from the publisher… Here’s to 2018! I love January! All of the holiday busyness is over and there’s nothing very big on the horizon for a few months. It’s such a sweet time for quiet afternoons reading, long walks, closet cleaning, and daydreaming. But the best part is that a new year stretches out with all sorts of promise. Who knows what amazing things are in store? One thing that I know is in store for 2018 is our first Family Fun Expo. We’re so excited to be planning the event for April 28 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. You can check out the details on the inside cover. But for now, know that we are booking vendors so if it’s something your business or organization might be interested in, give us a call at 831-582-1373 for all the details. We promise that it will be a fun-filled day for local families and a great opportunity for businesses to reach parents with information about all sorts of goods and services! For those of you with toddlers, you’re going to love this issue. We gathered all the pertinent information about Monterey County preschools to help you make your choice for the 2018-19 school year. In addition, we asked our writers to focus on preschoolers and they came back with some really helpful articles including Bayley Freeman’s tips on choosing a preschool on page 8. here are few things as impactful to a child’s future as their education. As a parent, I take this responsibility very seriously. As a former teacher, I know what I would like my children’s school experience to be. But as a military parent, I have no clue where we will live when my kids become students. In Monterey, military families have access to two Child Development Centers in the La Mesa and Fort Ord housing communities. Both locations are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and offer half day and full day preschool care. Not ready for preschool? Start with hourly care or halfdays to make your child’s transition to the school environment fun and positive. They will have the chance to socialize and learn with their peers, making the eventual transition to preschool and kindergarten less intimidating. Contact the La Mesa CDC at (831) 656-2734 or the Monterey Road CDC at Fort Ord at (831) 583-1050 to schedule a tour and get more information. If you are facing a Permanent Change of Station, or PCS, making the transition to a new school can be daunting. Start by contacting the School Liaison Officer, Fleet and Family Support Center, and command Family Readiness Leader or Ombudsman. They will be able to help provide information about what options you have and how to enroll. Military parent groups on social media are a growing resource as well. This is also a great time to start an education binder for your child. You can include report cards, work samples, copies of official paperwork such as Individualized Education Programs, shot records, and teacher notes. Keep in mind that requirements vary by state–your School Liaison Officer will help you navigate. The most important thing you can do for your military child’s education is to remain positive and supportive. Realize that kids, like all of us, feel stress as well as excitement when facing a new situation. This is true for everything from starting preschool to moving as part of a PCS. But know that your military child is resilient, adaptable, and already benefitting from the unique opportunities being part of a military family provides. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKDcontrolled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze. How To Choose A

hoosing a preschool is an important and sometimes difficult decision. The Monterey area offers a wide selection of preschools, and you should shop around before settling on one. Here are some things to think about as you prepare to pick a place for your young child to learn and grow. LOCATION AND COST Arguably the most important factors are location and cost. How far is the preschool from your house, and, if you have any other school-aged children, how far is it from their school(s)? Think about

drop-off and pick-up times: will they be too close to each other, causing you to rush around or be late? (Rushing a preschooler can be a futile endeavor.) As for cost, it is essential to do your research. In the Monterey area, preschools can range wildly in price, with a difference of hundreds of dollars between schools. Remember that a more expensive preschool does not necessarily mean a better preschool! (Personal note: my daughter attended a preschool three mornings a week that cost us $500/month, and she did not thrive there. We switched her to a preschool that costs $190/month for

three mornings, and she loves it.) THE FINE PRINT Next, consider the nitty-gritty details: Does your child need to be potty-trained to attend? If not, ask if the teachers will work on potty training during school. Next, find out if your child will eat lunch at the preschool. Don’t sign up for a preschool that requires a packed lunch if packing a lunch every school day stresses you. Also, think about how your child does in a group meal setting. If s/he is easily distracted by other kids’ food and won’t eat well, this may not be a good fit (or, on the flip side, maybe

Art, Dance,& Music For Preschoolers

rt, dance, and music have a variety of benefits for everyone, especially young toddlers and preschoolers. There are many simple, yet fun and engaging activities parents can implement at home. In addition, an art, dance and music class tailored for that specific age group may benefit your preschooler.

ART When your child grows into an older toddler/preschooler, their fine motor skills improve, along with their attention span and ability to focus on the project at hand. This year I learned my four-year-old son’s favorite type of art is sensory. Promoting sensory experiences with your toddler and preschooler could help them learn and retain information at the same time. Soapy Foam Play Put together a foamy sensory craft by creating a giant tub of suds. Fill a large plastic tub with water, food coloring and, dish soap, then mix it all with a hand mixer to create mountains of crazy foam. The result is a simple and fun activity to learn colors and experiment with mixing hues. Bubble Wrap Painting We did this recently at the Marina Library during a special art day, and it was a blast! Wrap your child’s feet in bubble wrap, sponge a few colors of tempera paint on to the bot10

toms of their feet and allow them to walk across sheets of craft paper to make a stomp painting. They can create unique dotted patterns with the bubble wrap and practice gross motor skills like balance. Helpful tip, do this outdoors! Spaghetti Painting Your child’s favorite meal just turned into a fun and exciting art activity. Fill large trays with cooked spaghetti and let your child paint and play with the pasta using brushes, sponges and different vibrant colors of washable tempera paint. You can allow the preschoolers to cut up, scoop and twirl the noodles before painting them. The kiddos will love to mix the colors and perhaps pretend they are head chefs in a new Italian restaurant. Fill in the blank with body parts: arm, foot, head, etc.

DANCE Another creative element to introduce to your toddler and preschooler is dance. Preschoolers benefit from age-appropriate instruction that enhances their physical, emotional, and social skills. Children as young as two years old can enjoy the benefits of a creative dance education. The Hokey Pokey “You put your _______ in; you put your _______out, you put your ______ in and, you shake it all about. You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around, that’s what it’s all about!”

Butterfly Flying You will need two scarves per child. Have your child hold a scarf in each hand and have them flap their wings like a butterfly, fly around the room, and make a cocoon on the floor by hiding their wings and forming into a ball. Play any song or “Fly Fly the Butterfly.” Freeze Dance Freeze Dance is a fun activity for children of all ages. Play music and have them move around the room however they wish. When the music stops, they freeze right where they finished. To mix it up have them move like different animals, different heights, etc.

MUSIC Music is our favorite daily activity! This early introduction to music does more than entertain. It can kick-start learning, serve as an important cue in a child’s routine, and offer lifelong benefits. Rhythm Jam Session Gather many types of rhythm instruments including tambourine, shakers, bells, cymbals, sticks, etc. Allow time to experiment with each instrument and then sing songs such as: Use Your Instrument Today (Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”) Let’s all play our bells today, To help you sing and dance this way. Jingle, jingle, ring, ring, ring, Keep the rhythm with a shake and ring. So, let’s all play our bells today, To help you sing and dance this way.

Sing-a-long in the car (or at home) If you are like me, you spend a lot of time driving. Many parents rely on technology to get their preschooler to sit quietly. We go a different route and make it loud! Put on your favorite child-friendly tunes and have a sing-a-long. Alternate kid favorites such as “Itsy Bitsy Spider and The Wheels on the Bus” with new hits such as “Happy” by Pharrell Williams and “How Far I’ll Go” by Alessia Cara.

8 Tips sleep tips for Toddlers & Preschoolers find it difficult to go through the day without rest. A nap-less child will often wake up cheerful and become progressively fussier or hyper-alert as the day goes on. If your child won’t nap stick to a routine “quiet time” every day for a break.

arents expect to be sleep deprived zombies while their babies are little, but what if the sleeping issues continue into the toddler years? I spoke to infant and toddler sleep expert Elizabeth Pantley, author of the best selling “No Cry Solution” series. Pantley offers valuable ideas for helping almost every toddler or preschooler get into a healthy sleep routine. These tips can bring improvement not only in your child’s sleep, but also in her daytime mood, growth health and outlook as well.

Maintain a consistent bedtime and awaking time. Your child’s biological clock has a strong influence on her wakefulness and sleepiness. When you establish a set time for bedtime and wake up time you “set” your child’s clock so that it functions smoothly. Aim for an early bedtime. Young children respond best with a bedtime between 6:30 and 7:30 P.M. Most children will sleep better and longer when they go to bed early.

Encourage regular daily naps. Daily naps are important. An energetic child can 16

Set your child’s biological clock. Take advantage of your child’s biology so that he’s actually tired when bedtime arrives. Darkness causes an increase in the release of the body’s sleep hormone–the biological “stop” button. You can align your child’s sleepiness with bedtime by dimming the lights during the hour before bedtime. Exposing your child to morning light is pushing the “go” button in her brain—one that says, “Time to wake up and be active.”

Develop a consistent bedtime routine. A consistent, peaceful bedtime routine allows your child to transition from the motion of the day to the tranquil state of sleep. An organized routine helps you coordinate the specifics: bath, pajamas, tooth-brushing. It helps you to function on auto-pilot at the time when you are most tired and least creative.

Create a cozy sleep environment. Where your child sleeps can be a key to quality sleep. Make certain the mattress is comfortable, the blankets are warm, the room temperature is right, pajamas are comfy, and the bedroom is welcoming.

Provide the right nutrition. Foods can affect energy level and sleepiness. Carbohydrates can have a calming effect on the body, while foods high

in protein or sugar generate alertness, particularly when eaten alone. A few ideas for pre-bed snacks are: whole wheat toast and cheese, bagel and peanut butter, oatmeal with bananas, or yogurt and low-sugar granola. Vitamin deficiencies due to unhealthy food choices can affect a child’s sleep. Provide your child with a daily assortment of healthy foods in three meals plus several snacks for health and good sleep.

Help your child to be healthy and fit. Too much TV watching and a lack of activity prevents good sleep. Children who get ample daily exercise fall asleep more quickly, sleep better, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling refreshed. Avoid activity in the hour before bedtime though, since exercise is stimulating – they’ll be jumping on the bed instead of sleeping in it!

Teach your child how to relax. It can help to follow a soothing pre-bed routine that creates sleepiness. A good pre-bed ritual is story time. A child who is listening to a parent read a book or tell a tale will tend to lie still and listen. This quiet stillness allows him to become sleepy. Lack of sleep isn’t healthy for anyone–big or small. Starting new routines is challenging when everyone is exhausted but if it can bring more sleep soon, it is well worth the initial discomfort. She’s also the mom of a child who suffers from insomnia and knows sleep deprivation well.

Problem solving skills and emotional development Kids can work through their emotions by simplifying situations through play. This helps them express their feelings and regain control. “Play supports emotional development by providing a way to express and cope with feelings.” (www.education.com) They may act out something that scared them, like a car accident they saw while driving past. They may also play out something they are not allowed to do and then work through the consequences through play. “Play can be safe outlet to work through situations that cause them anxiety, such as starting school or visiting the doctor. Letting the child take on the roll of the authority figure will help them process how events may unfold.” says Early Childhood Education Educator, Kara Thomas.

Development of imagination Play builds a child’s imagination. You can help your child with imaginative play by role playing with them. Call them on the pretend phone, ask them to cook you lunch in the play kitchen, or have them use the doctor kit to do a check up on you. Engage them in conversation while you act out these scenarios. Often, you will be surprised at their perceptions. By role playing, they learn to better understand their surroundings and build their imagination. Traditional play time allows kids to work through their emotions in a healthy way and develop important skills. It is vital to provide a child with adequate play time in their day, especially with all the distractions in today’s digital world. The best part is, the kids will be having so much fun, they won’t realize they are learning.
