military mom by Brandi Jones
Giving Back, Remembrance, and Holiday Events GIVING TUESDAY As December brings many people together in a joyous way, I’d like to share some festive events happening around the area. December 3 is Giving Tuesday, a movement designed for families, businesses, and the community to celebrate generosity and to give back. You can support the military this Giving Tuesday by donating to the American Legion, an organization that provides service to veterans, service members, and the military community through programs such as scholarships, veteran assistance, veteran homelessness, youth sports, and much more. Get involved by logging onto https://www.members.legion.org/tal/ donatenow. You can also directly donate to VFW Post 512 in Carmel. VFW Post 512 reaches out into the community, accepting aluminum can tab tops in supporting of the Ronald MacDonald House. VFW Post 512, along with the Monterey Peninsula Veterans Organization and surrounding area VFW’s, collect these tiny aluminum can tab tops and turn them in for money that they then donate to help cover costs to families with children undergoing medical treatment. VFW Post 512 Manager Paul Rodriguez shared with me
that he personally hand delivers these donations. If you would like to help, bring your aluminum can tab tops to Post 512 in Carmel. If you live in the Marina area, you can drop your tab tops off at The Otter’s Den. In Salinas, deliver to American Legion Post 31 at 14 W. Laurel Avenue. PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed December 7, 1941, as “a date which will live in infamy.” After global conflict and the bombing of Pearl Harbor lead to the United States officially entering World War II. This December 7, as we remember that day and reflect on the lives lost, let us join in honor of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, with a hike to the top of Pinnacles National Park — presented by MWR Community Recreation. For more information, email commrec@ nps.edu. WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY In that same spirit of remembrance, we observe National Wreaths Across America Day on December 14. National Wreaths Across America Day is an event in December dedicated to remembering the sacrifices veterans have made in wars since the American
Revolution. Wreaths Across America (WAA) Day pays tribute in veterans cemeteries nationwide. On their website, The WAA states it’s mission includes “raising awareness of the sacrifices veterans to make for the country and encouraging more people to remember.” The WAA official site also offers an online form where you can select options, including a wreath-laying, sponsoring a wreath, or coordinating with a local cemetery. My family and I participated in this program in 2015 at Arlington National Cemetery; it was a day we will never forget. We said the name of each veteran before placing the wreath on the headstone to ensure that their legacy of duty, service, and sacrifice was not forgotten. For more information on how you can donate, visit www. wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Father’s day by Rob Weisskirch
Give ‘em another hug!
Why it’s so important to show your children affection
T
he other day, at school drop off, I saw a father holding a toddler while his first-grade son huffed off to line up for school. The father, wrestling the squirming toddler, still called his son back, and insisted the son say good-bye with a kiss and hug from dad. The son complied with a dramatic air, but a smile emerged across his face. The power of physical affection is strong for children. Research is clear that skin-to-skin contact has positive effects on infants and especially for preemies. With the contact, the heart rate becomes more steady, body temperature regulates, and stress reactions are reduced. This kind of contact can come from Dad and Mom. Many parents have no resistance to touching, hugging, kissing, blowing raspberries, bouncing, and other forms of contact with infants. However, it seems that as children move out of babyhood, fathers become less and less demonstrative of affection. Dads, we need to change this! Physical affection helps to reinforce those feelings of connection, trust, and support in children that fathers often neglect to show. According to research, men are more likely to do something supportive than saying or physically communicating affection. Affection results in positive outcomes for children. Child Trends, a leading research institute, has reported that kids
who receive warmth and affection also report higher self-esteem, better academic performance, greater parentchild communication, and fewer psychological and behavior problems. Fathers, don’t hold back. As kids grow up, it is easy for us dads to let kids avoid the hugs and kisses and other affectionate gestures. I think this plays into our views of masculinity, and research supports the idea that fathers tend to express the amount of affection with their children that they report having received from their fathers. If this still holds, today’s dads have to work harder to buck that trend. At the same time, physical affection from dad helps to model healthy masculinity for children. Daughters see that being masculine includes being trustworthy, reliable, supporting family, and expressing feelings. Sons learn that showing affection is all part of being a healthy man. Some dads may have trouble feeling comfortable with expressing affection. For dads who have a hard time saying, “I love you,” the National Center on Fathering advises to go into the child’s room at night when the kid is sleeping, and practice saying it. With more regular practice, it will come out naturally during the day. Notes containing expressions of love can be slipped into lunches and backpacks or written on foggy bathroom mirrors (and later text messages). Fathers can
also not allow kids to avoid physical affection being offered because they are embarrassed or uncomfortable at the attention. An easy way to address this embarrassment is to say, “That is how we interact in our family,” or something similar. This sentiment allows the kid to explain then that the “embarrassing” behavior is a family thing but also reinforces what the actual standards for behavior are in the family. I read a parenting book once where the author advocated for holding your child’s hand unexpectedly and saying, “I just like holding your hand.” The idea is that because parents spend so much time directing a child’s behavior that there may be much less time simply providing reassurance. As a dad, I do spend less overall time with my daughter than my wife does, and that time is often filled with directions and requests to do something. By just taking my daughter’s hand casually, I think I can remind her that I support her, care for her, and love her unconditionally.

New Year’s Resolution Find out how your children are doing in school.

Parents: Obviously, the more you know about what your children are doing in school, the easier it will be for you to help them to do their best. In addition, you will be able to praise them for their very real accomplishments, which makes for a win-win situation. Look over the following list of New Year’s Resolutions and find a few that would help you to have a good picture of how your children are doing in school:

Chat daily with your children about school. This will give you an idea about how school is going for your child. Reluctance to talk about school might be an indication of problems. Look over younger children’s work each day. It is best to do this with your children. If their papers are bleeding with red marks almost every day, it is time for a chat with their teacher. Ask your older children to show you their schoolwork and note the grades and any comments made by the teacher. Use the school/teacher’s web pag-
•
es to find out exactly what is being studied. In some schools, teachers put online homework assignments, class participation points and quiz and test scores online. Get teachers’ email addresses as this is a great way to communicate with them. Go to all parent-teacher conferences that are scheduled during the year and listen carefully to what a teacher says about how the children are doing. Read your children’s report cards carefully. Look at attendance and conduct. Talk with a teacher or school counselor for other kinds of information about your child’s performance, such as test scores and teacher observations. Remember that when you get to know the teachers in informal situations, you can do nothing but improve your relationship with them when you are dealing with situations affecting your children Attending events at your children’s school gives you the opportunity to meet other parents. This can help you gain more information about the school and your children’s teachers and classes.
Using Technology to Build Vocabulary QUESTION: My child, a sixth grader, loves technology. She also has a weak vocabulary. Are there any ways to combine building vocabulary and technology? –Multitasker
MONTEREY BAY PARENT • december 2019
ANSWER: It is very important for children to have a good vocabulary. Academic success depends on the ability to understand what is read. Having a good vocabulary is one of the keys to comprehending material, especially new material. Most children have a sufficient everyday vocabulary to communicate easily with others. However, the language of textbooks and classroom work is a far more difficult vocabulary to acquire, as it involves language not ordinarily used in daily conversation. Fortunately, there are ways to expand your daughter’s vocabulary that involve technology. You might start with having her explore word games. This way she could be having fun and at the same time expanding her vocabulary. Your daughter might search with you online for vocabulary games. Make sure appropriate websites are chosen. One site that you might consider looking at is vocabulary.com. It has a fun quiz that older elementary students can use to improve their vocabulary online. The quiz gives four potential meanings for a vocabulary word, and students select the one they think fits. It’s ideal for elementa-
ry students because it provides a hint for students who have no idea what a word is. Another great tool that will help your child immediately look up a word she does not recognize in her reading is online reference tools. She will be more likely to use this type of tool rather than a print dictionary. Many of these tools are free. Explore several with your daughter. Some can be mounted on the browser tool bar for ease of usage. Because students who have the best vocabularies are those who have acquired it through reading widely, encourage your daughter to read books that appeal to her online. Many ebooks have dictionary help that offers not only the definition of a word but also its pronunciation. Your child should also begin to use the vocabulary help that is offered on many websites. For example, there is a word wizard that pops up when students are reading Scholastic News online. It is also possible for her to hear the articles being read. Finally, for your child to increase her vocabulary, encourage her to listen to audio narration of books, especially those that will let her have access to

dictionary definitions of words that she might not know. And it would be wise to ask her teachers about websites that the child can use to increase her vocabulary. They are likely to have some excellent suggestions.
One Way to Improve Messy Handwriting QUESTION: My son does well in second grade. However, his handwriting is still very messy. He can’t seem to stay on the lines – writing either above or below them with many words. How can we help him write neater? –Messy Writing ANSWER: Actually, there is a relatively simple trick that could help him. You could have him use paper with raised or bold lines. Just search for it online, and you will find many choices. Or you can make your own lined paper with glue or bold colored lines that will indicate where he should be writing.
Parents should send questions and comments to dearteacher@dearteacher.com.

Holiday Traditions to Treasure
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Eid al-Fitr, Bodhi Day, or the winter solstice, holiday traditions are a fun way for families to bond and create fond memories. The traditions you choose are limited only by your imagination in the way you and your family carry them out. The following are a few fun traditions to consider. Customs For Gatherings

something important such as your baby’s first Christmas or solstice. If it’s your first season in a new home, find an ornament that represents it. Homemade wrapping paper. Get a roll of brown Kraft paper. Then cut holiday shapes out of sponges, dip them in holiday-colored paint, and stamp the shapes onto the paper. Use glitter and glue to add to the festive look.
Storytelling. Choose a theme such as ‘my most memorable holiday season’ or ‘the best thing that happened this year,’ and ask each person to share a memory. Record the storytelling on video or audio, then play it in future years as part of your memory sharing tradition. Poetry. Hold a holiday poetry reading. Ask each person to bring copies of their favorite seasonal or holiday poems to pass out and read aloud at your gathering. White elephant. Rather than exchanging gifts or doing a drawing for a gift exchange, hold a ‘white elephant.’ Each guest brings a wrapped gift that anyone can use. Everyone then draws a numbered slip and takes a turn choosing either a wrapped gift or taking an unwrapped gift from another participant. If a player loses their gift, that person gets to choose another wrapped gift or take a gift from some-

each. Beginning December 1st, remove a lollipop each day through Christmas Eve, or the eve of the holiday you celebrate. Romantic evening. Couples often forget to take time out for each other during the busy holiday season. Plan an evening for two and reserve a table near a fireplace or a different romantic setting. When you return home, light some candles and your tree, listen to holiday or soft music and exchange a special gift with each other. Then spend the evening reminiscing and sharing your dreams for the future. Cut your own tree. Take the whole family to a tree farm and make a day of it. Look for the perfect tree to compliment your home, or that fits your family’s taste. International customs. Pick up a book on holiday customs around the world. Each year, choose a different culture or nationality for your theme. Then decorate and try new traditions accordingly. Shopping date. Make a date with your partner, and assist each other in selecting your holiday attire. Decide in ad-
vance on the formality so you choose complementary outfits and your shopping trip together remains agreeable.
TRADITION TIPS •
Discontinue holiday traditions that have lost their appeal and usefulness or that create too much stress. Talk to your family members or friends who share in the tradition, explain your feelings, and ask for input. Even if they don’t feel the same, you can try to reach a compromise that satisfies everyone.
•
Don’t overdo it. Be selective and choose the customs that mean the most to you and your family. Most traditions require some investment of time, energy, or money. Taking on too many can cause stress and lead traditions to lose their appeal.
•
When you choose traditions, divide the responsibilities. Women often take sole responsibility for holiday activities, which can be overwhelming and interfere with their ability to really enjoy the season. Try not to strive for perfection and get men and children involved.
Just For You
Pamper yourself. Decorate the bathroom in holiday candles, fragrance, and holly. Throw on some holiday or other relaxing music. Then enjoy a long bubble bath and give yourself a full salon treatment. Include a manicure, pedicure, deep hair conditioning, facial mask, and body buff.
