A N D C A N A D A 2 !, so too does Joel Stein inspire me. In fact, I included A.J. Jacobs and Joel Stein as clues in the VANITY LICENSE PLATES GAME in my 2012 Jewish New Year’s card; Joel sent me an email thanking me for “vanitizing” him. Now if I could only persuade Joel to vanitize his MINI – or if he has already vanitized his car - I could write about him in LCNS2ROM (A.J., who lives in Manhattan, is carless).
I was mostly surprised how nice they are. And, at least on the West Coast, how clean, disciplined, military, humble and generally un-Rescue Me they all are. I hear that's different in New York. What is the most unexpected lesson you learned from your Man Made PQ? That doing man stuff does make you manlier: More confident and more self-reliant. Knowing how to fight changes how you act in every situation. Are you vanitized? If so, what does your vanity plate say? I f not, would you vanitize? 2LASZLO is available in California; so is TIMEGUY. It's weird: I love seeing vanitized plates. I love figuring them out, love looking at the people who have them - totally amuses me. But I'd feel like a douche for having one. I think everything I do in my physical life is just trying to blend in. If all my friends had them, I'd sure I'd get one. But they don't, so I wouldn't even think of it. www.thejoelstein.com • http://twitter.com/thejoelstein
Here is the Q+A from my email interview with Joel Stein: You started your quest with a list of tasks. Which of your tasks would you like to do again and why? I keep thinking about taking this MMA class down the street. I need to get in shape. And become more aggressive. And knowing some self-defense isn't a bad thing. Also, I should fix more stuff around my house. It's not that bad and impresses my wife. Sexually.
B&B Auto Service of Montauk
Which would you never do again…and why? Hunting. Not because I care about animals, but because I don't care about them. Sitting quietly in the woods and listening to animals and trying to figure out how they think to outsmart them is really, really boring. Plus you seem to have to wake up early for this. You have to wake up early for lots of man stuff. Which is confusing, since men go to strip clubs. I don't think sleeping is manly.
24 Hour Flatbed Towing
I found your shift with the LA firefighters to be fascinating. What was the biggest surprise you found working with them? So many. First: How much time they spend in L.A. shuffling the schizophrenic and poor to the emergency room, when those people don't have emergencies - and they have to stay with them until a doctor is willing to see them, which takes hours. I was surprised how eager - desperate, even - they are for a fire. The reason seven fire trucks go racing down the street to a fire is that they all want to get their first and they're bummed when a different truck gets their before them and gets to go in while they work the hoses outside.

Famous Healer OHASHI at Gurney’s by Debbie Tuma When you look at someone’s face, it can tell you more than you realize. That was the message behind a fascinating 3-hour workshop with worldrenowned Oriental healer ‘Ohashi’ at Gurney’s Inn Resort & Spa recently. This special evening was presented by “Personal Cure of Montauk,” a holistic healing group formed to study and promote good health and nutrition. Ken Walles, owner of the Oceanside Beach Resort in Montauk, and Phyllis Lomitola, of Gurney’s Inn, are the heads of this group. Ohashi, who was born in Hiroshima, Japan during the second world war, traveled to Montauk from his home in upstate New York. A pioneer of Oriental medicine, Shiatsu, Macrobiotic and Oriental Diagnosis, he has been teaching holistic health and his famous methods for over 40 years. At his “Ohashi Institute,” he has trained thousands of people, and his clients include Ralph Lauren, Henry Kissenger, Halston, and Martha Graham. Ohashi, who has published several books on health, is an expert in the ancient art of “face-reading,” to tell his clients what is going on inside their bodies and minds by focusing on their faces. About 30 people attended his talk, where he drew diagrams of people’s faces to show how he reads them. “The human face is unique—everyone has a different face, whereas with animals, their faces are more unified,” he explained. The Chinese developed the art of face-reading, for diagnosing certain diseases and problems. Ohashi, who looks much younger than his 68 years, divided the face into three zones, showing the youth, middle age and mature age. He said someone with a big forehead is more inclined to be intellectual.
The lower face area shows a strong vitality and will power, if it is pronounced, with a strong jawline. “Your entire body is on the face,” he said. “The face is the entrance to all organs.” There are 57 small muscles in the face, and altogether, 360 muscles in the body. Ohashi noted that he can also read the wrinkles in one’s face—which tell him a lot. Wrinkles on the forehead tell how you lived your life in your 20’s, while long wrinkles mean you are dependable and consistent. Kissenger had long, consistent wrinkles on his face. Ohashi explained that the human eyes can tell him how much oxygen there is in the body. During sleep, we recover oxygen. If we’re not getting enough green vegetables and fruit, our eyes get heavy. Overconsumption of alcohol, refined sugar and salt cause the eyes to “go up.” He said the lips can show the health of the appetite, assimilation and digestion processes. Dark circles under the eyes show people who live against nature—they don’t eat seasonal fruits and vegetables. He suggested that people eat seasonal foods grown within 10 miles, for the best health. “Your face is a guide to a healthier, happier future,” he said. Ohashi said that the biological age shows up in a person’s back—how they carry themselves is important, and can make them look younger or older. He invented many techniques for stretching the neck and back muscles, such as the “Healing Scarf Therapy,” where he stretches your neck comfortably with a simple scarf. Through his hands-on therapy, he also helps cure lower back pain. In between two stimulating sessions on health, Ohashi and his audience were treated to a wonderful macrobiotic meal prepared by Gurney’s Sous Chef Michael Oransky. He studied at the Kushi Institute to learn macrobiotic cooking, and he has been adding some vegan and gluten-free meals at Gurney’s ever since. For dinner, Oransky prepared a delicious “Kinpira,” of sauteed carrots, dikon and hijiki seaweed, plus some steamed kale, brown rice and barley, black beans, the best Miso soup, and some barley tea. What a healthy way to end a fun, educational evening overlooking the Montauk ocean. The following day, Ohashi did private healing sessions with several of the guests from his lecture, at the Oceanside Beach Resort. For more information on Personal Cure, contact Ken Walles at 516-527-8593, and on Ohashi, visit www.ohashi.com

Ann Roth... Costume Designer by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel Besides the story and music, costume design has to be one of the most impactful areas in the movie making industry. Period pieces are particularly intriguing because of the research and detail that goes into replicating fashions from long ago to complement the story being told on screen. Through the magic of fashion designers, modern day movie-goers are drawn into the film and taken along a journey to the time frame of the film. Ann Roth is one of these talented designers and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Hamptons International Film Festival will honor Academy Award®-winning Costume Designer Ann Roth as part of the festival’s 20th anniversary. Ms Roth will receive The HIFF’s Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Costume Design. Special guests to the event will include Nathan Lane and Mike Nichols and it will be hosted by CNN’s Alina Cho The celebration will take place at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Saturday, October 6th where Ms. Roth will receive her award. With six decades in the film industry and over 100 film credits to her name, legendary costume designer Ann Roth has earned numerous accolades for her diverse career, including an Oscar® for “The English Patient” (1996). Well-known for the depth of her creative vision and her rigorous attention to detail, Roth has designed costumes for a wide variety of genres and historical periods, with films as varied as “The Day of the Locust” (1975), “Hair” (1979), “The World According to Garp” (1982), “The Birdcage” (1996), “The Hours” (2002) and “Julie & Julia” (2009). Roth is noted for her ability to collaborate with actors and directors in creating indelible
characters, and has worked repeatedly with such artists as Mike Nichols, Stephen Daldry, Anthony Minghella, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Day-Lewis. In addition to her four Academy Award nominations, Roth has received four Tony Award® nominations for her costume designs for the stage (most recently, for her work on The Book of Mormon) and three Emmy Award® nominations (including her work on the miniseries “Mildred Pierce”). This special event will be both a celebration of Roth’s career and an examination of her work and craft, featuring film clips and in-depth discussions of her creative process. “Ann’s work has contributed to the creation of some of the most enduring and memorable characters that have graced the screen and stage,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “She has our highest respect. Ann is beloved.” “We are honored that in our festival’s anniversary year we are able to recognize and salute such an extraordinary woman as Ann Roth,” said Executive Director Karen Arikian. “She epitomizes the inspirational creative talent that we have endeavored to present to our audiences at HIFF for the last 20 years.” "It is, of course, a tremendous honor to be recognized for one's work by one's peers" said Ann Roth. "I gratefully thank both The Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences and HIFF and I commend the festival on its steely optimism in waiting until 2012 to bestow such an honor on me". In celebration of Ms. Roth’s career, a selection of her original sketches and renderings will be exhibited during the week of the festival. The exhibition will feature hand-drawn works created and curated by Ms. Roth. The Hamptons International Film Festival greatly appreciates the support from their corporate sponsors including, American Airlines, Altour, Silvercup Studios, Baume & Mercier, Nicolas Feuillatte, Capital One, A&E and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP. The Art of Love...with Lucia Questions & Answers!
Dear Lucia, I’ve been dating a married but separated man for over 6 months. When we first met he was separated from his wife of 8 years for 2 months. We really connected and enjoy dating each other. I’m taking it slow due to the circumstances. He has made no effort to file for divorce or even move his wife’s things out. She does not know of me and she wants to work things out with him - he does not. I know he cares a lot for me but I don’t want to be a rebound. Should I end it? ~ Anonymous
Hi Lucia, I met a guy on Facebook in April. After I gave him my number he was texting me every day, but he would never call me. When we decided to meet, he called me twice that Dear Anonymous, day. We went out for dinner and he was looking at me, touching my hand, shoulder, smiling and What is it with women who date married men? Aren’t there enough single men to we had a great conversation. It has been over a month since I heard from him. Now I miss him. I want to text him and tell him that, Cheryl Bennett is a 31-year-old local woman, born at the Southampton Hospital and raised in East but I don't want to get hurt. Was he just playing games with me or does he think who just turned 1-year-old in August. Like most people, Cheryl, (lovingly called “Cher” by her friends that I was not interested in him? (because I never told him and family,) attended her local East Hampton Public Schools and has worked at local establishments that I was falling for him). I am going crazy thinking through the years. She’s a youthful, active mother, who takes pride in raising her girls to be the best about this over and over. What went wrong that last women they can be. Today, Cheryl finds herself facing something that no 31-year-old woman should night? ~ Anna
Care for Cher
Hi Anna, I know it can be very frustrating when a guy “seems” to be into you, yet things don’t add up. The fact is that a man who’s really interested in you is going to pick up the phone and call because he wants to hear your voice. When you get back from a month long trip, he’s going to want to see you as much as possible. When you ignore his texts he will call to find out what happened. Yet he did none of this. When you stopped texting, he eventually did the same. I don’t know if anything went wrong that night that may have changed things, but it doesn’t matter. The bottom line is that he’s not acting like a man who is in love or falling in love. I predict that he will eventually contact you again – yes, via text. At that point, if you are still interested, you need to let him know that you are looking for love and this didn’t feel like love, so you preferred to walk away. After that, the ball is in his court. He either steps it up or you’re out. Never stay with someone who isn’t as crazy about you as you are about them. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

face. Cheryl is bravely fighting a personal battle with breast cancer. We, Cheryl’s friends and family, are calling on her community to help her through this difficult time.
In late March of this year, when Cheryl’s infant daughter Sophia was nearly 8-months-old, Cheryl found a mass in her right breast during her regular self-examination. Cheryl’s OB-Gyn ordered an ultrasound and based on the reading, immediately ordered a subsequent biopsy. On June 1st, Cheryl received a phone call from the Southampton Hospital Breast Center which told her that she had breast cancer. That singular call set in to motion a battery of tests and a series of life-changing events. At the end of the testing, the exact diagnosis was Stage IIA-3, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a type of cancer which feeds off estrogen and was aggravated by the recent pregnancy. Additionally, Cheryl’s cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. On July 3rd, Cheryl endured a grueling 7-hour double mastectomy and partial reconstruction. The modified surgery removed all breast tissue and included the removal of a web of some 30 lymph nodes from and around Cheryl’s right arm and breast. In early August, Cheryl made the decision to cut off her long hair and donate it to a cancer-related organization. On August 13th, Cheryl started chemotherapy treatments, which will continue for the next 2-3 months. Post chemotherapy, the following year holds further reconstruction surgery, possible radiation treatment, (which hasn’t been ruled out yet,) various prescription medications and hormone therapy to stop Cheryl’s body from producing estrogen. In our effort to help reduce the growing financial burden placed on Cheryl and her loving boyfriend, Michael Mazzaraco in their time of need, a musical event and fundraiser has been organized to be held on Friday, October 12th, at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, NY. Various musical guests will perform, including The Nancy Atlas Project, Winston Irie and Booga Sugar. There will be a silent auction and a raffle drawing for donated items of value. At this time, we are respectfully requesting contributions of any items, gift certificates or services, which can be used to raffle and auction off at days and times related to the event.

Richard Gere to be Honored at HIFF by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
Westchester Broadway Theater Line-up by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel Scores of guests and summer residents to the East End live in Westchester and enjoy the best of both worlds at either location. On the East End there is nature all around, beautiful beaches, the majestic Atlantic Ocean and outdoor activities galore. Back home in Westchester there is the Westchester Broadway Theatre (WBT) waiting with a new stage production to entertain, thrill and provide theatre goers with a fantastic experience! Located in Elmsford, New York, the WBT is just finishing up its run of Cole Porter’s Can-Can. We had the pleasure of attending the dinner theatre for this production and it was a delight with its high energy and physically demanding musical hall dances ala the Folies Bergere in Paris. First danced in 1822 it is hard to believe that the can-can was outlawed because of its suggestive nature when the dancers lifted their many layers of ruffle skirts to show their bloomers that went below the knee. My how times have changed! The dazzling musical features such Porter classics as "I Love Paris," "It's All Right With Me," and "C'est Magnifique". It is a fantastic night out at the WBT and the best part is that no trips to the city are necessary and parking is complimentary. Can-Can runs through October 7 before the next production begins. Looking ahead to the rest of the autumn season into winter, the WBT lineup continues to include classic hits that visitors attend in record numbers. Look for Fiddler on the Roof to begin on October 11 and run through November 25, 2012. There is a break in-between its restart so the WBT can offer its Holiday Program, Miracle on 34th Street from November 29 through December 30, 2012. This is a holiday classic that all family members can enjoy together and celebrate the season! Fiddler will restart January 3, 2013 and continue until February 10, 2012. Ticket Prices: Dinner & Show range between $52.00 and $80.00 PLUS TAX depending on the performance chosen. Beverage Service & Gratuities are not included in the ticket price. Discounts are available for children, students, and senior citizens at selected performances. Also check the website for on-going Special Offers! Reservations: Call (914)592-2222. Also at: www.BroadwayTheatre.com. Group Reservations: Discounts for Groups of 20 or More: Call 592-2225. Luxury Boxes: Call 592-8730. For private parties of 6 to 22. If you have never experienced the Hampton International Film Festival (HIFF), this is the year you must do it! Now celebrating its 20th year the lineup of events planned for the five day Festival is spectacular. HIFF was founded in 1993 to celebrate independent film- long, short, fiction and documentary - and to introduce a unique, varied spectrum of international films and filmmakers to the public. The Festival is committed to exhibiting films that express fresh voices and differing global perspectives, with the hope that these programs will enlighten audiences, provide invaluable exposure for filmmakers and present inspired entertainment for all. Taking place among the charming seaside historic villages on the East End, HIFF's intimate, informal atmosphere makes the festival an ideal destination for cinephiles. The 20th anniversary edition takes place over Columbus Day weekend, October 4th-8th, 2012. This year, legendary actor, Richard Gere will receive the Festival’s prestigious Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Acting. As any film buff knows Mr. Gere has starred in some of the finest films the industry has offered. On top of the box office hit list is An Officer and a Gentlemen, American Gigolo and Pretty Woman. The award ceremony will take place on October 6th at 7:00 pm at Guild Hall during the Festival’s “Conversation With Richard Gere”, a discussion with Mr. Gere about his life and career, moderated by the Festival’s Honorary Chairman, Alec Baldwin. The event will feature a montage highlighting Mr. Gere’s screen appearances. “Conversation With Richard Gere” is sponsored by Capital One. In addition to his work on the screen, Mr. Gere is an accomplished musician, photographer and humanitarian, advocating for human rights with organizations that include The International Campaign for Tibet, Survival International and Healing the Divide. He also created The Gere Foundation, which supports the cultural preservation of Tibet and the Tibetan people. “Richard Gere’s outstanding body of work speaks for itself. Richard’s phenomenal talent and social activism has showcased his passion and heart. We are thrilled to present him with the Golden Starfish Award,” said Karen Arikian, Executive Director of the Hamptons International Film Festival. Past honorees of the Golden Starfish Award are Gena Rowlands, Vanessa Redgrave, Joan Allen and Alec Baldwin.
